Either you're so small and useless that no one notices you seceded (In which case you get steamrolled by the first threat that rolls by), or you're important enough to bring back to heel immediately using the full force of the Imperium, which will force you to make stupid deals and compromises to survive. Secession is a sucker's game.

You might be able to secede with a chunk that's big enough to protect itself, but too isolated to attack easily.

Honestly the only way you are going to pull that off is if your planet is such an insignificant blip that no one even notices that you've stopped paying your tithes. Anything less than that and the Imperium is going to show up in force and take their planet back from you. honestly even if your planet IS an insignificant blip with a barely noticeable tithe, that's just going to buy you time, so you better arm-up for one hell of a fight. What's more, if by some miracle you manage to keep the Imperium at bay long enough for them to lose interest in you, all that means is that NOW you get to face all the enemies of the Imperium, but without the aid of the Imperium.

So what exactly did you "win" by removing yourself from the Imperium?
