So what were earlier Warhammer editions like, in terms of setting and lore? Like, what edition defined how most of the modern lore would be like? Was 1st ed WHFB as weird and tonally different in the same way Rogue Trader was for 40k? I hear stuff about how the Genevieve novels are like that.

1e literally had no lore. At all.

2e was generic fantasy, with tongue in cheek parody. A good example is the campaign Tragedy Of McDeath, a fantastic Shakespeare MacBeth campaign mocking British politics of the time, Scottish history, and the writer himself.

3e was the first Warhammer lore, and came out in the Rogue Trader era. Some factions like Chaos were mostly the same, some like Orcs was still just D&D generic. There was no limits on lore and the manuals encouraged you to use it as a collection of ideas for your community continuity to grow from rather than a setting for your OCs to live in.

4e added more factions and characters as well as novels. It was pretty high fantasy heroic mixed with mundane reality.

5e added the dark. General rule is if it existed in real life it was grimdark and fairly true to history, if it was fantastic it was amazing or comedic. There was wild expansion in every direction, fuck balance because this is a game to explore rather than compete.

6e is basically Warhammer finished. Everything was modern, and we were working towards international growth and campaigns. The problem is an explosion in 40k as well as GW realizing they had little taste for campaigns where players cause continuity coupled with FUCKINGKIRBY taking over leading GW to think of WFB as a junk property along with all the specialist games.

7e was a drastically scaled back and neutered version of 6e, designed for comp when ironically GW ended their own comp scene as well as all community outreach.

8e retconned the fuck out of the setting heavily to closer match 40k in theme and tone, before End Times made a mangled mess out of trying to turn a HUGE setting into one short story.

Then retarded capeshit Spelljammer AKA Age Of Sigmar.

First edition was very primitive. The Empire didn't even exist at this point, the 'Arabians' worshipped Allah straight up. It was pretty much a D&D wargame with bits looted from other settings GW made models for: Melniboneans, Runequest Broo and Lord of the Rings stuff.
Second edition was much the same but developed as it went on until WFRP first edition came out in 1986 and nailed down a lot of the stuff that's recognisably Warhammer, like the Empire, Skaven etc.
Third Edition came out in 1987 and included a lot of the material WFRP has created, making it pretty much the first serious edition of what we think of as Warhammer. The Realm of Chaos books were for third edition and detailed the Big Four.
Fourth and Fifth editions were mostly interchangeable and introduced retconned Bretonnia and Lizardmen and I suppose the rest is common knowledge.

Lots of proxies. Look at Reaper Miniatures for a closet look to game designs, GW doesn't fit Castlevania at all other than Ghouls for Fleamen.

You'll want Gargoyles as something resembling the Netflix demons and some good graveyard nasties.

A good mix of scenery. Pegasus Gothic, Reaper graveyard, Raging Heroes Cathedral for the main castle since it'll probably be cheapest to do a big topheavy thing.

For Legion, if you want to do it, roll greenstuff over a ball and press a layer of some Reaper nasties like pic related.
>>
>>54561391
Sadly the only store nearby is a GW so I can only use GW stuff.

Would it be possible to do some conversions or kit bashing to make it look similar to Castlevania?
>>

I am planning on buying most of my shit from ebay. Though thanks for the Legion idea.

I also got some molds from Hirst Arts so I might try drawing up a blue print for making gothic terrain, the only thing is to get more reference pictures.

Though I suppose I could just grab bits and shit from Reaper and other sites and slap them on my minis.

Those should still be usable in GW stores, right?

>>
>>54561705
IT depends 100% on the manager.

Those guys range from "Game on, brother" to the official position of "No more than 25% of any model or rider can be non-GW material" to horror stories of "I'll need to drill into the base to verify that it is not a recast".

Although you do have great power to complain and get them fired if you don't sperg out on camera. GW treats managers like Barnes & Noble treat staff. You just need to work the register and repeat memorized advice, not know shit.
>>
>>54561939

I like how the humor in the setting is something that can be taken seriously, until you think about it for just a second.

