GW made a great keyword system, and then never uses it. all of the stuff that should be using keywords for affecting friendly unit of a certain type instead name units by datasheet name, limiting them from affecting future releases or FW models. it's a pretty dumb way of going about things that entirely defeats the point of using a keyword system and slapping so many keywords one very unit.

Conscripts may be worse at shooting than Infantry and may be restricted to lasguns only...but you can bring more while doing about the same damage per cost, are way cheaper when using Power Points, can be boosted with a single order or character, and give me an excuse to use Commissars that I was already going to use anyway, while Infantry squads can't become Combined Squads anymore.

Why would I EVER use 5 Infantry squads instead of the Sanctioned Cancer that is a 50 man Conscript squad? Have you guys played any games lately?

I had a fun 1000 point game yesterday against Chaos. My first game of 8th edition and I used a bunch of recently built models. Bullgryn, Crusaders and Conscripts were my stars of the show. Also Infantry squads running at 70 miles per hour to grab objectives thanks to Move Move Move.

Infantry squads are great mostly for objectives and speed bumping melee units. Conscripts are supposed to be the shield, but infantry squads do better at that. Give them a heavy bolter so they can fire on the move easier, give them a plasma gun or grenade launcher and have them grab objectives and take potshots at things. Let your tanks, heavy weapon squads, artillery, Conscripts and Scions to the heavy lifting.

A friend asked me the same question yesterday.
Tell me, what was the point of taking allies? And how would you take Enginseers for your Leman Russes if they're in a different list?
This is all about whose rules can affect what units in your army.
Take for example Plague marines. Troops for nurglites, Elites for everyone else.
If you take a regular, say Khornate Lord, you'll boost Elite Plague marines, but not Troop Plague Marines of Nurgle. You'd need a Nurgle chaos lord for those guys.
If you took from both, it's like you were bringing allies. Because that's how it is in this edition.
The same way, a Nurglite Chaos lord will do shit for the rest of your non-nurgle army.

For an up close blood claws 10 man squad; would you recommend I equip the leader with a power fist, power sword or chainsword?

Honestly list making with just a pen and paper is super easy. Are people really not capable of being like, "okay, I want a 5 model unit of this, it is 13 points a model, and I want a special gun that is 10 points, so thats 5 x 13 +10 = 75"

In my case, my DP managed to kill 3 Devastators in CC and then got 12 wounds on the charge by the Emperor's Champion. Granted, that guy is tailor-made to push characters' shit in, but stilkl lackluster display in killypower. Only being able to cast 1 power hampers his psychic potential as well.

I'd actually say the DP has several problems. Overall lack of power notwithstanding, the wings are too costly for an extra 4" of movement. They give you FLY.. but you need to buy the 9 point bolter to make full use of it, which ranks up the price even higher.

I'd say the bolter is almost a must-have though, seeing as otherwise you don't even have a ranged attack on him.

When I make a 2000 point list I try to refine it as much as possible and optimize the hell out of it. Then you show up to a game night and your opponent doesn't have enough to play 2000 points... and you need to cut 200 points like it's some trivial task.

I actually really like power for situations like that.

I think if people want to play points in pickup games they should have a 1000, 1500, and 2000 point list prepared.

Conscripts are the most taxing option for filling the troops slots. Sure they're dirt cheap but it's a crazy amount of models when you start filling your troop slots. If you want detachments and lots of CP then you need to take the real soldiers. Yeah it's only 10 guys but if you have your squads surround a commissar then it's no issue. Plus its another avenue for sprinkling HWT and specials around the field.

Thank you, someone who gets it. I do the same thing. I put in a lot of time for my 2000 point lists, making sure it's the perfect balance of units I love, units that are effective, units that are fun for the opponent to fight and that I have all my bases covered. Then I suddenly have to cut or add things and it's not exactly what I want to play, but I don't have much choice if I want a game. One of the weirdest moments was having a guy that had 650 points, another guy having around 700 something points so we played 2v1 at 1350.

They're decent speed bumps and being able to split them between objectives is easier than trying to stretch one 50 man blob over multiple objectives.

In fact the difference between 50 conscripts and 5 10-man infantry squads is more about the commissar being able to get the entire unit in his bubble (which is much less of a problem for 10 man squads than a 50 man blob) and the fact that you can hit a whole blob with one order, which is neat but frankly getting 3-5 orders in an AG army is fucking trivial.

Also if you do mech guard, storm chimeras are actually decent at their job unlike regular chimeras and taurox are actually pretty good.

Also 5 infantry squads allows you to deep strike 5 Scion squads instead of just 1.

I do like Draykavac, but he doesn't strike me as the master of an oather Knight House and giant beep boops.
He, and Myrmidons and the Archmagos FW kitbashed from them on pic related are one of many styles of Magi, very different to the carapaced ones that GW produces.

Yeah D3 damage is actually pretty bad. It's great against single targets but against squads with multi-wound it's so bad.

So if you shoot the Taunar with some strength 12 D6 3 shot gun or something hypothetical.
First you roll to hit and wound. Lets say one would wound, taunar can just pass it straight off to a nearby drone which can then try to save.
A nearby 8 point gun drone could tank that D6 shot and only 1 drone would die.

The issue is that PL is balanced around the average point values of the possible loadouts for each unit, not max loadouts. At a tourney, people will play to win, which means not saying no to free wargear, which in turns always taking maxed loadouts which the system was not balanced for. Units with the largest discrepancy between average and max loadouts will be significantly favored under this system.

I was on the understanding that a unit only needs a single model within range to qualify for the entire boost.
One model is within 6" of a Commissar? Then all 50 use his Ld and only one dies when they fail morale. Five 10 man units can do the same, but they'd need to be in a star pattern around the Commissar instead of merely in front, thus maneuvering five units is more of a hassle than a single big one.
I'd say what you can capture with 10 dudes, a heavy bolter and a Commissar you can capture better with 20 and a Commissar, but details do come into consideration.

So, the veredict I'm getting from you would be:

He goes in your HH Knight list, gives all your units +1 Charge and some other gubbinz, and lets you take a few types of robots along with to represent a Mechanicum household. I don't think there's any model of the kind of thing you want, but here's a kitbash that looks pretty good. Except not all units have the same % gap between average and maximum loadout. There are units with no wargear options at all, which by definition will always be at their average value, while other units can potentially take gear far more expensive than the rest of their stuff, indicating a higher deviation. It results in wonky balance across the board.

I'd say so. Frankly you want a brigade detachment as AM, so why not run both a bunch of infantry squads and a 50 man conscript blob with a commissar? They do slightly different jobs and there's no reason you cant have both.

Frankly, Taunars are only 6 wounds more than a plain imperial Knight with the same armor/invul saves while costing nearly/over double depending on loadout. It kind of needs a defense mechanism.

This would be my problem, I really only like SM currently so I would make the program modular so that you could enter a text file with model names, rules, whatever and have them work in the program.
