Goblins are for "wild" shortstack chasing - they give in readily enough, and more than one adventurer has taken a goblin concubine or two, but socially, they're seen as rather second class.

Halflings are easy-mode shortstacks.

Gnomes are, technically, as easy to bang as halflings, but are harder to maintain.

Kobolds are like goblins, but with the added stigma of being scalies, which some puritans really flip out over.

Dwarves are hard-mode amazon shortstacks. They're not easy to bang, because dwarves are conservative, but if you want a musclegirl shortstack, they're your race.

Never been a fan of either, really. I like goblins better as really twisted savage humanoids, basically equal parts malice, teeth, and green, while Gnomes have no niche that isn't better filled by dwarves or halflings with the possible exception of Tinker Gnomes and their hyperactive mad scientist route, but they are fucking annoying and DF Dwarf "Moods" could be used to cover the territory.

Well, in my homebrew, at least, dwarves aren't actually another race so much as a clan of humans with dwarfism (duh) that ended up settling further north than the original humans wanted to go. Modern day, they've got quite the significant human population, and of course every once in a while genetics makes a dwarf/dwarf pair have a human baby. So there's not so much Half-dwarves as there are Kthudum citizens, of which about 1/3 are normal hight and 2/3 have a variety of dwarfism that's been bred for toughness and survivability in cold, mountainous regions with plenty of warfare.

Goblins are aliums, so can't breed with humies.

Gnomes aren't actually sapient, and are basically tiny monkeys with big red floppy things on their heads and huge beards that run around and nick shit. Some orcs think it's good luck to feed them, but most humans who come into contact with them think they're fucking vicious and try to exterminate them because fuck gnomes.

Now a Half-dwarf Elf is a interesting concept, and probably happens often enough because of the bonanza of sea trade between the elves and the dwarves.

So, say you've got a world where Dwarves, Goblins and Gnomes are all civilized races. What niche would you give them?

My kneejerk thought is stick to the classic "gruff miner and proud warrior race guy" for dwarves, make gnomes a magical race (basically Elves but small sized) since they're built out of the magical dwarves of real-world folklore, and have goblins as either the tech race or basically wild, tribal people - half-orcs/wood elves as a small race.

Which, to keep it thread relevant, would mean your shortstack choices are either a shortstack musclegirl, a cute nerd/hot witch hybrid shortstack, and either a green-skinned wench-wrench or a nubile savage shortstack.
