You're an idiot who doesn't know how guns work.

You don't shoot to wound, if you pull the trigger you do so with the intent to kill whatever you are aiming at, and people don't always just instantly die on the first hit like in the movies so you are instructed to shoot them multiple times until you are sure.
This goes double for people who might be hopped up on something that lets them ignore the pain and shock of bullet wounds for longer.

If you get all up in the face of a cop who is ordering you to stand-down while pretending to have a gun and then explicitly act like you are whipping it out while he has you covered you deserve everything you get.
Being a drug addict isn't a sympathetic reason.

>>
>>54384951
>You don't shoot to wound
But why not? What is the fatality rate for a single gunshot wound? Unless it's really high, I find a policy of "always shoot to kill" hard to justify.
>>
>>54384321
>Theater of the Mind
>>
>>54385078
I find it easy to justify. A wounded, armed suspect can easily shoot you back; and they may not be happy with stopping at one bullet.
>>
>>54384951
You don't understand the thing of it was a druggie, any shot in the chest area (Where cops and every other person trained with firearm are trained to shoot) is fatal.

One shot is good enough to bring pretty much anyone down
>>
>>54385078
You're an idiot.
There's no such thing as a "safe" place to shoot someone. You aim for the center of mass to bring them down as quickly and safely(to yourself) as possible.
>>
>>54385078
You can't just 'wing' someone and hope for the best, even a shot to the leg or the arm can cause someone to rapidly bleed out... but not so rapidly that they can't get off a shot at you or other people around them.

If you have every reason to believe an aggressor is armed to the point you are shooting them you have to go all-in since your goal is to kill them before they kill you or others.

The time of "restraint" comes before you have pulled the trigger at all where you must use your best judgement.
>>
>>54385078
It's not a policy, it's a fact. You can't pull punches with a firearm. If you are shooting at someone, you have a very significant chance of killing them. Teaching someone to shoot at a person they don't want dead is retarded.
>>
>>54385157
OK, so there is grounds for an exception:

>"Shoot to kill if the target has a gun."

Again, why is that the general rule? Why aim to kill people with knives, or just their fists?

>>54385170
Give me statistics. Prove that there is no "safe" place to shoot. I already asked for the data.
>>
>>54384637
>people defending the stupid moron that got killed for being a stupid moron

>>
>>54385186
Because knives are lethal weapons to, you fucking imbecile. Fists or any other weapon can knock you down, out or incapacitate you and the perp won't have any reason to stop after one stab or punch.
The officer has to protect themselves from anyone coming at them with hostile intent because if they don't, they will very likely end up dead themselves.
Just fuck off.
>>
>>54385167
Cops are trained when opening fire on an armed suspect to make sure the target is dead to minimize risk to themselves and the public. That means following up the first shot to make sure the armed suspect is neutralized.
Its not like their health bar floating above their head vanishes to tell you they have died in real life.

I must try to save it!
>>
>>54385219
What the fuck is wrong with you? Watch your tone, asshole. Didn't your parents teach you manners?
>>
>>54385078
It's high enough that a shoot-to-wound policy would create an unnecessary further risk to suspect's lives. Lowering the criteria for when firearms are acceptable from "I believe my life is in danger" to "I needed to disable the suspect without personal risk" means more people get shot in more situations. There is no such thing as a non-lethal gunshot wound. There are only shots that kill quickly or slowly. In some cases you can get the victim medical attention before the slow one kills them. That does not mean the injury was non-lethal in itself.
>>
>>54385186
Why are you moving the goalposts?
In this case it was a person pretending to have a gun even as the cop backed up and repeatedly ordered him to stop, only opening fire when the idiot pretended to whip out the gun he had behind his back on the cop.
>>
>>54385187

>Cops are trained when opening fire on an armed suspect to make sure the target is dead to minimize risk to themselves and the public
That is a problem as there is situations in which the "armed" suspect, isn't armed and you gun downed a nobody holding anything. I'm talking about nobodies who actually don't pretend they have a dangerous weapon or alerted the authorities of them having firearms and get shot down.

There should be a confirmation policy in place.
>>
Fun fact: the officer in that webm was reprimanded... For being too lenient. He was supposed to shoot the moment he hand went behind his back. By pausing to give him the opportunity to back down, the cop turned the situation in a contest of reflexes and unnecessarily endangered himself.
>>
Fun fact: you are more likely to survive a non-instantly fatal gunshot than you are to survive a non-instantly fatal stabbing.
>>
>>54385280
Holy shit, I knew roughly that those adverts were all done in one shot but seeing how exactly they do it is something else
>>
>>54385294
In the time it takes to confirm someone has a gun, that person can shoot someone.

