kujo painting has some nice guides on blending and such. but getting something similar to that is going to take hundreds of hours of hard work, its not really worth going for something like that without an airbrush, unless you're going on a smaller scale like this.

Yeah man. The trick is to thin your paints and to use many layers, even with shit like this. The whites were minimum 3 layers plus touchup. I mark out anything I can with a big + in the middle of the pauldrons and use that as a frame of reference for positioning and build basecoat to topcoat like any other piece.

Just need to take it slow as fuck and be ready to fix and tidy up shit with the colour you painted the entire pauldron with.

Colourblind Anon here.

Could anyone tell me what paint was used on the rim of these bases?
>>
>>54286216
It actually wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be, since I just opted to use a marker to make the eagle. Comes out shiny as hell but I topcoat all my models before doing metals since I've had really nice badgework and the like just eaten away by regular handling and transport. Takes the shine out and makes it look real nice.
I did ardcoat the Iron Lord one though, since I realized I chose three chapters with a black background and needed some kinda variety. Still unsure how to differentiate the Black Consuls marine I'm making.

Godspeed.

Ive done the same thing a couple times in my squads. On vets you can just mix it up with chapter color, company color, and silver as your trim color to add some variety, but its harder with terminators.

Use a lot of light sources when you're painting. I'm doing Deathwatch marines atm and if I don't have a shit ton of lights on them I can't see the highlight colours at all.

Also I just follow guides for the most part, mainly Duncans. If I want to paint a red cloak for my Deathwatch Captain I'll just copy the guide for the Admech Vanguard cloak. Takes away the guess work.

Yeah simply not having the shoulder trim is killing me. That and the only terminators I used were Deathwing and the vanilla kit. Have a Blood Angel and Space Wolf on the way but the rest of the guys it was extremely hard to make them look representative of their chapters.

Seriously I'd buy the shit out of an updated Terminator box if they made one. Though considering how things are going we'll get Primaris terminators and the old kit will be left to rot forever.

If you use nuln oil to paint thin lines where the armour sections meet it'll give it a bit more depth and quite easy to achieve. The vids on the warhammer channel showing how to paint various types of power armour explain it pretty well.

>>
>>54287629
Consider using stormhost silver or liverator gold to highlight your gold bits.

Most of your edge errors look less about confident brush control and more about maintaining the right consistency of the paint. Make sure you aren't overloaded or too thin right when you load up, that's the prime moment for your paint to bone you. Dont hesitate to just wipe off the paint with your finger while it's wet and thin if you goof.

Also a brighter color in the eye lenses and a highlight on the sgts hair would be good.

I'm always jealous of ultras. Best transfer sheets.

>Emperor's Children Resurgent
Resurgend.
adjective
1. Rising or tending to rise again; reviving; renascent.

Seems pretty fitting to me, given that Cawl got his hands on the original Genes of Fulgrim. Like the Phoenix from which they originate, they rise up and make a splash. Subtlety was never a strong point for the pretty marines, unless you're talking about based Saul Tarvitz or equally based Solomon Demeter.

Should be able to. Took another look at a couple of mine to double check, but they have 4 joints to the leg: hip, the two hing joints for the knees, and the ball and socket at the feet. Try some nuln oil in some of the crevices like near the gems; not a lot, just enough to get a bit of a darker hue.

Painting skin is tons of fun. That skin tone will be difficult to highlight as it's already so pale, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just patch up some of the shaded areas as I'm sure you plan on doing and it'll look great. If you want to brighten up and highlight your red a little, try adding some orange into the red you use for a slightly natural brighter tone - not enough to turn orange, but enough to change the hue a bit.

There was a guy at the store the first time
I went to main GW in Sydney's city center, So it was gonna be interesting to see whether the hype was real about this 'battle bunker'. Once I got there it was on the whole underwhelming and weird. The main thing i remember was the awkward school arts desks and tables with their benches attached all circular, forcing everyone to sit extra close with no space and awkward sitting all the cases on the table. One 'pro' painter I sat next too was constantly; like as if to take a quick inhale of his paint brush, took the hair of the brush and licked or like pursed the end between the sides of his lips just after dabbing it in thinned out shades. he did this every brush stroke, I suppose he was trying to 'clean' the brush of its shade, he did it in such a nonchalant manner I figured it was an actual practice of painters. I left the store rethinking whether the hobby was for me. I like the models but I hate the community why does something like this have such an incredibly confronting level of autism among its members.

