WIP of my inquisitor for Shadow War. Made from lots and lots of bitz and gubbins, I wanted to make her look like a walking reliquary. I also like the idea of a non astartes being entombed in a slap dashed, custom power armor. Thoughts?

You can start by posting your pic, anon.
>>
>>54215220
I like your idea. Not so sure about the left arm though. Holding a cane looks a bit out of place with the pose you've got. I'd have gone for holding a book/skull/gadget or something along those lines.

Nothing special about this model. Put together with shaky hands, following the instructions exactly without any deviation or addition of extra bits.
It is however the very first model I've ever put together and holy shit I'm so proud.

Yes, she's an inquisitor and she does whatever she likes. Also I have a hard on for impractical asymmetry.

What bothers you with the pose? I like the fact she's too important to be battle ready. But I must say I also hesitated between a non power armor arm pointing forward or pic related.

>>
>>54215405
Congrats on your first model, anon. I advise you to paint before assembling models where the arms cover the chest area like yours. Painting his chest will be a chore with the rifle in the way. But he is your first model, and you don't alter your first model.

Posted in the previous thread. Reposting hoping to get more feedback.

>>
>>54215478
Yeah, I did consider that issue actually and thought 'oh man maybe i'll regret this actually', but basically ended up figuring that sod it, I just want to get at least one model assembled so I can say i've done it.
That and I looked up 'how to paint pathfinders' and first video I saw had a guy who had assembled one and then also didn't prime it or thin his paints, and if he can paint them then I sure hope I can.
>>
>>54215405

Very nice, anon ! I picked up the Pathfinders for Shadow Wars about a month or two back and I've been autistic about every little detail since they were my first ever miniatures.

I'll probably post mine later, though his arms aren't assembled cause I'm also autistic about the smallest details, even if they're not visible after assembly.
>>
>>54215444
fair enough. i asked because the first thing i saw is a big fuckoff sword thats taller than her and only 1 arm in power armour to wield it. but like you said its your thing so you do you. Model looks pretty good
>>
>>54215444
Hard to put into words, it just looks "off". Possibly a combination of the pose of the arm combined with its t-rexiness because its unarmored ends up triggering my autism.

I think holding the helmet would look cooler. I'd try that.
>>
>>54215546
Thanks! I also just got a pine vice and magnets in the mail after assembly, so i'm pretty much ready to put together everything if I want. I might hold off for now though until i'm more certain of how things will work out for the rest. Intend to magnetise three of the pathfinders minimum so they can switch between ion rifles and rail rifles as desired.

An update for the anon who gave me ideas the other day.

The right is the mini I was struggling to find inspiration for and he suggested autumn colours. I fucked around for ages and ended up just slapping some shit on it and calling it done. That was my forth mini done after a 10 year hiatus, and for posterity the big fucker Gnoll next to him is the third mini I painted.

Just show to show how much a solid plan can help a model and how shit it can turn out when you just wing it and make shit up as you go along.

Relatively new painter here and would like some tips. I normally paint bigger models so I found my custom nurgle warlord quite challenging. Specifically those tiny ass hoses on his face and chest, any advice on how to do them? Apologise for shitty phone camera that keeps flipping the pic
>>
>>54216251
Just like to say, as another very very beginner painter, dang that's really nice looking.
>>
>>54216232
Oh nice. I like the placement of the bonding knife actually, hadn't thought of that. I was honestly too afraid to deviate from instructions.
>>
>>54216362

Cheers dude. I definitely prefer painting the bigger ironjawz and nids though.
>>
>>54215368
Buy Primaris, nerd.
>>
>>54216251

You can always refine your technique for it to look cleaner and always use more paints and washes and highlights.

Also gloss varnish for the guts and parts where there's fluid.
>>
>>54216251
The hoses look fine, they don't stick out as a problem area. I assume you just followed the tutorial so my main advice would be to branch out and think about different ways to achieve nice effects or even simply try different colours while otherwise following a tutorial. I don't want to say I'm sick of seeing Warhammer TV tutorial miniatures because it's a decent starting point for new painters, but man all those shit stripey sworded Guillimans got so tiring.

