Today marks 73 years since the 'July 20 Bomb Plot', also known as Operation Valkyrie. This was an attempt by several senior Wehrmacht officers to assassinate Hitler at his Eastern Front headquarters known as the "Wolf's Lair", near Rastenburg in East Prussia (now Kętrzyn in Poland). The plot was not the first attempt to kill Hitler, but it was the one that came the closest to success.

The men behind the July Plot were a group of high-level German military leaders who recognized that Hitler was leading Germany in a suicidal war on two fronts. They decided to assassinate him then stage a coup d’état, with the belief that a new government in Berlin would save Germany from complete destruction at the hands of the Allies.

The July Plot leaders included Colonel General Ludwig Beck, former chief of the army general staff, Colonel General Friedrich Olbricht and Major General Henning von Tresckow. Lieutenant Colonel Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, chief of staff of the reserve army, also played a central role in the conspiracy. Stauffenberg had been badly wounded in North Africa, losing his right eye and right hand in a strafing attack. As Chief-of-Staff Army Reserve he was a familiar sight at the Wolf's Lair, with regular access to Hitler, and it was he who resolved to plant the bomb.

Stauffenberg received orders that the next staff conference was to be at 13.00 on July 20th. The start was changed to 12.30 – though the time change meant little to Stauffenberg. Having broken a capsule full of acid which would eat through a wire detonator thus activating a firing pin, Stauffenberg went into a map room with Field Marshall Keitel and placed the bomb, hidden in his briefcase, against a leg of the table that supported the war maps that Hitler was using. After this was done, Stauffenberg made his excuse (he had to take a telephone report from Berlin) and left the map room.

I know we all like to hate on it, but Bolt Action is fun.

He went to his staff car and as he got level to it, an explosion occurred in the map room. The time was 12.42. The SS guards believed that an air raid was taking place. Regardless of this, Stauffenberg bluffed his way out of the very heavily guarded Wolf’s Lair and by 13.15 was on his plane for the journey to Berlin.

Just before the bomb was due to explode, an officer attending the briefing had moved the briefcase to the other side of the table support chosen by Stauffenberg as the ideal place to put the bomb. Therefore, the blast was directed away from Hitler who survived with his clothes singed, a cut to his hand and damaged ear drums. In fact, at 16.00, less than four hours after the explosion, Hitler gave Mussolini a tour of the damage done to the map room.

The planned coup d’état in Berlin that was to follow the assassination was a disaster. It had clearly not been well thought out. The only leading Nazi in Berlin at the time was Joseph Goebbels. A major in the Guards Battalion, Otto Remer, was sent to arrest Goebbels by the conspirators directing the doomed uprising in the capital. Remer, in fact, was a dedicated Nazi and Goebbels put him in direct contact with Hitler to prove that the Führer was still alive. Promoted on the spot by Hitler to a colonel, Remer was charged by Hitler with rounding up the conspirators.

At 18.45 a radio broadcast stated that there had been an attempt on Hitler’s life but that it had failed and Hitler was alive. The radio broadcast then stated that Hitler would address the German people sometime in the evening.
>>
>>54411841
When the news came through that Hitler was alive, General Friedrich Fromm, commander of the reserve army and someone who condoned the July Plot, turned on the conspirators in order to have his association with them covered up. The conspirators, including Stauffenberg, based in the War Office were rounded up. They went through the farce of a drumhead court martial and were then shot by a firing squad. Tresckow walked into No-Man’s-Land on the Eastern Front and was shot by Russian machine gun fire. However, this was only the start of Hitler’s revenge. Hundreds of people thought to be involved in the conspiracy also soon were arrested, and around 200 eventually were executed.

On the surface, Operation Valkyrie doesn't seem like the kind of thing to make a wargame. But in fact, the complicated conspiracy and grand plans for a coup provide the basis for a fascinating tabletop scenario. SPI developed a board game that was famous for being pretty experimental and unusual for the time (and apparently very difficult to 'win'). The plot also has serious potential as a matrix game. As far as alternate WW2 scenarios go, this one could go all sorts of ways.

What tips are you looking for?

Are we referring to the damaged wall or the incredible Feldgrau man?

Also I just keep showing off my wall to everyone around cause I feel proud of making something for once.

