Starfinder General /sfg/

What class are you going to play first?

But will they look anywhere near as stylish?
>>
>>53948509

>they're PROBABLY that god.

Except that OG Navasi isn't said to look like Weydan, just have tattoos that are Weydan holy symbols. She could easily still have just been a Weydan follower.

>It's like Chekhov's Gun, if you mention the rifle hanging above the mantle it's probably going to be used later in the story.

It was already used in the story. OG Navasi's Weydan following plus her general attitude inspired current-Navasi to live a better life, to stop feeling sorry for herself at the fact that the Diaspora and the life she chose to lead didn't live up to her childish expectations while at the same time reminding current-Navasi to keep fighting for the little guy anyway, because it's something that has to be done.

At this point it doesn't matter if OG Navasi was actually Weydan, and I'd actually argue that it would be better if it's never answered at all. Some mysteries are better when they're not solved. And in either case it's not actually important to current-Navasi if OG Navasi was Weydan. Either OG Navasi was Weydan, and so inspired current-Navasi; or she wasn't, and still inspired Navasi.

Navasi loses nothing for *thinking* that OG Navasi might have been Weydan, and gains a slight bit of mystery and character motivation. How is that bad?

Actually, this is different. the Celebrity culture in /pfg/ regards specific characters and their players. What >>53948705 and I are talking about is in-universe celebrities - I doubt either of us gives a shit who in /sfg/ wants to bang them.
>>
>>53948649
Same. Either that, or I try to convert some Pathfinder stuff. An Operative Bloodrager type of thing with the Shadow Bloodline and some Shadowdancer thrown in could be really cool. Doubt it's doable on release, though.

Would prefer it to be "unarmed" but that just adds another layer of complexity.

Oh, absolutely. Tearing rifts into the Planes leaking planar radiation all over the place will inevitably taint a couple births, producing anything from Undine to Aasimar to Tieflings. Good luck if you tear a whole into Abaddon, the Apocalypse Realm.

>>
>>53948797
Hmm, I'm now imagining a 1930s serial reel about the latest adventures of a Starfinder character.

Give Starfinder a 1930s pulp feel and it will be perfect.
>>
>>53948733
Actually, I think it's interesting that we know that if you want some magic, you can get that with any class via Archetype.

But what if you don't want magic at all? Will there be Archetypes for that? I can think of only two (class-specific) archetyoes in Pathfinder that allowed you to do that, for the Ranger and Paladin respectively, but they were far more in-depth than the generalized Starfinder Archetypes appears to be intended to be.

>>
>>53948842
The problem with what you're suggesting is that archetypes are meant to be broad-scope in starfinder, and only two out of seven classes will have spellcasting (with a third bearing supernatural powers). there's going to be plenty of options to play non-casters.
>>
>>53948843

We're a little over a month out from release and we've got a thread full of hungry anons who want a game. How long do you think it'll be before the first /sfg/ game starts recruiting? I give it about two, maybe three weeks before the first Starfinder games get run; enough time for the GM to work out the system and put together a barebones plot.

I think what I'm most interested in will be how various users of necromancy will intereact with each other. aside from wanting to do Event Horizon in Starfinder I have this idea for a pair of recurring enemies. Basic premise is they are Bonnie and Clyde style outlaw/killers who are famous for wielding matching a matching pair of pistols. Such was their love they were blessed by an unknown god to essentially become liches with their pistols becoming inidestructable phylacteries.

If a man and a woman each wields the respective pistol their souls are consumed and the souls of the lovers inhabits their bodies and they will keep going on a rampage until someone stops them. The last time this happened they both turned their guns on each other which allowed them to become part of their pistols to begin with.

Mechanic buddies come in two flavors; droids and AI. Since anyone can put points into Pilot ([Insert Vehicle Here]) I can only assume you could install your AI onto the bike or car.

Now it's just a matter of having the right kind of campaign to allow it to happen like fighting mad max biker gangs on Akiton or something.

So do I. I prefer them braised with a strong red wine glaze, garnished with cilantro and beets. Younger ones taste less gamy, but older ones make for nice roasts. Elderly ones actually tend to be more robust in flavor but require extra simmering to reduce the connective tissue to a jelly which them leaves the meat stringy but exceptionally tender.

>>53948496
Dude....just give up. These people need to blame someone besides themselves for their sad pathetic lives and they have latched on to women. A convenient target because these freaks probably can't sustain normal relationships to begin with.

They are looking to get triggered, and they are looking for any possible support for their "i'm only a failure because the evil vaginas keep me down" mentality.

Considering the nature of the Drift it's very possible more than a few are stuck in the Drift along with other types of outsiders/celestials.

So imagine if they get out of the Drift. I could see them starting cults to keep doing what they normally do. Or you could go Xenosaga and try to use a celestial as a battery.

