Is it possible for the Elder races to ever get their shit back together and rise to their old heights?

>Is it possible for the Elder races to ever get their shit back together and rise to their old heights?

In theory, yes, but as the setting is it's practically impossible, due to the constant threats the world keeps on throwing at them - the Dark Elves, Chaos invasions, Orcs and Goblins, Skaven - they can barely hold their own, let alone rise. With some serious help they could manage it, but that help's not likely to be coming.

Dwarves especially seem despondent about the state of things, since they have lost so much of their ancient empire and knowledge. Elves might feel the same way, but either they aren't admitting it due to pride, or it doesn't affect them as harshly since they've still kept control of their homeland without much loss.

The Warhammer roleplay thread isn't up so ill post here. Trying to set up a WHFRP game with some friends but dont have 3rd edition and the pastebin link dont work. Also i could use some pointers and tips about DMing a warhammer game. If any eager volunteers would be willing to DM for us i would also be eternally thankful.
>>
>>54159895
This IS the WHFRP thread, you're in the right place.

As for pointers and tips, it's hard to give you anything that would actually be helpful without knowing a bit more about what you're planning and what you want help with, specifically. Do you feel comfortable with the lore and 'feel' of the world?
>>
>>54159895
I DM 2nd, so I can give you some generalized setting tips.

-This is not D&D. Magic is "common," but most people outside a major city like Altdorf or Nuln will never see a real wizard. Consequently, magic is feared and despised, and not unfairly. That doesn't stop folks from visiting their wyrd to take care of cramps, though.

-People of the Old World are religious. They take blasphemy seriously. Names have power, and uttering an evil god's name is a bad omen.

-People of the Old World tend to be ignorant. Rumors conflict, common wisdom is a confusion of truth and nonsense.

-People of the Old World are fractious. There is little sense of the modern nation-state. Wissenlanders don't like Reiklanders don't like Ostlanders don't like Stirlanders. Religion is a part of this identity.

That could work and is a fair gag besides, just make sure to make the dwarf gruff, a pitiless haggler, and very sensitive to wrongs done to him.

Age of Sigmar fans/scholars: is AoS more or less comparable to 40k in terms of 'character power level' in general? The AoS RPG from Cubicle 7 will use a ruleset different from their WFRP, so I'm thinking, should the games be financially successful enough for them to get the 40k license too, is it realistic to expect the 40kRP could use AoSRP's system? I know this is all just speculation in the dark, I'm just wondering about the general power scale of the settings

So how do you want Daemons to work in TWW?

>Bele'cuck has to fight off four Daemon armies until Archaon summons them and they automatically confederate
>Bele'cuck must be defeated by any of the four armies at which point they confederate and launch invasions independantly of Archaon
>You must destroy the other three Chaos armies plus Bele'cuck and Archaon
>You may not play Daemons, they just get added to Archaon's army
>Glottkin
>>
>>54162202
Absolutely this.
With the ability to take over any race's territory in 2, you can play as Dawi or High Elves and always keep true to your alliance while kicking everyone else into the dirt and leaving Karl as the condiment in your oldfag sandwich.

Try the AoS thread, but I can tell you that GW is probably unlikely to give a company both of their big licences.
>>
>>54163311
Wait, isn't Cubicle 7 doing WFRP 4th Ed too?

Wait...
Wait...Jesus, please someone tell me WFRP 4ed and the AoS RPG are different things.

JESUS CHRIST SOMEONE TELL ME THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS
>>
>>54163339

They are two different things, but I mean they probably won't give one small company like C7 Fantasy, AoS and 40K. That's like 6 different books at this stage.
>>
>>54163355
If they've given them two, it sounds like NuGW to put all their balls in one basket. Plus it would be interesting to have all three systems be compatible.
>>
>>54163373

Well they've already said WFRP4E and the new AoS book will be using two different systems.

