An alien race has developed a "terraforming tool" that can amplify or reduce the magnetosphere of a planet. While they have successfully used this several times to expand to previously barrens rocks now capable of holding an atmosphere and supporting life, rumors say that they have no qualms about using it on inhabited planets, reducing the magnetosphere and letting the residents cook to death before restoring it and setting up a new home for themselves.

Except humanity is isolated on a worldship drifting through the dark space between galaxies.

If it consumes other planets or if alien races terraform worlds in this region of dark space, that implies there are planets out there, or at least other worldships.