Quick question.

I'm thinking about cutting the head off the far left one, and replacing it with a bunch of flies. It looks bad now because it's blu tacked on. I'll be getting rid of the circular nub at the bottom and the flies will be going directly into the neck armour hole.

like the plague marine is hollowed out and just a bunch of armour moved by flies.

yes/no?
>>
>>54217464
Dr. Poxwalker's Discount Plague Emporium.
>>
>>54217658
Definitely very nurgle. Only issue i can think of is not a thematic one, but the fact that a bunch of flies flying around is not very easy to do modelwise, and can easily look bad or misleading... You seem to be an okayish painter/modeller though, however. It could still be hard to pull off.

Cool idea.

Finally getting some time to paint so doing another unit of plaguebearers before I jump into plague marines. Anyone know when the easy to build set is being released? I want to do some conversions.

>>54217464
I like the job you're doing on these guys but I wish you would paint the eyes before dotting them. Just black around them with a black wash then white the eyes then dot them as you're doing. Would really make them pop. Same for the teeth possibly.

>>54217088
Smart.

>>54217658
Going to suggest no. Not a fan of those fly swarms they keep modelling, end up cutting them off whenever I can. Maybe if the flies were coming out of his armour it would make more sense than going in though.
>>
>>54217658
Love the idea, would be hard to do. Might be hard to make it work with bits of flesh exposed (Like on the stomach there) but that's not an issue if you want it to be a marine with his body being shoved around by flies or actually a bunch of flies in the armour. Do the flies fit well into the neck hole or will you need to file them down a bit? I've not got my hands on any of the new models so I can't have a fiddle myself.
>>
>>54216816

You reckon I could use citadel "ardcoat" on his guts to make them look shiny?
>>
>>54216251

I think the model looks a lot cleaner without the huge icon and all the smoke everywhere. Didn't like the nurglings either that's why he's standing on a marine head. Hope they give us a new thyphus.
>>
>>54216400

No your not watching horribly gone wrong NMM.
Im trying to do a retro color scheme on my Ultramarines. With added "modern" painting techniques but still using the classical colors.

This is still very much a wip, but how do you think he looks. I personally was a bit surprised on how good I thought the yellow looked in comparison to the grimderp gold that´s on the "so called" ultramarines now days, but perhaps that's just me having bad taste heh.

Am right in the midst of a gloss varnish, will ad wash, and decals on top of that, do some weathering and slap on a dull coat.
>>
>>54217728

Great looking models you got there! Nurgle looks surprisingly good in purple, who would have known?!?
Im saving this if I ever go to the dark side!
>>
>>54218300
looks promising.
Be sure to add white checks on your marines, yellow/red flames on your plasma weaponry and don't forget the danger stripes on powerfists and lightning bolts on vehicles.

The only thing I feel like commenting about is that the metal around his boot soles kinda makes them look like sneakers or something. Maybe you could tone that down a bit.
Otherwise pretty neat. Thumbs up from me.
>>
>>54217088

Looks great anon. You could improve on the cloth highlights, but you nail the highlights pretty darn good on the sharper edges on the armor! Especially like the text on the guys leg (far right).
>>
>>54218359

Thanks for the tip. Yea, I hope the boots will blend in nicely with the base once I ad some weathering powder to them. That is sure to tone down the metal at least.

>>54219544

The dark color is definitely by choice. I tried to go for a grimderp meets 2ed colors. And I had no intention to go >>54219122 if you catch my drift. I think I wanted to give the models a modern feel, the more of a dark blue you see a lot of painters use on their Ultramarines now days, but still keep the classical theme of them using a lot more colors and less metallics.

So as I said in the original post, its a "blend" of two styles.

>>54218640

I didn't want to paint the Iron Halo in metal, as I thought it took away from the oldschool idea of "colors everywhere". In the end I also implemented some green on the capes end-pieces, the once that are metal in the photo.

Here he is almost finished but in a rush-photo. Just wanted to show how the decals came out. Also did some minor scratches on him, and used some weathering powders to make him blend a bit better with the base as >>54218359

How do I get the results I want out of my yellows? I'm doing Mantis Warriors and their mouths and pauldrons are killing me. I either get it too thin and then there's this effect like water currents in it or under thinned and there's clumps in it.
I'm even basing in averland yellow first before using the yriel. Any help would be appreciated.

