So I've settled on a legion, the Warmaster's own.
Is it a solid choice to base them around Death Dealers with a plethora of combis on Reavers, Veterans, Terminators, Seekers? I like combined regular with deep striking deployment so I'll be definitely getting some Dreadclaws, but the exact details are still far off.

It's like a nerve pulse, except Inferno barely pushed us past the depolarization threshold and then the announcement that we're staying in 7E crashed us WAY past the normal resting potential. Angelus is going to have to be good, given we've lost so many posters that we basically have no myelin sheath to speed things up anymore.

Well, I just found the Thallax lore while looking for cool Mechanicum units.

This is considerably more fucked up than anything I have yet found in the Legions, even the World Eaters and the assorted WB Daemon specials can be moderately happy SOMETIMES. Good god, Ordo Reductor, we need more of you just for the sheer WTF points.

My army ruleswise IS Traitor Reductor, but I think they will just get their usual portion of the DarkMech stuff along with most everyone else, not specialist stuff. Perhaps the Reductor could grab themselves a specialist suite of esoteric weapons, since so far they don't actually seem to have that much in the way of unique toys aside from Lightning Guns, Phosphex and Irrad, which aren't really unique to them. Some biological weapons or something, or maybe a more industrial version of the IED Decima put together.

I'd rather play 28mm using Epic Armageddon rules than use 8th. The game would be faster than 8th, better balanced than 8th, but also more detailed as well.

Finished most of the work on these three Guardians. Just need to do the bases and fix some minor things. While they obviously wield melta-type weapons I don't plan on using them as pyritite spears, which suck balls, but rather as the slightly more reasonable andrasite spears. They'll join another three custodes, those with regular guardian spears, in a Coronus.
And yes, I've seen that I forgot to cover the ejection port on the leftmost gun. It bugs me, but I see no way to do that without having to repaint the entire body of the spear.

That color distribution on the cataphractii is lovely, but I'd recommend some washes, at the very leas on the weapons, and maybe a hightlight.
Oh, and power weapon colors on the lighting claws, but that's realy up for debate.

Put a tiny amount of gs in there and paint over it a few times with whatever metal colour you did? Shouldn't be that hard. Alternatively just leave it how it is, not many people would notice and less would care.

Well, Loyalist Word Bearers are not legal. AFAIK they're the only entire army restricted like that, since Inferno didn't bother to slap that Loyalist tag on all the Custodes and SoS. Traitor Valdor is therefore absolutely a thing.

Sniper vets death dealers is nast with combi weapons.

I run my reavers in two ways and both as faster vets. Jump packs, volkite chargers, death dealers, chain axes and merciless fighters means It's boils down to a ton of strength 5 attacks in shooting and assault that connect. They usually hunt thallax/vorax/usarax/scyllax admech super easily or I point them at butchering vanilla tacticals or support infantry which they do with near impunity.

I'll usually run my master of signals with them since master of signals can take a jump pack, volkite charger, and a power axe. He usually hangs with them at first (even more strength 5 attacks) and then they break off while he drops some orbital bombardment or jumps around supporting other squads with cognis signing.

The other is jump packs and combi weapons and banestrike. They use their combi plasma or combi meltas to delete terminators or other high value targets and then use the banestrike with death dealers to delete already slightly attrited infantry squads. Using the jump packs to dictate the engagement.

Erebus's armour is covered in scripture, is just that the colour red doesn't show it too well. On the other hand,kor phaeron has some colchisian symbols but I think about him less devoted to chaos, just hungry from power. Also, the scripture that the word bearers portray on their armour is from Lorgar's book. I don't think it's very fluffy that his father and teacher would bear it on his armour.

Do you think anyone would be annoyed if I got a squad of pic related for use as Nurgle Gal Vorbak? They're about the right size, have similar stats and if I swap out the Plasma Gun to a Bolter the loadout is perfect anyway, there's even a Power Fist/Tainted Weapon Dark Martyr. I figured that since I have some spare Tzeench bits from another conversion I would make a themed squad of GV for each god, since all you'd need to do for Khorne is slap a Khornate icon on a regular squad and Slaanesh and Tzeench can just change a few bits and paint differently.

Not really, more little tentacle scout drones inside mechanized carapaces.

The fluff for them is that they're a simple tentacle creature Triedes encountered on the planet he turned into his Forge World. They aren't very intelligent, but their seasonal migrations were triggered by detection of magnetic field flux, which he discovered after they attempted to flock to some dynamos the fleet was constructing. This meant that a preloaded guidance pattern could be inloaded to the shells and triggered by artificial fields rather than having to maintain a constant noospheric connection, making them far less likely to be detected on the move.

A little more genetic engineering and a few prototypes later, boom, perfect scout drones to mix in with the cloned cannon fodder and bring back information on their opponents from the first planetary attack wave, with no risk to sentient observers.

