I haven't played 40k regularly since 3rd edition - I am building an IG army and don't know what weapons and equipment are still viable in this edition.

Can anyone give a basic run-down of what special/heavy weapons and equipment are generally good to have for guardsmen/scions/ogryns/Heavy weapons teams?

I will eventually get extra models with all the extra weapons and equipment so that I can field anything, but right now I don't have that option.

It's a lot of cancer. I'm still friends with a lot of people I worked with and we're all about theme, painting and modelling and getting together at home tables for beers and games. We do a lot of campaigns/narrative stuff and nobody builds WAAC lists or spams anything.

Sounds like a fine plan. We've already discussed how ratlings are currently the most efficient sniping unit, their only real drawback is that they're squishy and not terribly mobile. Bunker seems like a natural place for them.

I wouldn't say Melta sucks, but with the current Horde meta plasma is definitely stronger.
Not to mention with the new rules for strength vs. toughness, Plasmaguns are more reliable due to their higher RoF. Meltas wounding tanks on 3/4+ is rough.