One of the battles between the Empire and Bretonnia was over an ugly woman getting insulted - and the man who did the insulting also had mad theories about fishmen and had his horse act as his advisor. The 'rich reward' for the Bretonnian peasant who invented the trebuchet is a single pig, and the copper coin peasant archers get is more than most see in a lifetime. Dwarves have grudes and take oaths over the pettiest of reasons. The greatest Goblin Boss to ever live was one that had gotten so fat he was considered bigger than most other greenskins.
>>
>>54561991
The 25% rule is also supposed to just be for tourneys, but some managers apply it to everything.

If the peasants lived entirely in a barter based economy, it's not impossible that they'd not use currency inside their own hamlets.

I'd argue that's an example of Blue-and-Orange Morality instead of a direct joke.

>>
>>54564718
Well all he seems to care about is industry. Evil industry, with the occasional blood sacrifice, but industry nonetheless. He doesn't really try to take his Chaos Dwarf servants down a dark path of damnation or anything.
>>
>>54564856
I could believe he was maybe a greater independent demon or something, with all his focus on sacrifices to boost his strength. But full blown god? Christ, he doesn't even have as many worshippers as fucking Ranald.
>>
>>54565082
To be fair, lots of really minor gods only have a few worshipers, and even a few major ones - how many people do you really think worship the Lady, since it's all focused in Bretonnia? Hashut probably benefits by being the only god the Chaos Dwarves worship, so even if there's only a small amount of them it's pretty focused, and very steady.

Of course, this could all easily be explained away if he was worshiped by other forces of Chaos as well, but of course that's not the case. Although I do remember someone pointing out a few threads back that Hashut's symbol was used by...Black Orcs, I think?

To be fair, that's when shit hits the fan with the Orcs, and the same could be said of every race that once it gets to the point where they go all out, they cease to have any lightheartedness to them. For the general part, Orcs are most definitely one of the goofiest races around.

>>
>>54568463
If this is the story I think it is, the part that makes it high comedy is they 'settled the grudge' about three generations later. Even the majority of the dwarfs weren't part of the original construction crew.
>>
>>54568487
Yes thank you for those details I missed. It has been a while since I read the story.
>>
>>54568463
The bird is a new add to that story. Originally it was a White Dwarf battle report, Emp. Vs. Dwarfs siege.

Every army has a few laughable tidbits, but dwarfs as a whole are pretty midtier. Orcs and Skaven are top tier. Dark Elfs and Tomb Kings are low tier.

Additionally, that shit ain't particularly funny. It's more a reflection of their blue/orange mindset. Wood Elves practicing Bran Wa Shin is funny. Rescuing dwarfs on Thorskinsons Isle is funny.

Hundreds dying over pride and principle...not so much.

That would be the same 100 years war that England managed to lose despite the French being comically stupid at times?
>>
>>54568739
They did pretty much what they wanted in France for over a century.
Sure, they got beaten by Jeanne d'Arc and basically that ended the war, but France was wrecked, and English lost nothing of their own, just packed up and left.

So I wouldn't say they lost the war. They just quit.

>Not butthurt at all, that's totaly what happened !
The Hundred years wars is one of the most complex conflict (and probably the most complex in Occident ) of the the medieval period. It's not even a continued conflict but several different conflict; with heavy military evolution, a lot of actor, and not just France and England and many political change.

The war ended with the creation of real nationalistic indentity among the two main actor, and despite what you seems to believe, and English defeat, they loosed their continental territory and their claim to the throne of France.

As in art design? Have to disagree famalam. WAR had a lot of talented people working on the art and models, including GW artists (Smith).

Mate, war ended in 1453, Jeanne died in 1431. And she was no true military leader, more than anything she was a symbol. Meh, I have unfinished concepts of Wood Elves vs Dwarfs and High Elves vs Lizordmen campaigns, but you say no HE or Dorfs, so whatever.

