>What to the naked eyes of the explorers resembles a barren, sterile moonscape. When seen though cameras or other artificial means, everything appears biologically alive. Craters become orifices, mountains turn into limbs, etc. No way of figuring out if the artificial or the natural perception are incorrect.

>Emerging from the portal, an explorer find an island, facing a few rodent-sized creatures running away from them. Then they get hit by a sailing ship the size of a bathtub toy.

On the first expedition, one of the explorers died. On the second, all the native life had changed and had copies of the dead astronaut's face somewhere on their bodies.

I still think that for the first few 'manned missions' your team should essentially be Death-Row inmates. People sent to die, or maybe start a new life somewhere out in the stars. Or the places that lurk between them.

As far as gameplay goes, just play that out as normal. Players earn XP and the next manned mission is that little bit better. After X amount of levels - once players have a firm grasp of the setting and what sort of character they want to play in relation to the setting - you bring in your main characters, already a little leveled up and with the players a little wiser to the setting and the game.

Also, over time you have to have the Cheyenne Mountain complex become more and more non-euclidean. Rooms appearing where they shouldn't be. Hallways that loop on themselves. Strange echos and footprints left in tiles like they were clay.