Bits are more readily available than they were before, so there's no excuse; straight MkVII is still ree...but 30k relic armour is accepted in 40k. It's easier to use MkIV in 40k than MkVII in 30k.

I started with running two squads of 10 in lascannon proteus's, but that was adding up to 430 for two rad missiles and 3 lascannons. Wasn't working out very well even after I started expanding my army. I've been tempted to run a squad of 5 in an Achilles Alpha but that's still 450 for a missile and a brick that shoots volkites. I play tested it out but since the servitors don't have suspensor webs or relentless they usually get wiped out before I can get a volley off and if o do they're only BS 3 and scatter hard.

Sprayed all my Knight armour panels and bases for Occularis with Chaos Black and then Leadbelcher. Couple tiny patches where I had to remove sticky newspaper with a scraper (I can touch those up in like a minute) on the back edges of the shinguards, one kneepad and the bottom edge of one shoulderpad, everything else came out fine. I know that's not a uniquely Primarch problem, but it can look a little odd when Horus is beating the shit out of a guy while not even looking at him or Vulkan is trying to smash one of his own Firedrakes over the head.

First set of test bases for the Divisio Genetor - edge highlighting is a touch wide on the sides, but mostly I think they came out decently. Not complicated, just washes and runefang steel edges.

It’s usually slower during the summer. That’s not the primary reason, just another factor on top of everything else.

Mostly it’s excitement over 40k. In recent years, it felt like most of the people joining the Heresy train were sick of the crazy 40k meta but wanted to stay in the same universe, and 30k was perfect for that. Then 40k promised to change so they all looked back. They might be back. It’s normal for a game to become balanced when it’s using basic lists in the main rulebook, but lose that balance as codexes come out. I don’t expect it to get half as bad as it was during 7th, but it’ll lose its shine.

We may have trouble getting new players in, though, since almost of all them/us started as 40k players and now the rules are too dissimilar.

They’re both pretty cool. The most interesting NL list I’ve heard of was read out on a Radio Free Isstvan episode; it was a Sacrificial Offering list using the ship’s crew as militia behind a Wall of Martyrs. Just imagine the humans in the NL trilogy being given a rifle and a few heavy weapons and shipped down to the surface. The NL part of the list was a mix of bikes and dudes in Rhinos, and I the Praetor on bike joined a squad of 5 attack bikes with multimeltas. Seems like an odd choice but they’re 2W each and get 3A since they have bolt pistols and CCWs. They’ll get some attention in Infernus, maybe Atramentar?

On the other hand, Imperial Fists will get more stuff in the long run, once the Solar War starts. But that’s like 3+ books away.

They’re a little dull right now, with one plastic kit, one resin upgrade kit (bolt pistols), and one resin transport with a nasty points/money ratio (though it does look great). The plastic kit’s great (albeit too tall) but right now you have to use it to build your HQ, Elite, Troops, and Heavy Support entries and that’s just lame. The bolt pistol kit sucks, imo. No one looks like they’re shooting both at once.

Even if every unit entry had a kit, they’d be hard to recommend as a stand-alone army in 2000+ point games. Great in ZM though, and in larger games you would just add Custodes for the firepower you’re missing.

Are they already built? The more you mix in some plastic Mk IV and resin Mk V bits, the better. And absolutely no Mk VIII. There will be accusations of laziness, especially if you use 40k bikes instead of jetbikes and outrider bikes (which are scout bikes + resin bits and Mk IV riders).

Anyway, White Scars in 30k love their bikes, and jetbikes, and also power glaives on characters. They’ve got strong rules, currently found only in Book 6: Retribution.

Yeah! I'd been deliberating between DA, SW, SoH and AL for the longest time, but SoH have the suitable temper.
Well the alpha punch followed by keeping constant pressure with fast units is what I'm going for. I'm somehow partial to Reavers over Vets, volkite and melee options help a lot. Also plasma Outriders.
The paint scheme variance is simply great with the artwork from old Collected Visions up to modern FW.

I see what anon is saying. The gold and purple are individually good, but somehow blend into each other. They're obviously different in hue, but similar in saturation and value. Imagine a generic mini painted with dark orange next to dark purple; a more pale shade of gold might have worked well too.

The blue contrasts well though, and that saves the scheme. And the base will help. Keep it pale.