>Festival of Blood
>Dogs of War, Dark Elves

>Introduction.
>A mysterious employer hires an army of Dogs of War, renowned Old World mercenaries, to fight for him in a remote part of Border Princes, in fact on a territory of Badlands
>In truth, Dark Elves' Cult of Khaine has devised a cruel pastime - take toughest mercenaries of the Old World, toy with them like a cat with a mouse, and kill them for the glory of Khaine. But they might have big off more than they can chew, and Khaine's favour is fickle.
>Special rules: Dogs of War start with an army at least twice the size of a Dark Elves ones
>Unless noted otherwise, they can only use that army for the rest of the campaign. All the losses are carried over into next battle.
>Unless noted otherwise, Dark Elves can pick whatever army they want, but it must be at least two times smaller than Dogs of War one. The campaign is about objectives, not about tabling your opponent.

>Battle One
>Hard Welcome
>Battle Type - whatever you call it when an army has to make it to the other side of the battlefield while being attacked from both sides.
>Objectives - the Dogs of War must make way to the other side of the battlefield and slay a Sorceress trying to cause an landslide and cut them off the exit of the valley. The Sorceress stands in the back rank of a unit, which follows these limitations:
>1) must be Executioners, Dreadspears or Black Guard
>2) cannot exceed 20 models
>3) cannot include other characters
>4) is not allowed to move for any reason
>5) passes Panic tests automatically. Break tests cause damage as if the unit was Unstable.
>The sorceress cannot leave last rank of the unit, cannot fight unless directly attacked in melee, and cannot use any spells
>If the Sorceress is not kill by turn 6, the Dark Elves win.

to be cont.
>>
>>54569190
>If I was picking out of all factions it would be Ogre Kingdoms to get the boot, they've never felt right to me.

>>
>>54569300

>>
>>54569213
cont.

>Battle Two
>Dread Arena
>If Dogs of War won the previous battle, they make it out of the gorge and onto the coast. There they find their ships wrecked by magic storm, but survivors replenish the losses of any non-destroyed units. Battle is then fought on the beach.
>If the Dark Elves won, the battle is fought in the mountains.
>Battlefield must be rather small.
>Dark Elf army must include a Hydra or Kharibdiss. It gains 4 extra wounds, 1 extra attack, Unbreakable, and +1 AS.
>Dark Elves cannot have more than 2 units on the battlefield, excluding the required monster. The units can come as reinforcements from any direction, except for the sea-shore.
>Battle ends when the monster is slain.
>If it takes Dogs of War less than 4 turns to dispose of the monster, Khaine's laughter reverberates across the battlefield, and the monster is reanimated and joins the Dogs of War (using its normal statline and rules) for the rest of the scenario.

>Battle Three
>The Sacrifice
>With games finished, the Elves close in for a sacrificial kill.
>Pitched battle
>Every character killed and every unit wiped out grants the killing side a token of Khaine's Favour
>The battle lasts until there are at least 5 Khaine's Favour tokes in game

>Final Battle
>Coup de Grace / Now Its Personal
>Pitched Battle
>If Dark Elf army has more Khaine's Favour tokens, the Dark Elf army has half the DoW starting points or equal to the current DoW army costs, whichever is greater.
>If Dogs of War army has more Khaine's Favour tokens, the Dark Elf army has regular half the stating points size. All Dogs of War units gain Frenzy, Murderous Prowess and Devastating Charge rules. They can never lose their Frenzy.
>Battle lasts for 6 turns, at which point Khaine smites the losing side with blood-red swords falling from the skies.

The End.

He is god of luck alongside being patron of thieves.
So every time anybody feels that he needs luck he will pray to him for this luck.

In polytheistic pantheon you do not pray to one god. You worship them all and pray to one that can help you. Even when you are priest that dedicate his life to one of god, you still want to worship rest of pantheon.
For example before the battle you'd like to pray to both Sigmar and Ulric and Myrmydia as you can't have enough of divine protection.