Not getting shot by a cop is frankly very simple. When they say "freeze", you don't take that as a SUGGESTION. You don't stop walking and try to argue. You don't try to pull out your phone to call somebody. You don't wave your arms and make a scene. You shut the fuck up and FUCKING FREEZE SOLID.
>>
>>54385294
>There should be a confirmation policy in place.
You know what? You are right. There SHOULD be a confirmation policy in place. In an IDEAL world, we would have the time to do that.

Unfortunately, we're stuck in a less-than-ideal world, with less-than-ideal people, who have to make split second decisions under duress. Put in the same situation, you would either fare no better or would wind up dead pretty damn quickly.

Newsflash: life is pretty damn shitty. Your hopeless optimism and pedantic whinging about what should be accomplishes nothing, because what you hope for can never exist in a non-perfect world.

Suggestion: Look up that whole serenity prayer thing. It might actually do you some good.
>>
>>54385250
A few days ago in Australia, a guy was shot by a cop at a swingers party.

>It was a costumed event at a sex-on-premises venue
>Guy and his partner came as Joker and Harley
>He had a toy gun that he made the staff aware of
>Someone anonymously called the cops (dodgy shit going on, not relevant to this)
>Cops rock up, liase with security on site
>security inform them there is no issue and tell them about the toy gun
>cops stay on site for an hour, watching from security room
>they never go in to talk or assess situation
>Call CIRT
>Within 30 seconds of rocking up, they've shot two people
>1 was the suspect with a toy gun, the other was the woman he was having sex with.

Cops claimed he reached for the gun, witnesses claim he was pulling up his pants. Video footage shows they shot him inside of 7 seconds of seeing him.

Who is at fault in this situation?

Protip:I was there
>>
>>54385186
Because if you dont, they can get your gun and kill you. When a gun is in play, it can be used, and therefore it should unless things deescalate quickly.
>>
>>54385401
So it was your fault.
>>
>>54385401
Probably the cop. Just because cops are justified in shooting when somebody threatens them, doesnt mean they're justified in everything they do. Quit assuming everything is black and white.
>>
>>54384241

>>
>>54385454

>>
>>54385454
It is black and white, though. Police officers are exoected to put their life on the line for public safety. The moment you start getting a police force that lethally defends themselves out of the fear of a potential situation, rather than the clear and present reality of it, you move away from having a police force and into the territory of state sanctioned thugs.

This line of reasoning looks valid, but then how do you explain that statistics show that other Western countries with more reserved police gun use manage to get by just fine?

Since the death rate is so minor and there is only small societal impact, it's not a major enough issue to justify getting emotional and personal about (like some assholes in this thread), but there is a basis for debate - that guidelines for police gun use in the US are too harsh and excessively permissive, and that an alternative way to rapid and lethal action does exist.

The US has a slant towards death at the hands of police because guns are so easy to acquire that any time a suspect reaches towards something out of sight, they have to be treated like a worst-case scenario.
Hesitation once things escalate to that level can be lethal if the suspect has a gun. They can't afford to take the chance.

>>
>>54385643
>>54385665
I suppose this could be settled by some international statistics on police shootings and casualties involving suspects with proven and suspected gun possession.

The US seems to have this unique problem (rapid lethal force) and also its unique circumstances (guns, race), but I'm not entirely convinced the correlation between the two exists; i.e. that you couldn't scale back the readiness to use lethal force without seeing a spike in police casualties, despite the US peculiarities.

According to Wiki, Europe in general is far less homicidal than America in general. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

For every 16 killings here, Europe has 3. Fuzzy math is fuzzy, but do some.
>>
>>54386080
>>54386184
It's difficult to make an apples-to-apples comparison since data is so haphazardly gathered and there's no international standard.
So America's homicide rate is so high because of the prevalence of weapons that make it very easy to kill with. I.e., guns. Also why households with guns have a disproportionately higher suicide rate; using a gun is a much more surefire way to successfully do it quickly than just about any other way.

>One shot is good enough to bring pretty much anyone down

There is an important difference between a shot that will kill someone and a shot that will stop them. The guy bleeding out in a few minutes doesn't help you if he has enough time to give you your own sucking chest wound before he succumbs.

If you're shooting someone, you shoot until they go down and stay down.

So, you're saying that the only reason anybody in Wales is even alive today (considering that it is ALREADY the "nation" with the highest rate of suicide per capita in europe) is because of the Gun Laws brought in banning handguns after the Dunblane massacre?