8E simplified movement whilst also adding variable movement values. Its save system is simply better than 7E's, meaning lightning claws aren't turboshit against terminators like 7E's "AP2-or-nothing" (and 2+ saves are much more common in 30k). Character special rules essentially still do the same, which tells you something about how most of them can be replaced by generic auras, and FW's characters still have flavour, completely nullifying the fans' fears of blandness.
Their cash grab scheme reworked stuff and made those shitty entries nobody ever uses into something either viable or good (buy miniz plox ;^)). And at least GW is paying attention and Blizzard-fixing stuff with numerous patches, instead of just saying "such is the game" like it used to.
The main complaints would be the inability to cripple a Land Raider turn one, and the morale system, and for the later the ones complaining are usually Space Marine players, aka the One Army that never cared for morale.
FW 8E indices and fan-made ported 30k versions have shown it can be done without sacrificing fluffyness or gameplay.
What I'm saying is, BOTH 8th fans and 7th fans are wrong because fanatism itself is wrong, and the ones waiting on the 7.5E patch will be sorely disapointed, especially from a company as silent as FW, who wouldn't even acknowledge a damn cake.

I like the return to 2nd ed-style armor and cover rules, with modifiers. But I can see the pro-7th argument that its all-or-nothing nature encouraged taking different weapons for different tasks to a greater extent than 8th.

Not that anon, but because armour modifiers aren't affected by how strong the armour actually is as such, there's often a downright best option. Medium strength weapons spammed en masse in 8e is the god build AFAIK, since it's more possible to have a "best against everything" gun option. Sure, mass lasguns/splinters or similar is a poor plan, but there are much less situational loadouts with the demise of templates and the introduction of armour mods. It's possible to calculate the best option in about 90% of situations for most units, which won't change based on cover or enemy positioning aside from flat range and complete LoS block because cover is +1Sv now.

Except they don't, because the viable option is now determined by about ten seconds of maths and everything else can go hang. Sure, it'll reduce the AP2 spam some, but given that 8e has so far also completely gutted unit customization there's no reason to take most of the weapons. There's no more Blasts, so packing in a massive horde shoulder to shoulder around a unit for melee isn't actually a downside in any way given flamers and artillery will still do 3.5 hits/shots flat.

Admittedly the small blast spam is really annoying, but THOSE could easily be abbreviated to D3/D6 shots each and leaving the artillery and the flamers intact.

Basically, mathhammer is now far more reflective of what actually happens in a game, and coupled with the "medium weapons kill anything fairly well/loads of pissweak attacks/crappy wounds are almost unstoppable and almost invincible respectively" just means that the optimal option is instantly found and spammed to fuck, especially with no detachment limits.

Look at the early 8e tourneys. Razorwing spam, Stormraven spam, Bobby G in every list. That's not a unit problem, although it can be partially solved with individual unit nerfs, that's a problem with the core rules. You want even MORE lists like Sekhmet Spam, Caladius Spam and Quadmortar Spam?

The difference is that in 8th, your non-optimal choices will still be playable. That Autocannon may be overall worse than both a Heavy Bolter and a Lascannon, but at least it does decent damage against everything from a Land Raider to MEQ.
In 7th, that Autocannon is either amazing against 4+ and light tanks or absolutely worthless against 3+ and heavy tanks. It's not good for a game to be this polarizing and binary with metas as small as two people's collections.

WAACfags will always be WAACfags and optimize, but the system can at least allow casuals use any loadout they want without getting branded as a retard.

How did advancement/promotions work in the legions? Obviously it will depend on the legions but did it roughly go,

Yes, it is shitty writing bias, but that doesn't mean that they have to make Guilliman overpowered enough to take down two Knights who cost three times what he does while making every weapon in a 15" bubble around double strength with Reroll all To Hit/Wound, PLUS he gives you +3CP AND you only use 2/3 of a point each time.
He's comically overpowered compared to pretty much anything else in the game bar perhaps Magnus, hence why he's allied into the vast majority of Imperium tourney lists. He should be around 600 points IMO.

He is the exact same in the codex, yeah. He also has a fixed Warlord Trait as an Ultramarine character that means that whenever you spend a CP, roll and you get it back on a 5+, hence the "2/3 of a CP" thing.

I just like glowing swords, if necessary I'll just fluff them as superheated blades or some nonsense. Transonics are vibroblades, you're right, but as they removed the actual fluffy rules of them with 8th Edition and replaced them with Mortal Wound on 6+ To Wound they can just be any especially choppy sword.

If you watch closely you'll see Perty's bare hands punch as non-unwieldy Powerfists in the enemy's deployment zone. Also, Iron Havocs are destribed as using plasma cannons, which they can't take in-game. The power of cutscenes, I suppose.

Not really. In 8th, high-strength, medium-AP weapons like autocannons can serve a lot roles - they may not be ideal, but you can use them to decent effect against heavy tanks and flyers. In 7th, it's more important to make room in your list for S9 weapons and skyfire weapons. It's a little more paper-scissors-rock.

I don't see FW differentiating between tactical armor marks, but everything else, sure, why not? The lazy route would be to apply this "-1 armor to the sides and/or rear" (not sure which would make more sense) to anything with the Tank keyword - but not the Heavy Tank keyword, since heavy tanks traditionally had good armor all around. But it could be extended to all vehicles and walkers. FW's free to not to any of these things.