At the moment GW seems to just let companies bid on their IP, so it depends on whether C7 want to take it on but they don't seem to have shown any interest in 40K. I'm still convinced they were forced to take AoS along with the Fantasy licence, since we knew months in advance they'd made a bid and then it was only a month after the official announcement that we learned they were doing AoS as well.

Anyone got any tips for running a oneshot for a bunch of D&D, monster of the week etc players? None of us have played WFRP before and I've never GMed before, but I'm really keen to run it. I've read the core book and most of the supplements so I think I'm pretty good on the rules. The session is 4 hours long

Also how should I handle fate points and wounds and healing? I don't really want them to be slaughtered but I don't want it to be too easy.
General GMing tips are welcome too. No bully pls
>>
>>54163403
I've got my fingers crossed, but with one exception I've not been a fan of Cubicle 7s work.

I hope they don't lose money on the AoS gig though.
>>
>>54163432
If its a oneshot, don't worry about slaughtering them. It's better to focus on the story. Speaking of, if your friends like their combat I'd recommend running a fight heavy prologue - something like playing the villagers defending against a beastmen attack, no fate points. Have them get slaughtered, then cut to the adventurers turning up to the burning vilage.
>>
>>54163471

I mean worst comes to worst... it's back to 2nd edition.

Sure 2nd ain't perfect but there's nigh on endless amounts of house rules and fan made stuff to fill in any holes a GM/group doesn't like.
>>
>>54162213

Add them to the mortals of chaos, making demons a separate army was a mistake.
>>
>>54163501
Oh that's a cool idea actually! I might like to steal that. I've prepared a scenario but I was a bit worried it would be too convoluted if you or anyone was keen to CC it.

I mean I don't want to slaughter them all like kill them all an hour in and have them have nothing to do the rest of the evening. if I use fate points like the book they'll be alive, but still at 0 wounds which won't be very useful.
>>
>>54163622
>if I use fate points like the book they'll be alive, but still at 0 wounds which won't be very useful.

Use Fate Points like GM fiat - it takes them out of the situation, but doesn't remove the penalty.

EG: Guy falls down a hole and dies. Spends a fate point - instead of dying he gets snagged on an outcropping and needs rescuing. Just don't be a dick and have him fall again.

Another example - guy gets hit with a cannon and dies. Spend a fatepoint and instead of being killed, you've lost an arm but your friends find you after the fight.

If you're ever in the situation where your PCs are at 0 wounds and spending a fate point every turn, you're doing it wrong.

Also - having a combat heavy prologue that goes bad for the players is a quick and easy way to show them how dangerous combat can be.

I like the idea of the second option, because it seems fitting for Chaos - you have to fight against everyone else in order to gain the favor of the Chaos Gods by beating a champion they've set up for you. And it's a good way to make sure each Chaos faction is fleshed out, allowing you to go mono-god or a mixed force with equal effectiveness.

But, I would also like daemons to be added to Archaon's army, and in a very limited sense to Norscan forces (when they're fighting in Norsca, or in territory with enough Chaos corruption) perhaps as a series of RoR or maybe even summonable by sorcerers. Maybe even Beastmen with the same strict requirements. If units like Chaos Spawn, Giants and Manticores can get shared like that, I think it's fair, and it adds some variety to Chaos forces.

So, I'm probably going to be making a nurgle fluffed count as-Wulfrik the Wanderer for my Mono Nurgle WoC-army for which I'd love to get some pointers regarding what model to base him on and the fluff surrounding him. The reason for me wanting to make one is that I'm currently working on some Nurgle Marauders based on the red robed acolytes in my picture since I absolutely adore the way they look which goes double for the concept of a Nurgle Lord riding through his army while his clergy perform a moving religious ceremony around him.
In terms of fluff I want to make this not!Wulfrik of mine some sort of messianic figure who have allied with or tagged along with my army. I probably want him to be some sort of nurglish cult-leader which would explain we he would be constantly surrounded by hooded followers fanatically loyal to him. Besides that I've not thought of anything more.

