Thanks, anon, I kind of feel like an idiot being spoon fed that review since it's the first review to come up on Google but it's definitely helpful. The idea of the parts kits can be helpful, although it might be better to hold out and abide by the buy once, cry once idea instead.

That being said, any felliw german/austrianfags here? What do you use for stripping paint? I want to redo my Necrons, but just painting over the previous layers, thin as they may be, seems wrong.
Also, how's a metallic blue for Necrons, kinda like pic related? I can use other colours to mix up too, but blue is the one I currently have at home.

I finally have the pieces I made for some Dawn of War-esque terrain. Here's the Plasma Generator pieces. I'm surprised, they came out really well. All that needs to be done here is cut the acrylic rod and everything will fit together flawlessly. I don't even need to sand anything down really. The bottom two are translucent because they are internal supports for the "floating" side panels.

And here's the pieces for the Path to Enlightenment. I made everything but the round piece in back and the tubes, which are actually legos. There's a fire warrior in there for scale. These I have a big piece of 5mm plywood for that I need to cut a base out of. Looks like it takes up a 7"x7" area.

I really look forward to painting it

Just picked one of these guys up today. I want to use him as a conversion for my death guard, but I'm not what he's going to end up being until I can look at an actual codex. I'm thinking Lord or preferably lieutenant equivalent if thhey exist.

Any general tips on how to make someone like this look more 40k besides just slapping a gun at his hip?

Well, just make sure to distinguish the green and orange/yellow/tan bits, or they will be overwhelmed by the green

>>
>>54398417
The mellerud stuff isn't gonna do anything to the plastic.
At least not in my experience.
I usually left my minis to soak for 24 hours before giving them a scrub and then repeating the process for the ones that were caked in primer or something like that.

It works, but you'll need to do a lot of scrubbing. As I said, it's not great.

A dark green could reasonably work and contrast enough with the other colours, if they're a bit brighter.

You can do a lot of different chapters with the same pads, just different colors.

83 is either Imperial Fists and Crimson Fists
92 Is Black Consuls, White Consuls and the new Mentors badge too.
93 Is Nova Marines, and while the halo of the Sons of Medusa only has 8 points and not 12 it's a fairly minor detail or easy to convert in any case.
85 Space Wolves and I believe either Shadow or Iron Wolves. Red badge on dark grey shield.
88 Ravenwing and Hawk Lords.
94 Minotaurs, Brazen Minoturs, White Minotaurs and Tauran
97 I think aside from Black Templars there are also White Templars. Should look that up, would be surprised if the badge hadn't been recycled though.
98 Forgot the name, the red and blue quartered guys and the orange chaper (Knights of Gryphonne?) use this.

That's already almost 20 different chapters without even using all the pads.

1st tell those guys to eat a dick. Then tell them how can run an auxillary squad that's an elite choice, though at -1 CP (bummer, but worth it to me because FUN), that can be from whatever faction you want because it's a seperate detachment. It's still battleforged because you have your main detachment, probably a battalion, and then the elite choice is a different detachment.

Or, you can run the vangaurd detachment, like I am going to when I finish my counts as vindicare, callidus and cypher models, alongside another detachment.

Stick some more armour on his other arm. Give him a backback.

Maybe glue some plasticard or something in the neck area to look like the gorget of his armour poking out from the flesh that grew around it.

Stick a plagued up version of a servoskull or a cyber cherub or something on his base with him.

Give his ax a power supply or a chain edge or something.

How shit a conversion idea is this, I've been mulling it over a while.

Get the cheapo Chadmarine Scouts, swap their heads for cybered to fuck ones, replace their space deagles and knives with pile bunkers and some kind of huge mining laser type gun arm and swap the backpacks for more arcane looking ones.

Then add mechanical gubbins like callipers/pistons on the legs, hoses, pipes and canisters of glowing liquid, and paint them suitably construction vehicle style as "Demolition Servitors" (counts as Kataphron Breachers).

Just finished my scouts. Overall I think I did well for my ability level, but I've also got some gripes:
I didn't base coat white for the faces on the black haired guys and that makes their faces look especially awful.
The eyes got out of hand in some places.
I was sloppy with some of the smaller details that're really hard to fix. I don't know if they're worth going back for though.
I painted each color on the whole model at once instead of doing it based ok the needs of each part and as a result there's some gray hiding in the cracks.
Non-gripes:
I think the fatigues turned out well. I kinda like this crap brown that I made.
I'm happy with my posing and the bits.
On the brown haired guys I tried the angled brush technique for highlighting and I think it turned out pretty well.

Hello gents, looking for advice:
I've started building my kharadron overlords ships and I've been thinking about their base, so my idea is to have some sorta snowy mountains peaks coming out from the clouds below.

