I always wondered what would happen if you tried to breed jumping spiders by selecting for size and intelligence over the course of a few million generations

Do you think maybe there is some mad scientist out there with hundreds of spider cages filled with his experiments at producing long-lived, large, and intelligent jumping spiders?

I'd say it'd be pretty damn difficult to test for intelligence in any insect, and spiders naturally live such short lives that maintaining a breeding population would require an enormous amount of micromanagement.

firstly lets talk about species, since the care and lifespan will depend on that. Spiders are generally at the low end of the intelligence scale, and by that I mean they do not have memory or the capability to learn, they do not have emotions as we know them and are basically robots, drones who serve a purpose and do not deviate from their prepackaged instructions. HOWEVER there is one group that does, the 'portia' genus. the spiders are the most intelligent arthropod out there, they have memory, the capacity to learn and adapt their hunting techniques and hunt just like cats, unlike most spiders they also show the ability to be relatively social without ripping each others throats out, to alter a spiders brain chemistry to achieve any amount of intelligence would usually be unreasonable and take way longer than any of us will be alive but this genus has all the groundwork laid out for us already. I won't go into all the details of their intelligence here so you should look it up yourself. the point is portia spiders are our best bet but now we have to figure out how to care for them, this is the tricky part...

To put some perspective into how intelligent portia spiders are, they have been known in the wild to study and record the series of vibrations on another spider's web made by trapped insects, potential mates, or falling debris. The portia spider will then mimic the vibrations to attract the web's resident spider and lead it into an ambush. Portia spiders prey on other spiders, you see.

spiders of the portia genus are notoriously hard to care for, and by that I mean if your not a scientist specializing in arachnid intelligence, you probably have never owned a single one. we have the simplest problem being that they are very small jumping spiders which means you have to be careful with them escaping but that probably won't stop you. The first REAL problem is that these spiders are intelligent for a reason, they hunt exclusively other spiders, often many times their size. these guys employ the multiple advanced and complicated hunting techniques to outsmart are variety of differing spider species meaning that not only do you need a constant supply of other often larger spiders to feed your portia, these feeder spiders must also be fed and cared for so that they can spin their webs, become comfortable and open themselves up to attack from the portia. you will have to then constantly transfer spiders into the portia's habitat without disturbing them and then hope nothing goes wrong and the spider you're trying to feed doesn't get eaten itself.

since these spiders hunt this way they need relatively large enclosures despite their tiny size, meaning that the enclosure for just one takes up a frankly ridiculous amount of space. and this is all assuming you can get one, they are only found in certain places (generally Australasia) and are usually illegal to export, and if not noone is exporting them anyway because they don't make good pets, even if you do live in the area few people are selling them and they are very difficult to find in the wild.
>>
>>54080228
they're just weird looking. especially portia-frimbiata which is the species in the pic you posted
>>
Steal the Weavers from Perdido Street Station. They're huge, and able to use more than our 3 dimensions to get around. They tend to keep up a stream-of-conciousness ramble, and do incomprehensible things. One had a temporary obsession with scissors, and the only way to get it to talk to you was by giving it a pair of scissors which it would stick to a wall.

At one point it gathered up the protagonists and an enemy militia and teleported them to the sewer. When they arrived, they realised it had cut off one of each of their ears. The militiaman had turned to glass. The spider then sat down and materialised a chess set and tried to play chess with the frozen militiaman.

I love how fucking weird they are.

now lets assume you have found a way to pull this off, multiple times over, because you will need a large sample for this to amount to anything, you now need a way to test their intelligence before you breed them, but how? there main motivator is food so you could try using other spiders as bait but these bit spiders will not all spin their webs the same so you each hunt will be very different. another option is to design a very simple puzzle or maze halfway through the tank with your spider on one side and the sacrificial lamb on the other, but then you have to make multiple tiny, tiny puzzle on a ridiculously small scale and hope that they aren't to complicated. the third option is too have the spiders fast and have multiple portia up against each other and let them resort to cannibalism but you are going to lose a lot of valuable specimens that way.

lastly (although there are more things to consider but this is the abridged version)
>breeding
ya know the thing you asked about in the first place. although breeding spiders is difficult I see no reaqson why the portia genus would be anymore difficult to breed than any other samll spider (infact they are remarkably civil as far as spiders go) and the chance of them eating eachother is actually reduced so thats not the difficult part. the difficult part is once the spiders hatch there will be hundreds of them that you will have to seperate and care for individually, you will have to sacrifice (or atleast set free if their native to the area) most of them and also feed them other smaller spiders as they are only babies. some spiders can live up to 20 years but sadly these little guys will only live for a year and a half so breeding them based on their longevity may be a better idea. I think that covers the basics

Portia spiders have a lot of optically active nanostructures on their exteriors, which leads to them often not appearing to match up with the lighting conditions of everything around them, especially in these close up, high detail shots.

