Ever use real coins in your games? How did it go?
I've wanted to in the past, but slowly grew out of the idea because it's very "gimmicky" and doesn't hold to my slowly maturing concept of "pure" gaming.
That, and I didn't find any coins I really liked, because fantasy ones made for games are stupidly expensive, and I couldn't find any foreign coins I liked either.

I would like to, but then I remember that when characters get 200 gold or so each shit gets VERY expensive. If you aren't using money 1:1, why bother?

Poker chips, man. They're cheap as hell and come in varying denominations.

I do. I keep a small chest where I store small objects I consider "neat-looking." There are old skeleton keys, bird skulls, gaudy junk rings, tiny metal bottles, strange coins and medallions, odd glass "gems" and the like. These are handed-out to players to visually indicate their possession of an artefact important to their mission objective - if any. Over time, the players have made a sub-game of palming each others' artefacts and playing the innocent. They now immediately pocket and jealously guard these little props in a most satisfactorily IC manner.
It's a little thing, but I think it adds to the sessions, rather than subtracts. YMMV.

I'm curious what you mean by "pure" gaming
I like to use props, but using real coins to signify in-game money would be incredibly cumbersome
