Banned in EDH in 3....2.....1.....

Well this is a game winner in limited, stupid in EDH, and will probably see standard play if black-containing midrange or control decks are a thing.

It's also probably going to look great in foil.

There's quite a bit of "lose 3 unless sac or discard", I wonder if it's going to be a new bolas thing, or if effects like that are going to be a new thing black gets.
>>
>>53965454
It's a cycle of three they just unveiled.
>>
>>53965454
In Melissa Detorra article she explains that it's a mini cycle of cards that are limited in number to make the choice of losing life or discarding/sacing things more interesting

Kinda sucks they can just sac the creature you -3/-3ed. Instant Speed helps it a ton though.
>>
>>53965590

Fuck. I can't read and missed "Another".
>>
>>53965328
Wait, stop, that card is bad unless you have stupid amounts of mana (at which point you can just Exsanguniate).

In later stages of the game, your opponent has an average of six cards in hand and non-land permanents on the board in total. You aim to kill him, so let's just count life; Hailfire surpasses a fireball at 11 mana (-9). Say you fail to reach that point: he just leaves his best creature on the board and murders you, because you wasted an opportunity to cast a 10 mana threat.

Generally, Fireballs are reach for semi-agressive decks, and are supposed to finish you off at X=6+-1. This card fails at that and performs as the solo finisher, but then it has to hit for at least 20, and that's 15 mana! Maybe you aim to destroy your opponent's board and hand and make Hailfire lethal for just 9 mana - okay, he has no creatures and no answers, just play a resilient threat or a huge walker (ironically, Bolas is perfect in this case).

And obviously it's shit at removal and discard, see Killing Wave.
>>
>>53965367
Not really that amazing in EDH. It gives players a choice and is only as good as any other infinite mana outlet. I see it being used in mono-black and not much else. It's good, and can be used to get some great value, but Exsanguinate is better.
>>
>>53965590

its been built for the archenemy bolas deck because it effects all opponents on the field and not just one.

so it surpasses fireball for damage when cast for 3 mana because of 3 damage to 3 people so long as you're playing the boss-card game

but you can't make them do anything, they'll do exactly whats best for them.

also this just means this card will be unable to kill in many situations and your opponent (especially if they know about this in your deck) can just hold on to a bunch of lands.

an UNRELIABLE Fireball, jeez.
>>
>>53966290

I don't speak moon-runes either, but I think the whole comic is about Nicol Bolas being completely clueless about the new rules, colorless symbols and whatnot, due having been away for so long, and him going "What the heck happened while I was away?" as he checks manuals.

>>
>>53965328
I'd play this because your either gonna get some serious value out of this no matter what the shit since you are gonna sit on this as a finisher.
at 5 mana and up this gets absolutely stupid, since by that point your opponent likely won't have that many cards in hand other then trump cards to bail themselves out of whatever other garbage is going on and eating 9 or more damage for 5 and up mana is pretty damn good, or they can grit their teeth and feed permanents to it but i doubt they would like that very much and it could completely screw what they were trying to do.

now normally i dislike choice cards but this one is fairly decent for one of them, if life loss was a 1 life per repeated process it would be garbo but 3 each can lead to nasty stuff.

Hydras DO fit as a green thing, and they've finally started not making them all about headgrowing which is good. Most of what I have read of the Old Testament says otherwise (not that either Testament is really valid as a historical source). Some editions will call them indentured servants as a way to make Christians feel better about YHWH sanctioning slavery, but never have I heard them refered to as free but pious individuals. Do you have a source?
>>
>>53965634

Even in EDH, you'd be surprised at how effective this can be. I'm not saying it should be slotted into every EDH deck with black mana, but it's a way for mono black to potentially chew through artifacts and enchantments or hit their life total more efficiently than a 1:1 ratio. It'll be played, but I don't think it'll be a sure fire staple.

It's not like the Jews worked on the pyramids or anything. Neither Testament mentions that.