Han Solo never liked Luke until the very end of the movie, and that wasn't so much liking Luke as it was realizing the importance of the Rebellion's cause. Leia liked Luke the way your average politician likes a soldier, up until he proved useful. The only people that really liked him were friends he had since before the movie, and you can see an explicit change between Luke talking with what's-his-face on Yavin and Luke talking to Han for most of the movie.

A lot of it seems to be based around individual class balance and the assumptions of how the game works. for instance, no more 1-9 level casters, just 1-6, at least in the core book. Some bloke thinks there'll be a way to get ninth level casting in core, but they've been pretty exacting on stating that levels 7-9 spells won't be available to the core classes.

Past that, it's bringing martials in line with the expected norms of the system. in Pathfinder, a wizard has access to (limited) flight by level 5, a lot of utility abilities, a mess of skill points, and the ability to set the field using things like walls and other AoEs. Meanwhile, martials at the same level of the wizard are greatly limited in their options - they can theoretically do combat maneuvers, but those often aren't worth it, and can become downright impossible versus larger enemies. sometimes literally impossible.

But then you add in the equipment to Starfinder. First off, it's not gated behind spellcasters like magical equipment in Pathfinder; anybody with the right materials and know-how can make a gun or suit of armor. further, said mundane equipment is capable of a lot more; gas grenades for area denial, rocket launchers for AoE damage, the ability to hack into things, cloaking devices, and all that jazz, and much of it comes from the class features or things the martial characters can get easy access to - the soldier class preview makes a point of stating that jetpacks are fairly easy to get by level 5.

I did the math not too long ago - a gun we got a preview about in the hands of a soldier can deal about 125 damage per round at level 10 - a pure blaster sorcerer can achieve about 108, and can't reload once they blow their power.

It's small things, but it's so damn many small things that they've added up into a mountain, and that's what Pathfinder needed to become balanced.

But hey, worst comes to it, we can just ransack Starfinder for rules to make pathfinder better.
>>

>>
>>53957934
Appreciate the link. Looks like they are taking the vitality system out of the old d20 star wars and going ranged/guns hit touch ac, everything else hits normal AC. Tack on a tweaked pf unchained combat system to deal with iterative attacks. Not that these are necessarily bad, but I guess I had higher expectations for an overhaul. I suppose this does make it pretty compatible with current pathfinder, though.

>>53958030
Bringing the game down to just 6th level spellcasting is certainly a start. We already do that in our pathfinder games. Mundane equipment bloat will help, though it already has come quite a way in pathfinder. God I hope they just fix drawing and using equipment from being a move action, but with revised action economy from iterative attacks, it might not be an issue as much.

I can't help but get a little hyped.
>>
>>53958030
>a gun we got a preview about in the hands of a soldier can deal about 125 damage per round at level 10 - a pure blaster sorcerer can achieve about 108
Sounds to me that it's going to have a ton of HP bloat and that caster supremacy isn't going to be solved at all in that casters can avoid said bloated HP system entirely.
The fact you think blaster wizards are the problem and not the utility isn't helping your point.
>>
>>53958522

Not the guy you're responding to but utility isn't locked away behind spells. You can get upgrades to your guns that cause people to freeze in place let alone grenades that can do all kinds of stuff as well
>>
>>53958448
>out of the old d20 star wars
Funny you should mention that; Own K C Stevens was actually one of the designers for that old star wars game, so if you want a brief look into how things might go, that's a good source.

I think the biggest mundane thing I'm excited about - and it's stupid that I'm so exited about it - is the encumbrance rules. Instead of tracking weight on your character, different items have a certain level of bulk when you're carrying them, from 1 (shit around the size of pistols) all the way up to 4 (like miniguns or big fuck-off cannons), and you can carry up to double your bulk value before you're completely stopped dead. It's stupid, but it shows they're making an effort to adjust all the small stuff most D20 games forget about.

>>53958522
I don't think blasters are an issue in the least; it was an interesting shorthand for comparing what they can do first and foremost. A technomancer will only be able to contest a operative for the "hacker" spot if it's using severely limited spells for it, but they make up for this issue by essentially swapping on the fly; the hacker can hack and work with a lot of tech, but the technomancer can go off and do other things if that's already covered. It finally feels like the classes are being balanced against one another, rather than tossed into a pot wholesale. Thos people who focus on a thing become better at it than the naturally generalist casters are, and that's fine. Good even, given how wizards and clerics could obviate the fighter niche in 3.5 and most of Pathfinder's life.

Since equipment is providing the utility role that formerly only casters had the privilege to employ is there anything stopping casters from...just using equipment AND have magic?
Like your blaster example. If a weapon can do more damage than pure magic, why wouldn't the caster just be using the weapon instead? And using their magic for what magic does best: things mundane can't do.