So, if I were to base my models by adding sand of my choice and then priming it, should I add my model onto it before or after? In the past I used to paint my model, put it on the base, and then do the base, but I can't really do that now since I'm going to prime the base. I felt like if I did the base separately, I would have trouble gluing the model to the base.
Any opinions/ideas?

How does Badger's spray primer (Stynylrez) compared to Vallejo's surface primer, except for the stupid fucking name?

I've got a Badger 105 patriot and the Vallejo stuff works fine for me, but I was wondering how Badger's is. Does it need to be thinned or is it good out of the bottle like Vallejo, is it as durable as Vallejo, etc.

>>
Few very beginner questions. Can anyone recommend what brushes to get to cover all my painting, third party? I'd rather not pay the GW premium for everything.
Also kind of minor but are there any tweezers anyone recommends? I barely have the dexterity for some really fiddly parts and I've been told tweezers make life much easier for those, but best not to use normal, everyday ones if I don't want parts being sent into a dark corner of the room with a pinging noise.

>>54223526
Army painter brushes are alright for beginners. Or just buy some 1€ ones from your local craft store. I ve utterly raped and am still mutilating my brushes after about a year. Any kind of tweezers will fling stuff if you're not careful but you should get the ones with a flat end bit not the ones shaped like a kitchen knife. Try forcing yourself to never cover more than the top half of your brushes with paint to prevent their timely demise also always wash them out cleanly but never forget them in water
>>
>>54223526
you'll want flat edged tweezers, any with a sharp point (like ones for plucking eyebrows) will ping shit across the room. Cheap and cheerful here, check eBay and amazon, as long as they are flat edged it's fine.

As far as brushes it's whatever is cheapest in your country. Here in the UK I'd say grab a Humbrol #000, #1 and #4. Covers all the basics (fine detail, detail, large areas/basecoating). Just ensure it's a synthetic brush if you are using acrylics (which you should be) as natural hairs don't like the carrier

Thanks muchly, that's really helpful, especially the specific brushes. For this three brushes will I need one for drybrushing and shading too or will they do fine enough for that?
>>
>>54223753
Drybrushing completely fucks up any brush, for years I used the starter brush I got in a £4.99 Airfix starter kit. So the cheaper the better here really it doesn't matter. Again just make sure it's synthetic.

They'll handle the shading fine though

>Did this guy get like a bio with BoP?

Yes.

When The Emperor ordered the Space Wolves to raze Prospero, they battled the Sons all the way to Tizca, their stronghold. Geigor, who was a member of Russ's own Einherjar, personally requested that he be allowed to lead the assault. Prior to the events leading up to the Heresy, the Wolves and Sons had fought side-by-side as brothers. During the Droggorn Campaign, however, the Thousand Sons had gotten wind of a precious cache of mystical artifacts, and abandoned their objectives to hunt them down. This cost the Imperium a tactical advantage, and more directly, hung the Space Wolves out to dry. Geigor's pack was killed, and only he survived. When it came time for revenge on the Sons, he wanted it!

nigga you gotta prime your models

also you gotta make your paints less watery when you thin them

use a pallet and get the right consistency before you apply it to the model.

also you gotta do two coats, sometimes three on the lighter colors
>>
>>54226889
God damn
>>
>>54226854
Yes you have to work your way up from a darker grey to a lighter grey before you put white down, the paint tends to be a bit transparent so colours like yellow or white are harder to put down.

you are spray priming, which is standard practice and not bad

if you are losing detail, then you are spraying too close and need to move the can further away when spraying

personally I take a regular paint of whatever color I need,
(though I stay away from the weaker yellows/whites because they are very streaky and transparent)
Then I take a big glob on a larger brush and dip it in some water, then I mix it in my palate until i have a really milky paint that maintains its color but is very fluid and drippy

then i slather the fuck out of the model I am wanting to prime until it is completely covered in paint

then i wait for it to dry

when it dries, if everything went right (which is about 90% of the time), I get a nice even coat of paint on the whole model, with no streaking and very very minimal detail loss if any.

