Gotta say, they look better without the big dumb missile launcher on the back making them look top-heavy. Now if only they could have made it so the flamers didn't look like they were haphazardly bolted on without any thought put into it.

Dreadnoughts with twin flamer fists were a thing in 1988.
>>
>>54467695
That's why I said Blizzard stole from GW first, or rather, they were inspired by GW. I don't remember if Warcraft was originally supposed to be a WHFB game or if StarCraft was supposed to be a WH40k game.
>>
>>54467746
That's a myth, neither are true. Warcraft was just heavily inspired by WHF, but it was never supposed to actually be a WH game.
>>
>>54467762
Alright, I could never tell, I heard it a lot but I never found anything confirming it.
>>
>>54467746
Both.
And Diablo is clearly also inspired by WHFB as well.
It's alright, though. In about ten years, when Blizzard needs to go back to the well Yet Again, they'll probably steal whatever mutant creations GW has that descend from Steampunk Balloon Mustache-Firing Dwarves, and Space Marine Scouts made out of Reaper and Soldier 76; then, a few years after that, GW will steal it back, and the cycle will continue.
>>
>>54467479
If I get any I'll probably just end up giving them terminator arms with a bit of converting to fit the proportions better.

>>
>>54468055
Because Diablo wasn't even a Blizzard game. It was developed by a completely different company called Condor which, just a few months before the game was released, was bought out by Davidson & Associates and renamed Blizzard North.

Furthermore, the notion that Warcraft was ever going to be a Warhammer game has never been supported by anything other than idiots like you repeating lies you heard from other idiots or, even better, from bitter GW employees. It's been reported by people that were actually involved in the game's development that Allen Adham was literally the only person that wanted to make a Warhammer game and he was overruled by the entire rest of the studio.
>>

I don't see how Diablo is inspired by Warhammer in the slightest. It might share some common inspiration sources, though, since Warhammer ripped off everything in the 80's.

>Ku'gath gave a sly look of delight, almost a smile. Typhus laughed.
>'You are foolish, my lord father, if you think this will end well,' said the first captain. 'We should have finished his realm while he was absent.'
>'Typhus, Typhus,' said Mortarion. 'So long you have lived, and so little you have learnt. What use is the destruction of a kingdom without the death of a king?'
>'A king without a kingdom is no king, but a vagabond. His suffering would have been pleasant meat to savour,' said Typhus. 'You court disaster in confronting him. Nigger every single tyranid organism IS the hivemind. That's the point, there is no central bug, no queen controlling all. The closest you could get is norn-queens but even those are just psychic nodes to help spread the field out, as well as being tyranid factories.
Having an "avatar of the hive mind" would completely destroy that idea.

Which is... The "female" equivalent of a hive tyrant. Which itself is just a smarter fighty bug that also spreads the psychic field around, acting as commanders. A and a dominatrix is just that, except titan-sized.
Again, the tyranids do not have queens ir centeal bugs who "control" the lesser ones. To be a tyranid means that you are the single cell of a super organism that is the hivemind. Does your body have a single super cell that controls the rest of you and tells the billions of other cells what to do?

That's a clickbait Kotaku headline. If you actually read the article, it's a repost of an earlier retrospective written by WarCraft: Orcs & Humans producer Patrick Wyatt, where he says:

>Allen Adham hoped to obtain a license to the Warhammer universe to try to increase sales by brand recognition. Warhammer was a huge inspiration for the art-style of Warcraft, but a combination of factors, including a lack of traction on business terms and a fervent desire on the part of virtually everyone else on the development team (myself included) to control our own universe nixed any potential for a deal. We had already had terrible experiences working with DC Comics on "Death and Return of Superman" and "Justice League Task Force", and wanted no similar issues for our new game.

Which means that WarCraft was almost a Warhammer game in the same way that the sky is almost green.

But good job showing us you can't read.
>>

Myself I like to imagine the swarmlord as just a specific build of a hive tyrant any hive fleet can call on and shit out of their birthing pods at any time should they deem it necessary. With there being other similar builds around as well that get mistaken for it.
It's even how hive tyrants work in the first place. They all preserve memories of previous battles and can be birthed again. The swarmlord simply being a particularly resource-demanding and old variant. Which us why he rarely gets deployed.
Him being "the original tyranid" is obscenely stupid.

Demanding "character" is how you end up with garbage like newcrons.
If you want character so much, play an RPG.
>>
>>54476195
Fair enough, if part of the draw of the army is that it doesn't have special characters then more power to you. It fits with 40k that they wouldn't because for them to have a special character that was, for example, capable of communicating with the outside universe in a way other than inarticulate screeching would effectively humanize them to a degree. As of now, they are basically a virus that has come to consume the galaxy, and thats part of their horror factor.

I get why you wouldn't want special characters, but it means that 'Nids will always be NPC in everyone else's mind and keep its player base relatively small. I suppose thats some of their charm, in a way, that if you are a 'Nid player in your group, you may be the only one.
>>
>>54481170
Nid player base being small (i don't believe you on this) has to do with the fact that they have been garbage for a decade and have steep barrier to entry due to model count or magnetization hassle.

