What are army painter paints like?
>>
>>54539342
Personally, I'm a big fan. People that complain that they are watery, but those people clearly haven't shaken the bottle properly. I'm not a great painter, but I definitely like the paint more than Citadels, but Citadel have all of those lovely technical, tint and effect paints.
>>
>>54539404

Only some of my colors are watery, like the black, and the wateriness doesn't affect their coverage. I WANT them to be watery.

For some reason most of my Army Painter paints are extremely thick, like the company just squirted as much paint as they could cram into the bottle. I'd prefer the paints to be thinner.
>>
>>54539494
I'm not excellent at thinning paint, I get it right sometimes, but not always. I think the paint being thick is a good thing though, because when I do get it right, it goes a very long way. I've been using the same bottles for nearly a year.
>>
>>54539273

im kinda confused about how to follow up the squads, im eager to paint the shoulders black for ravenguard or carcharodon, but blue pauldrons are giving me some time to think about changing the colour scheme, letting the grey base as it is. No idea how to proceed or what colours to use

I split squads A and squads B into different groups to make it easier to knock them out a bit quicker, they're all from Know no Fear and Dark Imperium, the Sergeants are kitbashed from Lieutenants. The look like this when mixed with differently posed models, I just haven't got another picture to show it right now.

In these videos, when Duncan applies the wash. Does he just wash the entire crest on the chest or does he selective wash each recess on it?

>>
>>54539967
yeah, my first point were the sharks, but im kinda down on the black and grey colour, if i put some blue pauldrons and knee plates would make em a different chapter, but im still confused and i dont want to experiment more for now, between using calgar blue or macrage blue, or just paint em black and be edgy

This was actually my first time painting facial hair, this is what I did.

1. paint his face normally
2. take some grey and black paint, water it down (A LOT) and start applying lighlty, use lighter grey first on the raised areas, and then use darker grey/black for the recesses
3. wash his beard/stubble with a bit of seraphin sepia, to make it look more brownish/transparent

>mfw I'm planning on painting at least 15 of them
>and then an entire IG army

well, see you all again in 20 years I guess
>>
>>54539926
depends,

if it has enough texture you can wash the entire thing, but a wash on a flat surface can cause stains and pooling or tint the surface colour. so you can selectively paint each recess.

or you can just do a wash over the entire surface and then go over the flat areas with the base colour to pop it out.

its situational based on colour, effect and model.
>>

Nice! The models are really fun. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have so far.
A word of warning, the plastic is really hard, so chopping apart things for conversions requires a saw or strong clippers. And I think the hard plastic also means polystyrene cement glue doesn't work well. I use super glue to put the models together, with lots of pinning for conversions when I'm swapping around arms.

So, Redemptor. Solid kit all around, I'd say, but it's not without issues.

- Main gun and secondary gun can be magnetized no problem, there are no shared parts between them. Stormbolters/frag launchers should be doable, but more fiddly. I only did the main gun, because I am lazy.
- The front armor and the beer gut could be left off. In fact, the upper armor is only clipped into place to begin with. Leaving off the beer gut would leave you with two awkward knobs that need shaving off though.
- Legs are fiddlly to pose because they are only slid into place, with no pegs to hold them. I had to pin them with brass rods for working out a semi-decent pose.
- All the armor can be slotted into place for fitting purposes and holds sorta well. In the pic all the armor save some hip guards are held in place that way, allowing for easy removal for basecoating.
- The mini-turrets for the stormbolters tend to rattle a lot and should probably be glued into place.
- One foot has flexible toes, the other is fixed, which is kinda shitty.
- Both arms feel like they have one joint too little. Something like a turning bit above the ellbow would have been nice.

The contemptor is probably still better for conversions.

Here's my hobby space.

If you want to become a better painter, the first thing you want to do is kill shadow shadow. The circular lamp I have is fucking amazing for this. It's a slightly warmer colour than I wanted, but the white lights elsewhere in my room almost completely mitigate this.

