But Tarot began as another card game, anon. It was just co-opted by religious weirdos, that doesn't take away the original intent.it's just that the mystical stuff is more fun to talk about
Are there any systems that use Tarot cards in interesting ways?
>>54055241
Ravenloft... DMG? Has guidelines for if the GM wants one of the PCs to get a Charokka(which is basically Ravenloft specific not!Tarot) reading. But I don't remember any that actually use Tarot as a part of the game.

Hi.
>>54054878
The Devil really is an underrated card.
A lot of people look at It and treat it as the "big mean evil" card, but it's a lot more then that. It's aspects of passion, bondage, and addiction are completely overlooked, along with it's supreme sexual aspect.
>>54054903
What about Persona refrences?
>>54054878
It's The Tower.
>>54055241
Anima: Beyond fantasy has them as Summons. Normal and Reversed. World Reversed is fucking vicious. Requires you to fail at life, and even fail to make a pact with it.
But when you manage to summon it, it causes EVERYONE to fumble literally every roll they make for a period of hours.
Standard Wheel of Fortune is also pretty weird in that it randomly uses one of the other non-reversed Arcana, depending on what you roll.

After reading Tim Powers' "Last Call" I know a hell of a lot better than to fuck around with Tarot, even in a joking manner.
That being said, Tower.
In the Cluster series by Piers Anthony, introducing the Tarot to galactic civilization is one of humans most important contributions.
They also have one of my favorite aliens ever, the Polarian.
The devil card in short is all about obsessions that chains you. Not a good card.

I got this nice Halloween themed tarot deck for myself a year or two ago, and it is such a beautiful deck.
Personally, I use a three card spread to represent Past, Present and Future, and the few other spreads I've experimented with do not work well for me.
I am not fond of the complexity of the Celtic Cross spread, but if anyone has some spread suggestions I will try them out.

Since these are Halloween themed, the normal suits are replaced. Pentacles/Coins are replaced with Pumpkins.

Use a game that actually uses tarots.
The strange thing is that I don't know of GOOD games that use the tarots itself aside from Helle 4 Leather wich doesn't really use them aside from meaning certain characters. Ganakagok seems interesting but uses special cards; so does Everway.

>>54055241
Tokyo Nova is a Japanese tabletop game that uses tarot cards both as a classes and as a mechanic for the GM to introduce new things to the scenario. Basically they would have their own deck of tarot cards mixed in with some Unique Card for the system and every time they draw one it changes or adds things to the current encounter.
>>54054878
Can someone do me a crashcourse on how tarot actually works?
I see it referenced here and there but what the fuck do each card mean and how are they supposed to tell you your future? I pull a random card, it's the reaper and boom! it's means I'll die?
>>54069840
The Death card rules over transitions, it doesn't literally mean you are going to die. If you get upright death it means something major is going to change in your life.
Each card has an upright and an inverse meaning so the idea is you shuffle them while rotating half the deck each time so that some cards will be upright and others will be inverted. Both the cards you draw and their orientation is important for the reading.
>>54069899
Ah, noice. Is there somewhere* were I can read the meanings? I mean, of course if google "tarot meanings" I'll get thousands but most are probably asspulled or contradictory like that time I tried to understand chinese horoscope.
>>54069840
Meaning is inferred from the name and the aesthetics, but applied on the metaphorical level. There are also "traditional" reading of cards, but you can honestly just make up your own if you want; the idea is that you pull a combination of cards, then try to use them as a mirror for your situation at the moment, as a sort of reflective tool. A good tarot reader is working off of what you associate it with, guiding you to conclusions you want to come to.
>>54061693
I like the Nine of Swords, in part because it's been relevant a lot to me, but also because the Rider-Waite art always looks like someone woke up in the middle of the night, seized by the thought "why the everloving FUCK did I buy nine swords?"
>>54066297
>implying
I'm fond of several of my characters because they share traits with me; this must mean I believe them to exist.
>>54067723
Well, Tower is destruction of something important. While this can be something like a business or a scam, it could also signify being shaken away from a fundamental falsehood you believed true. It will certainly be very difficult to accept, but if done, it opens up potential to grow further than preconceived notions.
>>54069962
You'll get personal preference at best. However, most places will generally agree on the major principles of a card - Death is the end of something (life, relationship, delusion), The Fool is the start of a journey often with much to yet learn, The Sun is positive, often happy stuff, that sort of thing.
Snek entirely unrelated.

Fuck, wrong snek.