And THEREFORE if you also consider that Wales was the only UK country outside England to vote FOR Brexit that that this would have reduced the leave vote by 2.6 million and therefore resulting in a remain vote...

Gentlemen. It's clear that safer Gun Laws caused Brexit.

I actually quite like that. You can beat him the old-fashioned and really hard way, or you can exploit a weakness you know of and make things much simpler and easier, but not an insta-kill. This is how more games (tabletop and vidya) should do things.

Not that good actually, modern medicine can deal with a gunshot wound far better than a knife wound, since you know, it's a big thing in modern warfare to deal with bullet wounds. Knife wounds are harder to handle medically, and are just as difficult, if not harder to survive than getting shot.

>>54387827
Poor choice, important organs are in the side, like the liver, which is a "rigid" organ and has been known to get *fucked* up when hit by a projectile. Even then you're aiming at a very small portion of the body and is unlikely to rapidly incapacitate if the suspect doesn't surrender immediately on being shot. The safest place to shoot is actually considered the pelvis in general to my memory, but that carries the risk of crippling them and even then "safe" is a relative term when talking about getting shot.
>>
>>54387821
You know how people in movies tend to get shot in the shoulder?

If you shoot someone in the shoulder, blood will spew from that wound very quickly. The safest place to shoot someone should be in the foot and that will still cause serious bleeding

True, it's good, and I feel that the Nemesis System was one of the best mechanics of any game in the past five years or so. The problem is that for all the talk of players having a unique, personal Nemesis that hounds them for half the game, I feel that you quickly reach a point where no Uruk can stand against you because you're just so powerful, which means each new captain, warchief, and potential Nemesis immediately gets piled onto an ever increasing pile of Uruk corpses, so they all become interchangeable and boring.

I'm hyped for Shadow of War, but at the same time worried that the same problem will arise.

Yeah, I've been playing the first one recently, and although I'm not THAT far into it I have a slightly autistic perfectionist streak in this kind of game. So I've done ONE story mission, collected everything and done every possible sidequest in the first zone and made sure that I gather intel before killing every captain that spawns between starting any quest. I once spent half an hour being chased around by some scrubby captain in a town because I couldn't get the one Intel Uruk out of the horde with him without being gangbanged.

Anyway, I've found that although I really like the weaknesses thing and it may be just that they're all complete pussies at this point (lots have the "Die instantly to Archery or Stealth" thing and stuff) but when I've decided I want a fight and gone toe-to-toe with one of the big bastards with a billion melee tricks I still haven't found it all that hard. Stun/Slash comboes seem to do for most of them, and dodging anything they have isn't too hard even if I just want to chip them down with basic attacks.
Any suggestions for a challenge other than Speed Up and Do Quests? Graugs are the opposite, killed a couple just by sniping at them, getting a few hits on the stun and then darting out again, occasionally grabbing a couple Uruks to drain for arrows. Boring and a tad unrewarding.

The One Hit KO vulnerabilities will stop popping up once the Uruks start hitting level 10-12. One of the things you can do to make the game a bit harder (and lets face it, it is a rather easy game) is to go into the settings menu and turn off the combat prompts so you actually need to pay attention to who's attacking you and when. Turning off the AI awareness will force you to be more carefull because you can't see which enemies are alert to your presence or looking for you and turning of the enemy outlines will prevent the game from telling you when you are close enough for a stealth finisher, forcing you to be more careful. After that, you need to deliberatley cripple yourself by not buying upgrades or using runes in order to make the game harder for yourself.

Ah, I'll give that a go. The annoying thing seems to be that pulling off the sabotage is cool and makes you feel like a badass but simultaneously denys a considerable chunk of the challenge when you stabbed a sentry, shot two campfires and a Caragor cage and watch the Big Bad Warchief shit himself then get mauled to death by a cat in about ten seconds. Fun, but sometimes you just want to charge in there and mix it up with far too many enemies like Ryze Son of Rome if it was good.

Reminds me a tad of Dishonoured, and not just for the powersets being similar. It hands you a thousand entertaining toys (Combat gear, traps, powers and grenades, or the Nemesis system) then removed the challenge if you used them. At least DH was making a point, charging in and butchering everything as Corvo makes the story go rather badly, but in Shadow of Mordor it feels unintentional.

Yes. An officer does not use his gun unless lives are on the line. That's the rule. A gun is not a tool of discouragement. It's not a disabling device, like a tazer. It KILLS things. That's what it's supposed to do.