When you see Duncan paint, his shit is always well-lit.
>>
>>54541485
You're over thinning your paints in the first place, if you want to actually thicken your paints then you'll need some "medium", essentially it's just pigmentless acrylic carrier. The name changes up but I use Vallejo "Matte Medium"

Clearly a vile heathen Etherial, whose species-machinations are not predicated on trust, as is the Imperial Way, but on subjugation. Ne'er shall the Etherial believe in her underkin as she believes in her own rightenousness. Her peoples are but tools, held in surreptitious thrall, to be used until blunt and broken, then discarded just as the next comes fresh off the production line. That they believe they are working of a volition that is their own, I should pity them as is my nature as a human being. Alas I do not pity the xenos, for I do not suffer them. But they shall suffer me.

I'm new to painting miniatures and am having a he'll of a time getting the right consistency when thinning my paints. Does anyone have any tips? I usually way overdo it and need like 40 coats or don't water it down nearly enough. Is there an easy way to tell how much is enough?
>>
>>54544140
depends. what paints are you using?

for example, if you're using citadel layer then you only need about a 0.25/0.5:1 water/paint ratio. if you're using citadel base then a 1:1 mix is about right.
>>
>>54544140
if you're the measuring type then thin a new pot of Citadel down by 60% of its volume with water (so 12ml of paint with 7.2ml of water) . I do this with all my new paints and I very rarely have to do any extra thinning down (unless I want it really watery)
>>

They are pretty thicc but honestly i am pretty meh as a painter so it aint worth the extra work

thanks, i blatantly stole the pattern from Canadian forces Griffon helicopters since i'd see them flying around, and i always attributed them a role similar to a devlifish. I'm working on highlighting to make the pattern pop a bit more.

the tiger stripe pattern is repeated on crisis suits (to mixed results due to poor edge highlighting), and the infantry just have the solid olive drab armor with khaki or bluish grey fatigues depending on role.

So while i'm on the fence on the suits, i do like the look on the vehicles, which you can tell i like a lot so it works out, the picture above being a 1500pt army.

How many of you anons honestly paint on the sprue and how effective is it?
>>
>>54545847
I pretty much do so wherever I can and it's effective as fuck at getting the based details down and getting the highlights and shades on the actual piece. The trick is to then assemble the model before the final highlight. This way you can tie in the separate parts together to get a unified mini.

Only drawback is whenever you cut it off the sprue then need to sand or file an area down and you have to redo that section, but it's better than pissing about trying to get a fully assembled mini in various angles to get to details.
>>
>>54545847
I know a few do

I personally won't because I prefer to assemble them and use lamps to determine lighting effects

But I've seen spur painting work pretty well for most u just have to clean it up a bit once you are done

>>
>>54545982
Well desu some paints are already a little thinner than others so it's kinda up to the person, I usually look at the top of whatever you are working with brush wise and if it's sorta globbed on then u need to thin it if it becomes a wash the second you put it on something then it's too thin

So it's something u gotta figure out for yourself

Patience is key. You're not gonna become a great painter overnight or even within a year. More than that, especially when you're new, making a good miniature will take time, be it layering on multiple coats or freehanding or highlighting. Just set small goals for yourself with each miniature, or each squad.

That said, it's also about knowing how and where to take shortcuts. Duncan's painting videos are good for a lot of these, since they seem more aimed at getting a tabletop force ready quickly.

Stickier brand of blu tac (I use actual Blu Tac from Bostik which is stickier than the generic white tack I used from 3M), a round toothpick (not those shitty flat ones), a good solid connection with the tack (cover entire arm joint, etc), and delicate touch to not push the part off the tack.

It is fiddly, but it's easier to do this than glue or drill every piece.

Fluff is pretty simple, Gulliman told Cawl not to use any Traitor Primarch geneseeds but it's implied he might have because the AdMech don't answer to Papa Smurf.
Not only that but we've got shit like the Red Scorpions which are implied to be created from Fulgrim's geneseed.

As far as modelling try to find some Night Lord-y iconography as well as colour schemes but just slightly changed up.
>>
>>54547143

With Guilliman introducing the Reivers, he's admitting terror tactics are effective.

Could be a reason for Cawl to raise a chapter of Not Lords behind Guilliman'a back. Then when girlyman finds out he can't be fucked purging them.

