I say the IWs would recruit from Krieg, and the SG would recruit from Catachan.
I don't know who would recruit from Armageddon or Mordia.

Krieg would probably be too risky. It's a completely nuked out hell hole, far too much chance of mutations, which is a dangerous combo with any geneseed.

Well, he could be a demolitionist. That is a decent job description for some people. Or a VERY specialist chemist.
Still, I do get into character a bit, especially in friendly games. Why not? We're playing complicated toy soldiers while trading assorted jokes and barbs that take a decent historical interest in a fictional universe to understand, it's not like we're going to look LESS nerdy by not outwardly enjoying ourselves.

Sometimes, depending on who I'm playing, what type of battle/where it is being fought, if it's a fluffy fight... I usually just try to make sure we're both having fun; the odd reroll or extra dice/inch/whatever if it's thematic or fun. I'm less interested in having those for myself, because a) I feel like a dirty cheater then (even if we've agreed about such things in advance) and b) more casualties = more bitterness.

Me and my friends decided to get into HH.
They already picked their armies (Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors) and I'm still not decided.
At first I wanted to go with AdMech, then Death Guard, and now even considering Ultramarines and Imperial Fists because I've recently developed fetish for models with shields (in adition to MKIII armour fetish).

What should I do?

I think both. Regular hive planets (not Cadia) give a tithe of a regiment, armed but to be trained in the IG way. Krieg gave 10 fully equipped and trained regiments when they returned to the Imperium, and each of them asked immediate deployment on the hardest zones possible. And that was before the Administratum sanctioned Vitae Wombs and Viagra for both sexes, so the amount can only go up.
And their "mutation" is those guys are pale from not getting too much sun. Arvo, Krieg protagonist of this short story, was able to both blend in perfectly and adapt to civilian life, if only returning to service a year later.
>>53951880

>>
>>53952019
Since your friends have gone full meme you should get IF or DG for extra memeness
>>
>>53951908
There are no Cadian civilians, they're all reservists. The same goes for Krieg. Cadia had the Eye of Terror mutations, Krieg had post nuclear winter ones.
I say they're on a similar level, but for Cadia it was a necessary thing while for Krieg... that's how those guys are.
>>
>>53952025
According to my 5E IG Codex, literally every world raises regiments of IG according to what they can and what traditions they have, so there is no unified "IG way". Trends might be common, either because they're effective or because they're in vogue, but that's all.
>>
>>53952019
Tell us, Anon. Besides shields what else do you like? What's best in life, eh?
>>
>>53952092
I read of natives having to being issued lasguns with wooden stocks to feel comfortable with them, and having to be briefed on the nature of space travel, or becoming regiments entirely made up of Roughriders to lessen the cultural shock.
>>
>>53952102
Well I don't have preference in type of army per se, I'm more painter and collector, so my choices are based on looks and fluff, more than gameplay, hence thing with shields. On one hand I don't want another blue army (have Deathskull Orks, Thousand Sons for 40k, Tzeentch (actually more rainbow than blue) for AoS), but on the other I could just follow the pattern and do another one. I like things where I can go full wild with painting and push it to the edge with details and vibrant colours.
Fluffwise, i like shades of grey instead of super good or super bad guys.

Imperial Fists, because in a year or two the focus of the Heresy will be on the Solar System and Terra and the IF were actually there. Better yet, the fluff mostly has them fighting the Iron Warriors (Book 3: Extermination & The Crimson Fist) and the Alpha Legion (Praetorian of Dorn). The AL kick off the Solar War and the IW lead the siege on the Imperial Palace.

Mechanicum is a good choice too (during the Heresy, when Mars has fallen, the government-in-exile gains a seat on the High Lords of Terra and becomes the Adeptus Mechanicus at the cost of some of its independence). You could always make an allied detachment.