On a mountain pass near karaz-a-karak, near the road, there is a boulder bearing the sign if a big hand, probably the one of a dwarf. A single ironbreaker guards the boulder day and night against vandals.
According to the legend, the ancestor god Grugni, while travelling through the mountains, leaned on this boulder to rest, leaving the mark of his hand etched in it. If you pray and touch the stone, Grugni will watch over you for the rest of the day. Humans wanting to touch the stone must pay 10 gold pieces. Elves are forbidden to touch the boulder

So, they're alright worshipping the *Grail* and its associates (knights, etc), just not the Lady herself?
>>
>>54572805
They do worship Lady but only forbidden to take part in same rituals with knights.
>>
>>54572805
They CAN worship the Lady, some lords just put a taxe on it. But many don't or simply don't apply this law (this is especially true under a Grail Knight).

Don't listen to Arch-tiers "Lore" videomaker mate.
>>
>>54572846
Also yes, basicly officialy they can't, and can't have shrine or anything, but they still recognize the Lady as a godess and venerate the grail knight. No one but asshole lords really give a fuck and care about punishing them for that anyway.

They are totally allowed to worship the Lady, there's no law against that. They just aren't allowed to pray before battle because peasants aren't considered chivalrous enough.

But the Lady is still the patron god of Bretonnia, and ignoring her entirely would be like ignoring Sigmar for Imperials. They still pray to her in times of trouble and shelter in her Grail Chapels when evil comes knocking, and they have holidays in her name (which are also the only guaranteed times they get a break from work), and most of the pilgrimages they take are to her sacred shrines. They just tend to focus on gods that have more of a role in their daily lives - Taal and Rhya have more of a role in farming and hunting, and Shallya helps them deal with the burdens of being dirt-poor hungry peasants. The higher ideals of chivalry are more focused on by nobles, and damsels (when not keeping to themselves) tend to interact with nobles more, so the only real sermonizing they get on Lady things are from Grail Pilgrims, who often mix Grail Knight stuff into that anyway.

I really don't know where people get the idea of peasants being barred from worshiping the Lady entirely from. It's a little stupid - why would you found a country and organize it on rules and concepts that are essentially passed down from the Lady herself, and tell the people that are the lowest of the low to follow to follow these divine instructions but not worship the goddess herself?
>>
>>54573440
Man how steamed would knights be when the local damsel decided she wants to fuck all their peasants, because all women of the grail are canon sloots?

They can't say a damn thing about it because its a Grail Damsel.

Are Grail Knights basically space marines?

Without going as far as actually including golden space marines in fantasy, and literally arming them with 'Bolt Pistols'?
>>
>>54574689
Well, they're not genetically engineered, and they aren't exactly wearing power armor. Their powers come from the blessing of the Lady and sometimes are more varied than what Space Marines get - they're surrounded by blinding light, they're anathema to the Undead, stuff like that.

But if you mean 'still human but superior to most humans,' sure. Though Chaos Warriors are a bit closer.
>>
>>54574746
Pretty sure your average Grail Knight is meant to be superior to normal Chaos Warriors, only the likes of Chaos Champions able to equal or exceed a Grail Knight (I gues in part because Grail Knights have passive holy powers like you mentioned which can make a Chaos Warrior start to cook just by being in the presence of one)

Norsca might provide a good excuse to shift things around, let Chaos share a few of the unique toys or whatever.

I haven't actually played as Chaos, so I don't know why they're considered worse than the Norscans now. All I know is that the Norscans are annoyingly tough because chariot spam that ties down your infantry mixed with missile cavalry that no one can catch up to so only archers can really have any effect, and Chaos Warriors are slightly less tough because they focus on footsloggers and knights that are easier to tie down, but also get giants and more Chaos Spawn and wizards and shit. Maybe I'm retarded, but both are tough in their own way - just one feels frustratingly so.

WoC campaigns suck becuase growth is slow, units are expensive, and everyone knows where your hordes are at all times and they'll take every opportunity to send their doomstacks across the map to snipe your weaker armies. The center of Shallyan worship is in Couronne - they actually like it that way, since they don't want political power anyway - and there's a pretty big temple to Manaan in Bordelaux.

