STEP: the Next. If you have a fancy pdf that has unwanted clutter on it, here is one way to clean it.
Contact our resident Transmutation Wizard and politely ask him to clean a pdf. He will set his scrying device to accept pdfs and then you ship it to him. Magic occurs, then the pdf is purified.

I think specific smaller curated troves are easier to maintain than huge Collections.
Check out Da Curated Archive to see what's in it.
Pick a game or small publisher you like that’s not too big and complete it as best you can easily.
Upload the pdfs somewhere. Hunt for and request the missing things. If it gets taken down, put it up again later. Using indirect links seems to work for Mageguru.

Well, if the links stay up for longer, more people will have access to the files. It's that simple. When someone else comes around asking for something that has already been shared, people just have to point them to that link or to Da Archive. If it keeps getting shared without obfuscation, the files will keep getting removed and then when someone shows up asking for it, the same files will have to be uploaded again to a new link. And again and again. That's a pain in the ass to keep doing repeatedly, so people who have those files will start sharing them less and less and previously readily available items will begin to disappear. Also, the thread will start to get cluttered with the same repeated requests for files that have already been shared before. All of that is already happening as we speak. The simple request not to share links without obfuscation is fairly reasonable and benefits everyone who visits this place, cleaners, providers and anonymous requesters alike. It's not making up rules for the sake of making up rules, nor it's claiming personal ownership of pirated material. It's just a matter of practicality to make this place work more efficiently. It's the whole reason we can keep an archive of links to begin with. If people keep posting links to files without any obfuscation, pretty soon there won't be an archive anymore (what would be the point?) and all that previously shared material will be gone. Yes, we are a community of anonymous pirates sharing stolen goods, but we're still a community. We shouldn't forget that.

Well, if it's something that's already scanned but you want a cleaner copy (fuzzy, off-kilter, etc.) or your name removed from a file, then send me a link and I can clean it up.

If you want something actually scanned, tidied up and posted, then you can snail mail the books to me, I can scan them, then return them. I've done it a few times recently. But I know some people are paranoid about that kind of thing. The recently posted Justice Inc. boxed set was an example of something someone sent me to scan. Took me about a week all told to scan/clean (covers were a little rough).

If you're wanting to scan on your own, then you are on your own. But if that is the case, I would be perfectly willing to follow behind and tidy it up for if all you want to worry about is raw scans.

Remove staples if the source material is saddle-stapled, or hair dryer if glued.

Scan all pages onto a thumb drive (attached to printer/scanner. I can choose varying degrees of resolutions in addition to color or not). So for example, color for covers, then B&W for inner pages (saves time for me to not have to de-colorize later). Super high quality for covers, mid-range for inner pages.

Take thumb drive to laptop, make duplicate copies of scans (in case I fuck something up), then start batch processing B&W's in Photoshop to remove most of the greyscale, as well as do a quick run-through of the images in case there is a noticeable glitch (spot on scanner glass, or page lines, etc.).

Review B&W pages for general contrast/clarity, then start individually rotating images until they are true. In addition, make a template for each page size (landscape & portrait). I include borders on this template if they appear on a majority of pages. Make adjustments on each page (replacing individual letters, fixing printing errors), then copy material into template, save each page as it's number. This ensures consistency (especially if I'm working from someone else's scans) throughout the document. Since Photoshop has native grids, it's easy to align images to true.

Then work on color pages/covers in Lightroom (easier to correct gamma/exposure than Photoshop), then in Photoshop for the majority of work. 9/10 times there are scuff marks, tears, gouges, folds, dogears, you name it. All of that is corrected/removed digitally, with reference material at hand, either physical copy or if from digital source only, download an "official" thumbnail photo so I don't miss anything.

Then one more eyeball pass through of each page, then compile in Acrobat Pro, and if an OCR is needed/requested, CleanScan OCR pass.

There are times when I've stared at the same source material for so long that I feel like I've played the game in my head. :-)

By far the most annoying part of that whole process is getting crappy source material where the scanner clearly didn't give a shit or have any clue about clarity or resolution. Older files? Sure, I get that, not many people really thought about it back then. But now? Sloppy.

There have been plenty of times where I am literally drawing replacement lines or typing replacement text when the source material is all I have to work with. The Blake's 7 Technical Manual was rife with those.

I should be on to the Castle Zazyg Upper Works cleaning/ocr later this week in case anyone is keeping tabs.
