Last time on Song of Swords:
Zells have big titties

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. The Kickstarter was nearly 300% funded, and we're on the fast track to kicking ass baby.

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.3. The next update will probably be called v1.4.

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:
http://tattered-realms.wikia.com/wiki/Tattered_Realms_Wiki

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread.

We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room, but now we have a much better way to play Audatia: Tabletop Simulator! The (official!) mod for Audatia is now up and running!

Has anyone run a game of Ballad with lots of on-ship combat? How did it turn out when bullets were flying everywhere? Can't certain guns with certain bullets just destroy an entire ship? Why not use those from outside the other vessel?

Myrmidons are currently beyond the scope of this work.

How would you guys rank the stats in order of importance and practicality for fighting? Strength is probably king, but what comes after it?
>>
>>54518935
agi, then wit, then end then hlt
>>
>>54517564
I doubt the problem is actually destroying the ship, but causing breaches which would let Dust in.

ADR is God.
>>
>>54520131
No point in it if you don't have enough STR to do damage.
>>
>>54518935
ADR, and by association AGI and WIT are the most important stats. AGI is better than WIT due to being relevant for stability rolls. Then comes STR.

After that no stat is really important, though there's some benefit to WIP, PER, HLT and END.

>>54520524
You will eventually do damage if you keep hitting long enough. ADR keeps you alive as well.
>>
>>54520524
Since ADR also equals successes, it does damage too.

>>
>>54527333
Absolutely he would. Both the squire and knight would have riding horses, possibly several each to switch between, and several other horses would serve as pack animals for armor and supplies. Then a warhorse, to ride in battle.

>>
>>54531310
2.0

In the context of chargen:
AGI and ADR > WIT. WIT isn't used for combat except for ADR, but AGI is used frequently. It is better to have 7 AGI and 1 WIT than 6 AGI and 2 WIT.
INT is useless in combat; its only indirect uses are buying more ranks in Riding or Intimidate. It will matter bigly after combat for Surgery rolls to stay alive though.

You can't have just STR or just ADR. Two points gives you +1 SDB or +1 ADR. Now +1 ADR is +1 CP, which is usually only a 40% to become more damage, whereas +1 SDB is 100% to become more damage. But you need to be able to hit at all, so you need CP too. You want both to be as high as possible.

END and HLT are worth very much less now since they no longer contribute to TOU. Carry is meaningless, it's really easy to be Unencumbered even in loads of metal armor. Getting END would only be worth it if you have 1 point left, or you hit the cap for STR, since otherwise it'd be better to buy STR. END and HLT matter for bleeding but the bleeding rate was cut by 1/2 to 1/3, so it's not a big problem. If you're an Ohanedin then your uses for Rules of Nature are HLT-1, so HLT matters more there than for humans.
>>
>>54531310
>>
>>54532583
High Willpower is still more inportant for an O-din though, to actually get that extra damage.
>>
>>54526035
>>54526035
Chain has an advantage that the friction between the rings will naturally fight rust build up. Keep it oiled and roll it in a barrel full of sand every once in a while and it will keep basically forever.
>>
>>54534566
Repair is also pretty easy once you are back in civilization. You can get it very easily patched with new rings to repair areas damaged by combat.
>>
Could a Profession test be used to do things like looking for firewood-worthy trees and chopping them?
>>
>>54537729
I only skimmed through the rules:
You could do a PER check for finding the wood and a STR check for chopping it. You could also do a skill check instead (if it makes sense and everyone at the table agrees that it does). For example PER + Hunting/Profession(Woodfinder) for finding and STR + Crafting(Wood)/Profession(Farmer) for chopping the wood.
>>
>>54538047
Makes sense, I was gonna go for a two-part business like that, and I like the design you came up with
>>
>>54532913
That's correct, but even 4 WIP is a massive bonus.
>>
>>54537729
Yes, if it's related to your profession. Definitely.
>>
>>54497529
What is a Zell? Like the Clan roe from battletech?
>>
>>54543974
Psychic boat elves on living ships who love circles and bork.
>>
>>54543974
They're basically elves with a hivemind who live on sentient boats. Because the ship shares in their consciousness and wants there to be more Zells, it pushes them to be turbosluts. This is also the reason why they can't catch the Gay, because that would get in the way of cranking out millions of boat-elves to further infest the world.
>>
>>54544535
>turbosluts
With the caveat that its really weird for them to fuck their fellow hiveminders so when they run across other ships or hit a port they go buckwild.
>>
And if a human mate with a Zell, the child is not a half-Zell, but a Zell.
>>
>>54544795
Gotta avoid that inbreeding somehow.

