BBEG is a meme, and like most memes it doesn't have much of a shelf life. The old joke has faded, and now it seems like people are just finding it weird for people to be so fervent in holding onto it.

He had some really bad deal with demon so she could give birth to children, and part of sacrifices is his debt. And those rituals are fucking slaughter. And last his 1\3 free time he spends trying to fully subjugate his goons to his will to the point of absolute devotion, and drinks\gets high\talks about deep or everyday shit with his right hand. They are almost friends except the villain is somewhat "i don't care about anything but power and my closest people" and right hand is a weary mercenary who is somewhat chaotic neutral leaning to chaotic good.

Third villain just tries to do something with crippling depression. Despite being sort of nazi, she tries to understand other cultures, but gets disgusted everytime. Something like "Humans\hivemind trees\sentient funghi seem to be ok. Oh, no, fuck they don't, what a waste, it's annoying how we need to purge even more scum now".

Fourth has no rest. Never.

Fifth is trying to ensure that his hegemonical human-centered theocracy won't fucking dissolve, and spends most of the time working with backup plans involving economics, education and shit. His family is destroyed by his "I need to work 40 hours-a-day" approach, and when he isn't drunk as hell, he tries to comfort his only son.
