I've already played a campaign in Ravenloft ( The one against Lord Soth ) so I know how is the setting, i'm going to play as an High Elf mage (from lvl1) any advice without telling spoiler?

Make sure there's a paladin or a cleric in your party. Either will do fine.
Also, learn to pick your battles. Learn to be paranoid. For god's sake, learn to cut your losses and run when it's necessary.