I was making a comment about how Christians are quick to change the wording of "slavery" to "indentured servents" to suit their sensibilities and internal conception of god. I see how, because of my wording, that could be taken as an implication that YHWH sanctioned and commanded the slaves to work on the pyramids. I was not implying that, you are quite mistaken. Let me rephrase to clarify my thought:
>never have I heard slaves (them) refered to as free but pious individuals
Still waiting on a source from anyone that slaves wouldn't play a part in societal construction, especially in the fucking bronze age. It's not really a leap to assume Eqypt used it's resources (slaves, ect.) to build. Also what is mormanism to this conversation exactly? Didn't really get what you were implying

Eh. The events of SoI/EM and Amonkhet would have pretty much happened without the Gatewatch being there. SoI was caused by Nahiri, and in Amonkhet they arrived a few days before Bolas's plan was to be completed anyways. Hell, the only place they actually set out to save was Zendikar. In Shadows Jace is looking for Sorin, Kaladesh they only reason they ended up there is because Dovin wanted to hire them, and Amonkhet they actually went there specifically to fight Bolas.

I know what slaves are you mongoloid, they are owned people used for tasks, often the lower levels of labor. Every society and culture has different rules regarding their treatment, but yes throughout history slaves are generally considered subhuman and put to work, exactly like American slaves. Do you honestly think any slaves won through war would be treated as well as free peoples? Have you no understanding of the long history surrounding slavery? Look at the long history of the trans-saharan slave trade as an example if you have trouble finding a starting point. Of course they used slaves to some degree, you think they just had a large, under paid mexican workforce ready to build the pyramids for pennies on the dollar? Think before you type you fuckup

Read the fucking card again. It doesn't MAKE the opponent sac or discard anything. They can CHOOSE to sac or discard cards if that would be the most beneficial outcome for them.

The effect of the spell is always the worst possible outcome because the opponent is the one making the decisions that are most beneficial to him.

When you need the card to be a fireball to lifedrain for the win, it doesn't. When you need to remove a high threat permanent, it doesn't. When you need to drain their hand, it doesn't. No matter the scenario, Torment of Hailfire is never the answer because its effect will always resolve to your worst possible outcome.

All of its effects are good.

>>
>>53973692

It's strictly worse than Exsanguinate as a late game card in the one format that cares about it.
>>
>>53972780
It wouldn't be too hard to force people to chose.
3 cards in hand and no permanents on the field? Ok, you can dump your hand or lose 15 life.
Empty (or low) hand? Start saccing permanents or lose a ton of life.
>>53973749

>>

>>

Yeah I realized that it would just turn it back on the player and then redo the effect.

I was thinking if they paid like 4 mana for x choose four targets and insidious will it so you can choose 4 targets.

But the initial target for the spell was the player to begin with.

This is a fact, I agree with your statement, it's basically Killing Wave 2.0.

That being said, in certain situations, any outcome is beneficial. Waste Not + Mazirek means you're taking the damage as life. Wound Reflection means you're not taking the life damage. It can be good, but is build around and requires finesse.
>>
>>53973770
thing is this is in standard and is going to be like a $10 card as black never had this kind of removal before being that it can potentially target enchantments.

But yeah, if you are losing bad this can't save you but it can definitely ensure a victory if you are already doing well.
>>
>>53970862
Egypt had an overpopulation problem. The Nile flood plains were so regular and fertile that they could easily support far more people than they had full-time labor for. During the harvest every hand was useful, but the rest of the year those hands were idle. The pyramids were a labor sink to keep those workers employed and occupied in the off-season.
>>
>>53971421
Didn't Ajani at least scare him off too?
>>
>>53974073

Scare him off? Sure. Umezawa blew up his physical manifestation then lobotomized him before finishing him off spiritually. I think this was back when he was an old walker too iirc.
>>
>>53974105

Did they time travel or something?

If I remember correctly he somehow returns, and kills like a spirit version of himself on zendikar and then Ajani time travels and prevents it.
>>
>>53974162
he came back using Venser's spark, which is special.

and no, AJani's shit happened on Alara, where Ajani casts clone on Bolas and has the clone fight Bolas (using the Conflux mana)
>>
>>53974162

Umezawa goes and hides out on a demiplane connected to Domina, the plane of meditation. Bolas is pissed that he can't find him. Eventually he pops up and kills Ramses Underdark, then vanishes into the demiplane right in front of Bolas. Bolas figures out how to follow him by bringing his physical manifestation into Dominaria then projecting his mind into the demiplane.