Pretty sure there's one in L'Anguille too, but it's never mentioned as far as I know. And Morr and most of the other gods are brought up surprisingly rarely. Makes me wish that the Knights of the Grail was a bigger book, and the Bret fanboys got the same attention the Empire did on so many subjects.

RPG anon here.

I'm East Coast US. Weekends are obviously best, though not mandatory -- if weekdays, then evenings.

I've only ever used Roll20 for online RPGs. I don't have houserules for Warhammer. I ran the 2e rules out of the book -- and in the past adapted the legendary "Enemy Within" campaign from 1e to 2e rules.

One thing which I think would be nice to improve Warhammer is some way to divorce Skills from your Attributes. For example -- you can be an agile character who goes into a water-based career (like sailor, seaman, fisherman) from a terrestrial career. This allows you to pick up "Sail." Sail is based on your Agility. Suddenly, your character who has never sailed before... is an expert sailor because he already had a high agility. Maybe just a modifier like -10% or -15% to represent the amateur nature.
>>
>>54577389
There are a few reasons:
>Firstly, there are a lot of basic templates for a variety of different race for characters and it's easy enough to work out a template for use, either as a nerfed version (Beastmen characters that are generated are far stronger than they should be), or generating a new one (such as for orc, goblin or zombie characters). It also means that characters that have their race changed during the campaign can easily have their characteristics modified with a minimum of fuss.
>Second, corruption and mind-break mechanics are already present. Tome of corruption presents how to use corruption values of an area in a campaign and the rulebook itself has the insanity system to represent being taken by a monster.
>Third, since human-aligned humans have godly empowerment, that can also be done simply by re-skinning chaos warriors. Though in my case, rather than the chaos of mutations and rewards, I'm thinking that earning such bonuses will instead grant some free but fixed statline advances which I'm basing around the differences between chaos careers and regular ones.
>>
>>54577286
Because I'm curious in a sick way - the one time that people I knew tried to do anything like that, we made a game of not being seduced by the monsters, which was as awkward as it sounds. Is this an ERP game? This seems like a lot of work for one.

Fuck, another tally on the list of "reasons why I don't want to go on holiday the day after tomorrow".

I really wanna give WFRP a go now, since I read a bit of Knights of the Grail.
>>
>>54578865
I'm pretty sure Grail Knight is the most powerful class in the game. In WFRP, you start out as a lowly servant or country bumpkin and it's mostly mistake or extreme caution that sees you survive to the point of Grail Knight.

I always felt like GMs should hold back EXP from players who are too cautious or whose characters run away from danger. After all, they're not getting the experience of survivng all of the odds! I never implemented it in the games I ran for fear of player revolt.
>>
>>54578942
You shouldn't. Don't punish players for being smart. Instead, give bonus objectives that involve going into danger.
>>
>>54578942

WFRP is pretty deadly -- therein lies the fun.

As for how you go from peasant to Grail Knight -- unlikely, of course. But anyone getting to Grail Knight is unlikely. You can start as a Squire, however. Another path is receiving a knighthood from a high lord. The Enemy Within campaign has the possibility of the players being made Knights Panther by the Elector-Count of Middenheim as reward for services rendered (and then promptly shipped off to Kislev to avoid the embarrassment).

Agreed, I just wanna point out the blind spot of the career line that many would-be power gamers miss.

A coward, liar, double-dealer will NEVER get offered a sippy from the Grail.
>>
>>54579462
I don't know about that, the Fey Enchantress crowned a vampire king of Bretonnia after he'd killed the last king in front of all his nobles by drinking the man's blood after a lengthy fight.
>>
>>54579503
He was never given the Grail tough, that's why most people don't recognize his "Corronement" as legal anyway. The Roy of Betronnia must alway be a Grail Knight, that's the rule.

This is also kinda true for the character themselve, if a character act like a total murderhobo and a ass, he could find the karma to be a bitch to him when he need it. And well, I'm greatly attach to roleplaying. We are playing at a ROLEPLAYING game after all.