Finished the head, not too fond of the Tyranid Colour scheme but I am trying to keep it Hive Fleet Leviathan seeing as they were the ones who attack Baal. Also what do you guys think about moving the carapace on the leg like that? Also I decided that I will scoring the right shoulder pad to make it look like a nid scratched it.

This is my WIP Lord of contagion. Almost everything is base coated and washed so far besides the cloak which has its first set of highlights. It's my first time painting white and doing gross nurgle stuff so c&c is more than appreciated.

They're fucking incredible, but I've found(probably not taking proper care of them) that the bristles wear down REALLY fast. I'm on my 3rd one in about 8-9 months. I use soap on em, too, but it seems I'm applying it improperly or something because every tutorial I've seen cleans them differently.

bad.

those are watercolor brushes. not good with thicker paints. plus the super fine ones are too short hair for thick paint; it will take no effort to draw paint up into the ferrule and fuck them up easy.

get some tamyia HF brushes and a tamiya pointed brush

>>
>>54228098
I've been squeezing it out onto some plastic that it doesn't melt, and using a tooth pick to apply it. I've tried using Tamiya's extra thin cement, but I can't get it to stick together anything that isn't perfectly flush. Is the normal stuff better?
>>
Has anyone painted or seen the Dark Imperium Death Guard painted in the Black Legion colors
>>
>>54228137
Never tried the extra thin stuff. Their regular cement works like a charm, you can apply a bit, wait a few seconds and when you attach the bit the cement won't drip off.

I use the non-miniature versions and the size 1 and 0 are great. I don't use them for everything but for painting detail and freehand they are far better than the hobby brushes I've tried due to much larger reservoirs and better points. I haven't had problems with apparent acrylic solvents eating the bristles, that sounds like bs.

I don't really like advocating looking at gore, but the model does a remarkable job at portraying fatty tissues and the like. Which would be yellow in coloration rather than red. So with that in mind I would still recommend looking up some references.

I've seen one of those painted taking that into account, and the guy who made the thing even added single black hairs to the most prominent warts on the model's back. Genuinely made me feel ill. Was a first for me.

Not actively, and when I am I'm making sure I try to get it out of there asap with brush soap. But the bristles stay stained with the paint or I may not be doing a good job of cleaning them with the soap. Pic related is brush 2 and brush 3, I left brush 1 at a friend's house but it's even worse than brush 2. It's bristles come to a flat head so there's no point what so ever. I understand I may have not gotten some of the paint out of the ferrule, but that shouldn't be what's causing them to wear away so fast.

Considering that I am completely new to the hobby and have never painted anything before I don't even know how I'm going to manage.
>>
>>54229865
>I don't even know how I'm going to manage.
If you've modeled yourself in a corner so to speak you can still try to paint the hard to reach places first.
So you'll probably do the armor on the model first anyway, cause it's covering most of the miniature, so just paint that to finish before you continue with the rifles.

It's not the most comfortable way to work, but it can be done. In general the idea of painting 'from the inside out' is pretty helpful. I.e. first all the hard to reach places and recessed areas, before moving on to the raised and most outward places. Saves you a lot of possible accidents.

Because the novels decided Bjorn was a nobody bolter tactical on Prospero. Looks sweet for a first marine.
Steps to go from there are basically twofold.
Tidy it up, and add depth.
Eg, run black around the side rim of the base, to keep it looking slightly tidier, and (carefully) using a wash to pick out the detail of the crevices, such as between the fingers or bolt shells.
Really, time will improve your skills. Just keep going at it.

>Bonus points if you can work out what old tg the floor tile they're standing on is from.

Colour scheme for MyGuys is grey armour with codex compliant company dependent trim (1st company white, 2nd company gold, 3rd company red...). Lenses, power weapons, etc. are bright green. Standard weapons I was going for an industrial type steel and brass look.

>>
>>54230769
Cheers anon, beakie was one of the first I did, so his edge highlights were all a bit wobbly. Will go back and sort them. I've also just noticed that I didn't add any gradient in his lenses.