Sizing them up would remove one of their biggest and most interesting flaws: their need to freeze and calculate every thought due to their small bodies for complex brain. Also most jumping spiders would be a bit of the same considering they have to calculate every jump, an impressive feat for such tiny, non-mammal brains.
>>
>>54083658
removing that flaw is the whole point of the operation, increasing their size allowing for exponentially increased intelligence as they reach tarantula sizes as their brains clearly are better optimized than most.
>>
>>54080584
If you happen to come back, spideranon.
Within the realm of fiction, would adding lung-like organs to spiders help them grow to larger sizes?
How would they look if they became REALLY big? Considering the size limitations of the current "design"
>>
>>54084126
modified lungs would definitely help, the ability to take in enough oxygen is one of the major obstacles for large athropods, this is why ancient animals like the arthropleura grew so massive, because the air had a higher oxygen content back then (this was due to trees not yet having any specialized decomposers, trapping the carbon dioxide) however the second problem they face is that when you have an exoskeleton you have to molt to grow, this is already a delicate process with smaller animals a larger creature (on land) would have trouble not being crushed by the weight of their own skeleton during the molting process. this is why vertebrates became so large. if you can find a way around the dangers of their own shell you could presumably make them as large as you want (provide that their shells aren't too thick and heavy). However it should be noted that spider muscles work by pumping fluid through the joints like hydraulics (this is how our tongues and tentacles work) this takes a large amount of liquid and energy to work on a larger scale so unless they have ample food and water you may have to change their muscular system.

Holy shit, I got that out of a drawthread almost two years ago now. I've got the cleaner version if you want it.
>>
>>54084263
I should also mention the weight of their skeletons during molting is why the largest terrestrial arthropod never became quite as large as the largest aquatic arthropod, as the water would like help relive the pressure. this goes for vertebrates to which is why whales are so massive, the water helps support their weight.

>>
>>54084263
Well, spiders molt all their exoskeleton at once, right? Or at least most husks i've seen tend to be almost, if not, complete.
Other posibility might be that i never got to see partial molting because i wouldn't know what to look for.
But would having them constantly shed in small amounts help with this?

Alternatively they could be mostly softbodied with heavily "armored" plates protecting the most important areas instead of a complete exoskeleton. Maybe a rudimentary endoskeleton meant to offer suppor to the legs, not the articulations.

>Hydraulics
Okay, how about replacing the fluid with some sort of non-newtonian substance?
The liquid becoming harder when stress is applied, either by the spider internal valves or external struggle, would help it withstand force and weight. When it needs to move the limb again, it just eases on the pressure.
You can even get over one of the main problem of those kind of substances, namely losing their properties due to sedimentation, by having the spider simply recycle it as it would any bodily fluid.

Are there any science spiders? I have mad scientist spiders in my homebrew, and pictures of scientist spiders could help me visualize them.
>>
>>54084468
So, what i got so far is:
>A spider with a body the size of a large dog or a wolf, but the length of the legs make it harder to discern the actual size.
>Has a soft body with lumpy and fibrous-looking grey skin, protected by segments of thick chitin plates that have the width and function of wooden shields (Makes Steel weapons bounce or get stuck in them)
>When it curls into a spider flan, or whatever that thing that spiders do when hurt is called, the plates offer almost complete coverage of the soft parts
>It's body is dotted by holes that make a whistling noise similar to a person with too much mucus in their trachea
>Sheds dandruff-like particles the size of potato chips (yes, i am hungry) from its armor almost constantly
>Has small beady eyes that limit its vision, but are good enough for catching the movement of its natural prey, juvenile large bird monsters and the ocassional ungulate
>When in caves or darkness, it hunts by feeling vibrations
>Has very stiff movements when not lunging for prey, moving one or two legs at most at the same time. Its movement might remind one of a marionette

Thank you for your help, spideranon

Some spiders can live pretty long, actually. The real problem is that there's only so far you could increase their size before you're going to get some significant problems, and intelligence in turn is limited by the size.

I have nightmares with spiders too, but I don't hate them/want them dead. Stop being a fag.
Spiders are total bros, most (and I really mean about 99,9% of them, save a few australian ones) actively don't want to harm or be anywhere near humans.

I found out how docile they are when I stumbled on a tree and a particularly large specimen ("size of my hand" large, might have been either a tarantula or a wandering spider, based on what we have around here) fell inside my clothes, down the back of my neck. I nearly shat myself, but figured out not making any sudden moves would be for the best.
The spider actually just stayed put for a bit, then very kindly crawled out on her own and got back to the foliage as quickly as she could.