I think the central problem is the the caster>martial disparity hasn't been solved. Martial can use equipment to provide utility? So can casters, and casters have magic on top of that.

Won't be able to make a judgement until the rules come out, but judging from Paizo history of balancing they don't know shit about balancing. Expecting caster supremacy to remain, even if the gap is narrowed.
>>
>>53958642

That depends on the scope of the magic involved. We havn't gotten a list of spells yet so we don't really know what to expect from them.
>>
>>53958707
I'm like 90% sure there's 7-9th level spells, but the classes don't get access to them.
>>
>>53958764
That's confirmed. they specifically said the level 7-9 spells are only there to facilitate cross-compatibility, such as if someone wanted to play a sorcerer in Starfinder.

that was quite a while ago, though, so that "only" may have changed. I hope it hasn't, but this is Paizo.

>Gnoll Krieg.

Awesome picture but it triggers my autism. Gnolls are already naturally freakish and violent. More appropriate creature for Krieg's character would be a werewolf. Sadly werewolves don't exist anymore so he'd just look like a furry either way.
>>
Did they introduce HP being split into Stamina, Health, and Resolve in an earlier Pathfinder supplement? It sounds vaguely familiar.
>>
>>53958923
Nah.
>>
>>53959291
Maybe I'm thinking of Fantasycraft.
>>
>>53958923
It's an idea that's been tried a few times before by a few different systems; not Pathfinder, though.
>>
>>53958642
>what's stopping casters from using magic and equipment?

Feats. In the gun article, they go over it

>While other classes can chase the soldier in terms of feats, they begin at least 4 behind, and never get access to the soldier's combat oriented class-features, which are on top of additional bonus feats and getting all the specializations free.

>Now at 5th, a human envoy can have spent his 1st, 3rd, 5th, and human bonus feat -- that is, ALL feats, to have the same damage options as the soldier. Of course by now the soldier has 3 universal feats, and two combat feats, and a gear boost, and two style technique powers.
>>
>>53959419
The problem is that yes, the Soldier does more damage than everyone else. But casters still have more versatility, and that's always been the case. Plus getting more feats has never in practice been an advantage because most feats are shitty trap options.
>>
>>53959466
>But casters still have more versatility
I think you're vastly underestimating the impact that high tech gear will have.
>>
>>53959466
I think science fiction will help bring that Versatility to all the classes.

>Feats
Looks like they reworked them a bit, because they say that a lot of them are locked behind the classes, so you want be able to play a Caster and completely overshadow the Martials.

>>53959419
This being a game that's mostly about combat, why would anyone play the envoy?
>>
>>53957764

At least equipment is accessible by most everyone.
>>
>>53958590
Huh, interesting. I guess it won't be a surprise if a science-fantasy game will feel a lot like the various star wars systems that have been out over the years. Encumbrance, as you describe it, sounds like a FFG's SW style. A lot of the hassle of the encumbrance systems of old were managing those things which make sense in number-crunching survival dungeon crawls and the whole "Oregon Trail" simulation. My experience with it in pathfinder was mostly in having to calculate how screwed villains in armor got when fatigue/exhausted by a certain spellslinger pc. It certainly would be a lot less useful in most space opera games.
>>
>>53959892
The Envoy is supposed to hand out buffs in combat.
>>
>>53958923
Resolve no, but Stamina and HP is pretty much a less lethal variant of Wounds and Vigor from Ultimate Combat.
>>
>>53960108
Then why does it only get Talents and skills and literally nothing else? It seems like a skillmonkey that can be built to do stuff because stuff.
>>
>>53960202
According to devs, talents can give them things like "As a move action, buff all allies" or "As a standard action, attack the enemy and give all allies bonuses when attacking that enemy".
>>
>>53960207
>>53960202
They can even grab a (fairly shitty) form of healing through a talent for that.

To be honest, it seems best to think of the new game play style like if you were playing nu-XCOM. Setting up ambushes, all those status effects, making sure enemies have to come to you. Everyone has many more toys to mess around with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lNsZpx8LYE

I think the Science Fiction setting offers a lot more things than what people are used to with normal Fantasy settings.

However, I will have this battle in my campaign. It's too awesome not too.

>>
>>53960383
>nu-XCOM
While XCOM 2 was a tremendous let-down, I don't see a problem in this. In fact, being sent on missions is probably going to be a fairly common way to "deploy", and for GM:s, that's actually going to be a fairly good way to handle "insertion" into the events of a campaign/scenario.