Then the giant spell hits the temple and kills Bolas's body while Tetsuo takes him out on the plane of meditation. After lobotomizing him he shatters him and basically drives his presence from the plane.
>>
>>53974319
How did Bolas survive that? Because a lobotomy and death of your body sounds like something even an Oldwalker couldn't bullshit their way past.
>>
>>53974390

I don't think he had 100% of his essence on the plane. He was basically pulling an Eldrazi, but I could be misunderstanding.
>>
>>53974390
he didn't, a bit of his mana lingered and Venser's mutated spark allowed him to effectively pull himself from the aether.

and the "death of your body" is rather meaningless for oldwalkers, they were essentially living mana, pulling energy directly out of the blind eternities to fuel their godliness.

which is one of the things that caused so much damage to the multiverse, and why Jeska, when she acheived ultimate power and became the strongest single being in the multiverse, took away Planeswalkers powers
>>
>>53971576

That doesn't describe any of the last four blocks accurately.

>BFZ/OGW: The gatewatch meets and teams up on Zendikar, partially because everyone on the Gatewatch except Gideon is partially to blame for Zendikar getting fucked in the first place and they wish to unfuck it. By some miracle, they manage to channel-fireball the Eldrazi and prevent Zendikar from being annihilated completely.
>The SOI plot basically happens completely independently of the Gatewatch; Jace stumbles around the plane and nearly dies and goes insane while Sorin and Nahiri drive the entirety of the plotline. Jace just happens to be there when Emrakul emerges and calls his buds for help. They lose to Emmy but she forces them to seal her in the moon instead of consuming the plane for unknown reasons.
>Chandra gets a reminder of Kaladesh from Baan visiting a couple months later, and Liliana talks her into going to see what's up there even though she thinks her parents are dead. As it turns out, her mom is not, so when the rest of the team goes to get her, Chandra's not going anywhere and they agree to help when it becomes clear part of the problem is Tezzeret meddling in the plane's politics. A fairly bloodless revolt ensues, but carnage is avoided and the gatewatch, lulled into a false sense of security, pursues Tezzeret to Amonkhet.
>They arrive on Amonkhet, feeling a sense of unease that things aren't what they expected. Gideon has trouble reconciling the benign gods with what he's heard about Bolas while the others look for clues but get captured. Then Bolas shows up and things go south FAST.

Excuse me sir, you dropped pic related. but in all honesty it's all a matter of faith and I understand that you don't believe the bible but still

also to answer >>53965678's question it would be yes if it weren't for context.

The Israelites moved to Egypt long before Moses all thanks to Joseph, who saved Egypt from a famine and brought his entire family to him. Now, at the beginning of this time of the Israelites (or Jacob and his family, but Jacob already had his name changed to Israel) dwelling in Egypt, there weren't a lot of these new folk running around. It was like 90% Egyptians and 10% Israelites or something like that. However, the Israelites slowly began to outnumber the Egyptians, so what does the new pharaoh (who forgot about Joseph saving Egypt long ago) do? He kills all of the young boys and makes the children of Israel slaves so they won't bother them any more...

That would've been the case if it weren't for one mother sending her son (Moses) down the Luxa Nile and winding up in the pharaoh's palace thing. So, to make a long explanation less longer, Moses becomes a prophet after running away and tries to convince the pharaoh to let his people go. Now, at this point the pharaoh doesn't know this man or his godly power (AKA the priesthood), so he waves him off. Moses then turns his staff into a snake and eats the pharaoh's magician's snakes. But, the pharaoh hardens his heart (it says in the bible that the lord hardens the pharaoh's heart but being one of the 10 mormons on 4chan I believe a more accurate translation is that the pharaoh hardens is heart. InB4 "oooooh you retconned the bible" yes I know again faith) and refuses to let the Israelites go. So, Moses then starts the plagues of Egypt, and the plagues of Egypt are justified because of one stiff-necked man.
>>
>>53976448
Umezawa's been dead for centuries. And one of the first things Bolas said he was doing once he was doing again was murdering every Umezawa on both Dominaria and Kamigawa, and that was prior to the Mending hitting.
>>
>>53977317

Right. So it's the perfect setup, story-wise, to have a new Umezawa face off against Bolas. David v Goliath.

