Pathfinder. Talked a somewhat confused GM into letting me play a Dreamscarred Press Psion Telekineticist with prestige levels in D&D 3.0 Soul Blade prestige class. The result was a gish character somewhat more powerful than even I had anticipated building it.

Not 3.5 Fighter/Wizard/Abjurant Champion/Eldritch Knight stronk exactly, but better than straight PF Magus, if I do say so myself. I accidentally some Tier 2 shit, and it wound up being pretty fun.

The campaign had fiends as a major part of day to day struggles. Some were feral and wanted to eat everyone else, others were intelligent but still wanted to eat everyone else. Or so the GM had told us.

I built my background on that. As a child, Isho had watched his girlfriend die to fiends, his pitiful magic did jack all, and thus he joined up with the guild to kill fiends. All good fun.

We were using the now defunct SeeD FFRPG crystal system, which meant that while not in combat we could hotswap jobs and amass abilities.

Black Mage had geomancy (makes enemy elemental resistance one step worse, from absorb->null->resist and so on), magic burst, which increased my time between turns but doubled a single target spell's damage if someone hit that target right before my turn, and lots of elemental spells. White Mage had cures and the Holy spell, which was a single target nuke.

Isho, when focusing on nuking single targets, was very slow and needed a willing party member to do maximum damage, but the others deemed the setup needed worth it. When that wasn't viable, he could area damage and heal with the best of them.

That's so much minutia, though. I had a reputation for playing crazy lolrandum characters, who would juggle lit sticks of dynamite for laughs. Isho was an entirely different crazy, the kind who would invite you and your girlfriend to dinner, and during polite conversation outline his plans for genocide.

He burned nests of fiends. He ended squabbles between groups by blaming the fiends for the loss of life (usually accurately), and saying aggression not directed at them was wasted.

It was during one fight with a human/fiend hybrid Isho explicitly stated he didn't want the enemy redeemed, or to surrender, or to have a second chance in life. He just wanted him tortured for all eternity in hell.

Quote the GM: "(He) looks at you, and his look is almost pitying. What must it be like, to live with such rage?"

Played a PC like this in a not-40k setting. She was a high school student from a planet that was basically Nocturne if it was set in the 90s. High grades, good student, serial killer meticulous killing off criminals and corrupt officials on her planet until it eventually became a fascist dictatorship and cleaned up its crime problem with brutal effectiveness [not that she was the dictator].

And that was just the backstory. She got picked up the Not-Inquisition and she not-Exalted and was the most righteous and upright of all the party members, loyal, pure, and devoted to a fault.

She also hated all aliens and wanted to see them killed. Usually with utter indifference, it was simply what was done. God ordered it, and I'm sure she knows what she's doing, and this girl [now in her 20s] was going to devote her life to righteousness and achieve the best possible afterlife for herself, gliding into it on an ocean of blood.

She was also basically rule 63 Thomas Aquinas as a sorcerer. Its one thing to hate races of people for individual dislike, its quite another to have strong logical theological arguments for why they must be hated.

To be fair, Madoka was largely at the start of (a localized version of that) -- and Mami's death, as well as the two that come back to back much later, is treated with the proper gravity, it's not your attack on titan "more meat for the grinder" gore with no emotional gravitas... heck, Mami's death isn't actually that graphic, you can clearly tell what happened without a gratuitous blood fountain or anything like that. Given that the show is very much a struggle between despair and hope, the sharp contrast is well used.

That to say, yeah, it's not for everyone and fuck the trend towards full grimderp lately.

Not really super saiyan but whatever. The GM had a whole homebrew system and I went into it with the idea of making a traveling merchant doing merchant things and supporting the party; I didn't immediately realize how high-magic the setting was going to be. The players picked various schools of magic split (mostly) into elements; one of the schools I picked was light magic assuming I'd get primarily healing abilities.

I also got lasers. Mana-efficient, no cooldown lasers. Any combat encounter when I wasn't needed on support (usually because the thief fumbled and took near-fatal damage and I had to spend half the fight keeping him alive) I'd empty my mana into beamspamming. Outside of combat I was still the party jew so I guess it wasn't all wrong

Sadly, the GM rejected my wolf companion as soon as he realized what I was doing.

Ah no, no trainwreck here. Except the one time we accidentally poached an owlbear and ended up nuking the whole forest. That snowballed out of control very quickly. Well I can't remember a lot of them since its been a while, but usually she's call upon theological texts of the setting, precedent, certain Saint's opinions, as well as the common argument that the idea of a 'good' alien was impossible, and even if it wasn't the overwhelming majority are evil and its impractical to sort through trillions to find a single good egg.

She often got into heated debates with another PC who was a very rich gentleman from planet Not-Victorian England, because his racism was more Southern Aristocrat and hers was more full Nazi, so she'd get mad at him for treating aliens with respect [albeit subtly condescending, 'just good manners' respect] instead of pure contempt.

Made for the Hell's Rebels AP in Pathfinder. tl;dr version:


Started as a disgraced cleanfreak noblewoman who went sticking her nose where she shouldn't, accidentally exposing a state secret that threatened the legitimacy of the crown and got herself and her closest friend hunted by the thought police who made liberal use of scrying. After a year on the run they were cornered and she panicked and used a family heirloom to wish her friend reincarnated so that they'd have grown up and had a happier life elsewhere, rather than being hunted for the rest of his life.

She eventually ended up in Kintargo just as shit started to go south and got pulled into a ragtag group of dissidents. She is a bit of a cool-headed, stiff upper lip pragmatist and acted as a counterbalance to the more gung-ho members, so bit by bit she found herself in a leadership role cultivating a full-fledged rebellion that now threatens to spill into Cheliax proper and likely draw neighboring kingdoms in when the time is right, using the knowledge she got herself hunted for.

there were many skill rolls that were required. a strength roll had to be made to break through any 1x1 doorway a failed check broke the doorway with damage. if there was a set of stairs, and acrobatics check along with agility (which was very low for a bear) or suffer damage. while i had 5 INT and could understand common, the little goblin on my back could only lousily explain my characters words. stealth or any kind of charisma was virtually impossible. sure I was tanky, buy everyone tended to aggro to me.
