Poker Thread? Brags, beats, variance. How are you running?

Literally never played Poker before. It's very intimidating, since the only people who seem to play have been playing for awhile. I'd hate to just try and learn with people that good, you know?
Plus I don't necessarily understand the appeal (but I know that I haven't played it and thus shouldn't. I bet it's fun if you're getting into it.)

I totally get you. The thing with poker is that it doesn't feel like there is a casual poker scene, aside from home games. Because there's always money on the line, so that brings competitive people. The alternative is play money, which just feels pointless. The appeal of poker is reading your opponent, outsmarting them, and making fat cash and having a great time while it's happening. That spirit of competition is what makes it fun imo, but I've always played competitive card games, so maybe I just have a bug for it.

Also, if you have any passing interest, try watching some videos or reading a book about poker. Super interesting stuff, hooked me right away when I started.

I made 1200 bucks before lunch so that's a good reason to play poker.
OP, I think you have a good idea, but poker might be too specific, especially for this board.
Why not make a Gambling General?
I've been meaning to get better at poker since the casinos are getting faster to catch card counters, but they dont care about you rolling the other schmucks in poker. Just haven't put in the time to practice.

I'll tell you a true story:
Like the third or fourth time in my life I played poker (for money), I walked in there like a hotshot, and pretended I was really good at the game. I got a little bit of early luck, and these veteran poker players were terrified of me, and I was playing them like chumps. I eventually started fucking up and just walked out while I was ahead, but I made a good haul.
Next time I played, I played with friends and got wrecked, because they knew I was a noob.
If you can intimidate the other players, you've already won. If you get intimidated, they won.

P.S. Never let them know you're new

Zawa zawa

Exception: If you're a fucking pro, tell them you're new.

Very true. I'll see how this does for today.
