I dont think it will be that bad. 40k is still stupid expensive and plays more or less the same as it ever did. They basically took this weird abstract durian-shaped blob and buffed it down to a sphere with about 70% the original volume, and Im fine with that.

Personally Im still waiting for the other shoe to drop. The Power system seems woefully unbalanced, though I do like it in principle. The fact that Abaddon, who is still one of the scariest beatsticks in the game, has the same Power cost as a drop-pod is really weird.

After reading through the books, playing a bit, and all, 8th is actually pretty good stuff. Better balanced, and your super expensive Land Raider is no longer as easily chopped to bits in a 1 turn Melta Drop Pod with Fucking Vulkan'd. Your Tanks now have HeroClix like stats, where if it don't kill it, it'll get a bit weaker but still be in the fight. The Dreads are fucking AWESOME now. That's not the issue. Even when Tau players are brining lists that are build for 8th they are getting stomped by average joes list. People who actually lose to the Tau are saying they give them pity wins now or it was sheer dumb luck the Tau player won. There's no way in hell you would ever be able to have even a quarter of those people in a single series and have it make sense to 99% of the audience. There's not a story that would adequately introduce them that could do it while also easing into the setting at large.

The first season would be some backwater planet, more turn-of-the-20th-century than full feudal, and the first episode is a slice of that life. References to the Imperium are subtle enough to lead the uninitiated to want to know more, and satisfy and excite fans of the setting. A lot of iconography, but not dwelled on. We feel some tension driving forward regarding a local issue or two, threats to lives and livelihood.

At the end of the episode some Imperial Guard arrive, the sci-fi gear leagues more sophisticated than anything else on the planet, and we glean that the local strife mirrors something broader and more sinister warranting them coming here. Or perhaps it's simply a garrison/staging area set up out of caution. Or maybe that's all the locals are told it is.
The show plunges viewers into the culture of the Imperium of Man and how it clashes with the mostly-normal, vaguely nostalgic city-state/whatever. We get judicious expedition because a few marines are quartered in a native protagonist's house (maybe a family-owned hotel or inn). At some point Space Marines are spoken of and half-explained, but a little cryptically.
At the end of the season in one messy climax we see that the problem is worse than the locals, or viewers, were let know.
And then arrive the Space Marines who very decisively put a stop to whatever it was. Could be a bit of Chaos or a Genestealer cult, and naturally they're also behind the local problems from episode 1 to illustrate how insidious they really are.

And then starting next season you can start exploring the rest of the Imperium, with some B-plot stuff back on that starter planet now that it is thrust into really being part of the Imperium again.
