Ok, a really rough mashup of what I'm trying to do for a Decimator. I can see already that I'll need to either somehow bulk up the legs or find more suitable ones, and I'm not sure on the head yet. Thoughts?

Hey guys,

finished my very first Greenstuff project yesterday and wanted to share it with you.
Was kind of a pain in the ass cause one arm broke apart from the rest while I was working the pattern in, so I had to finish both parts, let them dry and than connect them.

What do you think? Any tips for future Greenstuff works.

btw. next profect will be sniper in full ghillie suit
>>
>>54085031
Looks comfy.

Cloaks are awesome, it is just a pity that you are essentially covering up a large portion of a model putting one on.

Frontal shots?

Finished it today but forgott to take a picture.
>>

>Any tips for future Greenstuff works.
Nothing specific in reply to the photo, just as a general tip:
Work in layers. Makes it a whole lot easier.
for example with this you could first add the cloak with a flattened piece of GS, let that dry, add the fold and volume where you like it, maybe cut the edges straight once that is cured and then move on to do the texture and finally the hood.

Takes longer, but gives you more control ultimately. Also means the working time for each bit you are trying to do is a bit longer. Don't have to rush yourself that much.

I think this is especially useful for things that are standing/hanging free or are otherwise likely to move if you manipulate them. Stuff that benefits from having an armature.
>>
>>54084762
yea I think it looks more like actual text now than thick lines.
>>
>>54085056
Thank you.

>it is just a pity that you are essentially covering up a large portion of a model putting one on.

Yea thats kinda true.
But the bitz with the weapon and arm allready had a cape that covered most of the model and torso/legs are standard guard bitz, so nothing to spectacular is covered.
>>
>>54085072
The rifle could use some camo. Some Ghillie stuff wrapped around the barrel could work, or even just a camo paint job on the black parts.
>>
>>54085101
>Work in layers. Makes it a whole lot easier.

I will do this next time.
Did the whole cape at ones (without the hood).
The Greenstuff started drying halfway through so I hurried up and broke the arm.
>>
>>54085170
Not him but keep the GS wet while you work. Just a bit of water. It won't harden as fast and make smoothing easier.
>>
>>54084762
God that looks twenty times better anon. Good work
>>
>>54085128
I was thinking about some kind of camo netting.
Any Idea how to do that (with or without greenstuff) ?
>>
>>54084802
Looks pretty nice.

Maybe go for a smaller head, this way the legs will not look as tinny as they look now.
>>
>>54085228
It would be hard to do proper netting in the sense of having holes in it. You could make some really thin strips of GS and wrap them around and etch a weave pattern or something on them. Or do the same style as the suit.
>>
>>54084811
>>54084802
I like the proportions and silhouette generally, but the head is kinda screwing with the aesthetic. It's a cool shape on its own, but it says bionicle or infinity while the rest of the bitz say grimdark

what I did for my German sniper model was cutting some really thin strips of tissue paper, wrapping it around the gun barrel and then soak it in watered down PVA. worked fine.
>>
>>54085228
stretch some bandages (I think americans call it gauze?) out or cut them vaguely into shape
>>

I feel weird for saying this but I think this looks way better than the FW model. The silhouette and proportions are great, you just need some work tying the parts in together. The head needs more baroque trim, as do the legs, as well as actual talons on the toes.

I fucking love the idea of proper daemon engines created from scratch as being these lanky, super fast, super efficient murderbots because the Dark Mechanicum are able to optimise the shit out of their designs, as opposed to the dogmatic AdMech.

Now, it is some good work, but if I may, using gaze (bandages) is much mucb easier, and time saving. Just unwind it to jave a single layer of gaze, use washes on it before putting it onto the model. There was a tutorial with a guardsman, can't remember where, should jave saved it. The result it was pretty good.

Ok, posted this a few threads ago and didn't really get anything.
I got some metal painboys a while back and the first one turned out really good, the thing is I just don't know how I should go about painting this guy.
His head just fucks with the color scheme I had going for all my orks and I dont know if I should just straight up paint him red and white or something else entirely. Any input on this would be helpful.

They're sculpted on the mini which helps a lot. That said my masking is almost as good, which I'm pretty proud of.

The thumbnail made me think it was based off that one Evangelion monster with the ribbon arms
>>
>>54086326
I thought so too and I actually hit it with another tiny highlight of silver/gold mix on the very peaks of the coils. It also doesn't help my desk lamp is bright as FUCK so the bronze trim looks might brighter and shinier than it really is, when in reality there's a pretty significant difference between the gun and trim. I'll take some more pics in natural light tomorrow.

Trying to do a Weeping Legion with more old blood stains and other stuff leaking from wounds, how is it so far? I'm kind of considering using dried blood and recent blood ala Blood for the Blood God in the holes/closest part to cracks and wounds since it doesn't seem like Nurgle's Rot shows up well on the main armor color. I could also do maybe a The Cleaved style of brown and dark green leaking from armor parts. I also think that highlighting all of the small pieces Pallid Wych Flesh might be detrimental to how dirty other parts look so I've only highlighted a few spots that color but should I go for the whole thing coverage wise?

