They personally operate on a Mafia-like level, but the aristocratic nature is more bestowed on them by others. Human nobles like them in their circles because of their beauty and skill.

Their realms are enchanted locations, with many magical enhancements to quality of life. They love to hold parties in their realms. These parties can get wild due to rivalries and passions.

The once great Elven empire, having fallen due to decadence, is now divided into many rival houses. These houses look for allies with other houses or in the societies beyond the elves.

Satyr like, small in size, effeminate compared to their larger neighbors.

Elves (and dwarves) in my setting are total bros to humans. Dwarves helped them invent the wheel, Elves taught them how to make fire. They all watch each others' backs and keep each other from transforming into demons/orcs/goblins/etc. Also the elves aren't magically immortal, living only about 100 years or so, but they remain eternally youthful until their bodies just start breaking down due to old age. They can be smug, but humans get to be smug right back.

I treat 'elf' as a general term for several races belonging to the same fey species. Generally speaking they are the elder race, and have both higher magical capability and resistance due to being crafted before the laws governing these things were fully in place. They mature at the same rate as humans but do not age - they are technically immortal in the biological sense, predating the concept of biological mortality, but eventually an elf will succumb to psychological langour or grief and fade away, or self-destruct in a spectacular warp-spasm. Most elves live between 300-350 years. They can theoretically live forever if they have endless willpower, but only exceptional individuals are like this.

Physically, elves have better senses, reflexes, and are faster than humans, and different races have different innate powers. They have overall much lower sexual dimorphism than humans, as the gods had yet to figure out gender when they were created, meaning they are taller on average but don't often grow to the greater human heights. The sole exception are Wild Elves, who have extreme sexual dimorphism; their men are generally 6'2" at the shortest and powerfully built, whereas their women are usually no larger than 4'9" and waifish to the extreme.

There are multiple beliefs regarding their origins, even within elvish society. The two most popular are, 1. that they were the first creations of the gods, serving as their soldiers in the war to claim the material realm, and, 2. that they were the initial prototypes for humanoid life, and were eventually abandoned by the gods as uninteresting. Elvish religions that ascribe to 2 usually believe that they as a race were responsible for ousting the gods in retribution, and this is why their presence is rarely felt.

There are six elvish races.

1. Aesidhe. Also known as Gold Elves. Aesidhe are fair, leaf-eared humans in appearance, with gilded skin and milky eyes. They tend toward having more pointed features than the other elvish races, and are considered exceptionally beautiful among elves, though their vaguely insectile movements can be offputting to humans. Magic comes to them more easily than any race. They often enjoy positions of power and influence within Daesidhe-majority nations. 3. Slaugh. Also known as Pale Elves. Shorter than the other elvish races on average, the Slaugh are furtive, secretive creatures that live in small groups and are often a disliked minority when they settle in elvish nations. Though generally considered untrustworthy by other elves, their alabaster skin and particularly slender features are considered highly desirable in several human nations. 4. Vaki. Also known as Changelings or Grey Elves. Grey skinned, almost translucent creatures with pointed ears and soft, indeterminate features, Vaki are shapeshifters. They are rarely trusted outside of elvish nations and live through deceit and stealth. They are the greatest example of low sexual dimorphism in elves, having no true gender and being able to change their sex at will. Their organs and fluids are exceptionally useful for the creation of magical reagents and as such they can rarely live openly. It is a well-documented fact that the pointed teeth of a Vaki elf contains a mind-influencing venom, normally too weak to do much but confuse and disorientate, but with multiple doses it can make its victims extremely susceptible to brainwashing and memory-manipulation. Specially treated dosages can be used, in small amounts, to make a victim specifically suggestible and protective to the originating Vaki, though to achieve this effect it cannot be administered directly by a bite, and the effect is subtle enough that calling attention to it is enough to negate the toxin's influence.