How much primer is too much primer?
>>
>>54548934

That's too much in some spots. You can keep going and paint over it, but it is thick.
>>
>>54548934
Better question; Why aren't you painting it less assembled? It alleviates alot of worries from the priming process. Get an oven mitt, hold a straightened paper clip while you heat up an end and carefully press it into the bit of the mini in unseen places as a way to hold them while priming and painting. If the model is resin do it where it's well ventilated or with a mask. Metal you'll need a pin vise. When you're done using them you clip them off flush and assemble normally.

Update on my WiP tac marine sarge from the first unit I've painted. He's got some arms since I last posted. Wanted to go for lightning covered power sword, but had no idea what I was doing, welp. Feedback and tips?
>>

Don't quote me with Cooper you pleb
What are you even doing running that icon with a plain loyalist marine model
You were too excited to convert and post this shit that you couldn't clean it up first?
>>
>>54549077
It's part of a unit of nurgle terminators, hence the icon

Homebrew. Main colour is grey, trim is company dependent (1st is white, 2nd is gold, 3rd is red, etc.), lenses, scopes, plasma, power sword, etc. are green.
Fluffed as inspired by Arthurian knights.
>>
>>54545921
The weapon reminds me of soulcalibur. I love it.

Damn, i dont usually like homebrew chapter color schemes but yours looks really nice

You're trying
Now just prime the helmets white, stop making such dirty washing and do your armor's line work in black paint instead of just wash. Use the wash still but just water it down and get to a base color that's a GW range, not the grey of the primer. Then your highlights wont look like shit.
>>
Who's the best youtube airbrush-guide-guy? Mine should be in next week and I'm excited to finally be able to prime in something less than 90% humidity.
I've been watching the Nextlevel painting guy but I get triggered because he is like a carbon copy of me (vapes, obnoxious, has a poster of sonic displayed prominently in room ironically). I like his work and tips seem decent but I have difficulty deciphering if I should thin my paints to "gangster" levels or if they're still in the range of "OG" thickness

Shit bro, I'm not in a position to be reking anyone, I'm a noob still working on my first unit. Your red scorpions look dope, and I'm enjoying the brotherhood of the brush cleaner. Grey with an accent is a pretty neat scheme I think.
>>
I hope we get primaris size chainswords soon.
>>
>>54549313
Ironically, I'm basing the scheme off of my childhood /myguys/ from when I was a young 40Kid with no idea that the red scorpions existed (if they did exist 15 odd years ago). Thanks though man, appreciated. I'm curious to see if my 3rd company squad (red trim) comes out well. We will see, they're up next after I finish up these tacs.

Not fan of base, would much prefer a proper scenic one. Distracts from model too much , unless you got some artsy vision going on.
Love what you did to the scythe handle!
>>
>>54549544
Cheers man I'll keep you posted. I love the codex compliant trims, it justifies a nice bit of colour variety in your army.

Although with the Arthurian theme, I'm thinking of making an additional, non codex-compliant company of "questing knights" who are deployed independently, and can be attached to any given force, or completely solo. Basically an excuse to make a lot of conversions and character models, with lots of cloaks, personal heraldry all over their armour, and a melee and shield focus. I'd use them as any kind of officer/captain/company champion if I used them in game, just with bonus fluff.
>>
>>54549537

Apparently those chests are modified Mk IV, but the groin flaps and studs make them look entirely like Mk III. The only way they could possibly be Mk IV is because the chestplate is blank, just like the assault Mk IV armor is on Destroyers.
>>
>>54549279
Right there with you brother. They call me mean now because I'd rather show them then have them give me money to do it.

Came to the conclusion that I have to stop that because then I never have time to do my own stuff, and it irritates the hell out of me to play with stuff not done.

"But you're so good at it, why not just do your stuff too?"
Dumbass, that's not how the flow of time works.

I've even got one guy that, no joke, after they got back from an event he showed me an unassembled model and asked if I wanted to put it together for him.

To be fair, I jab at him because he can't figure out how the fuck glue works for some reason, but there's limits.