Any input is greatly welcomed!

Wulfrik actually looks like a proper fantasy viking, which is the basis for the Norscan people. Vikings =/= Fantasy vikings.

The Kurgan meanwhile have, as far as I'm aware, always been depicted as a mixture of stereotypic horse nomads and Conan's Cimmerians. To say that they are (only) based on the Scythian peoples is thus not particularly accurate.

In that he has a beard. And furs. Wulfrik is about as far removed from real vikings as the Kurgan are from real central asian nomads.

I wasn't the one arguing that they're just Scythian anyway. They're obviously a mix of groups.
To go back to the Turkic argument from yesterday, many of the Kurgan tribes have names either lifted from real groups (The Dolgan are a real Turkic people) or very obvious borrowings (Khazags/Kazakhs)
>>
>>54169266
>Wulfrik is about as far removed from real vikings as the Kurgan are from real central asian nomads.
Nice strawman buddy. No one is claiming that the Norscan people are exports of real vikings. As I stated in the part you quoted, real vikings are not the same as fantasy viking. Pretty much the only thing the two have in common is that both are seafarers from northern regions.
It's extremely obvious for anyone who have read just a hint of Norscan fluff that the Norscan are fantasy vikings.

Josh Reynolds tried to answer fan questions about the dropped plots and give some resolution until GW gave him a Cease & Desist order.
His Skarsnik was Mork incarnate. He arrived at the final battle and cleaved his way through Chaos. After the death of Grimgor he became the supreme greenskin, Gork and Mork in one. He was one of the last beings to die, with his green horde actually gaining ground against the Daemons as the world faded to black.

What's the story with the Black Library hate? I've been out of the hobby for a long time, but I keep seeing people treat BL like it's different from GW. I thought BL was just the literary branch of GW?
>>
>>54178290
It's output is generally poor. There's a few good authors in the mix, but the majority of Bl writers are godawful. If I recall correctly, Reynolds was the author of the Bretonnian series, and it sucked donkey balls.
>>
>>54178343
But is BL canonically non-canonical, or is it just a case of not liking shit authors ruining a good setting?
>>
>>54178445
BL is probably the lowest grade of canon. It's the source with the most content and the least oversight.

Consider the following, I suppose: https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Black_Library#Is_this_Canon.3F
>>
>>54178588
Cheers, brotheranon. I suppose it can't be any worse than ET and AoS in the big scheme of things.

It's a little contentious to say, but I've always been of the mind that the truth of the Warhammer setting is whatever the group you play with chooses it to be. At the end of the day, that's what really matters. If I want to hop onto a Siberian Massage Imageboard and discuss what it would take for the Dwarfs to set up an underwater mining station, then the canonicity of whether that was even possible shouldn't matter.

Im building an empire army at the moment, but would also like to work on both simultaneously. Skaven would be fairly similar in terms of artillery, but I dig the overall lore and models. Don't go to the AoS thread, it's a full on shitshow.

Power level changes per faction as usual, but the setting is more magical. one of the recent novels takes place in a city where you can buy 'prophecies' via a special magical alloy that is used in the city as currency and the most important research subject. Some of the citizens get addicted to this and become junkies addicted to 'shimmerlings'

Another city is build in 2 realms/planes(fire and life) and features a portal that connects the two and is also used to have a river of lava flow from the fire realms to the life realms for industrial reasons.

However, humans are still humans and the empire soldiers still serve the cities as guards and soldiers(they are now organized into 'guilds').

Something that I really loved about playing Bretonnia, after suffering through far, far too many Skaeling raids and a Chaos invasion that struck down my Norscan territories, was surviving and building a large and strong enough army to begin hitting the Norscans back in their own territory - and that's something Bretonnians are a lot better at than defending.