5. Darreagh. Wild Elves lack the drive to build and settle in stable populations, living as hunter-gatherers when found in the great outdoors. With feral features, sharp canines, and bright, catlike eyes, they are thought of by humans as unruly and base. Unlike other elves, Darreagh have extremely high sexual dimorphism; male Wild Elves are tall and powerfully built, though still slender, and have more pronounced animal features, as well as more prominent body hair than other elves. Female Wild Elves are small and waifish, with much larger, floppy ears and padded feet that make them adept at avoiding trouble. Female Wild Elves are highly attuned to the flow of magic. Males are almost deaf to it, instead capable of manifesting extraordinary bursts of strength and speed, as well as a partial physical shift toward some predatory animal. In the wild or in civilization, Darreagh live in packs, often composed of one male and several females. 6. Letheans. Whether the Letheans are a distinct race is uncertain, though many believe their ancestors were Slaugh. Truly, a Lethean is any elf from the Black Isles, where the vast city of Letheen has stood since the earliest ages. The Letheans are known to the rest of the world as aloof raiders and slavers, insular in all ways but how they express their arbitrary cruelties, and protected by ancient magics and crafts that the other elvish races forsook long ago. Lethean society is a polite nightmare of extreme, nihilistic hedonism. Though thought arrogant, Letheans are simply without morality or purpose; they have forsaken all philosophy but that of gratification. A mythic scourge, the city of Letheen is a crumbling monument to the achievements of a civilization consumed by self-interest, where the darkest of arts and the cruelest of delights are the most pedestrian and banal of distractions.

My elves are the lineal descendants of the ancient power that built the world all of the races reside in. They're a fallen race, in essence, but their science and craftsmanship is still the finest in the world.

Their forebears' original slave race, the dwarves, achieved independence before the fall of the First Empire and have mastered magic and war.

The forebears' experiments resulted in the creation of orcs (much closer to half-orcs in other settings; semi-nomadic hunter/shepherds with no real war fixation, no demon possession, etc), humans (a cross-breed of elves and dwarves), and prue (gnomes, basically). The forebears were giants; the giants that still walk to the world suffer from the Old Gods' Curse, their intelligence greatly diminished and their ability to remember longer than the next morning gone.

The elves control the Empire of Wind and Water, astride the tallest peaks and surrounding the Upland Sea (think the Caspian Sea). The dwarves were mostly driven out of those mountains; they reside mostly in the foothills now.

The setting also has three types of half-elves: two true-breeding societies that originated with the mixed race and the more traditional "an elf and a human bone" kind of half-elf.

The traditional half-elves enjoy positions of respect and authority, acting as intermediaries between the Empire and other lands.

One thing I always disliked about the traditional elf portrayal is the focus on archery.

There's only so much you can do with a bow, but with hundreds of years to practice your martial arts you can hone your swordsmanship or spearmanship to a high degree. Additionally elves are supposed to be dexterous, sure footed, lithe and quick which are qualities that help melee martial arts more than they do archery.

Thus, when I run settings with elves, I make it so they're famous for their martial artists, people who devoted the entirety of their lives to the singular pursuit of perfecting their art (which is rare for my elves, because who the fuck can spend 400 years doing the same thing over and over) until they achieve levels of bullshit ability comparable to Jackie Chan movies.

Aside from that, most elven cultures I run tend to be conservative and cautious, because seeing as elves don't die of old age, death comes from disease, combat or accidental injury (the more time you spend alive, the greater the probability that you'll be struck by lightning or have a rock fall on you or something).

In the setting of my current campaign the main group of elves consist of bickering ancient Greek style city stated that came to be dominated by a human empire that is essentially sassanid persia. They are notorious in the setting for being the only group of elves to ever be conquered by a non elven race. Now they spend their days providing troops, goods and slaves to help not-persia fight an long lasting war with not-eastern roman empire/Byzantium.

These elves are also deliciously brown as is proper.

Pretty much three kinds. Terrestial elves are closest to stock elves, in that they're linked to the forest and are unfathomably beautiful. They also mine, as long as they can find a natural cave, and tinker with what they find.

Lunar Elves are closer to bunny people, unfathomably lucky and tend to focus their civilization around better entertainment.

And the Jetter Elfs. Think Lelf mixed with Ork with a healthy dose of animu knife-ear style. Highly futuristic, with ki-powered giant robots. Moved to the planet the game takes place in because their home planet got built too densely for jetpacks.