>>54069992
>Meaning is inferred from the name and the aesthetics
So I'm fucked if I get 6 swords because I'm gonna get stabbed?
>>54070157
Well, that's a valid, if a bit straightforward reading, but you also need to read the cards in combination usually.
>>54058170
That one you linked to isn't even a Rider-Waite card, donglord.
>>54062629
>bats don't replace the suit of wands
But! MISTAKE
>>54062543
just look at Devil's hips, man
>>54058170
Nah, the art is much better for iconography.
>>54070157
It's more abstract than that.
Swords are associated with stuff like conflict or intelligence, and six is an harmonious number in numerology, especially as it follows five, which is more chaotic.
So the Six of Swords would be about a sudden insight or twist of fate that makes you overcome or escape a tumultuous conflict.
That's just one possible reading. Tarot comes in a variation of interpretations depending on the version and the spread you're using and the combinations themselves can have more sophisticated meanings.
I've always been partial to The Emperor.

Created my own Persona game where it's used for task resolution.
Minor Arcana from 1-10 add their value to your stat.
Page, Knight, King and Queen add either 0 or 12, depending on whether you are willing to take a consequence for taking 12.
Major Arcana add the Social Link Rank you have in that Arcana x2.
Also in battle if you draw a Minor Arcana of the same suit as is associated with your weapon type, you get a bonus effect.

Obviously I understand why you guys are baffled but really it's just a natural consequence of the insane ideas of shipping fandom -- which virtually every "nerd" girl is wrapped up in.
In practical terms, being a Reinhard Heydrich fangirl is literally the same behavior as being Draco Malfoy fangirl. Substituting Heydrich just strips the flesh from the bones; the mere furniture of "school kid in a children's novel" is removed, showing the structure underneath.
This bitch comes from a subculture where it's totally normal to sympathize with and even fetishize the villain, and where the social norm is to not give anybody even a little bit of shit about it. Of course she thinks it's totally reasonable to have a girlboner for literally the worst Nazi (a real achievement, in a way), the architect of the Holocaust, and then get offended when Nazis mistake you for a Holocaust fan -- her entire social circle has totally normalized this kind of deranged logic!
TL;DR women should never be allowed to form their own societies and subcultures because they invariably become morbid, twisted up havens of nameless sicknesses.
>>54067723
It's an act of deconstruction. Tearing down ideological or habitual structures that may be more bad than good in your life. It's about making big or dramatic change as opposed to subtle change. That change can be violent, dramatic, or traumatizing, but it can also (not as alternative but in addition to...) be a necessarily abrupt end to harmful things. Kicking dangerous habits, escaping shitty relationships or professional obligations: making the clean break where weening off won't do.
>>54069797
>>54055241
What he said. Nova uses minor arcana kind of like dice where you play and draw your hand to determine outcomes to major actions. The trick is that you have incentive to intentionally fail actions because if you only ever play your good cards you'll keep getting rid of high and keeping low, until you're eventually stuck with a shit hand and plot that needs doing. So you balance what actions you think are more or less important and your pragmatic failures help give the GM hooks to work with.
But my favorite bit is that the major arcana are the class system. Every card has its own class, but every characters has 3 classes: a Public, a Private, and a kind of Side class. It goes with the Japanese idea of Honne and Tatemae, the public and private face every person is understood to have. Unlike occidental ideas about a singular essentialist self, the Japanese assume no person actually acts in public the way they do in private and consider the two personas interchangeable in appropriate context.
So for the game's class system you might choose Justice as your Public class because you're a cop and a strict adherence to rules and equity are your prerogatives on a professional basis: what upholds those values drives what you say and what you do. But maybe you take Devil as your Private class because you're actually a selfserving manipulator when no one's looking, or only in close company. Put those two together and it makes you a crooked cop.
But then while you're running around as a Justice:Devil maybe some of your associates include a HangedMan:Justice, a person bound to their job for better and for worse, a salary man halfway up the latter, too far to turn back yet nowhere near the top; but in his heart he wants to uphold order not just in his workplace protocol but in the world at large. And in addition a Justice:Justice just a fanatical workaholic cop who eats sleeps and breathes the law. It makes good synergy
>>54054878
>Everytime I self reflect with enough self criticism and severity, I draw devil
>Everytime I play ogre battle and want an iron hand ruler, I draw devil with high as fuck stats

>Still unfazed, still prefering tower and inverted hangman.
Devil isn't the best card, if anything it represents the subconscious aspects of your personality.
