In 7th edition fluff, one had to be at or near the top of their schola progenium class. This meant that one was an orphan of an imperial hero trained from childhood in the art of war and leadership. You then have to pass an initiation by killing an underperforming classmate or someone who refused the previous test. After receiving some additional training you would then be assigned to a guard regiment.

Commissars are not personal trainers. If an officer's command is incompetent, they execute said officer and handle the job themselves.

Yeah, it's grim having to execute a classmate. Almost as if life is fuckin' cheap in the imperium and commissars are expected to be the sorts of hardline people who can do that kind of stuff without hesitation.

In the Cain series, Cain often remarks that he was taken to the Schola because he was orphaned (parents killed for being cowards in IG) while Amberly always corrects him via footnote by saying that if his parents hadn't died decorated heroes within the IG, there was no way he'd have been taken to the Schola.

So from that, we know that being an orphan is part of it as with recognized parentage.

As someone who just went through basically every modern source on the Schola, I can soundly say NO class has deadbeats. They are weeded out or downright murdered by drill abbots (who all carry fuckhuge hammers for this purpose).