Attempting to use a firearm non-lethally is lunacy. And before you say 'rubber bullets' I want to to realize that the officer's life is his first concern. He doesn't use the gun because he wants you to stop doing thing. He uses it because he has justifiable reason to think YOU ARE GOING TO KILL HIM. And because he has to be able to safely do his job, the law protects his opinion. If it didn't he could not do what he does: keep idiots like you safe from dangerous people armed with lethal weapons.

When Liu Bei was attacked by Cao Cao's forces, he was forced to flee with the rest of his army and the peasants whom he was protecting. Unfortunately he got separated from his child during the escape. His trusted Lieutenant Zhao Yun took a squad of men and went back into the raided city where Cao Cao's army was pushing forward. Zhao Yun returned safely with Liu Bei's son but almost the entire group of men he took with him died fighting to ensure his escape. Liu Bei, frustrated with the sacrifice of good men, forsook his son, seeing the child as a poor trade for his lost men.

You are the ones saying that if someone is willing to accept a 1% chance of someone dying, then they should also accept a 100% chance of someone dying.

But that doesn't follow at all.

If I can shoot someone once and put them down on the ground bleeding with a good 50/50 chance of surviving, but a 100% chance that I can get the fuck away if I run, then shooting them again is at least 50% murder.

The logic is this:

>does this person need to die? (eg if he immediately threatens the life of others or yourself)

>if no, DO NOT SHOOT YOUR GUN because you will probably kill him if you shoot him

>if yes, SHOOT YOUR GUN UNTIL HE IS DEAD

You don't "shoot to incapacitate", because if you think the guy should be incapacitated and not dead, you should use a weapon that isn't likely to kill them like a taser or your fists. Don't try doing that against a person you think has a gun who's trying to kill you.

Except that you can't ensure that that first shot will put them down 100%.

Traditional taught marksmanship is to put a controlled pair(double tap) into the chest and then a single shot into the head, which covers most situations.

In a full on adrenaline rush, it's entirely possible for a man to not even realize he's been shot if it fails to hit something that will slow him down, so you want to take two shots to increase the chances of actually putting him down.

And if he's wearing some sort of body armor, you want to take a single shot to the head to account for that, because while getting hit while body armor can hurt like a motherfucker(and can still kill you if you're unlucky), the armor generally does it's job and keeps you from being removed from the fight.

Removing someone from a fight is not the same thing as killing him. You can shoot a man dead and he'll still have enough time to kill you back.

Someone who isn't dead is still capable of shooting you.

If your first shot is stopped by hitting a steel plate in someone's shoulder that you didn't know about, they can move their arm up and blow your brains over the street.

>that's just giving up on the option of incapacitating anyone who forces you to draw a gun.

If you're forced to draw your gun, you weren't planning on incapacitating the guy anyway. Let me repeat.
IF YOU WANT TO INCAPACITATE SOMEONE USE A TASER, OR YOUR FISTS. You shouldn't draw on someone that you don't think is a danger.

Do you really want police to be allowed to incapacitate people with guns? You really want to have police start shooting people in the back and say "he probably wouldn't have died so I was ok to shoot him so he didn't escape"? Because that's what you're suggesting police use their guns to do.

>>54389474
>keep them alive 100% of the time?

Non-lethal tools like tasers, pepper spray, and clubs are not almost completely ineffective against people armed with guns or people who are so off-their-gourd on drugs that they wouldn't feel a grenade take a limb off. When half a second makes the difference between life and death (yours, your fellow officers, and the civilians you are surrounded by), you don't gamble. You use your gun. And if you have to fire your gun you put however many bullets you need to into the threat until they cease to be a threat. This is a vital part of training as a police officer. These protocols are drilled into every officer because the ones who don't get it are KIA.

That statement right there is so dangerous I can't even begin to unpack it.

If you point a weapon at someone with intent, you are signaling that you are going to kill that person, or are willing to do so. If you pull the trigger, then you are trying to kill them.

There is no gray area here.

Alright let's try this from another point of view. How do you do it.

Let's assume for a second that you're the officer in the OP for this whole argument. How do you handle the situation in a way that guarantees two things: 1) that the punk in front of you is no longer a potential threat to you and nearby civilians, and 2) your safety?

To be a functional cop you MUST HAVE both. Not either, both.

Remember: you don't know if he has a gun.

