Okay, /tg/, I need some advice. I wanted to run some samurai/ronin adventure sort of stuff in the vein of things like Zatoichi, the Samurai trilogy, Samurai Executioner/Lone Wolf&Cub, etc... My first thought was the just take L5R and strip away the setting specific features... and the magic... but that left me with a flimsy looking basis for character creation, so I tried to fill out some of the gap with a kind of combo system, and now I'm knee deep in "so what I thought I'd do for my game was tweak Pathfinder, and..." And I'm convinced I've fucked this up and need to try again from scratch.
BUT before I do, surely someone else must have some experience with trying to do something like this. Or in the very least with running a samurai themed/Japanese historical fiction game before; If you have, what systems or fixes were your solution to this problem?
Check out the game Sengoku. The rpg itself uses Fuzion which is pretty hit or miss, but it's a solid source book for the setting and a generally well regarded game. It might be the kind of thing you want.