Any tips for the gold? It's the colour I struggle with most.
>>
>>54230759
No need for bullying, they look perfectly nominal for a tac squad. Paint work is fine (highlights look a tad heavy in some parts, but not really that bad an effect).
However, they do lack a great deal of detail. Whilst this is fine for a Tac squad, it gets a bit boring if the entire army is similarly bland.
Working on anything else now?
>>
>>54230823
Yeah, that's a fair point. I was a bit scared of adding many embellishments on my first guys, because I've no idea what I'm doing. I was thinking of going back and adding some fine white squiggles as scripture to some large armour plates, and perhaps adding a few seals etc. thoughts on that?

Up next is either 2nd company command squad, or a veteran vanguard squad (if I can figure out how to paint a nice white). Hopefully those guys will be a bit less plain. I want to field this army with units from lots of different companies as well, to make them a bit less monotonous with the trim colour.

I've also decided since starting this squad that the fluff for these guys is going to be Arthurian Legend style knights, so that should give me a few more excuses to decorate. Any tips for the best ways to add a knight look that's a bit less grim and crusadery than the Black Templars? I was thinking of getting a few big shields for officers, to be painted up in their own colourful heraldry. Also some fur-lined cloaks if I can find any.

There, it will have to count as finished by now. Im fairly pleased on how it turned out using the classical colors of the Ultramarines but with a grimderp interpretation blended in.

Its still not showing the exact IRL colors, but I did my best to brighten the photo up a bit so you get an idea on how it actually looks.

Have since photo started on the first squad of regulars.

Fuuuuck, mirin. That's the first ultras paint job I've loved in years. Way less derpy than the old, way more eye catching than the new. Personally I like brighter colours on power weapons, but can't fault the technique. Made me nostalgic for the days of goblin green bases, would admire again.

The second link is great, although the first link look a bit too Space Wolves for what I had in mind. Thanks a lot man. Hope I've got something a bit cooler next time I post.

First of, thanks for the feedback!

The power weapon was one of the issues I actually had with the finished model! I was literally thorn between painting it like a red lollipop, just scream of classical "red-era". Same goes with the base, I was really thinking of putting a goblin green rim on the base, just to point out so much further that it follows a classical theme. But in the end, I still wanted to keep my basing technique to the standard of the rest of my models, and I simply chickened out on the sword.

The white was spray corax, basecoat pallid wych flesh, recess shade seraphim sepia, then layer and tidy up with pallid wych flesh. Bronze is warplock bronze, with Agrax wash. Green is castellan green and Agrax. Obvs there will be highlighting for all these colours eventually but I'm not quite there yet

I dig it. I recently painted the other metal tech priest.

Your paintwork seems good for a newbie. It's just some neating up that might be required.
With that being said, how the fuck do you get your nails bent like that and isn't it uncomfortable as fuck to have so long nails? I'm seriously asking.

That makes more sense, I guess this is better than the 3d6 method but it'll take some getting used to.

Either way, the guy at the Games Workshop recommended making a Tyrannofex so that's what it's going to be

Leaving any paint in the ferrule at all is exactly what is causing them to wear away so fast

All the maroons I assembled using this stuff ended up with abbadon syndrome.

>may have not gotten some of the paint out of the ferrule, but that shouldn't be what's causing them to wear away so fast.
paint in the ferrule is the fastest way to make a good brush completely useless.
If you leave shit in the ferrule the tip becomes splayed.

Not that guy but you could use bristles off an old brush

Does anybody have suggestions for sisters of silence schemes? Or any color combos that look good in general?

I was thinking of doing white armor with purple cloth for my girls but now that I'm basecoated I'm not so sure

Not the highest quality image, I know, but i'm the guy who made his first model ever earlier in the thread (the shas'ui I should probably not have put the arms on before painting). Just made my second model ever, and it's one i've magnetised, a pathfinder with rail rifle. Was really careful and it paid off, works like a charm and looks seamless with them on. Really happy with how it's turning out.

I think he's angling for the whole "re-roll failed wound rolls" thing, and maybe even the additional attack for having both hands that way.