We're not at the pre-Mending, we're sixty years past that.
This is something Bolas already did.
And it definitely wasn't on Amonkhet.
Now, something like the plot of Dominaria involving the last Umezawa descendents he missed somehow? Might be neat. But then you get Bolas YET AGAIN three sets after Hour.
>>
>>53977482

Yeah, but if you're looking for a good story after Bolas whips Gatewatch's ass in a serious fashion, and then goes for a victory lap to rain down fire on the last Umezawas, then that's your story. From victory to defeat, not thanks to fancy ass planeswalkers with deep power to tap into, but thanks to the courage and honor of a single family of humans.

having played monoblack a ton, i'd say this card is about 1.5x better than exsanguinate in casual edh

when it comes down to it, exsanguinate either kills players or it doesnt. and it requires a ton of mana to kill anyone. other than that, it doesn't affect the board at all, so in a lot of cases it'll only delay your defeat a couple of turns because you just committed a political suicide.

meanwhile, torment of hailfire will fuck up boards, hands and so on. obviously, there are situations where it's not going to do much, like if someone has a ton of tokens, but it's very much a "20 mana win game" which is very useful in monoblack where you have mana coming out of your ass
>>
Is anyone else pleasantly surprised by the set so far?

Can someone clarify the wording of this for me?

It says Repeat X times, meaning that in a pinch you can cast it for just BB and it will still force them to choose between 3 life and a card, right?
>>
>>53984455
No, if x=0 you do the procedure 0 times
>>
>>53984455
Repeat the following process 0 times:
>>
>>53984455
>>53984525
>>53984539
An old joke goes roughly as follows:
"Stop being a smartass! Do I have to repeat myself again?"
- "Repeating yourself again means you have repeated yourself before; you have to repeat yourself or say it again."

From a linguistic perspective, it's a perfectly valid reasoning to cast it for X = 0, perform the action, then repeat it zero times. From a rules perspective, I'm certain they simply mean "perform the following process X times, one after another", though.
>>
>>53986083
Yes, otherwise the wording used is "Do x. Then repeat this Y times.'
>>
>>53986083
It's kinda funny. They should've just said "do" or "perform this action X times." It would be perfectly clear if they hadn't said "repeat." It looks like R&D kinda beefed it unless they really did intend casting it for 0 to equal 1 runthrough, which I also doubt.
>>
>>53986182
It's not the most patheitc thing they've done.
>>
>>53986083
>>53986182
We won't know for sure until the judge notes are sent out, but, I think if they intended it to be repeated X+1 times, it would say

>Each opponent blah blah.
>Then, repeat this process X times.

However, MtG grammar has been changing in recent years, so I could be completely wrong. We will know for sure in the coming weeks.
>>
>>53986323

Maro already said on his blog it's X times, not X+1 times.
>>
>>53986575
Ah, I'll have to search Blogatog then. Does he explain why they worded it the way that they did? It seems like there must be a better and less confusing way to word it.
>>
>>53986662

Nah, he doesn't explain it, just agrees that the wording could be clearer.
>>
>>53986662
Card templating, like certain legal systems, tends to be based heavily on precedent.

They have a number of cards that read "Do [action]. Repeat this process N times."

Then it comes time for a card that only does that action X times. They could have you do it once, then repeat it X-1 times, but they're used to seeing "Repeat this process N times" as referring to N iterations of the process.
>>
>>53987345
in this instance it's actually more appropriate to compare to programming. it's the difference between a do and a while loop. in most templates it's <do stuff> then repeat this process some number of times. this is finctionally a do loop, first you perform the action, tuen you check if it should loop or not.

torment of hailfire says repeat the following x times: <the following>. this is effectively a while loop, where the program checks if it should loop, and if yes performs the looped procedure.
>>
>>53965328
Wait, could this work as a finisher in rax decks? The opponent shouldn't have cards in hand in the first place, so the choice is between "wipe your board" (wich should be pretty clear thanks to LotV) or "take the last points of damage"
>>
>>53965328

This is only good in midgame or control decks. In a B/G deck with some hardcore early game ramp you'd basically force a board/hand wipe.
>>
>>53988628

>Cryptolith rite

It's way way less than 10%. According to Gallup polling around 3.5% of the population answers "yes" when asked if they identify as "lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender"

I wish I could find data that actually breaks down who identifies as what, from other sources I've seen that transgendered individuals are less than. 0.3% of the population. Given that women are much more likely (and culturally accepted in america) than men to report being bicurious or bisexual, I'd assume it's less than 2% remaining gay and lesbian.

In any event, a tiny tiny minority of the population. Which makes the whole "did you just assume my gender" and pronoun tiptoeing nonsense even more puzzling.

9% of the US is diabetic and 19% are disabled, for some comparisons. Imagine how absurd it would be to be chided for assuming someone is able bodied or has a functioning pancreas, despite it being many times more likely that they actually do have a problem.