A lot neater than depending on the players taking your hooks, or straight-up railroading them saying "This is the adventure we're playing".
>>
>>53960247
It annoys me, a little bit. When I was playing Iron Gods our party mostly ignored Cassandalee since she's both incredibly generic and a coward that refuses to her use powers to help. The thought of giving her the power of a deity at the end was repulsive.

Don't forget the goddess of steampunk and clockwork, Brigh. There's a reason they are called TRIune after all.

Opens up an interesting question. How are governments working in Spacefinder? Can we expect it to be just be Space-Feudalism, idealized democracy, ridiculous gommunism, and insane fascism? Tropes all around, or can we expect to see something actually interesting and believable, like functional fascism, corrupt democracies, failing gommunism and, of course, Space Feudalism?

I plan to do a "PC's are scoundrel types who've stolen the first ship to have a prototype drift engine" sort of thing, giving them ultimate freedom to travel and get into trouble. I need to see how the drift rules work first before I can really solidify anything, since the standard method of space travel in my setting is going to be point-to-point drift gates. I also plan on the ship coming equipped with a hostile AI that'll make fun of them and constantly try to trick them, but I need to see the hacking rules to know how to handle it. I don't want to make it easy for them to remove the AI (because where's the fun in that?), but I don't want to just fiat a "No, you fail." either.

The only really solid quest/adventure plan I have so far is the stealing of the ship itself. The PC's are going to be scoundrel types on a frontier planet as the planet is being overtaken by Generic Space Empire (I'm thinking either bugs or bots), which is in the process of locking down the planet's drift gate and securing their control. Like most outlaws (and PC's), the group will likely want off-planet, and they'll have some contacts who've heard of this new prototype engine (coincidentally, something the invaders have no idea even exists: they just want this planet as a strategic staging area). I plan to have a few semi-railroady choice points... things like "The guys who were securing the weapons got ambushed, and the truck with most your crew is going one way while the one carrying the guns are going the other. You've only got time to rescue one before way too many people to fight arrive on scene." And depending on what they do, they'll either get a larger crew (including some useful specialists) and have a weaponless ship, or get weapons for their ship but only have a skeleton crew to run it. Or try for both and probably get obliterated, but maybe (if they're lucky) get both.

It was mentioned several times. The book will have a special chapter for how do you try class conversion if you REALLY want to, but it's explicitly a bad idea and not recommended.
The game is very mechanically different, heck, there's a strict limit on 2 attacks in a full-attack that no game element lets you sidestep in Starfinder.
It's less compatible with PF than 3.5 was.
>>
>>53981742
>The book will have a special chapter for how do you try class conversion if you REALLY want to
Fuck, I hope not. There's no need to waste space in the book (especially in a genre that needs all the page space it can get) on what really should be a free companion PDF.
>>
>>53982022
The devs already said on the forums the chapter for conversion is in.
Too late to hope.
>>
>>53982028

>>

>>53982028

Don't want to burn that bridge too early with the shitfinder players, you can't let them know that their game is going to be put on life support and mothballed in favor of drawing in the bigger sci-fi fans.

It's really well time too with Star Wars popularity booming and Marvel going Cosmic. Fantasy is falling to the wayside again, you can thank Hollywood for that, much like the way modern-day Comic Book Heroes are getting tired and exhausting.
>>
>>53982022
I would agree, but Paizo has already said that there's going to be a chapter. It's pretty bullshit. Pathfinder/Starfinder conversion/crossover should either be a simple (and free) .pdf, or it should be it's own full-blown book. Cramming it into the Core Rulebook of Starfinder is pretty BS.

Especially since it should be obvious to everyone by now that it's not going to be a cakewalk to convert stuff. They'll pretty much just have to detail new classes and be like "Oh, well THESE aren't REALLY part of the CORE".

Might as well just bite the bullet and make them proper classes, then. There's no way you'll easily convert classes AND archetypes.
>>
>>53982095

I think there should be no conversion rules. Leave pathfaggotry where it belongs; in a dumpster.
>>
>>53982137
As far as I understood, it won't be proper conversion rules, but rather a notice saying "you basically have to homebrew most of it" and a collection of advice on how not to fuck up too hard in the process, as well as a few suggestions on how to handle features absolutely incompatible with Starfinder mechanics, such as Flurry of Blows.
>>
>>53982227

So basically almost no one is going to use it?
>>
>>53982456
I'd imagine there will be some people willing to use that.
Heck, I might try a shot at converting Psionics.
>>
>>53982227

The bigger sci-fi fans won't touch Starfinder with a ten-foot pole, let's not kid ourselves here. Starfinder is a kitchen sink science-fantasy setting, the only really cool thing it does is to take all the iconic D&D-type fantasy stuff and put it in space.

Which is really cool, I think, but let's not pretend that it's going to pull sci-fi fans, or even people that are fans of Numenera or Warhammer 40k. Completely different appeals.