Most elves live in tribal societies in the wilderness. They have a strong affinity for magic, which they mostly use in druidic and shamanistic way to commune with nature. Some elf tribes are friendly with humans and regularly trade with them, while others avoid contact with other races and some outright kill any outsiders entering their lands.
The two other kinds of elves are the high elves, who live in a single magical city which they rarely leave except to deal with things they consider a threat to the security of the world (usually to secure some dangerous magical item to prevent younger races from breaking reality or something, or to kill evil spellcasters), and the dark elves, who are a theocratic society whose religion centers around worshiping eldritch gods and seeking to break the barrier separating reality from the void where their gods dwell so that they may remake the world in their image and free mortals from the chains the false gods have imposed on them (which as far as everybody else is concerned would mean the end of the world, as those "chains" include things like causality and laws of physics). They're led by an immortal high priestess who may or may not actually be an eldritch abomination, and have a thing for blood sacrifice, summoning aberrations, seeking to crossbreed elves and aberrations, and wearing fancy masks.

Biologically elves are somewhat taller and more slender than humans. They have fast reflexes and are very nimble and quite strong, but lack endurance. They have somewhat less pronounced sexual dimorphism than humans, with males and females having similar height and strength. They're not immortal, but have an average lifespan of several hundred years.

Elves in my setting were a failed attempt to make humans like in Hesiod's Bronze Age. They were formed from an ash tree so they have dark skin and greenish-hair and are tougher and stronger than ordinary humans. However, they are incredibly violent and prone to war with a Gallic culture that often puts them at odds with human civilization. They ruled the Northern Continent until the Orcs (Silver Age 'humans' who refused to worship the gods and were sent away) returned from their exile and won a Pyrrhic that allowed humans (Iron Age) to flourish into the present day. Elves were cursed to return to trees after a certain point in their long life, ultimately becoming completely immobile but aware of their surroundings until their minds finally died. Elves are fiercely territorial and protect great groves of their deceased, whose trees still bear their faces jutting out from the bark.

Immortal "fallen" fey. Can't reproduce the usual way, steal human children and slowly (over about a decade) turn them into elves. For obvious reasons not popular with humans. If the children gets rescued before the transformation is finished, it will end up as changeling (or half-elf in D&D speak) Can use illusions to disguise and hide themselves. Allergic to iron and steel: can't stand using most weapons of those materials (polearms and missiles are kinda OK, if they can get it, but anyone using iron weapon is seen as insane and dangerous), iron armor means unpleasant and certain, though slow death if not removed fast. Contact with iron messes up their illusions and reveals them. Pretty low-tech, and their magic isn't really helpful in that respect, use items made from wood, bone and stone (obsidian is pretty much their signature material), rarely bronze or enchanted silver (i.e. mithril). Don't really do much: steal children, hide in the wild and slowly go extinct as humans technology encroach on their natural habitat. May or may not be entirely female and lewd despite not being able of sexual reproduction, depending on how /d/eviant the fa/tg/uys I play with are.

In my other setting, what passes for elves are basically vikings. Tall, blonde (beards rare, but not unheard of), muscular raiders and sailors feared by anyone who knows them. Long-lived but not immortal, both strong and agile, more known for swordsmanship and dual-wielding than archery. Use either illusory magic to conceal and disguise themselves (mostly domain of women) or to manipulate weather, in particular mist, fog and wind (mostly males)... the later is (for obvious reasons) is better known and elves are often called "mist raiders".

Again allergic to iron, though not to such extent, and they are more advanced than the former incarnation... mostly use bronze weapons and armor, particulary fond of swords and axes. It's not a natural trait this time, but a result of a species-wide curse from dwarves.

In ancient past, dwarves fought war with the dragons who desired their shinies. When elves first came to the continent, they allied themselves with the dwarves, and their weather magic proved itself a key weapon in the war. Dwarves gave elves access to iron and steel equipment they lacked before. Unfortunately for the dwarves, elves, just like dragons, desired dwarven wealth and betrayed the dwarves, destroyed their realm and made them almost extinct. As an final act of revenge, the last dwarven "king" cursed elves to never be able to use the dwarven bling they wanted so much. Curses being one of dwarven magic specialities (other being creation of magic items), this ended up working pretty well and it's considered the greatest curse ever used.

Also, "elf" comes from dwarven language, meaning traitor. The few remaining dwarves kill elves on sight, and because they are not stupid and know they are finished (while immortal, dwarves in that setting are genderless and the last king was also the last one who knew how to awaken/create new dwarves), taught the secrets of steelmaking to the humans to deal with the pointy-eared dicks for them.

They're the last remnant of an old empire, but really just a shadow of it larping as something better.

