There's a competitive D&D game I'm interested in at my local games store. I usually just make fun characters to play so I'm not great at making something powerful. Anyone got any ideas for something following these rules? 5e btw
Characters are going to be 5th Level
>Competitive D&D
BUT MUH ROLEPLAY

it's just a one-off for fun. I rarely get to make new characters and it's a big battle royale so I wanna go.
If all you're doing is killing other PCs at 5th level my first guesses without thinking it through too hard would be Rogue, Paladin or Druid.
Depending on how the fights work since swashbuckler is off the table rogue might be kind of mediocre though since it could be hard to get any sneak attacks
Paladin just sort of generally good while having the most ability to kill shit quickly while expending all its resources
And druid because of wildshape

Shit sorry I meant to type 4th Level

If you read the rules, we're only allowed stuff from the PHB
Ok, I just read 5th level
Go caster because due not having money Martials are gimped as fuck at 5th level (no heavy armors).
My option would be Warlock2/Sorcerer3 for EB shenanigans or Moon Druid5 because Wildshape at that level is still powerful af.

Seconding Druid.

Is this going to be a huge grand free-for-all, or a tournament fight?

4th level?....MoonDruid gets even more interesting now. Martials are an outright no now, not only they have zero money they don't even have extra attack. Game is rigged for casters.
ALERT: I meant to type 4th level instead of 5th

>No money so martials are fucked
>Elite array so gishes and other mad classes are fucked
Go SAD caster, probably Moon circle Druid would be the best option
Pick V. human and grab +2 HPs per level feat

Depending on how you get your resources back after fights probably human fighter with sharpshooter then crossbow master or lucky then. You'd only need to worry about dex and at that level character classes usually only have 23ish health so you could potentially take anything down in one round with crossbow master, but you'd basically have a guaranteed kill in two rounds with lucky. Initiative would also be in your favor as a dex class unless someone has alert
