sweet IG tank scheme
I love looking at this, great inspiration.
I ended up with this from a swap meet. I have no idea where to start on it and am worried by how rare it is from what I gather. However I'm exstatic because it's everything I wanted in a board.
>>54041856
Pretty cool. Was that the only piece like that? Was there a story behind it?
>>54041932
Apparently it was a promotion for the Eye of Terror campaign. I was told it was given to stores for ordering over $1000. Despite searching on ebay to gauge how much they go for I wasnt able to find any results.
This is something someone once poste on reddit>
I like how the grass, the dirt and the wall fit well together in terms of color

Its molded polystyrene best I can figure. Plus Im not sure there's a demand for 38 inch by 38 inch boards. Im considering expanding it out by 10 inches on the two axis for a 4 foot by 4 foot.
Finally a terrain thread!

Not that Im aware of but let me dig around. I want desperately to do a 40k train for a table.
>>54042194
Looks like the base of it is MDF, so Id assume not.
I'm making some buildings for a sci fi industrial set, finished another one. Going for prefabricated workshop/garage buildings you'd see on a construction site. This one turned out ok I think, was the first time experimenting with making greenstuff wires and pipes.
>>54042458
One more pic. Still have to do something with the little thing next to the generator, trying to find a tube that will fit snuggly inside to make a vent or smoke stack.
>>54042425
Cool, where is this from? I'm always on the look out for WWI 28mm inspiration.
Making terrain in CAD programs is actually kind of fun, if you can beat the program like a red headed stepchild into doing what you wish it to do. When everything works out, it's great. When it doesn't, you're bashing your face against a wall repeatedly and thanking the wall..

Mmm, what's the biggest struggle with it? Never mind programming (which is already beyond me), I would never be able to wrap my head around how to translate code into a 3D model

no anon, you don't have to write code to draw a 3d model. Just look up some torturials for solidworks or inventor. I learned the basics of solidworks on university in less than a couple of weeks.

Your stuff is pretty cool, didn't you say you had a more permanent thread on the infinity forums or shit?
And have you done any new stuff?
I recall you may have been looking at fencing or area dividers to break up between "shipping yard" and "back streets"?
>>54047122
That's more or less how to make them, yeah. Extruded foam is preferred over expanded (mainly because it's cleaner to work with), but packing materials are free, so there's that.
>>54047140
Scratchbuilt urban scatter terrain
>>54047149
would you just use an xacto knife to cut the foam? or something more along the lines of a sculpting knife?
>>54047153
Do you have a picture of all the terrain together? It's very impressive and I would like to see the whole thing
>>54047162
I prefer snap utility knives over Xactos for shaping; foam wears out the blade pretty quickly.

Reposting from /wip/:
I want to build a tiny imperial themed gothic chapell. I was thinking about using the Sanctum Imperialis or the Basilica administratum, or maybe some of the smaller buildings in the Gardens of Morr, plenty of candles and purity seals. Should I use something else? What should I put in the sanctum? A book, a sarcophagus or something more bizarre? My idea was to make it mobile, on tracks or legs.
I'm trying to brainstorm some ideas, so if you have any ideas please feel free to share.
>>54047486
Some guy in wip put chaos cathedral on baneblade.
>>54047513
Yeah, I remember that. I'll try to look back in the old wips.
I was mostly wondering how to add imperial iconography to third party buildings. I don't think walls and stuff could fit, and there aren't many places where to add aquilas. I'll make sure to add cables and techno rubbish, but apart from that, I don't have many ideas.
>>54042139
Gonna make this today, thanks for making my day off interesting my man!
Most of these are great for dioramas, but as for functioning boards just don't work. There's too much clutter and varying terrain to effectively use more than half the board surface.

>>54043462
>>54045559
Using cad for modeling is cheating. It lacks the heart and soul of a scratchbuilt conversion. All you get is some clinical lump with no feeling. As hobbyists we should reject it where we can.
>>54048265
It's just another tool in a hobbyist's arsenal, you're being overly dramatic.
>>54048265
The correct answer is to use both CAD and scratchbuilding. CAD is just another tool.
>>54048302
>>54048312
CAD killed GW's creativity. The writing is on the wall. Nothing good comes from CAD.
>>54047135

Man that's really unfortunate because it's beautiful but by 40k scale that ship is nowhere near big enough.