>>54545408
There are Half-Zells in Ballad. I think the implication is that at this point all humans in TR are already Zell/Human Hybrids because they've been hanging around each other for a million years, so instead of producing a chimera they just default back to boat elf because those traits are dominant.

WEIRD WISDOM WEDNESDAY

In ancient times past, the Helian Empire spanned over the entire Shattered Sea. The Helian Elves' every needs were serviced by sorcerous automatons, designed for specific functions.

It should come as no surprise to any familiar with Elvish craftsmanship that many of these have survived the collapse of Helion, and after centuries attempting to dig their way free of the rubble, some have finally managed to escape their watery tombs to return to the surface world.

One such incident occurred less than 50 years ago in Illegon. What is now believed to be a street-cleaning automaton emerged near the city of Vinici during the 7th Illegosi-Kamen War. The machine besieged the city for nearly six months, attempting to gain access to "clean" it, and shredding to pieces pike formations, cavalry, and all manner of halberdiers before finally a cannon was commissioned large enough to destroy it.

The Helian Empire denied all involvement with the design of the machine, despite its repeated self-identification as the "Oiketes M" until a legal suit was brought against them two years ago by Empress Lea. A settlement of 14,000 Solars was paid to the people of Vinici.

As a beginner GM with beginning players:
I want to drop some of the more advanced combat maneuvers to ease the players and myself into the system.
The core maneuvers (as stated in the beta rules) are Swing, Thrust, Block, Parry, Void, Steal Initiative.
What other maneuvers could I add to that list to spice things up? I want to keep it fun and manageable.

Defensive: Riposte, Ally Defense
Movement: Thread The Needle, Rapid Rise, Flee

The first update to Sword & Scoundrel has released.
>Minor update this week. The July 13th release contained the basic rules and character creation materials, and we've had a blast seeing what you guys have come up with. This week's update is a direct response to your feedback. It contains a number of error corrections and rules clarifications as well as some minor buffs to the characters themselves, with attributes, skills, and proficiencies all getting a little more love on the priority table.
>Keep your eyes peeled, the next release is a big one.
It's still only character creation. Hopefully the next release will occur next Thursday, and hopefully this release will include combat to put the rest of character creation into context.

Download it from their site so they have some clue of how many people are interested in it.

Question:
A spearman (very long) blocks the attack of an axewielder (short). In the following round, is the axewielder "snapped back" to the spear's max reach? Where does he go?
>>
>>54573395
No. Range is changed on a successful attack, not a successful defense, even if you pay range costs to parry. The fight remains at whatever reach it was.
>>
>>54573395
What this guy said >>54573506
Range doesn't change on succesful defense.
>>
>>54573773
>>54573506
Is stepping parry not a thing anymore?
>>
>>54573506
>>54573773
To clarify:

Suppose it's the first round of the melee bout.
The axeman has initiative and attacks. The spearman is defending. The spear is Extremely Long; the axe is Short.
"The basic distance between any two characters is the Reach of the longer weapon between the two".
The current range between the combatants is therefore Extremely Long.
"When declaring an Attack Maneuver against a Target at a different Reach than the character’s own, an Activation Cost must be paid in addition to any others equal to the difference between the Reach of the Attack Maneuver and the defender with longer Reach".
The attacking axeman must close this gap by paying 4 CP, since the gap between Short and Extremely Long is 4 steps.
"If a character successfully hits their Target with an attack that has a Reach value, the combat moves to the Reach of the attack".
If the defending spearman successfully blocks the attack of the axeman, the range does not change to Short, but stays at Extremely Long.
The following counter attack of the spearman against the axeman is therefore perfectly spaced at Extremely Long.

Now, in my mind, it seems weird that the attacking axeman, who managed to take a swing at the shield of the spearman at short range, gets send the entire way back to Extremely Long reach. Imagine a ridiculously long spear (a 20 feet long toothpick) and a guy with an axe running all the way to the spearholder, giving him a whack on the shield, and running all the way back to the end of the spear to receive a groinpoke.

Am I missing something?