I like what you've done with the posters and the bullet holes.

The rubble looks too even in terms of size, I think you'd be better off varying the size of the pieces more.

Would loook great as part of a larger set though.
>>
>>54413923
I want to make a tableful of "germany in ruins" pieces for first set. I'll try to get bigger pieces of rubble, was also thinking of adding bit of sand to the paint to make it a bit "dusty".
>>
>>54413539
The rubble around the base is too consistently sized and too big to look convincing, you should mix it in with some finer grit and maybe even the occasional large piece of rubble.

The colour choice seems off, too dark. It seems too dark to be concrete and doesn't really resemble any other type of building material, so maybe consider using a slightly lighter tone, or giving the whole thing a heavy dry brush with a lighter grey/beige.

If you want more texture don't mix sand with paint, just get some grout or plaster and cover the piece in a thin layer of the stuff. It give a much more pleasant effect and is far less likely to crumble off under any touch.

Lastly you should really add architectural elements like doors and windows before doohickeys like posters (although the posters are a really nice touch). Currently I don't have a clue what this wall once was. Was it part of a bunker? Was it a civilian building? The workman posters suggest some kind of industrial building, but I really couldn't say for sure.

Still, this is a neat proof of concept piece, and as you make more and refine the style you should end up with some really nice pieces.

The guys at the club always have instant coffee with cream, and while that's not really my thing - certainly coffee is my wargaming fuel - just black with no sugar and done in a plunger/french press

>>54413539
The posters are a nice touch, the rubble and the wall need a drybrush of a lighter grey though - they look a bit uniform. Wouldn't hurt to trow some random rubble bits like some random left over bits of a sprue in the rubble. Make it look like more than just some random rocks. Even some bits of wire or something would help

The new Operational Art of War (4 I think?) is coming out soonish. That should be pretty grogtacular.

Pic related is from 3 but you get the idea.
>>
>>54421316
Is it like ATG at all? And how soon?
>>
>>54421356
It's in beta right now so actually it may not be as soon as I thought. However they did do a big patch for TOAoW3 when they announced 4 (4 was originally intended to be an update for 3 but spun off into a full-blown sequel).

It's a bit more 'meaty' than ATG I'd say but follows the same general principles. It's also very focused on big battles (hence 'Operational'). Generally you're going to be in charge of at least a Battalion.

I just found an AAR by one of the beta testers on Matrix's forum, might be of use to you.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4303714 - Part 1
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4312736 - Part 2

In the meantime if you want something to play I'd recommend WinSPMBT and Open General because they're both free.
>>
>>54421446
Not him but whatbis ATG and USB toaow3 worth playing still?
>>
>>54421831
ATG = Advanced Tactics Gold, it's a fun, lightish and kinda sandboxy hex-and-chit wargame.

I'd say 3 is definitely still worth playing, what with the recent(ish) update and the amount of community-created scenarios and the like.

think creatively to turn garbage into industrial wreckage. Cutting up drinking straws for pipes and either buying corrugated plasticard or scraping the paper off one side of corrugated cardboard to simulate corrugated aluminum plates are good places to start. You can also use small-diameter plumbing pvc or copper pipes and fitting for certain types of drainage outflows, smoke stacks, etc. Watch "enemy at the gates" and take notes on the terrain (inb4 muh human wave, w/e the sets are still useful)

No worries bud for Stalingrad I'd suggest cardboard boxes with the top and bottom cut off then windows and chunks taken out of the four sides if you want it basic, incendiary bombs gut buildings and leave the shell so four sheets of card glued and smeared with rubble then given a coat of grey then black paint make great foundations. Also this

I can recommend Shako. Its pretty simple and effectively conveys Napoleonic period imo

Black Powder is supposed to be quite good, as is Blucher.

Models depend on the scale you want to go for. 1/72 has good detail vs variety vs cheapness, but its quite a large for napoleonics (although still fine as long as you can imagine the 8 guys on your base represent more like 200)
15mm is good, 10mm is good, 6mm is good. Decide on a scale or see what people around you are playing - head to local wargames clubs and see what kind of napoleonics rules and miniatures they're using.