Also don't worry I'm getting rid of that hideous piece of sprue still left on the backpack I still can't believe I missed the damn thing.

I've been looking at the new Reiver Marines and was wondering if it would be possible to convert them into some kind of counts-as for Kataphrons. Add beep boop robot heads, fuel tanks, mechanical parts, have them have gun arms etc. So rather than tank men they're Big Marine sized Kastellan style things.

Is this a good/bad idea?

I'm doing my newer bases with fine, rocky basing sand, accented with static grass or grass tufts. For me, though, that means gluing the sand on *before* priming. That'd be a huge risk for you on such nice paint jobs.

Maybe take the easy way out?

I want to try some weirder experimental ideas on the others for afflictions and deformities.

> cracked skin
I've got Martian iron earth texture paint. I was thinking doing that Duncan thing he does on lava bases. Except gore coloured underneath, then texture paint, then quickly paint Rakarth flesh over the top.

> mold and heavy fungus,
glue short modelling grass onto parts of model, then cut short, then paint whites and greens like mold

> splitting in half
I'm going to saw a model down the middle. Then half- dry some pva glue with a hairdryer, then rub the two sides together with glue then pull apart, like the model will be having strands of gore between the two sides.
What other stuff comes to mind?

Oh ok, so you have white, red, green and gold on your models, white and red being the predominant colors here. Your scheme is pretty bright, so you need some dark colors on the base to contrast it.

I think the best option would be to make black bases, like ashes. I think there is even a texture paint for that. After they dry you can lightly drybrush them with some medium grey.

I was also thinking about that cracked skin technique of yours, but I think it won't work on small miniatures, the coat would be too thin. But it way work on tanks and such.
Alternatively, what about using it together with nurgle's rot on bases, to give the impression of mucus oozing from the cracked terrain?
>>
>>54089235
I've tried that. The problem is Nurgles rot is a really glossy even surface when dry, so when you use crackle paint, it won't hold. It dries but then half of it just flakes off.

the crackle paints just won't stick to Nurgles rot the way they would with flat normal paints.

As you can see from the picture in >>54091778, it was harmless - a Mk I Rhino, RTB-01 beekee sergeant, and 3rd Edition Space Marine with a flamer came out just fine. Just make sure it has *NO* acetone in it. I reserve the acetone (and Goof-Off) for the extra-tough jobs ... and metal *only!*

Thought it'd make a nice distinction for the Primaris guys. Not sure if I'll do all the Primaris section in this black scheme, so I started with the real standout guys to see if it looked good.

Currently the colors progress by rank in that Sergeants have bone helmets while officers have bone pauldrons also. However I think this leaves the basic marines looking too much like Ultrasmurfs.

The right hand skull is pretty boss. I think you might have underdone it with the facial highlights. Maybe cut the shadows down a little more for the face at least. I don't think you're done with the staff or the hat, so I won't judge yet.

The color palette is pretty muted as a whole, though. You may want to make the staff pop to make sure that a model like that isn't lost in the shuffle.
>>

>I don't think you're done with the staff or the hat
That is what still has to be done.

I will keep your advise in mind and use a little brighter wood for the stuff and so on.

I've had this guy in a box for years. I won him in a game but I've no idea where he came from. My younger self decided to paint over the top of what was already 2 paint jobs.

I want to strip all that paint off without damaging it and make him part of my new cults army. I'm in the UK. Whats the best product I can get off the shelf? Also where is this guy from?
>>
>>54100523

That model looks old enough to be metal, in which case the only thing that would damage it is stuff that would kill you anyway. Even if it's plastic, rubbing alcohol should be plenty safe for a short, 15-30 minutes soak and is one of the more powerful paint strippers without being overly toxic.
>>
>>54100593
This is my confusion. It is a plastic. Which is why I don't know where it came from. I thought it might be a space hulk model or something but its not.

I think he looks great though. If I can get him back to scratch I'm gonna try and do some work on him and make him an Iconward. Just concerned about damaging it as I'm not sure what it is!

What's the most Dwarven colour scheme you guys can think of?

I have all sorts, probably enough for a small Kings of War army. There's everything from modern Skull Pass plastics to old Marauder lead.

I'm thinking it might have to be the traditional Blue, with lots of silver and gold, to unify them.

Just do them two-tone and dunk them in some mid-grade wood stain. Those tiny details where the armor breaks and you see the muscle bits will highlight and therefore tone themselves.

>>Safety nerf gun tip orange

Use a slightly lighter blue maybe? The tone of the two colors is really discordant. The blue is a solid strong cool color, and your (white?) is a washed out bone color. It looks weird because their helmets look dirty while their armor looks clean.

