My setting has Jungle Beat take place towards the end of the DK tineline, sometime after DKCR2. I imagine he united the kong tribes of the island, becoming it's first king an establishing Kong Island as an official state, King Mario being the first to recognize him as such.

DK was hesitant at first, considering his history with Mario, but recognized ghe need to be diplomatic, even with old adversaries.

The Kongs are the biggest exporters of fruit across the region, but often come into conflict with varioud pirate guilds, most notably those of Kaptain K. Rool.

Not sure if I want him to be diplomatic or on hostile terms with Lord Frederik, who's the High King of Sherbet Land in my setting.

This is actually a pretty interesting project. I can't see a lot of heavy intrigue campaigns, but it's campy enough to be fun, unless you're going for a sort of reimagined world where the actual logistics of a place such as the Mushroom Kingdom are put into focus.

The world lends itself well to very generic "attack goomba/koopa/etc. because they're bad" types of murderhobo adventures, but some attention can easily be placed on locations within the world. Probably not the best word to use for such a thing, but I mean to imply that a sense of unexplored world depth that unravels across a campaign usually adds to the roleplay experience. By adding to the world, you can ad lib some new factions within the Mushroom/Koopa Kingdoms. Taking the world at face value leaves room for exploration, but you can get more from the pre-existing scenario by putting attention on characters with previously smaller roles and expanding on them.

>Thwomps (alternate designation: Dossun) are real blockheads. Literally, they're a block of very dense and tough rock with a face on the front. I could see it working with a natural weapon attack tied into movement (dropping at the end of levitation) with the inability to equip most items. That's fair. More humanoid races are going to be the focus of the rule, of course.

Thwomps would likely have the ability to occupy the same space as another individual while levitating, but on drop they push the unit sharing their space back by 1 space opposite the direction they moved. (ie, if the Thwomp moved forwards, the enemy moves that same direction.) When moving they levitate and have a forced attack on landing.

World Name
Think up a name for the world.

Shape of the World
Decide the physical shape of the world. It’s okay to leave it unclear or even “unknown”.

World History
Record in brief the major events that have occurred in this world.

Ex: No one knows what lies on the other side of the great wall at the edge of the world; it is said that there are 88 secret treasures hidden in the world; etc.

Town Name:
pretty obvious
Population
Choose: Village (50-500 people), Town (500-5,000 people), City (5,000-20,000
people), or Large City (more than 20,000 people).

Ruler or Representative
Choose a system of government. There are two basic systems of rule:
Aristocracies, ruled by a king or ruling family, and Democracies, run by a ruling
party or group of elders. Also, jot down the name and personality of the head
of the ruling party. Of course, you’re also free to select a more complicated
government.

Environment
Note the terrain or environment where the town stands. For example, “a town
deep in a wispy wood”, “a city deep in a windy valley”, etc.

Representative Building
Think up a building, and some features (colors, descriptions) that are
representative of the town. For example, “a white castle atop a sharp cliff”,
“a giant windmill in the center of town”, etc.

Specialty Goods
Consider what goods or specialty products the town produces or is known
for. Products include things like sheep, bricks, ore, wood, or wheat, while
‘specialties’ might be things like wooden toys, mandarin oranges, or having
an unusually large number of skilled chefs.

Town’s Sight/Sound/Smell
Think about what sort of sensory impression a traveler might get from this
town. For example, “White painted walls and orange roofs, the smell of bread
baking, and the babble of the nearby stream”

Town’s Threats
Lastly, come up with a problem that is currently threatening the town. Some
examples might be a specific type of monsters, a bandit group, or a drought.
If monsters, it might be fun to come up with some new ones that don’t appear
in the monster list.

I haven't had a chance to play it myself yet, but it should work really well with this. to use paper mario as an example, all the fun things, exploration and dialogue between battles are the main focus while combat takes a back seat. combat itself fits with the mario rpgs as well, with a front and back zone for the combat. Roll20 did a good intro video on it. i'll see if i can find or make you guys a drop for the PDF.

one of the weird and interesting ideas is that theres a GM PC that acts as a guide and protector, and it doesn't always stay the same. throws you off a bit, but i could see similar mechanics working.

That's standard point buy. Characters start with 3 in everything, apply race modifiers, and can invest 7 stat points as they see fit. Example LeBron uses the standard 7 point system and the race modifier for humans is 1 point in any stat. HP is overall Heart + Toughness and FP is overall Heart + Coolness.
