Humans are one of the shortest-lived sentient races, with an average lifespan of just 70 years after adjustment for infant mortality. Nevertheless they've left a considerable mark on the world--their cities are large, their population numerous, and their archmages have pioneered some of today's cutting-edge magical techniques. But for all that they've accomplished, there is a discrepancy that one cannot help but notice when reading the more ancient histories. While our ancestors attitudes towards other races would be considered... well, flagrantly xenophobic in modern times, they were not so deep in these beliefs that it would cloud their writing to such an extent that they would describe the average human as, to quote the Illariad "standing at seven foot talle, and weighing three hundred pounds of brutish muscle". Although some discrepancy can be chalked up to the more civilized lifestyle that humans now lead, I theorized that there may be evolutionary factors at work.

For those unfamiliar, neoteny is a biological term related to the retention of juvenile traits in an adult. The axolotl, for example, spends its entire life in what would be considered a juvenile state for amphibians. Under the correct conditions, however, they can be made to undergo metamorphosis into a 'proper' adult form. My theory was that a combination of factors, such as the total destruction of their native homeland of Kartholm, and differences in diet are the root cause for this.

I wasn't able to get much of a grant for this, so my test subject group was all of one individual, but at least the control group was 'all other humans. For this experiment I converted a guest building at my family estate into a magical biodome, you can see the blueprints in the handout. Notably it includes a gym, and a portion of the nearby forest, which was magically partitioned from its surroundings.

As I mentioned earlier, I theorized that the destruction of Kartholm played a role in humanity's current neoteny--you see, in addition to its general reputation as an untamable wildland, Kartholm had some unique magical properties--there are rock samples removed from the region before the Scourging, and they maintain that unique magical signature even now--when the region was still intact, it would have been fairly swimming in this aura. I apologize for the rushed nature of the picture--she declared that her ancestors had appeared to her in her dreams, and that it was her sacred duty, quest, and destiny to restore Kartholm. Now, the change in physique is obvious, but I should note that the clothing and weaponry she fashioned herself--I remain uncertain how she constructed a forge within the confines of the experiment area.

I initially declined due to the danger and the need to maintain experimental integrity, but she put me in a headlock until I acquiesced.