I just don't care, really. This entire set is supposed to be about Bolas devastating a plane and I could not even begin to give a shit. It was a plane meant to be destroyed, and the established characters who "lose" aren't going to die, they're just going to get defeated.

This is not going to have the same impact New Phyrexia did. This is just Bolas fucking around on cosplay Egypt.

I just want to get hype about a set, but now that they're torching blocks completely and we're never going to get a world that feels like a real place that we get to immerse ourselves in. We're not going to care about any planes out from here because we'll have spent maybe five minutes there at most, and they just want to get whatever culture it is plastered up without any thought and move on to the next one.

Fuck what I wouldn't give to see an Alara five hundred years later, after the worlds have intermingled. Or a Zendikar that actually gets some civilizations built up after the roil has calmed the fuck down. Or Kamigawa.

But no, we're just gonna get these cheap, flimsy sets with no personality that I cannot attach myself to, because everything has to be within the lifespan of the Gatewatch, with no progression or change or meaningful focus on any character that isn't a marketing-mandated merch pony.

Yes, just give me a few reprints, something to add to my Modern or Commander deck, and I'll wait it out until the next set. I'll play Prerelease, those are fun.

I miss City of Guilds.

>>54012074

I know that everyone, including myself, hates the "muh limited" excuse, but I can honestly see people who only play draft shitting themselves with anger if they printed bolt at common.

A card as powerful as bolt at common would bend the entire limited format around itself.
>>
>>54012209
As a limited player, no i don't mind.

They could just solve that problem by printing it at the same rarity as Fatal Push: uncommon symbol on rare sheet

Yeah.

I basically never presume that people are healthy anymore. Someone always has cancer, some grossly debilitating health condition, divorced, has shitty kids, have some sensitive topic that you can't go on a tirade about, or if they're old enough - had someone die in their family recently. Can't talk about religion with religious people either; it's like they're conditioned to not talk about it. Or they're too weak in their religion to have a discussion about it without presuming you're criticizing them.

And in spite of all that, those are still topics that are breached in everyday discussion. But for some weird reason the smaller the minority the greater the reason we have to tiptoe around them.

>>
>>54012209
It's fine that cards like Bolt, Doom Blade, and recently Fatal Push would be printed at Uncommon so as to not warp the Limited format around those premium cards. I'm certainly in the camp that doesn't want to see Bolt and Doom Blade at Common, the early post-M10 Core Set drafts were somewhat insufferable because of that.

The issue is when they place cards like Hero's Downfall at Rare. Or Cancel variants at Rare.

That's not an issue with Limited but it has implications for Constructed. Those cards should be at Uncommon. A given Uncommon might only show up in a draft once, which is not that big of a deal. But for Constructed, if you put premium removal at Rare, it benefits nobody except drives up the price for those deck staples.

Fatal Push is actually rarer than any other Aether Revolt uncommon
>>
>>54012842
I would normally be dismissive of that sort of thing but given Wizards' track record for deceitful faggotry I can't help but decide that that decision was made on purpose.

Most people I would just mark that up as a random fuck-up or necessary concession for printing purposes. But this is Wizards who purposely deprive pre-constructed decks of anything useful. Limiting the supply of Fatal Push is just a bone they're throwing to the secondary market.
>>
>>54012881

>>

>>54012881

>>
>>54012927
I'm not talking about buying it as singles
I'm talking about opening it in packs
Buy an AER box and open it, you'll have less Fatal Push than other uncommons
>>
>>54012927
Don't fucking defend Wizards like that. When Aether Revolt came out there were photos from multiple stores showing that the yield of Fatal Pushes was significantly less than every other Uncommon in the set.

One store doing it to justify inflated prices for that card - I could believe that. MULTIPLE stores? Suddenly it's just a sad reality.

It's been shown multiple times with various tokens as well - there are "rare" tokens.

My store - an entire sealed pre-release of 20 people and including prizes only two Fatal Pushes were opened.
>>
>>54012955
It's still not rarer.
There's 62 uncommons in AER. There's 108 uncommons in a box. You will get on average 1-2 Pushes.
>>
>>54012983
On average you'll get 0 Fatal Push
It's like opening a box for a precise rare
>>54012979
>>
>>54012979

Token we always knw, didn't wizard said toekns were proportional to the rarity of the card generarting them?
>>
>>54013009
If the average is 0 then there wouldn't be any Fatal Pushes in circulation. If you want to argue, take off your hate goggles.
>>
>>54013031
That's probably why Emblems are a pain to get
It also explain the cost of original Voice of Resurgence tokens in some way
>>
>>54012983
The sheer fact that you run a solid chance of opening 0-2 copies of an uncommon from a single box not to mention not getting a single useful Rare just gives me all the justification in the world to think it's utterly retarded to open sealed product without drafting it.