I was firmly in the "why would you want that?" camp until last weekend when I saw two Space Marine models in a side-by-side comparison. Both had been based with Leadbelcher, but one had been shaded with the glossy Nuln Oil, and one had the regular version. They both work, but it's an entirely different effect that I never thought I could possibly like.
>>
>>54404327

Not too bad mate.

What I'd personally recommend is going them over again, and tidying up stuff like the pouches and the eyes and mouths. I'd probably give them a gentle wash too, that helps hide paint overlap in the crevices and gives depth.

Funnily some of your edge highlights are pretty good, it's almost like you're running before you can walk.
>>

Honestly I'm going to blame the sloppiness on the scout models. While with marines you can just base coat everything one color and then do details, on scouts you have to base coat with like four different colors in close proximity to each other so it's easy to run one onto the other.

I'll try cleaning up a bit and then see how things go.

To be honest you're not gonna be able to make high detailed minis with a 3D printer off the shelf at the moment. But if you've got the money and the technical skills then why not make some cool scenery? I think it's pretty slick. Still requires skill to assemble and paint and make it look good.

wip Primaris Deathwatch squad

A week ago I said to 40kg that dubs would decide my Manlet chaplains chapter. The winner chose pink-purple and homebrew chapter. so voila!

Also the idea with the Black Templar was to put a ork icon that translates as death to orks on his shoulder shield. He's the least finished of the 3.

I'm doing a carcharadon Reiver next, and a Son of Antaeus in Gravis armour ( but he's a normie bolter bitch so it'll be a conversion)

I've been putting off painting my primaris until I had a good color scheme, and in my mild excitement for Destiny 2 I thought of using the Sunsetting sharer (pic related).

How would I go about getting that deep shiny orange? Base of silver/bronze with orange over that and then the yellow glaze?

What third color would go well with black and orange for small details?

New SM roll table.png

Decided to redo the nice table an anon did for us quite some time ago, putting the chapter in a certain logical order, the Founding Legions in each line at first, in their order, then Successors in the same line.

Salamanders and Space Wolves are going to be a pain in the ass for my (tiny) autism, as I'll be forced to put in non-succesors chapters to fill in the voids, something I wanted to do only at the end of the table. Anyhoo.

Will take some time since I do everything by hand, not exactly the most tech savy person, and I want roughly the same kind of image for each chapter, with the exception of FW-typed ones and sometimes the B&C ones when I don't have any other choice.

Will post when I'm done, hopefully tomorrow, if not, the day after.

Primaris Johnny anon from last night here

I've given some more thought about my Johnny and its base. While the classic Goblin Green and some flocking was planned, shouldn't a new Johnny get a new base? I'm trying to think of a base that sets it apart as its own thing but harkens back of Johnnies of old. Any ideas?

I'd mainly just feel bad putting my first real conversion on such a plain base but it feels right thematically as well
>>

desu i'd be more inclined to recreate johnny's squinty eye thing with some sort of battle damage to his eyelens/socket & do everything with a modern style. If I could be arsed, which I can't.

>While the classic Goblin Green and some flocking was planned, shouldn't a new Johnny get a new base?

The only Johnny in the collage that actually has something resembling an old-style base is the original Blood Angel one, which just green with flock glued on - not Goblin Green painted over sand and drybrushed with a yellow-green mixture, which is how a lot of those old 2nd Edition bases were done.

All of the other Johnnies in the collage have a different style of base, so yeah, why shouldn't yours get a new base too?

The modern version of goblin green bases would be steel legion drab around the rim and either stirland mud with multiple patches of green flock, or astrogranite and whatever wash/drybrush 'Eavy Metal does for urban bases. I think they might actually use grey for astrogranite bases but steel legion drab is basically the current goblin green for base rims.

Fire warriors. Still a lot to do, but Ive got a question.

How do you guys tackle the recesses in their armour for example? Do you paint a line in them or do them by shading and then layering everything besides the recesses?

That will work, I suppose, but you're going to want one that has a handle that turns, like the tool in the middle here. I have another one with collettes on both ends (the bottom tool), and it starts digging into the palm of your hand pretty quickly.

That being said, you can get some pretty useful stuff at Michaels. If you're passing by and have ten minutes to spare, go in there with a 40%-off coupon pulled up on your smartphone and buy yourself a decent brush for a few dollars. Do this often enough, and pretty soon you'll have a sizeable collection of half-decent brushes of various sizes for not a lot of money.

The 99-cent brushes, though? Are they the cheap-o (I ask because Artists Loft also makes some higher-end brushes) Artist's Loft ones? They're not much good for anything besides mixing paint, transferring paint from pot to pallet, and maybe drybrishing, since you shouldn't mind ruining them.
>>
>>54408434
What people like to do is you wash the whole model in the nuln oil/agrax earthshade and then use another layer of a lighter paint you used earlier to clean up the whole thin except recesses.
