To my eye, when it comes to wargaming, nothing looks worse than new paint and shiny armor. "Beat to hell" looks infinitely better than pristine. What sort of tricks and techniques does /tg/ use to model bullet holes, stress fractures, scorch marks, soot and grime?
Posting some good looking examples

You can do some nice rusty effects by painting the model metal, then using whatever rust techniques you like, so the whole thing is a rusty mess. Then mix up chunky salt and water into a paste, and apply that anywhere you want rust to show. Panel edges, door, steps, battering rams, whatever.
Once it's dry, paint the model like normal, from primer on up. Then when you're done, chip off the salt and you'll have naturally layered paint and an under-surface that's all corroded.
I'm on my phone so no pics, but there's some nice examples floating around. I think somebody did some warjacks that way, if that helps you search.

That's pretty brilliant!