Stone Gauntlet is an odd rite of war... it looks lousy on paper, but a lot of players have had a lot of luck with it. Email Michael at the Eye of Horus podcast if you need advice with it. Don't bother with the other IF-specific RoW, but a lot of the generic ones are fine (Orbital Assault, Pride of the Legion, Armored Breakthrough, and Brethren of Iron are the better ones).
>>
>>53952315
>Stone Gauntlet is an odd rite of war... it looks lousy on paper
This is false, on paper it's good, it's the breachers themselves that bring it down.
>>
>>53952352
That's what I mean, breachers are terrible on paper so a rite of war written about them should be bad too. But I've seen it work.
>>
>>53952237
Emperor's Children are quite flamboyant, with lots of gold detailing and white spots for colour- Chaos EC/DG leave lots of room for mutations and going nuts with colours and effects. SoH, WS and SW can all use 40K SW bits for converting and kitbashing (with a prominent wolf and/or trophy-taking theme present in all three).

Depending on personal fluff, any Legion can field Good Guys with Lots of Details and Vibrant Colours, but you need to justify it somehow.

10 man squads don't have any hitting power left by the time they reach the enemy (they'll take a few casualties on the way in). 15 is fine, though.

I'm not a fan of IF special units, but I do think they'll work well for you. The only problem is that the Tartaros terminators in BoP probably can't take shields. Get a set of Cataphractii (cheap enough on eBay) for shield-bearing shooty deep strikers. Also take the Tartaros squad you'll inevitably have, but kit them out for melee (a couple of them should have power fists or axes, but 2-3 single lightnight claws to stike at initiative are a good idea).

I get that it worked as intended. But people go on like they actually believe Erebus when he said it exceeded expectations. It didn't, they didn't kill Guilliman, they lost thousands of their own pointlessly, Kor Phaeron got his shit pushed in. Even Lorgar knows it, and tells Erebus as such. It did what was intended, and nothing more.
>>
>>53954941
Those people are probably bantering m8
>>
>>53954888
It was, but it could've been a bigger success if they hadn't gotten sloppy.

Ultimately the traitors failed because the Ultramarines and Dark Angels made it past the Ruinstorm and were going to reach Terra in numbers before the traitors could breach the Imperial Palace. More Word Bearers on Terra could've helped with the siege, and wiping out all of the Ultramarines on Calth (including Guilliman) would have made their arrival a lot less threatening.
>>
>>53954941
I'd say the Ruinstorm exceeded expectations. It was a huge asset to the traitors. You're right that Erebus and Kor Phaeron are incompetent though.

>they didn't kill Guilliman
I was under the impression that Kairos Fateweaver told them that they'd lose the war if Guilliman was slain?

Overall it was a great success. People will talk about how the WB fled but there was really nothing left to do at that point. They left all those troops to die fighting because that was the point. They were fanatic retards who couldn't be trusted. (that last bit was a hamfisted retcon but it's canon)

It's not bad, but I'm a grog who doesn't think a game can truly be good unless it's 10mm scale or smaller. Epic Armageddon and Battlefleet Gothic were great sets of rules by GW. There was enough open space to let positioning and movement flow.

40k/30k rules just barely manage to squeeze two large 28mm armies onto a reasonably-sized table. It's a bit cramped, so a lot of the most important tactics the rules allow involve blocking, like with transports (because you can't move within 1" of a unit unless charging or something along those lines. If you think of a game as lasting a short period of time, it works. There's just more emphasis on deployment and interaction between unit special rules than I'd like.

30k is pretty well balanced, even if you're using one of the non-marine armies. Not perfect, but no game is. It's fun, though, and that's what matters. If you're able to role-play just a little, battles can be very memorable.
>>
>>53955083
I wouldn't say it exceeded expectations. Its primary purpose, that is cordoning off the Ultramarines, ultimately failed, at the worst possible moment.
>>
>>53955083
>I was under the impression that Kairos Fateweaver told them that they'd lose the war if Guilliman was slain?

Close, but Fateweaver only said they'd lose if Lorgar killed Guilliman at Calth - that's what Kor Phaeron was "supposed" to do, but instead decided he'd try converting Guilliman to Chaos instead with an athame

Huron Blackheart is supposedly a big deal and has a force to rival Abaddon's. I don't know if he's done anything worthwhile since Badab though.
>>
>>53962453
Looks good, I like it.

