I remember there was a D&D 3.5-ish manual about magical warfare and how magic works best with modern tactics. Some stuff I remember reading:
>Using bonded familiars as UAV drones
A Druid could dispatch some birds to spy on the enemy and report on their positions
>A scroll of fireball is a rocket launcher
Equip enough conscripts with enough scrolls and you have tankhunters who could take down a charging giant
>Trenches are better than stone walls
Wizards could turn stone into mud so a wall isn't going to save you. A trench or a dungeon on the other can protect you from both the birds and the fireballs.

Complete Warrior has a section on that, but it didn't cover bonded familiars.

Blades in the Darkness is pretty much Fantasy Shadowrun, so it's kinda relevant.