If it weren't for how difficult it is to survive there, how little I understood of the scale of the place and their remaining territories, and a war with Estalia and the Wood Elves brewing that turned my attention south, I probably would have smashed the whole faction, maybe the Vargs as well, instead of just razing three or four settlements. As it was, I got to feel good about leaving them broken for so long that it took them many, many turns to start trying shit again. It was a pity at that point it was so late in the game that I had little else to do than finally finish the main campaign.

Why? I love Middle Earth for its mythology and the stories and the history. But I can't help but think Warhammer beats it as a setting for a video game. There's just more stuff. More monsters, more factions, more reason for conflict that isn't purely good/evil. Whenever someone tries to inject new material into the setting it sticks out like a sore thumb.

This. Besides really close combat there's a reason that the spear have been with humanity since before civilisation. It's just really fucking good at its job for its price. Modern militaries of today have even seen use of it in the form of the odd bayonet charge.

Its because he likes variety and hates there being a right or wrong answer to anything. He's the reason there's more Space Marine chapters than there are individual codexes.

He's a strong proponent of local canon being the only real canon and what's in the books having as much meaning as the background to a starter set.

Hell, his version of Storm Of Chaos would have ended with a suggestion that players go back and try it out with Valten leading Chaos and Archaon being Sigmar reborn and lore coming after being that both died and not giving a concrete answer to the events so however it went in your community is not retconned.

I don't really see the problem with that. He's not saying that khorne daemons can't be red, he's just making it so it can also be yellow. Sure, it'd be more frustrating if he painted Pink Horrors green and Blue Horrors orange, but I'm glad that he's leaving room for variety without cutting off ideas entirely.

Something that I've found depressing about most of the settings I like these days is that I no longer trust who is in charge of the canon to do a good job. And comparatively, a fluid 'there is no real answer' is a lot more comforting than the idea of what I like being 'ruined' forever because some new idea has retconned an old one I like, or has made it so a headcanon I like no longer matters.

but what should I give him between a greature rune of speed (ASF) or a greater rune of vengeance ( weapons deals 1d6 wounds with every hit)?

I figure that him, being a slayer, would not last against a WE on a dragon, so i'm torn. Should i make him strike first, and hope he lands enough hits to kill the dragon before getting eaten, or do i trust him to resist a first attack in exchange of a greater chance to kill off the dragon in a single turn?

>>
>>54185972
>>54185979

I think you guys take the dying race too literally, they mean their power is waning compared to the lesser races, the dominion of Elves is ending, they're not the power they once were and are now comparable to the Empire, Cathay and other races that were seen as inferior.
>>
>>54186232
Don't forget that now they have to rely on other races to support them since they can no longer afford to send armies everywhere. Instead of doing all the trade with Cathay themselves, they have to help humans maintain it and make sure they get a slice. Instead of holding off the armies of Chaos as they once did, they have to let the Empire do it. It's not just that their power has waned, but they have to rely on the more youthful races.

Just like how the Dwarves, for all their grudging, probably wouldn't last half as long if there weren't humans regularly fighting off Orcs as part of a crusade, or taking the brunt of some Waaagh running across the Empire or Bretonnia.
>>
>>54186207

That's what they are doing and it works mostly. It doesn't make Ulthuan unreachable, but I can imagine even a fleet reaching the shores unorganized and all over the place helps them a lot. As the other anon stated, only the dark elves seem to manage to get there on a regular basis.
>>
>>54185615
Yep.

GW mentality mind you is the story sells the models, the models are the company focus.

So it doesn't need good writing. Instead of trying to put out the best product possible and attach their name to it, its just commission work for a client done professionally but without passion. "Its just entertainment, its not supposed to be Shakespear".
>>
>>54186124
>Norscan raiders get to Ulthuan all the time

Cute bullshit. They almost never make it to the shore. They get fucked by elf navy, sea monsters or sharp rocks. Norscan raids on Ulthuan are incredibly rare to the point they are no danger.