See, turns out most spiders are really tolerant in what they consider "being disturbed", as in "don't attack unless disturbed". A stupid giant headbutted her tree and then rather abruptly trapped her in a dark place, but she didn't even consider fighting back, and just wanted to get away as peacefully as she could.

Really, spiders are cute and shy things, I now consider getting a pet spider in the future.

thanks for the story anon, even in Australia the chance of being bitten is incredibly low. because no matter how venomous or aggressive a species is, it's still comparatively fucking tiny and probably mostly blind.
the pic is a sydney funnel web one of the most toxic (to humans) and aggressive species ever and after 13 years of living in the sydney area I've only ever come across one, and only when i accidentally disturbed its web, all it did was rear up and hiss. I just lowered the piece of wood I found it under and went on my way.

Oh but what I was talking about is how interesting it is that they can reach that level of inteligence, but it takes a toll on the time the spider has to think.

Yes it can think all these clever, spider hunting plans but as it stands it needs to stand completely still to think, for an hour or more. Its also the same with the jumping spiders, they have to actually calculate for a bit before they jump. Its just really interesting brain stuff and it made me truly realise how complex a human brain is.

I based my spiderfolk off exactly that, they're great thinkers and such, but their biggest flaw is that if they think to hard they're gonna be standing there for hours to days at an end.
>>
>>54084468
Would some kind of gas work in place of the fluid you mentioned, spider-anon? Maybe the musculature is a series of tubes that inflates and deflates using an internal, organic ventillation system, using small vents on the better protected parts of the body. It would mean less weight than a fluid, and it would make molting much easier (spider just flexes until it brakes off).
>>
>>54085627

Here in America we don't have much in the ways of scary spiders.

Black Widows are famous but not aggressive.
Brown Recluses are getting famous but even less aggressive.
Tarantulas are pretty much harmless to people and truly not aggressive.

But in South America there's perhaps the most aggressive spider on the planet, the Brazilian Wandering Spider, a Spider of extreme aggression and dangerous (but not life-threateningly so) venom.

I'm interested to hear if you have any idea why it is so aggressive? It surely couldn't see humans as prey, and it doesn't seem to be a normal spider behavior to preemptively attack other dangerous predators many times their size.

I have no idea why the Brazilian wandering spider is so aggressive but the fact that the funnel web is so agressive makes even less sense since their venom is only effective against primates and primates (humans more specifically) have not been in Australia long enough for the venom to evolve to especially. Besides that there still isn't any known advantage to being so dangerous to humans.
>>54092935
basically, but the spiders would not necessarily use wits to take on their own species, it may just come down to strenght/speed.
>>54087039
the folds or "wrinkles" arent nessecary for intelligence, birds are known for their intelligence, especially corvids and parrots and their brains not only smooth but lack a neo-cortex as we know it (they likely have something analogous to it though)

spider silk is remarkably strong (comparable to steel) and flexible, in the real world it has few uses because you can't really milk a spider, in a world with intelligent and/or giant spiders this silk would be incredibly useful especially for armor and bullet proof clothing.

Too bad they don't have good grasping appendages.
They test mice, octopi, and crows by giving them environments or objects to manipulate to get to a source of food. Open jars, bend metal into hooks, scoot wheeled stairs, all kinds of neat things.

I'd imagine these spiders could probably solve similar puzzles for food, the only issue being, they can't really like... move things. They can't grab, only twiddle.
>>
>>54080378
>another option is to design a very simple puzzle or maze halfway through the tank with your spider on one side and the sacrificial lamb on the other

>>"There are, though, many variations on the theme and many surprising aspects. For one thing, salticids do not necessarily follow a straight path in approaching prey. They may follow a circuitous course, sometimes even a course that takes the hunter through regions from which the prey is not visible. Such complex adaptive behaviour is hard to reconcile with an organism that has such a tiny brain, but some jumping spiders, in particular some species of Portia, can negotiate long detours from one bush down to the ground, then up the stem of another bush to capture a prey item on a particular leaf. Such behaviour still is the subject of research."

Sounds like a maze to me.

The shadows in dreams only chase you as fast as you flee. You cannot escape the truth, nor yourself, meaning that no matter what exact thing they represent, running from and rejecting those problems instead of facing them is an inherently futile effort.

Not one, but I do possess one. I shall share my observations.

It is not prehensile. It cannot be moved under its own power, due to not possessing any proper musculature. It's basically just flesh, blood vessels and a urethra.

When erect, however, it can be moved in one direction (up) through tensing muscles in the lower abdomen (around-about in front of the bladder). This is the extent to which a penis can move, and as a result, it cannot be considered prehensile, and certainly not as prehensile as a cetacean's.

I hope this has been illuminating.