Their capital city was founded by humans. But they've renamed it something elvish. The original capital city of the elvish empire has long since been sacked by humans they call barbarians (who though they have rounded ears call themselves elvish successors too).

I run two types of elves, Kagonesti, and Quendi.

The quendi elevs are noldor style high elves. Tall, blonde, white skinned, and immortal. By dedicating their lives to piety, asceticism, and academics, they have achieved immortality and enlightenment. However they are very few in number, less than 1% of the worlds population. They tend to be ultra benevolent, when they are not secluded in their hermitages.

The kagonesti are average sized, athletic, brown skinned, primitive, fetish bait. Kagonesti live a tribal lifestyle, full of sex and leisure. In groups their inherent magic conglomerates into an aura, which causes the earth to better provide for them, so they rarely worry about necessities.

They are especially susceptible to magically inherent hyper evolution. If a kagonesti lives on the seashore, it may eventually become a mer-folk. If they live in the high mountains, they may become a bird-folk. They often engage in casual bestiality, which leads to even more half-breed races. Almost all "demi-humans" can trace origins back to kagonesti.

Kagonesti are immune to the "genetic" side effects of incest, and have no concept of social conventions like monogamy, so they practice uninhibited free love. They typically mate 2-3 times a day, unless the female is in estrus, then 5-6 times a day.

Thier unique traits make the females ideal candidates for kidnapping for sex slavery. Their simple nature and naivety means physical force is hardly needed. When raped they readily succumb to their primal urges and accept the male as an alpha. After being held in captivity fr a short while, their adaptive magic tends to make their bodies more voluptuous, but less inconveniently fertile.

The kagonesti don't seem to mind when they lose some females. They merely adapt and give birth to more. And it keeps the war-like races from wanting to harm them, since they readily produce a luxury resource.

In the wild, there was a large tribe of kagonesti in which all the males were eliminated. Under such extreme circumstances, the females rapidly grew male genitalia, and continued breeding as normal.

In captivity the magical adaptation changes her body to better suit the lustful desires of her captors, so she can more easily "survive" in the slave lifestyle. Besides becoming more voluptuous, and developing a submissive personality, they will have other unique changes, such as growing a longer tongue, and developing an erogenous zone in their throats.The females urge to breed is at odds with her desire to please her masters. Although fertility decreases dramatically to prevent inconvenient pregnancy, which means less time to pleasure her masters, she still needs to breed. The children of captive kagonesti tend to look predominately like the captors race, someone being unrecognizable as a half breed, increasing the chances they will be accepted as a native to that society. When attempts are made to completely avoid impregnation, the slave females have developed clever and hidden ways to become fertilized through mouth or anus. Due to the futility of preventing these offspring, most societies which keep kagonesti slaves girls have come to accept them, since they are generally very healthy, and act like the native species. Their true ancestry only becomes apparent when they reach puberty, and discover their acutely powerful sex drives.

Arrogant, racist, nationalist who the world has shat on. 3000 years ago there was a massive empire that unified most of the Elven tribes. Their lust for luxuries and wealth led them to, at first, conquering lands to gain riches and enslave Dwarves to work the mines. Yet that was not enough, so they started enslaving all non-Elves to work (citing racial superiority) the every expanding farms and mines to supply the military. 2500 years ago, the empire went bankrupt, Centaur tribes ravaged the southern lands, Osterling (Easterner) Humen tribes mass migration from the north, and a slave revolt destroyed the empire. Endless civil wars broke up the empire to tiny kingdoms which other races (mostly Humen and Dwarves) exterminated, annexed, or drove north. Now they live in reservations, as second-class citizens, or just get hunted down.

Their Ancient Tongue down fall under three different language groups. Osterling is used the least but is common amongst the only independent Elven states in the east. Vsterling is a shared standardized writing system used in the western reservations but the spoken dialects are different. Obr'schpeil is the closest to Ancient Elven and is spoken in the southern realms where people actually treat Elves better than the northerns. The Osterling Elves have Elf-Man hybrids who can carry or impregnate to have kids with Humen or Elven to make more hybrids. These offsprings can get fat like Man, have pointed ears like Elves, with a lifespan of 150 it is still less then Elven average. Vsterling Elves have grown immune to various natural (and supernatural) diseases that other Elves wish they had back 600 years ago when an engineered plague killed off 1/4 of the continent's population. "Modern" Elven pan-nationalism came from the disgruntled Elven citizens of the southern cities after the end of the Human religious wars 500 years ago. Skiing Elven guerrillas now fight a war of independence in the northern Skansa Empire.