>>
>>54579655
I don't think so - but in the 6th ed army book, it says that the Fay Enchantress and 'the newly crowned king' denounced Merovech. The Knights of the Grail book is the place that says that he was a vampire, and in the original story, as far as I can tell, it's not clear if he was a vampire or just a madman. I tend to ignore Knights of the Grail when it comes to canon myself, though maybe that's unfair to it.

Quite frankly it's all a confusing mess in some sense - I've never actually seen it writ that the king has to be a Grail Knight, and we aren't sure why the Fay Enchantress crowns some bad dudes king and banishes others who by their titles seem to have been good. If they were a Grail Knight, why would they need to have been deposed? If the entire system relies on the idea that the earthy representative of the Lady chooses the best dude for the job, why is it clear that sometimes they fuck it up? Why did the End Times declare the title of king in Bretonnia to be Royarch, and decide that the King was either a successor of Giles or was chosen by one of the twelve Dukes, adding an element of democracy into the mix? I don't fucking know, and it always hurts my head to think about it.
>>

I have no idea what this is or where it's from, but I'm pretty certain it's relevant to what you're saying.

Either way, it was bad to have it outright revealed, especially when one could have believed that the Lady had become a deity just because of the belief of her people. And it had always been a little twisty before - I think she appeared at one point in the Genevieve series, and there was nothing like 'I'm an elf lol.'

I think at this point there was no good way to explain it, even if GW had actually tried for one - even explaining how somehow the High Elves and the Wood Elves didn't realize what the Lady was about seemed half-assed.
>>
>>54579831
The thing is that this was a theory before End times and people only hate it now that it's part of End Times.

>I have no idea what this is or where it's from, but I'm pretty certain it's relevant to what you're saying.

Its a pic of the studio Brettonian style-guide from an old convention.

''think she appeared at one point in the Genevieve series, and there was nothing like 'I'm an elf lol.'''

She didnt and why would she admit to that?

I think the high/wood elves one could easily be explained by - just dont care enough to investigate.
>>
>>54580002
I liked the idea that while the Lady was originally a wood elf plot, belief created a separate entity independent of that plot.

Honestly something among the line of this could have been cool:
>Minor Godess/Half-Godess from the elves live in Athel Loren but don't like hiding in the forest and grow bored and angry about it
>She think her people have grown cold and too distant of what they where and she don't understand Ariel anymore (probably the period where she got nuts)
>Instead she pass the time by watching the mortal human in the plains she on day fooled, battling for survival
>They are under constant treath by Orcs, beastman and skaven, yet they survive, and her people don't do anything like they would have when they where still the Azur. Worse they a butchering everyone in their path during the Wild Hunt.
>She like the knight roaming the land, they kinda remind her of the Azur, even if of course they less noble. They have potential tough.
>She notice a particulary fierce and noble knight, who seems to be as noble as Prince of Ulthuan in heart, a fearless
>She watch him for a while and see him charge and slay a dragon attacking one of his village despite the danger
>He begin to fight off the danger in the region with some buddy and she grow admirative of him, and decide to help them
>She appear to human and his companions and bless them, while encouraging them to be chivalrous and noble, to exploit their potential
>As he fight for his people she grow incrasingly found of Gilles, and she is horrified to see him fall, she order a Asrai to bring a message to the human, to bring Gilles to a lake, where she can collect him and bring him in her realm, to be her champion and compagnion.
>She realise that the bretonian people and Gilles compagnion have begin to see her as a ideal of chivalry and worship her.
>She realise that their faith made her more powerfull, and with times she grow more and more found of this people, and slowly accept to be what they think she is(probably helped by the effect worship have on gods in warhammer)

>Still being a elf, she try to create link betwen her people and the Bretonnian.
>Ariel and Orion accept, but they merely see them as meatshield
>She is not happy about Orion being a huge dick with his Wild hunt but can't do much about it

Or something like this; would have respect the link with the Asrai, and made it less "PRO ELVES BECAUSE ELVES ARE BEST".
Add a bit of mystery in it, hide and suggest the truth, Et VoilĂ  !