They've been shoving down "bad cards must exist" or "it's for Limited" bullshit down our throats for over a decade just to make it fucking impossible to even remotely coming close to building 10% of a constructed deck from opening a single box.

Aether Revolt printed three fucking Hill Giants. I was fucking sick of seeing them in Limited. They build up a shit excuse "for Limited" to design worthless commons nobody wants to play in Limited or Constructed and it helps regulate the rate at which they print new good cards. I understand you can't print Path every year and they've burned through their Doom Blade variants (Ultimate Price and Go For The Throat) but for fucks sake it's gone too far.

I get it, you don't want Shock in a format with Morph. Completely understandable.

Yunno what you do - you just fucking reprint Shock and stick it at Uncommon. Because it sure as fuck is better than the situation that came about with Wild Slash.

>>54013182
I don't want to be so dismissive of your optimism but Wizards has done absolutely nothing to (significantly) improve the financial situation in their game. Whatever they've announced is just posturing and hollow fucking promises; just like the Masters sets; just like the promise that Mythic rarity adds any value to the game; just like the promise that they knew what they were doing when they changed the rotation and block structure.

They don't know what they're doing. They haven't known what is effective for the past decade; they're marking up record revenues and can't figure out why people are pissed. And all the fucking promises to clean up their act is too fucking late because I've heard those promises before and we got nothing.

And the reason why I'm so hostile to statements like your is because it sounds like the many things die-hard ignorant Magic fans would say to apologize for Wizards god-awful behavior; it's like people who defend their drug dealer.

This isn't D&D. You're not gonna get a world with functioning societies and minutia to discover in all the nooks and crannies because this isn't Waterdeep or something. It wasn't meant to be. And outside of the artbooks or a D&D campaign module built on it, you aren't gonna get those details.

Go play D&D if you want that kind of depth for your roleplaying, but in Magic the story isn't about you and it never was. Ravnica is a complex place indeed, but it's an exception among many other settings. We visit planes during times of conflict and upheaval. We don't visit when nothing's happening and we just explore the world, because this game is about conflict.

Once again, go play some tabletop and explore those ideas there. That's perfectly fine. But expecting that to be the focus of the card game is folly.

"Conflict and upheaval" is different from "ultimate ruination." Compare, say, Ice Age and Alliances: there you had an ongoing ethnic/regional conflict, exploration of an unknown world, and conspiracies going on in the background; then a gradual climate change upending the power balance and changing cultures and geography, but not fundamentally destroying the character of the setting.

The recent model has been Interesting New Setting--->Big Villain Makes It BIG VILLAIN WORLD! Khans was the worst, because the clans provided a ready source of conflict that just got tossed aside for DRAGOOOONNSS! Amonkhet just feels pointless, because it was clear immediately that all the worldbuilding was going to end with "then Bolas kills everyone."

Magic players like attaching themselves to certain worlds, it's part of the appeal of the game. If I wanted to fuck around purely with mechanics, I wouldn't be playing magic, and neither would you. There's at least some flavour that matters.

The tl;dr is that the flavour is absolute shit now, and as a result I do not even give an inkling of a fuck, because as far as mechanics go it's been the same shit for what, 4 years now?

The last time the game could be considered genuinely good was maybe Innistrad/RTR standard?

That comes across more as saying that gays should only exist in fantasy worlds with mythical creatures like elves or dragons
>>
>>54016206
Fallen Empires does the "suddenly, apocalypse!" thing better than recent sets for a couple reasons. First, it's a super traditional fantasy song: Tolkien elves and dwarves, early modern European humans, etc. We already know all the basics of the setting coming in.
Then, it turns out that Sarpadia really doesn't matter in the wider world. We understand that our view of the setting is coming from a contemporary history book discovered later, not the pov of a bunch of superheroes who just happen to be there for IMPORTANT PLOT POINT.
Similarly, the cause of the collapse is essentially coincidence: the war half a world away, which has nothing to do with them, fucked up the climate and ruined the delicate balance that let all the factions coexist, and we see the fallout. It's kind of a coda to the Brothers' War-Ice Age storyline, so it has less narrative weight to carry.