No way Huron's forces actually rival Abbadon's in strength though. Sure, Huron is one of the most successful Chaos Lords in the setting, but the Black Legion is the single largest unified CSM faction in the Galaxy, with alliances and bonds to the other Legions and countless other factions in the Eye.

Time to tear my reductor list to shreds, I got advice a couple of threads ago and hopefully I have avoided a typical reductor cheese list.

I really like the knight and its fluff but I'm unsure whether this would be that guy territory, I don't feel like one knight is that guy. Sure it has ranged D but only for about 8 inches and its other ranged weapon is a single shot blast so prone to scatter.

Ordo Reductor 2500

Fair point but I think it's mentioned that Abaddon feels threatened by him. The Red Corsairs are the "size of a pre-Heresy legion" but that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. They're definitely a tier below the Black Legion's power though.

One, you probably don't need Meltabombs or the Axe on the Tech-priest, give him a chainfist instead and do better with S10 Irrad allowing you to ID Custodes bikes and Vorax and such. You really don't need 12 Thallax, cut both units to 3 and buy a bodyguard squad for him (probably conversion Beamer Myrmidons, since he's chilling with the artillery AFAIK. Get the Colossus Machine Spirit, the Demolishers don't need Dozers because Reductor.

You also lack severely for anti-air, so maybe losing a Demolisher, a couple of Ursarax and/or some random equipment or Occularis and buying something like a Lightning wouldn't be a terrible idea if your meta has flyers.

>One, you probably don't need Meltabombs or the Axe on the Tech-priest, give him a chainfist instead and do better with S10 Irrad allowing you to ID Custodes bikes and Vorax and such.
With rad grenades and S6 he will be ID'ing any T4 unit he faces in combat, which I think is enough. With T6, W4, 2+, 3++ and IWND he is pretty survivable. I'll consider a powerfist and a Myrmidon bodyguard if I can shift some points around but if something that is a serious threat manages to get that close to him with all the other stuff I've got about then I've pretty much lost anyway.

>You really don't need 12 Thallax, cut both units to 3 and buy a bodyguard squad for him (probably conversion Beamer Myrmidons, since he's chilling with the artillery AFAIK.
Yeah you are correct in that, he is basically sitting at the back repairing things, hence the lack of expensive CCW upgrades. I was told that minimum thallax squads are pretty cheesy for reductor which is why I avoided them, I'lll probably cut their and the Ursarax numbers down to make room for other stuff.

>Get the Colossus Machine Spirit
Good point, thanks.

>the Demolishers don't need Dozers because Reductor.
Another good point, I forgot this.

>You also lack severely for anti-air, so maybe losing a Demolisher, a couple of Ursarax and/or some random equipment or Occularis and buying something like a Lightning wouldn't be a terrible idea if your meta has flyers.
Yeah this is my weakness, trouble is I'm not really a fan of the Lightning, are there any other options available buried in the book somewhere? I'll probably get it if the other choice is no anti-air.

Min Thallax squads are only cheesy in the sense that not running min Thallax squads is about the single worst decision ever, given they're over 100 points per Rending Autocannon and get no better at scoring. Leave the extras at home.

Admech can also take the Avenger fighter, the Vulturax (which doesn't need Cortex Control if you're using it for AA, since it has special dispensation to target air units even if they're not the closest and you can keep it in the sky to stop charging, although I'd not recommend that) or the Droplite Team. They kill flyers really well with 10-20 BS2 Cover -1 snapshots per unit, and the best trick is cramming 12 into an Arvus Lighter with an Omnispex. Deepstrike in, Arvus shoves a TL heavy weapon into something, Hoplites get a guaranteed Spartan kill or torch an uppity flyer then run around scoring and generally being massive Haywire dicks.

I would seriously get the Archmagos an enginseer bodyguard at LEAST, he is sitting there being massive bait for deepstrikers or speedy Praetors/Primarchs and costs 350 points. Get two Enginseers and 8 Servitors with some Servo-arms, fix the arty much better and don't die to random plasma guns or Mortarion/Corax. I suggested the chainfist because it's about as expensive as MC Power Axe + Meltabombs and much better against pretty much anything.

The Knight is a Knight, it's good, people know them, people have counters somewhere, not too unsurprising but will pull its weight, especially if you stick the Enginseers close by.