No one in their fucking right minds play an army just because people talk in there.
>>
>>54481256
To be fair, I only haven't seen that many Nid players locally.

I'm not saying that people play a certain army because the characters 'talk'. I am saying that some people chose to play a faction for the lore and 'narrative' behind the army, which is harder to develop for an army with no (good) special characters to drive their storyline.

I don't disgree that the army might be uncompetitive if the only thing holding people in it is the narrative, and I also agree that you don't need a singular character to development a story, but having a few certainly helps.

Some people get into the game because they like the lore and playing out stories, some do it for competition, and some do it because they enjoy the mechanics of a certain army over another, and no reason is any less valid for buying plastic dudesmen. Sorry if I kicked off your reflex tyranid defense mechanisms.

>>
>>54484490

While I can totally see the 7 hits (average on 2d6) per model a threat, its still only range 8" (if I remember correctly). This means they get to fire once before a charge. The other setup, while not auto-hitting, can dish out 6+3.5 (average 1d6) will result in a good 6+ hits/turn for each model anyway! And having a 18" range gives them plenty of time to dish out the hurt before pummeling in to CC to use the fist.

And that's not all, as they all get to fire twice a turn, so you can double that to around 12+ hits/model/turn at 18" range. They just seem like so darn good with the other setup!

The only thing I really can see with the flame setup is the fun of having cooler looking models on the board. Hell, if the Primaris captain that came in the starter box could swap his glove out to something similar (with a buff aura of course), it would totally change the picture. But as it stands, he only helps the other setup as well (with re-rolls to hit of 1´s).

Much earlier, actually. You'll see proto-aquila pattern suits in the various rogue trader lead figures, and all the infantry in Space Marine (1989) are sporting mk7. (this is also when they made the various "proper" armour marks, 1 through 8).

They do show up sometimes, however, because some ork warbosses don't give a shit / are desperate enough to take whatever troops they can get.

You're looking at this from a human perspective and human goals. Tyranids want to eat. Orks want to fight. The stalemate doesn't happen because there's no great tactical commanders in play. The stalemate happens because both armies are halfassing it to keep it going.

>does the hive mind snap and deploy the swarmlord
That hurt me to read. Why, why the fuck would the hivemind "snap" at one planet full of orks? The tyranids are a disease. More tyranid ships will just get pulled towards the planet until
A. the tyranids win
B. there are no tyranids left to transmit the "come here" signal

Also, the swarmlord is a random ass hive tyrant. It doesn't need to show up for anything to happen.

>>54481642
>2-Does Ghazghkull show up or does a Warboss emerge
You know there's a lot of warbosses, right? And Ghaz being the most famous doesn't make him the best or even most powerful necessarily? A warboss could emerge, or there's probably already a dozen hanging out enjoying the infinite "death squigs" planet. They have no reason to want the battle to end. If anything, it'll be like Armageddon, where orks go there on purpose to fuck around forever.

The problem is that the SC armor is too big for humans to wear as depicted in the game, GW Marines can get away with it because the lore mention they're over from and deformed super humans, like super mutants in fallout, if you try to convince someone that a normal human can wear SC 1 armor that's too much of a stretch, so other people will believe it's a copy because of the SC 1 Marines deformed design

Blizzard isn't know for originality anon, fucking newfags doesn't even know about space crusade dreadnoughts
>>

dude wtf are you talking about, I'm not even saying they stole it, im saying i plan on converting a derdeo into a Goliath for a 40k army.

Honestly excited to do it as it seems really fun. I don't give a shit about you other fuckers arguing over who stole from who.

I'm talking rules wise and model wise, I have a bunch of extra bits from the Fire Raptor kit that I can use. So it wouldn't be too difficult.

Except, they didn't. The concepts used in both are so generic that GW doesn't deserve one iota of credit.

The artistic design, programming, and actual legwork are all Blizzard.
>>
While blizzard clearly stole all their ideas from GW, GW and all their properties are lawsuit the game: how far can we take copyright infringement before getting sued, the fanbase fighting simulator

While GW took it interestingly and made it their own crazy thing, Blizzard took it and kept it copying for several installments of each game, in addition they follow gws old business practices and ignore the fanbase to the point of neglect.

What it comes down to is no one has original ideas anymore and its really about execution of idea soup then originality
>>
>>54467792
Warcraft is less WHFB, Starcraft is more 40k. The stealing is mostly actually the tyranids/ zerg though, space marines have been around longer than either company, even with drop-pods

Don't you get it anon? Blizzard invented the scifi genre, everything was created by them, also the zerg were the original design for the alien Queen and both alien franchise and GW copied Blizzard
>>
>>54493342
Which fucking ideas? Name one, just one thing, in a Blizzard game that's a unique concept from GW. If I can point out an older, more generic source, shut the fuck up.

>inb4 green orcs

Green is a colour, they didn't invent Yves Klein green.