>20 feet long
Jesus guy, that's longer than most pikes. An EL reach spear is probably closer to 12 feet.
Remember that movement is inherent in fighting, and all Maneuvers are abstractions which include that movement. A failed attack might mean you actually deflected his attack with the shield, or it might mean he never got into a position to swing his arm at you at all. The reach penalty is not just the other guy having to move closer, but having to move forward safely while you also move back and around.

>>54574270
It was a Journeyman talent, so you typically needed a school level of 6 or more before you could buy it.

Why should I use Song of Swords instead of Mythras?
>>
>>54574673
What the hell is Mythras?
>>
>>54574729
Based on RuneQuest in some manner afaik
Or rebranded RQ. Something along those lines.
>>
>>54574673
Song of Swords takes all of the interesting mechanical options of Mythras combat and dials them up. I actually tried to run a Mythras game on the tails of an SoS game, and my players complained that they found the combat less interesting in comparison. Considering that Mythras has one of the best combat systems in the industry and is one of my favorite games, I think that's pretty good praise.

On the other hand, if you want to have magic I suggest sticking with Mythras, since it's tailor made for that kind of game and SoS is lacking in magic systems. You can't go wrong with either one, though.
>>
>>54574822
It's Runequest 6. However, the original company, Chaosium, got the Runequest rights back and has essentially pretended that no improvements or changes to the system have occurred in the last 15 years and so Runequest 6 had to be rebranded as Mythras.
>>
>>54574729
Something I really want to see in SoS is the basic, folk magic of Runequest. It would be a great addition to regular melee fighting.
>>
>>54577266
Too bad, you're getting Dark Souls pyromancy and Shaman King instead
>>
>>54577266
doesn't runequest magic get into Exalted levels of wire-fu at some point?

>>54578210
Only at the absolute highest level. Getting to that point is essentially the end goal of an entire campaign of Runequest. Most people are restricted to making a blade slightly sharper or not getting wet in the rain.

Depending on size and how high you're holding the shield, it's gonna be protecting those zones at all times, adding its AV against any attacks. At the beginning of an action you can move it up or down.

You can make Block maneuvers to completely cancel out an attack so you can protect areas your shield may not be currently covering, but if that fails, and the hit location happens to be protected by your shield, the attack will have to go through the shield's AV before touching you

what's this stuff about Missile Defense RS in the burd section? I can't find anything about that (or much about how you defend against ranged attacks at all) in the combat section.
>>
>>54601162
This? It's at the beginning of the combat chapter.

Missile Defense
A character’s Missile Defense is the RS which must be overcome in order for a character to hit them with a missile attack. This RS is 4 by default, but can be altered by other factors as detailed below.

Factor : Missile Defense Change
Moved this Phase : +1
Sprinted or Charged this Phase : +2*
Currently involved in a Melee Bout : +2**
Further than 10 yards from shooter and Prone : +3
Behind Cover : Variable; See Below
*This is cumulative with the bonus for being in Melee if the character entered Melee this Phase
**A missile attack against a target in a Melee Bout which misses has a 5/10 chance of hitting another random combatant in that Melee Bout - including allies! Roll for the new target, then roll 1⁄2 the Missile
Pool rolled against the original target to determine BS. This hit is automatic but the shooter has no control over where the attack lands. All modifiers to original attack’s damage apply.

Cover
If a character is protected by Cover, their Missile Defense increases, and certain Hit Locations are removed from the possibility of being hit. Protected Hit Locations are re-rolled in the event of a missile attack hitting a target in Cover.

Cover Type : Missile Defense Bonus : Hit Locations Protected
Half Cover (Low Wall) : +2 : Legs, Groin, Hips
3/4s Cover (High Wall, Crenelations, Corner, Window) : +3 : Entire body below Chest
9/10ths Cover (Murderhole) : +4 : Entire body except Head

Shields vs Missile Attacks
Shields do not provide any bonus to Missile Defense. Instead, missile attacks roll for Hit Location on the Missile Hit Table, and may simply land on a location protected by the shield, in which case the shield’s AV is reduced from the attack’s damage as normal - probably nullifying it entirely. Remember what position the Shield is being held in!
>>
Active Defense
You spend the Phase ducking and dodging enemy attacks. Roll an ADR Test and add BS to your Missile Defense RS. If you declare Active Defense, roll it before resolving any other Actions - it applies against attacks that occur before your Initiative in the Phase, as well as those after. This can be performed either standing still behind one piece of cover, or while running along or between close (2-3 yards apart) pieces of cover.