Pic related I think is 6mm

28mm is also good if you want to do more skirmish sized games. Rule sets like Sharpe Practice might be more suitable for that kind of game.
I think pic related are 28mm, but they could just be really well painted 20mm/1/72

An amazing movie, hopefully most of /hwg/ has seen it, and it's a must-watch if you were gaming partisans. But the other anon was looking for inspiration for Stalingrad scenery. Personallu I think they could watch both Enemy at the Gates AND the 1993 German Stalingrad movie - even the really cheesy 2013 Russian one too. So, I need some advice for 6mm owners.

I have quite a lot of guys, and I am looking for a foam travel case. Anybody know of any travel case companies that make foam for 60x30mm bases?
>>
>>54440754
You might have to make your own, get some foam and cut out the sizes you need.
I have a bunch of 6mm stuff and I just transport it in one of those multi drawer plastic towers. As long as you don't tip them over there isn't a problem, but not ideal for transport - especially helicopters or aircraft.

Question for the knowledgeable about you (or someone who can point me to good books about it):

What flag(s) would a 17th century ship fly, and where would these flags be?
I've understood it to be a large ensign/national flag at the rear, something similar on top of the main mast, possibly a smallish one (jack?) on the bowsprit, but what about other masts? Would they have any flags, or would they be left without?
>>
>>54442374
If you are looking for dutch ships you are in luck. Just look up some paintings from that period. Every dutch painting from back then had at least one ship on it.

My technique is pretty simple. First I paint the camo area green. Then I paint larger shapes with the brown. After that I paint on lines, mostly separating the brown and green, with a bone color. Then I use a brown wash to darken the colors/shade recesses over the whole thing. Finally, I go over the green parts again with the original color.

So I've been collecting 28mm WW2 Germans for a little while now (mostly Warlord) but have my first game (Bolt Action 2nd Ed) on Sunday, it's 1000pts max.

The list I've got so far is 4 Veteran Grenadiers squads (9+1 NCO), Medium Mortar, Medic, Panzerschreck Team, Air forward observer and a Panzer IV Ausf.F (light howitzer verison).

Is there any "must-takes" I'm missing here or anything a bit cheesy I can fit into 1000 points. It's a friendly game so no issues with being "that guy"

Make at least one of the veteran squads equipped with a lot of assault rifles so they can wipe enemy squads off objectives in assault. It's historically accurate too because the Germans would utilize assault squads that had all stgs except for one guy with a kar98k (so they could use rifle grenades).

You probably want some armor because it's good to have units immune to small arms fire. Panzer IV is a good choice. Plus a light howitzer is good for pinning squads quickly when you need to.

It uses multi-based figure stands just like IABSM or FOW. 1 stand=1 squad. 1 miniature vehicle=1 vehicle.

The Pilum: The Roman Heavy Javelin (Osprey Weapon 55)

A heavy javelin, normally used as a shock weapon immediately before contact, the pilum was designed with a particular speciality: it could penetrate a shield and carry on into the individual behind it. Relying on mass rather than velocity, at short range a volley of pila had much the same effect on a charging enemy as musketry would in later periods. The design was not uniform, with a wide diversity of types throughout the developmental history of the weapon, but for more than four centuries it remained a vital part of the arsenal of weapons at the disposal of the Roman legionary. Drawing upon recent major finds in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkans, as well as written records and rigorous scientific analysis, this enthralling study lifts the veil on the evolving nature of the pilum, the Roman heavy javelin that helped to conquer the known world.

Tippecanoe 1811: The Prophet’s Battle (Osprey Campaign 287)

This is the gripping story of the Tippecanoe campaign of 1811: ‘The prophet's battle'. It was a conflict born out of festering tensions inscribed by the 1795 Treaty of Greeneville, which had concluded the Northwestern Indian War and attempted to prevent white settlers' encroaching onto newly defined Indian territories. For 16 years there had been peace, but in 1811 the number of settlers in the Ohio territory had swollen from 3,000 to 250,000. War was again coming to the North West. Within these pages John F. Winkler explores the dramatic build up to the conflict as ‘The Prophet' Tenskatawa and his brother Tecumseh rallied the tribes to drive back the American settlers once and for all. Through superb illustrations and maps, Winkler provides a clear view of the intense fighting that followed at Tippecanoe and the true impact that it would come to have on the War of 1812.

