They're all fine as long as nobody is trying to do fetishy shit.

Probably something like the Formians from dnd. They are basically just ant-folk so they are too gross and insecty to be sexualized by furries. I mean, nobody would be attracted to an ant it's too weird.

Haha yeah, I mean what would they be attracted to? The sleek body, long legs, the submissive worker instinct to follow orders? That'd be weird haha who would even think an ant girl could be sexy? Does anyone have any pictures of ant girls, just for laughs haha?

Anthro races are frequently done right by settings. It's usually not the settings that get it wrong. It's usually the fandom and their deviantart accounts that "does it wrong".... so... so... wrong.

Let's get one thing out of the way: Anything and everything will be sexualized by the fanbase. So if you include fan creations, fan works, autistic furry communities et cetera, then none of them. But I think that's unfair. You don't need to pay attention to a fanbase to enjoy a work. Indeed, you usually shouldn't. Likewise, how well-received a work is should be irrelevant to if its use of anthros is "done right" - it being a popular work or not is a question of fan reaction, not a question of its creative design.

So that brings us to ask, what does "done right" entail? What makes some anthros work better than others? We need some ground rules, OP. I suggest we start with the following:

>No sexualized furry shit
It needs explaining that all characters will be sexualized to SOME degree, because they do need to appeal to the audience to be sympathetic, and most characters will tend to have traditionally attractive features (slim build, muscular males, feminine females etc). We are, after all, talking anthros. But no shitty fanservice shit - I think we can all agree on that.
>Being an anthro animal must actually be relevant to their character
They shouldn't be humans with fluffy tails who otherwise act as ordinary humans - then what's the point? Their species should actually be relevant to their characterization - you shouldn't be able to replace a "done right" anthro with a human seamlessly.

I can't think of anything else, but those two will do for a start.
>>
>>54347985
With that in mind, I can think of examples.

Anyone on /tg/ on a Sunday morning in a thread about furries is autistic. Pointing this out still means you're here in this thread on a Sunday morning reading a wall of text seriously though that's only one post do you have ADHD? about anthropomorphic animals and says just as much about you as me.

tl;dr: Don't get to thinking you're better, because if you were, you wouldn't be here.

>>
>>54345789
agreed, beastly races are fine as long as that's what it is. I played a catfolk rouge once and used Bloody Roar artwork for character concepts and he was a street brawler who used his claws as conceled weapons and tied trophies in his hair. He was a feline humanoid not a kawaii desu nekomimi or a slinky sexy kittykat.

Not everyone who wants to play a lizardfolk or catman is a furry in hiding, just like every gnome player isn't hiding a raging midget fetish and every elf isn't turgid under the table for long haired ladybois, its the player not the race.

These kind of posts give me a chuckle, because they come across as showing how much more fixated on the sexual part of anthropomorphic animals people who are against furries are, than those who actually like playing them. The average normie would probably look at a lion woman with tits and say, "Hey, boobs" and leave it at that, but the average fa/tg/guy loves to screech about how this fictional creature doesn't adhere to real-world science.

I'm glad there's at least a few other people in thread that know about C.J. Cherryh's Chaunur series.

But, no mention of the Kzinti? Really?
>>
>>54353398
That name sounds familiar. Go into details
>>
>>54353430

The Kzinti are from Niven's Ringworld novel and the other novels that are set in the same universe. There's a lot of short stories/novels written about the period prior to the discovery of the titular Ringworld during the Man/Kzin wars.

They're big, bipedal cat men with weird batlike ears that look goofy and cartoonish at first glance, but then when you're trapped in a room full of their musk and hate you'd rather be anywhere else, even hard vacuum.
>>
>>54353501

Oh. The Kzinti also bred intelligence out of their females. They're essentially just semi-sapient sex slaves. Not all Kzinti females are like this, just the ones that have been modified by looted gene manipulation tech (which is the majority).

A lot of "fetishy" races are kind of like that.
>Sergals: an interesting warrior race (ignoring the blatant torture porn and weird clitoral hood stuff)
>Yinglets: like Kender done right - they're stupid, oddly common, and don't seem to understand more sophisticated society, but their stupidity makes them rarely successful and people hate or look down on them (ignoring the creator's TF/genderbend fetishes)
>Hammerspace Dragons: a nonhumanoid race that makes up for physical weakness with appealing to utility while trying to rationalize draconic pride with "your method of transportation is literally someone's pocket, or maybe their shoulder" (ignoring that they're pretty much dragon vore: the species)
...actually, I don't recall any others, aside from Chakats, who have irredeemable lore. It's almost as bad as Kender; the creator of chakats could've gone a much more interesting way by having there be two subspecies, a tough, strong, kinda dim big-cat type relying on being probably a literal ton of feline muscle, and a slender, wily, rather fragile housecat type relying on having meatshields to direct and for protection.

Snek unrelated.

I love Khajiit.
>>54345699
OP, the problem with your question is that in many cases, it's not the race that's done wrong, it's the fanbase that builds up around it. In principle, there's nothing really wrong with "anthro animal races." The problem is with fetish races. Furries causing a significant overlap between the two is probably the reason for the stigma on anthro races, but ultimately "animal people" is, on its own, unobjectionable.

Personally, my red flags for "objectionable anthro race" would include the following:
>Noble savages
>"Free love" or otherwise "progressive" culture
>"Humans are the real monsters" view
>Functionally fuzzy humans
>Presented as inherently more "spiritual" or "enlightened"
>Don't understand the concept of property
>Suspiciously sexy modes of dress as a culture

The Wing Commander 3 Kilrathi were relatively well done in my opinion.

I always liked the character of Hobbes, and the later plot points with him genuinely pissed me off, because I liked the idea of a defector helping the humans.