Grom was literally the only case greenskins ever made it to Ulthuan because insane luck happened.

The only real danger are Dark Elves.
>>
>>54185945
The Elves were never really intended to leave their island. They were a work of art designed by the supreme creator, to adorn the crown of the world.

Humans are Eru's story in print, Elves are the beautiful gilded artwork in the margins, Dwarves are the binding.
>>
>>54185015
I'm sorry for yelling and cursing at you, I just had a shitty day.
Pistoliers use pistols, these guys have bows. If you play ninth the Empire can use horse archers so they're perfect for that. Other than that the Bretonnians have Yeoman Peasants on horses, that's a good use for then.
>>
>>54186791

This is only true for later editions. You know, when WHFB started going to shit and bleeding players.

I still remember stuff like half of magic colleges heads being hot chicks. Then the 40k people started writing Fantasy and it all became retarded grimderp mess for 14y old fags.

>>54186232
Naw, they're literally dying out.
Read up about Yvresse. Tiranoc is just the one with waning power.

Hell, a Chaos Champion gives Morathi a long speech about humans being the maggots in the corpse of the Elven world while she rolls her eyes.
>>
>>54186623
Sorry anon, that's how it works. All the sorceresses are ritually married to Malekith, so they can't marry or bear children. Probably part of his way to control the use of magic in his lands, since he doesn't want a male magic user casting him down.
>>
>>54186073

>>

Books say how they are dying out and then few pages later they talk about high elf military being the most powerful on the planet. And then describe apocalyptic battles with giant elf armies.
>>
>>54186847
Actually Eltharion intentionally was luring the greenskin population of the world to Ulthuan. So its likely that many would reach there barring ET.

Successful Chaos raids happen because Dark Elves or a Champion lead the way.
>>

>>

Exactly.

Because there's as many as the plot demands.

There's so few left and are at constany war that there will only be a few more generations at most, thinks Tyrion as he leads ten thousand armed Silver Helms into a charge against Dark Elves.

There's probably more based on the individual noble houses, but it makes sense to me that those three would be behind just about everything indirectly, even feuds between two noble families under their control (to weaken both and keep them under their thumb). It adds to the sense of paranoia around the Dark Elf race and how futile their backstabbery is overall, since as soon as someone more powerful comes around they have to swallow their pride and grovel.

It still doesn't make sense at all if you look beyond the surface, but they're still a more interesting antagonist than 'lol Chaos wins forever in the end!'
>>
>>54188157
Eh, its the problem with modern GW writing.

Its all about the posterboy.

"Fuck your OC faction, play Von Carstein. Fuck your OC, they're a redshirt Von Carstein, Mannfred killed the others."

It doesn't fit the vision of the loremasters, so it must be forbidden and more must be added to wank their own favorites.

Ulthuan needs more edge honestly.
Maybe not Melnibone levels, but it's just a little bit too utopian for my liking. Taking a few more leaves from the Ancient Greece book might be a good way to do it.

>>
>>54188651
They needed to dial back the dying race trope a lot and decentralize.
In most BL books we get a lot of bullshit about how High Elves are mostly on the outs because they're so obsessed with politics that they screw themselves, but we only see that in the War of the Beard and maybe Aislinn skullfucking Marienburg once before saving it and everyone forgiving him.

We need Eataine fucking up those Caledorian bastards and a heresy of Hoeth in Saphery going to war with Isha devotees in Avelorn. An election crisis for Tiranoc and Chrace having to invade the damn Warp itself to stop the fucking Daemons from coming down from the ski lodge.

Some serious War Of Rose shit going on.
>>
>>54188651
That's mostly just the inner kingdoms. In the outer kingdoms they have the goddamn shadow realms.
>>
>>54188651

Go away 40k fags. If anything rest of WH world needs less edge.
>>
>>54188735
That anon was being misleading.
Priestley said that's the colors that he likes for them because they pop when you take a picture of them, not that it should be the canon color. Priestley probably dislikes them only being green, but its against his writing philosophy to say anything is wrong.

