bung it in the loot wagon with all the other priceless but somewhat delicate and/or unpawnable treasure we've collected to keep as artefacts of culture or curiosities around the great house when we get home from the Grand Tour, same as our ancestors and relatives.

Unless it has an obvious use, or is clearly brand new, then we sell it or give it as a gift to the next local dignitary. We can't be having useful shit around the house.

The Cleric spends the next hour meticulously sketching the entire object and comparing it with any notes he's currently made and rolling all possible knowledge checks to determine its origins.
The Rogue opens it without consulting the others.

The party probably dies except the sorc, who is now mist and also not there.

Figure out how it opens its portal and how to manipulate it, solve the puzzle box while under at least 100 meters of molten lava, open portal to Leviathans realm, laugh, kick back, smoke weed, wait for the next inevitable attempt on my life.

Us my insanely high Occult to determine just what it is.
Upon figuring it out, bury it somewhere nobody can possibly find it.
Fail to account for the one Daimah Nephilim previous PC from 6th heaven who has Shiny-sense and a knack for retrieving shinies she shouldn't fucking have.
She gets a hold of it, accidentally opens it.
Cenobites have to deal with basically pic related running around(at nearly a hundred miles an hour), poking their shiny bits, hugging the Femobite, and just generally avoiding everything they throw at her through sheer ADHD plus caffeine-level hyperactivity.

I think eventually Pinhead would just say 'fuck it' and boot her out of there, maybe putting a enchantment on the box keeping her from opening it again.
If the Empress gets sucked in, though, the Cenobites are doomed. Her bodyguard is a reality-buster when she's in danger.

Then I use my heavy crossbow to murder the idiot interested in the box before picking it back up.

Detect magic, identify. Likely attempt to solve it, having no meta knowledge of what it is.

If it's not super easy reason will eventually overtake curiosity, he'll take it back to their base and take his time studying the symbols on it, finding out if it has any significant cultural significance or anything like that, as well as studying it under a controlled environment to see if there's any magic fluctuations or anything to be concerned about.

Clive Barker is exceptionally good at describing horrifying purgatories and hellish landscapes. If anyone ended up in Leviathan's realm or in The Box from Jericho, they would suffer in ways they never even knew existed.

Well depending on your opinion of terrible things triumphing over time, space and sanity, there's always the Far Realm. The description of which opens with "There are worse places than Hell. This is a truth that must be accepted before including the Far Realm in a campaign."

It's basically inspired by a lot of Lovecraft mythos dialed up to "reality is a thousand layers of glass pressed together, inside of which rivers of milky fluid spill into the sky before bursting into eggs that release ticks the size of horses" and that's the most reasonable thing you'll encounter there. Just figuring out how to move causes San damage, and it's easy to suddenly have a literal brain full of spiders, grow tentacles instead of eyes, or backwards speaking begin.