Are you supposed to enjoy sipping the end of a shade off your brush like its medicine? What was it all about?

How do you make white work?

You'll notice the white war walker in the background, I've primed a few models in white and it just doesn't work out when you're moving to dark colors. I had 9 coats of a darker color and it still looked white with a wash. It's actually what made me give up on getting green tanks.

Licking your brush is a quick way to reintroduce moisture as the paint dries on the tips of the bristles. It also happens to be disgusting and generally unnecessary. Some people find it saves them time though, so its a preference thing. As far as the autismo quotient, "social games" of all types that have written rules (most all of /tg content) appeal to people with deficient social skills because it provides a venue for them to interact (which most autistics crave, despite appearances) which also has a rigid system devoid of nuance which they can clearly understand, and also satisfies their need for restricted/repetitive interests

Hey there /wip/ friends, really cool to see what everyone is working on as always. >>54293056
and >>54292487 are looking pretty sweet.

Since I don't play 40K/AoS (though I'm kinda interested even if just to paint some guys) I've been scrounging around for things to paint. Recently its been minis for D&D and I had the idea to drag out the MtG Arena of the Planeswalkers game that I've never opened to maybe paint some of those dudes up.

Decided to go with the pummelroot elementals to start with (2 others besides the one in the pic), so I'll be watching some Sylvaneth how-to vids. The sculpt on these leaves a little (a lot) to be desired. With black primer on they look more like spawns of Hedorah than tree-like elementals. You can hardly see where the moss/greenery begins and ends but oh well. Anyone else painting up any board game minis?

on a palet, or on a wet towel/papertissue (not toilettissue since it disovles)
if you cant work with water then get a retardeder from vallejo. its a gel which allows you to work with paints on a liquid level. it dries very slowly so you can perfectly use it for blending.

Sometimes seeing the color out of context can be quite helpful.
Colorpick the dark, medium and light colors and just paint them in a blob somewhere so you can see the colors. It's kind of like the thing with the blue/black or white/gold dress, our brain sometimes does funny things.

I'd also say nay to the green flesh. The sickly flesh like on the guy to the left works way better with blue.

>>
>>54297379
The fang would probably work but I'd say you should probably prime white to get it looking a bit more pale.

Also no to the green flesh, regular sickly flesh complements the blue very well.

>>
>>54297585
You might be able to achieve passable results with just basecoating them and then dipping them in quickshade. Although tau are fairly bad for that, what with all those flat armor panels.
>>
>>54297585
check out alternate painting techniques that work for you then.
Look into working with washes and drybrushing for example.
That way you can let the sculpt do the work for you.
Armypainter has a bunch of interesting material on their dipping methods. It's pretty easy to do and gives solid results too.
>>
>>54297585
airbrush them, you can even set highlights with airbrush depending on what angle you spray from. for shadows use either airbrush for big shadows and for small ones army painters quickshade.
you can mask the parts you dont want to airbrush with putty or tape. for small details like eyes you need to ask someone i guess.
but the quickshade from army painter is really well. see results here:

>>
>>54297585
A few suggestions.
1, sheer bloody practice. Whilst you may have an actual medical trait, sometimes a fuckton of practice can actually help with this.
2, Find a painting technique that suits. Basing, maybe a layer or two, washing and dry brushing alone should give good standard tabletop models. Not everything needs to be overly complex (In fact, I would avoid this).
Start simple, and if you feel confident, try something new. (When I started, my Tau were just all black, with a few leadbelcher components and red eye lenses. But now I have gotten better and re-done them, they are now much better looking Chaos Tau.)
3, wrist/hand support.
Any Veteran painter will tell you this is the only way to ensure a semblance of control. Elbows on table (So the model is at eye hight, or what ever is comfortable), hand braced against hand/model (apply enough force to avoid shaking, but not in a way to break the model). Just do whatever helps control your hands.
4, mind over matter.
Whilst cliche, I personally find that calming myself through Meditation or some other means helps greatly with all motor skills, even the fine ones required to paint. This could help for you as well.
5, patience.
Like shooting, don't just wipe the brush on there, but wait until you are satisfied you have it. If your hands shake uncontrollably, just 'reset' your position and try again, eventually making a suitable stroke.
Painting mini's takes quite a while, so expect a while to be needed.
Just go ahead and try, and don't give up.
Please post pics?