Has anyone used massed Thallax? They look good on paper...but cost more than fucking terminators, wielding weapons with shitty AP.
And now Ursarax exist.
I believe the Mechanicum's problem is they have a completely schizofrenic choice of Troops with no real "normal" line soldier until the arrival of the Memetarii, but their selection of Fast and Heavy support has great units that is hard to choose among each other.
>>
>>53968756
Thallax are just terrible. They're awesome, and look badass, and do a decent job scoring and poking and blocking and generally doing every possible job aside from killing things, but any points you spend on any more than the bare minimum Thallax is half a Vindicator. Seriously, you could fill an entire normal FoC with HS choices for the cost of the two mandatory troops.

The Secutarii though, what a meme they are. I've never actually heard a report from anyone using Droplites, but there were some at the last Weekender tourney in the Geeks40k video. Anyone used the Peltasts? They look like what Tactical Blobs aspire to be, honestly.

I use Peltasts, normally as a squad of 20 with an Axiarch HQ to give them preferred enemy. So far they've been brilliant.
They can survive a lot of shooting with the rerolls 1's on saves and their shooting is great, bs5 with rerolls on 1s from PE. Against 3+ saves their hammershot can ruin squads in a single phase and against Custodes and 2+ their standard rounds cause a ridiculous amount of wounds to save against.
>>
>>53970359
The trick is to not care that you lose. You bled them, that's what counts. Also, literally nothing on the battlefield is worth an injury to a Primarch or a horde of dead Astartes to deal with. Even better, a pack of dead Custodians.

A backfield librarian, a forgelord, a herald, a delegatus in full regalia to show the favour of his Father, a praevian fighting side by side with Martian allies bedecked in Imperial heraldry, a siege breaker from one of the more ornate Legions, a master of signals...

I used to think old legionnaries were badasses in comparison to 40k marines, having annihilated xenos species, vanquished remnants of the Old Night and defeated empires of old not with Grey Knights or Deathwatch speshul gubbinz, but with bolter and blade.
Hell, the Chaplains of old were so zealous they could even spook the enemy.
But thinking of it again, those marines were probably trained just barely good enough. Mighty but mass produced, not an artisan's job.

You know how a single Company of Astartes can conquer a world single-handedly by smashing the centre of resistance, or spearhead massive invasions by their lonesome?
Imagine just how horrific the terrors of Old Night were before the Legiones put them to rest. Rangda, Hrud, Ork Empires beyond counting. Understand that the 40K Astartes being more experienced doesn't mean shit when they don't regularly stare down horrors that equal or surpass the collective horror brought by a dozen WAAAGHs, or a Hive Fleet, or a powerful Kabal.

The Legions were created to break the back of the Emperor's enemies, for Imperial Army units to mop up. The Chapters were founded to defend localised areas of space.

Very. There's too much AP3 artillery.

The possible exceptions (depending on what weapons your opponent has) are infiltrating armies, outflanking armies (e.g. Emperor's Children Maru Skara, with mostly shooty units), or gunlines with shooty terminators. Only Iron Warriors and Death Guard have good shooty terminators. They're necessary because they can defend the gunline from melee-oriented deep strikers. The gunline forces your opponent to come to you, so your footsloggers in front will actually get to fight.

Leman Russ.jpg
381KB, 812x1006px
So wtf is Wolf Cull? What happend to Russ, and what Goulding mean in his interview?
There’s the obvious question of what happened to Russ, and how he got so messed up, and loads of people are saying that he must have confronted Horus. That’d be a pretty safe bet, for my money. However, Horus being confronted by an angry Leman Russ and his Legion – that would probably need to happen a little bit later in order for it to make sense in Horus’ arc as the books build towards the Siege of Terra. We’ve seen the loyalist viewpoint, as in Corax’s and Russ’, and it left a lot of unanswered questions. That was deliberate, Gav and I were very keen to make sure we included that sense of ambiguity. The thing that I’m most excited about, the great thing about this story is that it’s like the Horus Heresy in a nutshell. We already know exactly what the outcome is, because Leman Russ gets messed up.