That's some nice looking dirt you've got there.
Maybe a bit too dry looking for a trench but it has come out really well.
I can;t wait to get back home and build some scenery.
I'm stuck thousands of KMs away from home for at least another week or two with nothing to do.

Dude! Nice work!!
Is it caulk (and sand) on canvas?
>>54053199
Yeah that's exactly what it is thanks. I also mixed ash and some plant food with the sand to vary the texture. I used a scrubber and a sponge to texture before applying the grit though. It's painted with acrylic, brown base with a heavy umber brushing. I tried to vary it up again by changing up how wet or dry the umber paint was.
Oh and also, I found I didn't have quite enough ash to finish so I was tragically forced to burn some awful manga I got for free. Something about a man getting the power of a magic girl, I never want to read another one again.
>>54053692
I never thought of using ash for texturing terrain.
How do you think it works? Is it too "thin" or does it take paint well?
TOILET TERRAIN! Great for Shadow War and Necromunda. Estimated cost $7 for everything posted here today. Including can of grey Rustoleum. Balsa wood ladders.
The best shit, the cheapest prices.
>>54053846
Yes. No. Yes.
I didn't have any problems with it at all, it was very easy to work with. Aside from the book burning (waiting for the ashes to cool and then breaking them up into a dust) the only 'tricky' part was mixing it properly with the sand. I gave it a good patting when it was sticking to the caulk, I'm not sure it would have stuck as well as it did, if I hadn't.
>>54050502
Thanks. The base structure of the building is made from foamcore/ foamboard.
If you live with women materials accumulate quickly. This is /tg/ so things might take a little longer for you guys.
It can almost be too much terrain. I'm planning to supply three game stores for a Shadow War league.

The biggest struggle is finding a program with the capabilities to do what you want. I used to use CATIA when I was at university, and it was a great program. I'm stuck using Freecad right now, and its features are somewhat lacking in comparison. I can do basic sketching, padding, pocketing, and revolutions, for instance, where I use a caliper to get an idea of estimated sizing. Grooving large detail into curved surfaces is somewhat straining, as you have to pocket a "dent" into the shape, and groove out what you want removed. I'm still not at the level where I know how to project fine detail like paneling into a curved surface, but once I figure that out, it's smooth sailing.
If you do use CAD, and send the STL file off to a 3d print service, hollow your shit out. I'm preferential to wall thicknesses of .25in since that's thick enough to provide support and not muck up the printer, while thin enough that large amounts of material are shaved off, saving you money in the long run.
In regards to programming, most sites already have things called macros, which are precanned lines of code that do stuff. If you find a macro that does what you want, you never need to look under the hood, you just plug and play.
>>54048265
>>54048488
The reason why GW models are feeling so bland and boring is because GW managed to piss of most of their senior creative stuff and they left.
Digital is just another medium.
There is not magic 'do my work for me' button. That is incredibly naive.
You know how when people ask what kind of brushes or paints somebody used to paint a mini, as if that would make their work as good as the display piece they are talking about? It's kind of like that. Just even more ignorant because most of the time these people never even touched a 3d package or have seen it in action.
>>54061174

I assume you are talking about boolean operations here. Most 3d packages should have that. As long as you got proper units set in the scene and use grid snap most architectural stuff or mechanical details should be easy. Well, still kind of a pain in the ass, but easier than if you'd have to eyeball it.
If you are using something like maya, blender or max these also have tools to smooth or relax geometry. I assume most CAD packages should have them too, although they are probably not the most prominent ones in those.

>I live in a cave
It's as other anons said, just another tool. It's extremely easy to get (pirated tho) and learn to use for this purpose desu, as the more refined functions and/or design knowledge are unnecessary to make a building or a bridge for little plastic army dudes.
Try it at least a bit before sperging around.
>>54068063
You don't have to pirate shit; Fusion360 gives you a 2 year freebie license to hobbyists as you promise not to sell anything. Shit's cash; it's easy like Sketchup without Sketchup's inherent wonkiness.
>>54068451
Well, I said pirated because I use NX, catia and creo (I don't explicitly recommend any of those if you can get inventor or others with free licenses if you ain't gonna do anything outside fucking around) due work/hobby as I know how to use them and I can't stand shit tier programs that doesn't let me do all I need but yeah there are "free" alternatives.
Most people start with a pirated solidworks tho as it absolutely retard proof with some nice things
like people are saying CAD is just another tool.
Especially when it comes to making terrain.
Actually I think that terrain is one of those things in the hobby that shows how creative one is, rather than just how talented.