Orcs come from Tolkien.

The Tyranid aesthetic come from aliens (alien Queen and xenomorphs), not blizzard, both of them copied aliens for their own space bugs

And warhammer orcs were a deliberate departure from the cunning and industrious orcs of Tolkien. Visually and thematically.

between warhammer and the lord of the rings, it's real fucking obvious whom the guys at blizzard took inspiration for their orcs from.
>>

>>
>>54493895

She's got a part of the medic gun. She damage boosts, not grants invincibility. Medics also don't raise the dead or fly.
>>
>>54493832
Yeah, GW stole a lot. Necrons were just the Terminator robots, Tyranids were just the Xenos from Aliens, Space Marines were incredibly generic before they turned into monks in space, etc.

The Orks as they exist in 40k are probably one of the most unique sci-fi races in the game if you can get away from the fact that they are called orks. The whole genetically engineered weapon race made of fungus using their own teeth as money and cobbling together tech that works because they believe it does is super unique.
>>
>>54478978
It is insane how good that looks
>>
>>54493971
>The Orks as they exist in 40k are probably one of the most unique sci-fi races
True that, getting renamed as something else will highly improve the orks uniqueness
>>
>>54493686
Use the Valkyrie kit.

The Valkyrie has twin tails and the wings hunch down.
>>
>>54493909
It's interesting because they gutted the characters and split them in the different characters

For example thorbjorn and bastion are both a gutted engineer with few changes to make them not literal copies

Just like Bernhard and the pink Russian heavy gal are heavy weapons guy

English speed waifu and weird Brazilian guy are scout

Only to name a few but the other characters are also gutted versions of the team fortress characters with a minimum change

Also Mexican hacker girl is best girl
>>
>>54494173
And this is a problem why? Wholly original=/= good.

Overwatch has issues, but bitching about copying TF2 is fucking stupid.

At least Overwatch has every class/character played. TF2's struggling with it's 6s mode where good quarter of the roster never see the light of day
>>
>>54492814
It actually works with Blizzard proportions, believe it or not. The wearers hands end in the wrists, which accounts for the super lanky arms. The blizzard anatomy is for everything else.
>>
>>54494173
Who the fuck is Benhard?
>>
>>54494173
>It's interesting because they gutted the characters and split them in the different characters

They also added a lot. I mean, the scout doesn't teleport or recall to heal himself and the medic can't fly or damage boost.

I'd also really, really dispute Zarya being Heavy Weapons Guy other than being Russian. She's a primarily up close fighter, as most projectile weapons ourrange her gun. It's basically a fast firing vidya shotgun.
>>
>>54494303
Heavy is pretty short-ranged himself. The minigun only outranged the scouts shotgun for effective range.

That said he's still not really that close to Zarya. Zarya has a lot of utility to help her team out, Heavy is just a meatshield with a gun.
>>
>>54494265
The weird guy with the hammer, I thought that was his name

>>54493971
>Space Marines were incredibly generic before they turned into monks in space, etc.

Even at that, the hardass elite soldiers of the god-emperor sums up the Sardaukar.

Fantasy orcs also weren't that back then.
>>
>>54494602
>They don't borrow anything from GW's orcs except green.

That and being basically niggers ?

>>54492051
40k has only been an influence insofar as it stole shit from Aliens and Starship Troopers first, so anything copying either of those two is effectively copying 40k as well.

Not a legal loadout, but it would have totally been a cool thing if they had at least something.

>>54485153

As I stated earlier, if the captain in the starter set had an option to swap his gun-gauntlet to a flame gauntlet, and also give a re-roll for all flamers hits, these guys could really be a viable option. But as it stands now its really just "rule of cool" vs efficiency on the board.

I can't find that old picture. Have a new one.
>>
>>54495513
3rd edition Tyranids aren't actually particularly visually similar to zerg, the only thing they really have in common overall is blade like claws and also raveners which bear some resemblance to hydralisks (the 3rd edition ones actually looked less like hydralisks than the current ones).

Also your image is bad, it doesn't compare the same units across editions, and also uses the original plastic warrior sculpt rather than the actual 2nd edition one, so you're skipping a step in the design lineage. That carnifex is also an utterly ancient sculpt

If you actually want to compare tyranids across editions I suggest using units that changed a lot visually, but actually had their kits released during second edition and actually comparing them to their 3rd edition equivalents. I think good suggestions would be Hive Tyrants, Lictors, Tyranid warriors, Gargoyles and Hormagaunts.

I would not put a lot of stock in what Gonzoman has to say about this. I don't doubt that his direction was to stay away from the current GW house style, but the stuff about cerebrates contradicts what other devs have said about why they were removed; it's the same reason that there's no more colonial magistrate or executor, they removed the silent protagonist in order to focus on the named characters with dialogue. All of then were handwaved away, but in order to justify the removal of the PC cerebrate, they had to remove all the other cerebrates, too. You'll notice that they didn't get rid of the Overmind, which reappears on a couple of occasions.
