Hay /tg/ I am new to Warhammer not the lord but actually playing 40k and was hopeing you could recommend a starting army, my pal plays Tau if that's any help.
I don't envy you to be honest, I play with friends and even when not cheesing in the slightest Tau are usually not fun to play against.
Depending on how competitive you guys are it's always a good idea to start with a force that you're actually interested in. Granted playing guard is not like playing dark eldar.
I'm a pretty competitive guy and he is to, it makes sense that he would play Tau. He is a giant dingus.

Go and read a bit about the different armies, what the look like, how they play etcetera. Or you could tell us what play styles you're drawn too we could make suggestions.

instead of telling you the game will never be fun, i'm goin to tell you one of the most important things you'll have to do is pick the army you think looks the coolest. you won't enjoy the hobby part of warhammer if you have to work on things you don't like.
i picked eldar because i like elves and wizards and i like the look of wave serpents and most of the other units.

Stop replying to yourself.
I'd like to play a mele army to counter his Tau but my local shops never have any Tryanids also I hate the Tryanids.

The first thing you have to ask yourself is why play with someone like that, that said, there are armies that can be cool and competitive, just don't think you'll get away with fluffy lists.

Ok, now this is starting to get suspicious...