Northern Elves where never truly integrated into the Elven Empire and are called Skan'volk for being made up of colonist or Elven barbarians who never joined the empire. There are too many different language groups and dialects to name for the Skan'volk Elves but they all share a hatred for the Skansa Empire. Back 200 years ago, Skansa failed to conquer the Osterling states but won in holding the northern lands. Constant local revolts to the self-declared empire now made the Zar Alexze II enact mass extermination of certain Human tribes and Elves through starvation or labor camps to secure the north. From the suffering of the northerns came the stories of skiing Elves in winter fur ambushing Skansan soldiers in the middle of a blizzard.

Vsterlings were at first, losing the most in the fall of Elvenheim, the mythical capital of the empire. Petty governors, Dwarven revolts, and Humen mass migration drove the Elven deeper and deeper into isolation. Living in the forest of the west, they unintentionally became the most in touch with nature compared to every other race. For 600 years after Elvenheim's fall, they became backwards and primitive, forgetting how to make carriages, crossbows, and cement. Eventually forced to live as oppressed peasants or on reservations when the migratory Human kingdoms finally annexed the Vsterling kingdoms. Often stereotyped as sorcerers tapping into forbidden blood magic, this was true back 1800 years ago when Vsterling kingdoms still fought the Migrant Kingdoms. In that time, they used blood magic to possess, torture, and kill Dwarven and Human nobles.

Osterlings consider themselves the "true descendants" of Elvenheim as they are the only truly independent Elven states in existence in the world. All others to the north, south, and west have been subjected or destroyed by non-Elves. Most of the Human Osterling tribes either made deals to coexist with the Elves, died trying to take the fortress cities, or circumnavigated around the Osterling cities. The original Human auxiliary troops who became citizens in the defense of the cities now make up the majority of the non-Elf population and where the first to see a spike in Elf-Human hybrid. Non-Elves became more integrated into the Osterling states once the Migration Wars ended 2200 years ago. Much of ancient Elven knowledge and history is preserved by the Osterling cities. Due to the lack of resources and expertise, most of the ancient Elven technology and magic can't be recreated.

Uter'Elv exist in the southern realms and can trace their bloodlines back to the time of the Elven Empire and supposedly lived the closest to Elvenheim. Elven nationalism was created in the southern cities in the ashes of third time religious strife plagued the lands. Annexation of much of the south by Centaur tribes destroyed the infrastructure in the lands then the Human settled to eventually rule half of the south 2000 years ago. By that time, religious zealots from Humans and Centaurs burned up much of Elven writing. From 1700 years ago until now, the Uter'Elv banking clans still control much of the financial sector in the south but it appears reforms after the Religious Wars will put an end to Elven reliance. This nationalism was made to try to recover the lost culture of Elvenheim while expanding influence over the southern realms, and used by politicians for benefits of the state.

Although Elves seem to just be tall skinny Humens there are differences in their body. Hyperactive metabolism in Elves leaves them always skinny (and hungry) and other races found out the cheapest and fastest way to exterminate them is by mass starvation. It also mean they have unnaturally fast reflexes and reaction time compared to other races. Medicine, potions, and toxins also take effect on the Elven body much faster then Humens. Ancient Elves found out the hard way when they accidentally poisoned themselves trying concoctions to gain immortality. Most modern Elves have a lifespan of 200 years although it is said to have been longer during the apex of the Elven Empire. As living conditions improve, so does the lifespan, and it has seen a slow steady increase since the fall of Elvenheim.

Another thing to note is that Elves have hypersensitive zones on their body where great pain or pleasure can be felt. Dwarven torture techniques developed at a rapid pace once they found this out from captured Osterling Elven nobles in the trade wars 400 years ago. The tips of Elven ears, palms, and soles are where the most sensitive spots are but lesser known spots also exist. That is the reason why Obr'en Elves in the south always wear fingerless gloves and socks from around 300 years ago til now.

I like my elves as the result of experiements made by humans to create a new race of mentally strong people more in tune with the setting's equivalent of magic for various reasons (be it as weapons, as slaves, out of a misguided attempt to force a stagnant humanity on the next evolutionary level OR just because).