But do we ACTUALLY know what the outcome is? Because in Corax, Ezekyle Abaddon suddenly appears at Yarant and goes full-on trying to wipe out the wounded Space Wolves and Leman Russ. I hope that story would be something like Rogue One to A New Hope – the ending of this supposed ‘Wolf Cull’ could have that level of amazing, exciting, horrifying drama. All of the little concerns and arguments that fans are having about whether or not Leman Russ got a proper spin of the wheel at that point would suddenly be obliterated by the full telling of it! However, obviously he doesn’t kill Horus, and obviously his attempt fails, we know that from the background. The question of HOW he’s foiled and what exactly he MIGHT achieve, because we haven’t seen it from Horus’ point of view yet – that’s the thing that’s really exciting, and that’s what I’ve always loved about the Horus Heresy as a series. It’s going to be amazing, however it shakes out. I’m sure of that.”
>>
>>53980401
The Wolf Cull is a new plot development introduced in the Heresy, and which has been foreshadowed since Vengeful Spirit. Basically, Russ and his legion tried to stop Horus, but failed pathetically, got his wolves killed, got fucked up, got his sons fucked up, and had to be bailed by Corax.

What Goulding means in this interview is that we only see the prelude and the aftermath of the wolf cull itself; so we can only infer what happened. What we DO know, however, is that it's going to be a novella, written by Wraight, and knowing the jewery that is BL it's going to be an exclusive.
>>
>>53980401
He's just hyping whatever release is planned to cover the wolf cull. What you aren't sure about is unrevealed at present, other than the wolf cull is the Yarant campaign, which is when the Space Wolves get destroyed as an effective Legion.

Ehhh, that's a question of form and intent, not to mention time of writing; Animal Farm was a political polemic intentionally printed as a children's story. It's a screamingly clear allegory utterly on purpose.
Satan doing a deal with Satan on the planet Satan is just someone being a lazy, cheeky cunt.

You're not wrong though, there can be a lot to unpack in some of the HH novels due to the nature of the background being built from references. Just let's do it sliiiiightly cleverly please BL.

1: Build a Custode armed the way you want him to be.
2: Did you give him the Tribune upgrade, praesidium shield, solerite fist, digital laser and cyber familiar?
3: If not, do so
4: Remember to bring a cup for your opponent's tears and a band aid for the bruise when he smacks you

yes yes, the TS were teeming with loyalty. They were as bad as the WBs, they just didn't know it yet.

well good job he did. Magnus never had bad intentions, but he was a fool. His folly caused more trouble to humanity than any other Primarchs.

Ferrus Manus called for them to keep pushing and the RG and sallies fell back anyway despite him being in overall command of the operation. Makes me think he might have had a hunch about the whole thing to begin with, he could definitely be someone who could be relied on to keep his head in the game after all.

If I *think* it was made too early?

You objectively made it too early, the thread hadn't even begun auto saging, not to mention we only make a new thread when we're on page 10, which you'd know if you weren't a disgusting newfag.

P.S. Take off the name, you don't deserve it

>mechanicum player whining about primarchs
What the fuck was his reasoning there? Primarchs are great to fight with Mech, they're massively expensive, often worse at buffing than Archmagi, are utterly overkill in melee given a Praetor is quite enough to kill anything we have most times and are very vulnerable to Haywire and heavy damage artillery/Thanatars and such.

Also very satisfying to kill and if you take one down you just paid for a hundred iterations of your army in fluff, not mentioning the massive and easily exploded deathstar he probably came with.
Unless it's Corax or Morty, or something massively overpowered (so literally just Magnus) they're fine, and the ninja Primarchs are a nice challenge.
>>
>>53981375
the guy consistently whines about drop pods, about themed armies and about waac fags.
his lists are consistently filled with minmax good units, but just enough that he will try and defend himself as being fluffy and restrained.

Yeah but that was classic Dorn autismo

Horus knew that the war wouldn't end just because he had Terra; it's the reason why it took him 7 years to get there

NY is the Dark Angels. We're divided into two halves that hate each other, we're all immensely prideful and arrogant about how important our state/legion is, we're shady fuckers that nobody really trusts, and we even have the best baseball team.
