Please, it's all about lizard beasts.

Its not that dinosaurs aren't distinct enough, but they are not going to be frequent enough occurrence to care about mechanically.

The BEAST type on the other hand has tons of variety, great cards prior to Ixalan and occurs with enough frequency that its worth caring about mechanically. Same applies to lizard to a lesser degree.

The thing is avoiding Ixalan dinos from being forever stuck in a parasitic bubble of suck without support for the next 15 years.

Those dice have already been cast though.

Well, I'd argue that certain dinos are more akin to birds than others.

Its just that the birds and lizards sharing such a strongly related common ancestry that picking bird or lizard for each particular casecan be tought.

Though sometimes its easy too. Sunwing dino?, Bird Beast. Verdant Sun's Avatar?, Lizard Beast. And so on.

The biggest squandered opportunity here probably is that they could have cared about the Beast type for Ixalan block and then given support to Birds and/or Lizards next block. More types means more interactions after all.

Muraganda does have dinosaurs, yeah.

Although going there is pretty iffy, as MaRo does not appear to be wild about designing for a vanilla-focused plane and the Pteroglyphs kinda mean that's what people expect there.

I do think that they're probably going to find excuses to make smaller tribes like Aetherborn and Dinosaurs show up on multiple planes if the fans like them, though. Certainly they've mentioned they plan to have Satyrs on other planes and on Theros Satyrs were mostly a tribe because they were kind of like goblins and elves at the same time.

I can see this working on a creature toolbox kind of deck, heavy in yard interaction. Maybe a Naya version of Delirium or just eternalize / embalm / cicle. In that case the deck could be jeskai control.

I can see this working well with the eternalize blue Naga Wizard, the one with the loot effect.

Not really upset about it desu, I'm hype for dinos and I love the south American flavor, I just think the set could be stronger if it didn't give dinosaurs their own type and instead seeked more cohesive interactions not only within itself, but past sets.

The thing is, nu-magic isn't so bad. Even the last few years we have been getting some pretty cool cards. But the problem with nu-magic is that it tries to distance itself from MTG's past rather than building upon it. If only the new sets were built so they gave some small measure of support to old and future sets they would find new relevance, since otherwise irrelevant cards that might not find a place in standard might revive an old deck that never fully clicked and breath new life into it. It could be done without jeopardizing a set's mechanical identity too.

Admit it, being able to make a beast / dinosaur deck out of an Ixalan / onslaught block mish-mash would be pretty fucking kickass. I know because it was kickass for me when SoI/EMN came out and I could finally build the perfect Spirit deck I've been trying to build since fucking Kamigawa came out.

I always found the Beast creature type to be a little bit more inclusive than it ought to be. Let's be completely honest here though, if they actually did a set with dinosaurs in it as a major theme and they just labeled them beasts, it'd be considered one of the biggest flavor fails ever and would be a massive shitstorm. It'd scream missed opportunity. People fucking love dinosaurs, a lot more than they love the generic codifier "beast". There's definitely an argument to make about cross-block synergy, but most players simply haven't played that long. The beast deck I had back then pretty much already was perfect for me (massive timmy shit back then).

Really my only problem at the moment with nu-magic is it's disproportionate focus on creatures, or rather it's powering down of answers. I don't mind creatures being strong as long as I have proper ways to deal with said strong creatures and that is currently sorely lacking. And the entirety of BFZ made me seething with rage, but that's a different story I suppose. WOTC has shown awareness of their mistakes and we're headed in the right direction in my opinion.

Honestly, I'd run both kind of how Tron runs some Ugins and not just Karn. But I think Nu-Bolas is actually pretty damn decent. The discard plus means you will always win an attrition battle, the cast plus has nice loyalty build up and can randomly give you the game if you hit a wincon (which I love when it happens). The ultimate also completely blows the opponent out of the water and Bolas can even finish the opponent off through the minus' direct damage.

The card would have a more consistent performance if the cast was from your own deck rather than the opponent's but its still a really powerful card.
