I think that execution is more important than premise, certainly for nearly all the examples here. I'll agree that 100% purefags are a pretty bad premise, but might work as a foil for other PCs.
I think it's important not to get too much tunnel vision here. I'd say there's more to a hero than what motivates them to do good. You've got 'was coerced into being good' as Mid-tier, but if that character also had (for example) an engaging, nuanced revenge plotline and was tied to the setting by NPCs who matter to them (family, mentor, spouse, etc), that could be a more interesting character than the Paladin type from your High-tier.