Take Cover
Similar to Active Defense, but only usable behind at least Half Cover. You simply duck down and hide. You now have Full Cover, meaning you cannot be hit by attacks which would not penetrate the material you are taking cover behind. (You are still vulnerable to flanking attacks, though you count as Prone against them.) You cannot move faster than 2 yards per Phase while Taking Cover.

One question, the book say
"Characters must start play at or above a zero (0) B&B Point score, and cannot start play with a negative B&B Point score."

But to reach 0 you must pay at least 4 pcp.

How do you reach 0 (or higher) if the max amount you will have is less than 0 points?
Does this means I need to spend at least 4 pcp at bobes and banes?

I'll explain. You, of your own volition, willingly said something retarded in character. The Etiquette skill has literally nothing to do with that sort of situation, so your character's attributes aren't at fault. Try reading the rulebook sometime.

Here, I quoted it for your convenience.

>>
>>54622349
No, most of the time not, I guess.
The wit 1 character doesn't know at all how to behave in high society ("Etiquette is ESSENTIAL for functioning in high society"), so I may require a roll for that, depending on the circumstances.
>>
>>54622472
If you require a roll from the other party members as well, then it's fine.
>>
>>54622413
I assume it's to see who's superior. As far as I can interpret it, etiquette rolls aren't direct confrontations. It's like two male birds fighting to look the most fabulous, both are likely fabulous, but only the winner will attract the female they're performing for.

Two books come to mind, though neither quite fit your first choice of topic.

Sheaths and scabbards in England AD400-1100 by E. Cameron. Seax sheaths are covered in some detail although they differ a fair bit from latter dagger sheaths in style and construction. The book is also dense, dry and not cheap but if you want accurate information there is no better work for that period. The catalogue is an excellent visual resource with some really well preserved finds showcasing the decoration used.

Knives and Scabbards (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) by Jane Cowgill might also interest you. It covers 1100-1450 but is very much focused on domestic knives and their sheaths rather than military daggers. Again excellent quality, fairly readable and a good catalogue. There are copies kicking about online.

While knife sheaths were just made from leather, scabbars for daggers tended to be constructed in a similar way to those of swords a lot of the time which meant a wooden core which then had leather layered on top.

Wit has a lot of Skills Utility, but the fact of the matter in Combat is that once you enter the realm of high-powered fucktard warrior-gods, ADR 5 means you die. You cannot function with low Wit, even with high Agi because it doesn't go high enough. You will get your belly sliced open by the first person who notices that you can't win initiative tests.

You could probably compensate for this by building a character who has xbox huge armor and always goes defensive, but why?

The reason why Wit isn't included in 2/3rds of the skills anymore is because people already max it out as a matter of course, just like they max out Agility, because virtually there is no style of build in which having high ADR-related attributes doesn't advantage you.

D&D

A druid's animal companion was swallowed whole by a purple worm; the worm immediately retreated. Unwilling to leave his companion to such a gruesome fate, the druid wildshaped and leapt into the worm tunnel, making chase after it where the rest of the party could not follow.
He got lost where the tunnel breached the caverns, and stumbled, blind in the dark, into a patch of green slime. Nasty stuff, it's like a living gel of digestive fluids. and it grows quickly when it has something to feed on.
Like an arm.
Startled, then panicked, the druid returned to his human form, and quickly set about trying to fix the situation. He struck a torch, hurrying with a small spell, and got to work.
Washing the slime off didn't work, trying to cut the slime off directly was a failing endeavor, his few attempts at curative magics did little to help as the slime simply kept chewing away.
He never thought to put the torch to the slime, and so it grew.

The party would find him later, half-digested, with his other arm still grasping the knife he had been using to try to amputate the afflicted limb. He botched the last Heal check, and ended up dying as much to shock as to the slime.

>Idiots bank their entire economy on oil exports and fuck up everything, surprising nobody
>>
>>54660716
Venezuela's problem isn't that "they" banked everything on oil exports, that's a symptom of the larger disease. The problem that produced that sympton is that there was no economic freedom in the country, so the only industry that produced anything was oil, an ineffectual and primitive government-run enterprise that couldn't compete when the Saudis tanked the oil market to try and crush US innovation.