Lots of people replace command and colours blocks with miniatures.
>>
>>54476861
Why? One of the reasons to use blocks in wargames is to hide information.
>>
>>54477802
Because in C&C you don't hide information.
>>
>>54477802
Yes ONE of the reasons you could use blocks is to hide information.

Another is because they are a slightly nicer aesthetic than chits, or that you want something to have more than 1 "flip side" (by rotating it through it's four sides to show loss of unit strength etc.)

Just because some games use blocks for hidden information doesn't mean they all do!

C&C works well with blocks as they look more like rank and file (at least to me). Memoir '44 looks better with minis. both approaches work with the aesthetic of the system and era.

Columbia Games and more recently Vento Nuovo whole shtick is a huge element of Fog of War, so the blocks work for those systems and scales.

Why I still ASL so expensive and always out of print
>>
>>54483310
Most hex and counter games printed nowadays do tend to run pretty expensively...and pound for pound what you get in each ASL product you are paying roughly what all other hex and counter games run-maybe a touch higher. Its just that ASL has a TON of stuff in each product.

the problem of WHY they are always out of product? Low manufacturing runs anymore. MMP and really most any other gaming company only do a print run of about 5000 copies of each game. it really does cost a lot of money to publish these games and game companies are not getting rich off of their products. I know Kurt Schilling over at MMP lost money in MMP the first 10 years it was around. Only his own personal finances kept the company going. So game companies dont like to invest too much money into production as they know if a game wont sell and they have to much stock left over it could ruin a company.

There really are less hex and counter gamers out there than there used to be. its not like in the 70s and 80 a single game run would have a print run of over 50k units-and would sell them out and then do more print runs.. even a 'high risk' game would see an initial print run of 30K or more.

the other problem with ASL stuff being out of print are the fucking assholes that decide to buy 4 or 5 copies of anything that comes out-hold onto them for a few years and then dump them for grossly exaggerated prices.

Depends on the scale of combat you want to go for, for larger battles in WW1 you could try Westfront or Over the Top or a game simply called "World War One Wargame Rules".
There is also kallistra's "Raging Empires" which is available on their site for free and is designed for very large scale battles on a large hex-ed up table.
For smaller skirmish games Through the Mud and Blood might suit

For 30 Years war you could try Hakaa Paale for the Ga Pa system.
Lion of the north is very short and succinct, but would probably get the job done. I wrote a TYW system too (pdf related) which is quite a lot of fun and done simply. Quite an old game of mine (from 2013) but pretty effective at capturing the feeling of the period with minimal rules.

>>54491640
I think smaller scale skirmishes would work best, focusing on each player controlling a couple of squadrons or platoons in a larger offensive. I'll check out the rules you mentioned as well.

Skirmish games would be each player controlling a single man, or a group of 4 or 5 men.
If you want each player commanding a a few platoons, you probably want a larger scale system rather than a skirmish one.
There is also Big Bloody Battles (BBB), a Flames of War WW1 game, and an unofficial version of Bolt Action for WW1

Vallejo Dark Sand (847) could work for all of them.

If you want to do Caunter scheme on the british, I'd go with a base of Vallejo Pale Sand (837) or Deck Tan (986), and then use Green Grey (886) and German Fieldgrey (830).

For the germans, most brownish yellows are good, instead of Dark Sand, one could use Desert Yellow (977) or German Camo Orange Ochre (824) (or several others, but those are the ones I had on hand)

WW1 doesn't really suit skirmish. All the good games have at least 1 man = 50 men, or infantry in stands or teams.
Its a period where a single man doesn't really mean dick, but an entire division, with the help of various support (either by heavy weapon teams, artillery or specialist teams like miners or stromtrooper squads) can make a difference.
Its fine to do skirmish if you want to do a more RPG style WW1 experience, or want to play out the actions of a single stormtrooper squad in the midst of a battle, but the incredibly large numbers of men involved in any decent action seems to makes skirmish games grind to a halt.
A recent AAR of a warhammer great war game complained about everything taking too long. When you have to roll to hit, wound, save for every man, and there are 50 to 100 men on the table, things can begin to take a long time.

Someone should really make a lightweight game for those who want to skirmish but find their games are taking too long.

