Coming back into 40k after a few editions away, and looking to bulk out my CSM force. Are pic related a good choice? I mean they look fragile for their point cost, but on the other hand they can easily cross the table turn one and get in the enemy lines while the rest of my army moves up to set up a turn two alpha strike.
Anyone played these bad boys this edition? Any stories to tell? Thoughts on my strategy?

Anyone have anything at all to say about Heldrakes?
My buddy plays CSM and his Heldrake seems solid. As you say he runs it up the board turn one and charges something shooty.
As I see it however it needs support to really get the job done as the unit it charges can fall back leaving it open to getting destroyed. This just means your army needs to make use of the space and time it opens up for you.
So it really depends on what you're running Anon but if you like the model then I dont think you'll be disappointed.

There's a general for this.

It gets killed by Orks with flame throwers, anon.
The biggest jobbers in the csm army atm. They look menacing and people have bad memories of their terror but this editon they just shit the bed and do next to nothing.

That picture us metal as fuck but the actual model is so strange

They look like they'd be effective line breakers though.
I've used them several times since 8th. It just seems to run up the board, torch something and get 2 or 3 kills, then charge a tank to do a wound and die the next turn.
I don't see them as worth the points anymore

Thanks to their look and the terror they ware when they came out for the first time, they are fairly good distractions.
Only good if you have a sudden assault oriented army. Charge him through the middle of enemy ranks the moment you Terminators deep strike and Raptors and Warp Talons jump in, and often you can be sure it will attract a lot of unnecessary firepower. And every shot fired at it allows your close combat specialists to advance.

They're decent. The flamer is good, they're fast, don't have minimum movement and are alright at combat.
The Heldrake is there to assassinate characters. You move in so said character is the "closest target", and flame it, saving a CP to reroll the number of hits.
In a pinch, you could use it to eat Overwatch for your other dudes, as well as fuck up large units. Remember, the enemy must remain in coherency even when it piles in.
Of course, that would only matter for punishing a (former) congaline.

But almost all characters are surrounded by a buffer of grunts without space for a Heldrake, and those few that aren't will be the second time.