A man after my own heart.
>>
>>54549855
Tacticals and Primaris are both 28mm. Primaris just have unfucked proportions.
>>
Does anybody else hate painting bases?

I've got 5 wolf scouts, a primaris captain and an Iron priest all finished APART from the bases. I really need to get my shit together.
>>
>>54549500
Looks cool. Post more pics of your works.
>>
>>54549947
You can make great bases with minimal efforts. The trench bases I make for my IW is a thick coat of Devlan Mud, Nuln Oil, bit of Nurgle's rot in some recesses to look like gaz puddles, and some ardcoat.

Do it when you're waiting for some washes to dry, and do a chain, it'll go faster.
>>
>>54549855
>>54549884
To clarify, at some point marines were switched to larger bases. Some older marine figs still come with the smaller bases. Primaris all come with the larger bases, primaris HQ come with even larger bases.

sorry mate, I'm just confused

so it's just the size of the bases that have changed?
>>
>>54550069
Just the bases, nothing else
>>
>>54550092
Yep. The size of base has changed. Additionally there are a new type of elite marine called Primaris marines. These are larger, but they are a separate unit type. Normal marines are the same size, but with larger bases.
>>
>>54550092
For normal marines, yes. Non Terminators went from 25mm bases to 32mm. Then, GW started a new line of Marines, the Primaris, that are all bigger and better proportionned and have big ass bases as well.
>>
>>54550092
They're squatting the old marines but apart for that nothing has changed
>>
>>54549778
Go for it man, just use your characters as count-as squad leaders and HQ choices. It's a fun and fluffy way to give yourself flexible wargear options while sticking to WYSIWYG. You want to run your Captain with a thunder hammer and storm shield, but you've modelled him with a power axe and a grav pistol? Luckily for you, Sir Hammershield of the Yourguys Questing Knights company is leading the battle that day instead.

>>
>>54552537
>resin
If finecast, you do not. Just cry.

If not, then methylated spirits seems to work, so says google.
>>
I have a dumb painting question

I'm painting orange over a black primer, I know that black is going to show through with the first coat but how many is normal before I get complete coverage? I'm concerned I'm thinning to much but also really afraid to mess with it cus I don't want thick paint.

Right now I'll do 2 coats of a darker orange, two coats of the brighter orange and then an edge color and on some of my models you still see just barely black under it.
>>
>>54552837
You're thinning your paints too much. You should thin your paints just enough that there's no resistance to the brush, but not enough to dilute the pigment. You should be doing 2 to 3 thin coats to get enough coverage to have no black showing through.

About to start painting my new army. Just getting back into 40k, haven't painted anything in a decade.

Is it possible to use a ceramic plate as a palette, without ruining the plate ?
>>
>>54552864
Just use a wet palette like the one in the OP.
>>
>>54540729
Chimeras are fine. Vets are stronger than they were before since they can take a Heavy Flamer in addition to a Heavy weapon and 3 Specials. Not only that, but all their weapons got cheaper. 3 Plasma Guns are 21 points instead of 45, which more than makes up for the cost of the Chimera being about 91 point. Plasma Pistol Sergeants are also worth taking because it's 5 points instead of 15. Meltas got more expensive sure, but they are also strong this edition. Plus now a Commander can ride with them in the Chimera to give them orders, and you can put in a Psyker for some Smite and denying powers. PLUS 4 Bullgryn in a Chimera wreck shit now.

So this whole oh woe is me, we aren't as good as before. Fuck that, Mech Guard is even stronger than last edition. Conscript spam is a meme. Artillery, Tank Commanders, Vets in Taurox/Chimeras, Bullgryn in Chimeras are all very strong.
>>
>>54552864

I may just be a retard but assembling stuff like Necron Warriors where the left arm has to line up to fit the right arm correctly frustrates me to no end. The glue dries too fast for me to manipulate it so I end up trying to hold all 3 pieces together to fit it.

I've been using super glue since time immemorial but I've been told that using plastic glue would solve this problem? That the plastic adheres damn nearly instantly (I know how plastic glue works, melting the plastic and all) but it takes time to cure, so you can manipulate the pieces for like 30-45 seconds.