Diversifying an economy more or less requires economic freedom. There is no instance anywhere in the world of it happening otherwise. This problem was 100% ideological. All Chavez or his retarded manservant successor had to do was nothing. All they had to do was allow people to invest and build businesses in their country and none of this would have happened. Instead their low-information communist government fought every step of the way to defend the antiquated fossil of Socialist econ, and now their people will pay dearly through their bellies for it.

I don't feel bad. They voted for it, now they get it.

Like Maduro will have to use Bolivar's saber to fight off a quartet of Chilean assassins with machetes on the roof of the capital building, filmed in hi-def by every Iphone in the country. It'd be great.

One of the early tournament fechts involved a hoplite and a pirate fighting one another. Both were bleeding all over each other. The rules were different then: pain accrued more slowly, and bleeding was checked after every Round. One fighter ended up falling unconscious from bloodloss in the middle of battle, fighting to the last.

There was a way to build an Ohanedin such that you could reliably accrue 300 Bleed in one single Action. Every drop of blood in your body would evaporate and your body would wither into an unrecognizable husk within seconds. You can't do that anymore; an Ohanedin's body in 2.0 renders them unconscious rather than let them commit bloodend.

I've been trying to cool it on the political stuff lately. It's all fun and games when you're shitposting on 4gag, but we have a lot of new friends who aren't from our corner of the internet, and I don't want people to get the wrong idea. Culture shock, that sort of thing.

Nothing wrong with a bit of the old game here and there though, you know, we all need to vent from time to time. I just try to control myself more because I'm representing a company.

Lol.

What's so laughworthy about it?

His style is too iconic. We've tracked his anonposting back to him many of times.
>>
>>54675617
Not him, but that article is imminently basic. It's telling us things we all already know.
Although the author is correct in supposing that D&D normies would have no awareness of such things.

You are talking about *LARPs*, right? Because as I said >>54677879 Dagorhir and Belegarth, the two biggest*Boffer Sports* in the US fully embrace shield bashing, shield kicks, hooking shields with weapons, grabbing shields with hands etc.

Pic related is me charging a shield wall.
>>
>>54678637
And the aftermath
>>
>>54678096
Damn, those are spiffy.
>>
>>54678637
Dagorhir's shield rules are also fucking retarded.
While better than many LARPs, the fragility of shields and other specifics of their use far too often encourages players to protect their shields rather than use their shields to protect themselves.
>>
>>54683112
Well then those people are fools. Plus Red Weapons barely make1/6 of any battlefield.
>>
>>54683573
Then the chapter near me is made of fools.
>>
>>54683744
There are a lot of fools in dag for sure. Too many times I've seen people try to attack a superior opponent one at a time like, completely disregard unit cohesion or battle plans etc. I was just saying we don't have those pussy shield rules and aren't afraid to get a little dangerous.
>>
>>54678637
>>54678653
that looks gay
>>
>>54678637
why is armor so weak in dag
>>
>>54683931
Probably.

>>54683998
Speed and ease of combat, from what I understand, most LARPs have armor negate a lot more hits, and you have to keep track of that in addition to HP, special abilities, spells etc. Dag usually tries to keep it simple: armor gives 1 extra hit unless facing a two-handed weapon or bow. Quick, easy, and keeps it from being pay-to-win.

>most LARPs have armor negate a lot more hits, and you have to keep track of that in addition to HP, special abilities, spells etc.
most "larps" in the US. Also known as shit tier larps
>>
>>54684869
Yeah, fuck LARPing in general, I'm in for the sport.
>>
>>54684869
How do euro larps deal with armor?
>>
>>54676247
This author is the guy who wrote GURPS Technical Grappling. He's signaling his intent to write some kind of viking shield ruleset based on TechGrap.
>>
>>54687281
which one? because there are lots and lots of different approach. A few are just as worse as US larps but because the overwhelming majority of eu larps doesn't have the calling out numbers bullshit and the differnet kinds of damage idiocy it can be way more simple and allows a more fluid play.

There are several examples of systems which are "trust based" as they don't give you hard rules on armour, you decide if the hit you took could be stopped by it or not.
Obviously you need adults for this kind of game not manchildren who wants to win no matter what
>>
>>54661970
Well, they sure didn't vote for it in this last election.
>>
Does the Berserker boon's +4 WIP count as +2 tempory grit or what? If not I don't understand how that would lead to Damage and Pain Reduction. Also in the new rules, WIP is WILL right?
>>
>>54689620
>manchildren who wants to win no matter what
I hate fucks like that

>>54692038
+2 grit seems about right.