On an unrelated note it looks like Shieldwolf Miniatures released a preview for their third Kickstarter. Looks like female Space Marines and girl Archaon.
>>
>>54188469
Bretonnian gank squads are going to fear the High Elves
>>
>>54188758
Less edge, more action.

Give High Elves back an Old World colony, heat up the civil war by giving Dark Elves a fortress and port in Nagarythe while High Elves have the same on southern Naggaroth, and progress the Eltharion VS green plot with a WAAAGH made up of smaller WAAAGHs all crossing the sea towards Ulthuan with a Grudge-avenging Dwarf fleet not far behind.
>>
>>54188075
There are lots of subfactions, as we see in the Malus Darkblade novels. It's just you don't argue with 3 of the oldest and most powerful living elves in the world. Not directly, anyway.
>>
>>54188651
They already keep slaves.
>>
>>54188075

This is the main problem with GW writing really. They focus on heroes that have minis and ignore everything else.
>>
>>54188758
If you don't like edge, go back to LOTR or AOS.
>>
>>54188917

What? High elves keep slaves?
>>
>>54188932

Earlier editions had less edge and they were much better. When Fantasy started getting 40k levels of edge everything started going to shit.
>>
>>54188695
WFRP 1e and 2e are roughly similar, 3 is its own monster.

In WFRP 2 (the best one), to play a necromancer you could do a large variety of career paths. the most direct would be Apprentice Wizard -> Journeyman Wizard and then take Dark Lore (Necromancy), though you COULD go Hedge Wizard -> Witch -> Warlock and then grab Dark Lore (Necromancy).

Note that Dark Lores, while more powerful, have a terrible price (higher risk of Tzeentch's Curse, worse side effects, good chance of being murdered by anyone who catches on).
>>
>>54188941
They're referred to in the Gotrek & Felix novels, where Gotrek sneeringly mocks some high elves for the practice. And he's not just conflating them with the druchii.

I believe it has been largely abolished in Ulthuan, however.
>>
>>54188758
It's just that a lot of the other races have interesting internal conflicts. The Empire is very fragmented with barons warring against one another and cults gnawing away at the roots of society. Bretonnia has a shiny facade hiding a huge class divide, the Dwarfs have grudges and clan feuds written down in blood.

The High Elves had one big falling out with unambiguously good guys and bad guys. They all seem to live the lives of nobility with clean white robes despite having no slaves or serfs to work for them. There's politicking, but they remain united.

I should mention that I think Dark Elves could do with a bit of edge-removal at the same time. They could do with a bit less baby-eating and a few less spikes and the High Elves could do with a bit more surprisingly-bloodthirsty Khaine worship and a Peloponnesian War equivalent.
>>
>>54189026
How would High Elves have slaves when nonelves aren't even allowed anywhere but a small disctrict in Lothern?

Also where does Gotrek get off giving High Elves shit when Dwarfs keep Goblins as slaves?
>>
>>54170336

Indeed. Hobgoblins too are mongol-like, see Oglah Khan Wolfboyz
>>
>>54189123
>Also where does Gotrek get off giving High Elves shit when Dwarfs keep Goblins as slaves?
Because they are goblins.
>>
>>54189145
Dwarfs don't keep goblins as slaves, or if they did, that was added after the G&F novels. (Of course, dwarfs don't count the dawi zharr as dwarfs.)

It's an intensely stupid idea, too, since goblins are worthless labor.

High Elves would probably be more interesting if they were more British Empire and less fairy tale Atlantis.

Other races living on Ulthuan as slaves/2nd class citizens would be interesting.

Or maybe make Dark Elves more like that instead of being some blood bathing retards.

I liked how NGNL did elves as an expansionist empire and largest nation on the planet. More settings should do that.