>I get the logic, but the first point is set a such a low standard (can't see the hands, threatening posture, aggressive behaviour etc.) that what follows is almost a binary - comply (and pray to God you don't look the slightest bit shifty while doing it) or die. That's extreme. Other Western countries don't do it this way, and their police aren't dying in droves either.
Other western countries DO do it this way with armed police. The problem is that there's a much more perceived prevalent armed crime in the US, along with the government going "hard on drugs" or whatever they're going hard on leading to excessive force police raids.

That, and US police are all armed due to the number of perceived threats. A good number of western police don't arm the majority of their police: Britain, Ireland, Norway, Iceland and New Zealand are all examples. That means their gun squads get to have extra gun training, and the police that don't find it exceedingly hard to shoot people without a gun.

You are shooting at someone because the situation has escalated to the point where you had no choice but to use a lethal weapon.

There is a difference between shooting someone until they are down, and continuining to shoot, thus brutally executing them in the street.

Though, if Wikileaks is anything to go by, it seems that American police tend to find that distinction extra difficult, compared to the rest of the world.

There is no puzzle; just don't execute people who are clearly disarmed and incapacitated. And if it can be proven that a policeman just shut off his brain and murdered someone without checking if they even had a gun to begin with, then he is obviously to be fired.

Police need to be held to a higher standard. If they are allowed to just go judge Dredd at the slightest imagined threat to their safety, then you're just paying them to execute people in the streets.
Sometimes for no real reason other than reflex or instinct.
That breeds a careless chucklefuck attitude, and that's exactly the kind of shit that doesn't fly in other countries.

No fucking surprise you've got so many violent deaths.
It's not a terrible thing to encourage police officers to be slightly more careful and calculating, if it literally saves lives.

>But why not?
Because even wounded, an armed (or unarmed) assailant is a mortal threat.
>I find a policy of "always shoot to kill" hard to justify.
It's easy to justify if you understood, even a little, about how bullets and guns work. I'll drop a few talking points here:

1. I'm just quoting numbers from the hip, but handgun rounds travel 600-800mph. You shoot someone once, they're not going to realize they've been shot until the brain catches up. That could take seconds to hours, depending on circumstances. (like drugs!)

2. A bullet doesn't magically and arbitrarily stop when it hits something. Like the Energizer Bunny, it just keeps going, and it may not keep going in the direction you pointed the gun. Let's say you shoot an assailant in the arm: it's going to enter and exit and keep going. Maybe it goes across the street and hits a tree- no big deal. But maybe it goes through the person's arm and across the street and hits someone driving down the road. maybe it ricochets off the bone and kills a kid. Now you've got injured/ dead people, and an assailant that doesn't realize he's been shot.
3. it is incredibly difficult to shoot a moving limb. center mass is called "center mass" because it's big and obvious and not at all difficult to hit, even under intense scenarios.

summary: it's far more effective and reliable to shoot to kill than it is to shoot to wound.

Ok, sure.

What's that got to do with a policeman with a gun on a suspect who's acting like he's got a gun behind him and makes as if to pull it out?

What should the cop do?

a: shoot him until he goes down
b: wait and see what happens
>>
>>54390371
He's already "answered" that question, he's going to say "shoot the guy until he stops and call an ambulance" while then proceeding to say "But american police can't stop shooting the guy and they execute him on the ground!"

What I find interesting about this one (assuming its real at least) is that i get the feeling that this woman is not (or is not aware of) her actual relationships with her friend/sister/cousin. And there are some red flags pointing towards her being maybe some kind of narcissist. I remember there being a small discussion about that last time i saw it on here.

Mind you, Im not defending the Ex's actions or anything like that, but unless this man is a hentai-protagonist you cannot make people hate each other with your magical penis. Im willing to bet that there is some beef between the women in the story that the narrator is not willing to share (or aware of).

It bears mentioning that Zhao Yun was acting on his own, not following orders, and was probably one of the most talented generals in the entire time period. If he wasn't number 1, he was close.

Liu Bei was genuinely horrified that Zhao Yun would subject himself that an insane (and it was insane) mission behind enemy lines to rescue a baby.

Remember, these are Chinese people in the highest social class. It hadn't even lived through the medically sketchy baby segment of life. A baby meant literally nothing to Liu Bei compared to the life of his star general.

Unfortunately, and hilariously, that same baby that Zhao Yun rescued and Liu Bei spiked on the ground eventually grew up to become a ruinously bad and probably mentally challenged leader Liu Chan, who brought down the entire kingdom with his incredible incompetence. Could it be related to being thrown on the ground as a baby? You decide.

So Zhao Yun's secret ops rescue is somewhat of a strange event from all angles.
