No, but it depends on the system.

Anything with an hp track or similar combat focus it'd be untenable.
If it's narrative or scene focused you'd be fine.

His powers pretty good if generic now that hes learned how to use it without casting from hit points.

yes. in fact, that was a big part of why eraserhead told him he couldn't be a hero; a PC that cripples himself after a single attack is basically useless if he doesn't have some other kind strength to replace combat potential.