So I'm building a VBCW force of Anglicans decked out in French horizon blue surplus, but I was wondering if such a force would still be usable in a WW2 game, as some second line or other such reservist unit? Or was the blue just completely gone from the French army by then?

So I want to do a SCW game, but I want it to have a pulpy cinematic feel to it, rather than being strictly historical. Are there any campaign systems that revolve around a small group of veterans that would be suitable for the 1930s? Even something like simplifying the hit/wound/save rolls down to a single roll of 4+ to kill. perhaps -1 to the roll for light cover, -2 for heavy cover like a trench. +1 for large guns or grenades, +2 for heavy howitzers.
Let MGs target up to 10 guys within 12" of each other and you should be looking good. You could probably use the Warhammer or BA rules but with those additions and it would speed things up a lot.

Ive thought about doing ASL demonstrations via VASL. But then I remember I suck at the ASL rules and at best would be able to cover basic stuff for people. I make a poor teacher when it comes to games rules. Even when I was doing FoW-and was the rules 'go to' guy in our group...I still had to hit the rule book on a regular basis.

and as far as AARs? they really do take a lot to do. And recently-injuries i sustained in the first gulf war have gotten worse and i tend to spend most days in some degrees of pain. And that tends to exhaust me. I dont get out as many of my videos for my gaming channel as I would like and doing an AAR on top of that takes more energy than I have most days.

I was going to do an AAR on 'Britan Stands Alone' but it requires more table space than I have and there is no VASSAL mod for it. It may still happen when I go house sitting for my folks later this summer.

But I will work on trying to get an AAR out of here soon. Im actually thinking of revisiting one of the Fleet games. 6th or 2nd. Do that via Vassal and do an AAR for it.

OK boys and girls. Story time. I will preface this by saying I was US NAvy Serving as a weapons expert (Gunner Mate Guns) aboard the USS Curts FF_38. Planeguard for the USS Midway Battlegroup and the only ship of the Coalition forces to engage in a naval gun fire exchange with a ship of the Iraqi Navy

technically I was injured twice. The first one was a stupid bullshit injury, Sipped going down a ladderback and fucked up my knee. Partial tear of the meniscus in my right knee. Fortunately, I was young and with some rest and ice, I was able to bounce back from it with little difficulty. Pushed through a lot of pain as I did keep the injury hidden from the docs but my supervisor found out and he agreed not to say anything as long as it started to get better. Hell we were undermanned and he couldn't afford to lose me.

the 2nd 'injury' and the one that would eventually get me discharged from the service was getting hit with 'gulf war syndrome'. I didnt get hit with that one until a few years later when I tried to get back to Japan. Had to do a full physical and they caught it. 'Minor Upper respiratory, bronchial asthmatic-like tendencies, aggravated due to Gulf War Syndrom". Try saying that 5 times fast. This was in '95 when that ass Clinton was seriously downsizing the military and was using medical boards to look for ANY excuse to discharge people. So..out I went.

About 5 years ago I injured my knee again and it fully tore the meniscus. So I walk with a limp pretty much all the time now (and there is always a level of pain associated with it) and that in turn fucks with the muscles in my feet setting off my Plantar Fasciitis. So on occasion, my knee with flare up bad causing me to limp more than usual and in turn set off the bad pain in my feet. That takes about 5-6 days to go away. The worst my knee gets is it will swell up and I cant even bend it leaving me in excruciating pain for about a month. fortunately, thats only happened 3 times since I reinjured myself. VA isnt doing much for me. So I just have to deal with it.

VA has given me steroid shots in the past for it-and that does help it-for about 4 months. the problem is steroid shots lose their effectiveness so I havnt had on in about a couple years now.

>>54541840

I'm not familiar with bacchus at all. Should be fine - 6mm is a good scale for WW1. The details dont matter so much at that scale so don't worry too much about it - my advice would be to go for cheap price rather than quality, as no one is going to know if the minis are a bit shoddy, especially if you do a decent paint job.
I have some H&R infantry (pic) that are essentially blobs of blobs with a gun and a helmet, but with a good paint job everyone compliments them, and no one has a magnifying glass to really see what's going on...

Well, I got blocked from TMP for calling out Bill over his bullshit.

I'm not even angry, I'm impressed how much of a delusional cunt he is.