Are you doing them in batches? IE, Prime them all, basecoat them all, wash them all, etc. Second, DO NOT take 8 hours on one dude unless it's someone important. You models might look poorer, but you'll actually get them on the table, and when you improve later there's always simple green and a toothbrush so you can strip them and go back to do a better job in less time.

Some Brit-anon showed us how the Wilko Paint and Varnish Stripper did not harm his plastic First Edition Space Marine scouts, which are made of the same material this model is.

>Also where is this guy from?

It's a First Edition plastic Genestealer hybrid. These earliest plastic models were meant to be used in expansions to GW's tunnel-fighting games like Space Hulk and Advanced Space Crusade, but it was only a very short time before they were integrated into the Warhammer 40,000 games and given roolz for their use there as well.

I use a cardboard box positioned on my bed, folded in a way to keep the paint from spraying onto my sheets. Have the windows and door open, letting the air in and leaving the room for about ten minutes whilst the paint sprays. As for coverage, try getting some more distance with your can. Planning how to assemble my DW kill team for a scenario with a friend, I wanted to make a Minotaur hoplite but I'm not sure about what to use for the shield. Classic combat shield is medieval and not hoplon-like, I have those old shields the Imperial spearmen in the old WHFB base set used, the ones with a lion head, but they seem a little too small. I have a spare Tau drone around that would be just the right size, but I'm not sure it would fit well.

Pic is to show the "front" of the shield in case I used it. Aside from obvious stuff like putting an imperial eagle or something I'm conflicted about that little gap.

If you check scibor, puppetswar or hasslefree you can just buy hoplite shields as bits.
Personally I think using a Tau drone is just gonna look like a Tau drone to any 40k play.
The least you have to do is close the panel lines to make it look like something other than a tau drone.
At that point you might as well just use a Lego antenna dish or something like that though. Or maybe a button in the right size.

>>
>>54107331
>lego antenna dish

Wouldn't even be that bad, I'd just need to file the dot. As I said the first choice is to use what I have around. I also had the chance to buy hoplite shields from anvil but I refrained because they came in packs of 5. The sigmarines ones anon mentioned are good looking too but agbain, I'd have to get a whole sprue for a single shield, as I have no plans to use any other like that (I have some combat shields from both command squads and vanguard veterans around, plus some storm shields from the DW sprue)

I'm using my current projects in mordheim and SWA as an excuse to use some stuff I had around for literally decades, and this scenario I'm coming up with is to have a friend try out the wargame proper after playing skirmishes, so it wouldn't even be that much of a problem to USE the drone I suppose, the paintjob and decoration is gonna cover a lot.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to say it like it's a bad thing.

Just meant to say it would be a completely smooth surface.
>>
>>54106797
They look pretty badass. They're for Khorne, right?
>>
>>54107530

Depends on what's on em.
>>
>>54107542
As it stands the main factor is size, surface is secondary as 40k shields, and 40k stuff in general, can also be quite busy or have some apparently random bits here or there.
>>
>>54107580

I just plan on painting stone textures on these bases. I bought my first Warhammer minis today. I have painted other minis before (mainly Bones) but I don't do anything special with their bases.
>>
>>54107640
Not the guy you were talking to, but imo it's pretty much always easier to prime them.
The only exception is when you use flying stands with clear bases. You can leave those unpainted or mask the transparent bits with tape.

In 99% of the cases you'll have the minis mounted on the base before priming anyway, so you are gonna do the mini and the base in one go by default.
And if you want to paint the bases separately, like say when you are working with resin bases, you should prime them too.

The only kind of base that doesn't really need priming is probably a flat disk covered with sand, like the renedra or warlord games bases.
Stuff like the GW bases and round lipped bases are better off primed as well, since you don't want paint chipping off of those.

Different guy

I've seen a lot of people gluing everything together before painting, versus painting by parts then gluing them together. Is there some sort of advantage to the former or is it just a thing people do?

Yeah sure.
Some miniatures may be harder to paint if you fully assemble them.
Common example for example would be and infantry miniature built from a multipart kit with a weapon across his chest. Depending on the kit it may be a good idea to leave the arm or the weapon off so you can paint the whole mini.

An instance where you may not want to put a miniature on a base before painting may be a guy wearing a cape that would be hard to reach from below or a creature walking on all fours. In those cases it's better not to mount the mini on the base before painting, but as I said 99% of the minis you are probably gonna paint for most wargames are gonna be regular footsloggers that you can just glue to the base first.

Hey /wip/,
I just recently stumbled upon paintingbuddha's tutorials on YouTube, thanks to some anon mentioning it on here. So,after realizing how shit I am at painting, I took it upon myself to improve my ways. I've got a couple of black Templar that I'm planning on painting (or at least, trying to paint) like Buddha...and damn, does it look like shit when I try. Any friendly anons around here that have any expierince/skill with this style of painting that could help me out abit or give me some c&c would be very welcome!

I think I've been ruined by that rainbow tzeentch that was posted earlier. The sky sharks look great but I really can't see them as tzeentch unless they look like they're on their way to a pride parade.
