The god cycle is complete.
>>
>>53940393
I like the Scarab God in a vacuum but considering the fact that everyone thought he was going to be a combo with the other two and he isn't makes me sad. Also, worst art of the cycle.
>>
>>53940430
It makes up for it by having an absolutely ridiculous activatable ability.
>>
Really cool cycle

Im definitely building zombie tribal Scarab God for edh

I am surprised at how well put together this cycle is. The Amonkhet gods were such trash and this makes them look even worse.

Locus is a completely new spin on UR that doesn't involve casting spells.

Scorpion rivitalizes a lot of old wither cards much like Hapatra, except more on color.

Scarab is a mix of every non mill strategy in its colors. Which is refreshing. Except that we already have two Dimir Zombie commanders.

I think they were hoping for the three gods to potentially go infinite when on the board together, something like:

for the Scarab God.

Eh, the locust god is actually just a new spin on niv mizzet or nekusar in practice I believe. But hes very cool anyway and probably will draw less hate in commande I assume as he isnt a 1 card combo like Niv and not as easy to kill with and fewer colors than Nekusar

>>
>>53940779
I actually think scarab looks the worst because the scarab part is so rounded and cartoony.
>>
>>53940815

Because there is more to the text of the card than the creature type it makes. Nothing about the card says RG.
>>
>>53940815
Because everything it's doing is U/R other than the creature type of the token, and G/R would not be having flying tokens that are made on drawing cards, nor an ability to draw first then discard.
Just pretend they're locust-shaped elementals if it bugs you that much
>>
>>53940815
The locust god's locusts consume magic (its purpose in the hours is to devour the hekma) which is why theyre blue and not red I suppose.
>>
>>53940855
>blue and not red
Not green i meant. I can see locusts as red fine enough
>>
>>53940855

It opens up token strats for UR, which I consider new. Midwrack liege makes these guys 3/3s and slaps your commander down for 2 mana cheaper.

Maybe it makes sense that they don't combo. Why would Nicol Bolas, the next best bad guy behind Phyrexia have subordinates who could amass infinite power and usurp him? Feels more likely flavor wise to have disjointed gods who can still work decently together. Reach?
>>
>>53940910
Delver is a blue because its an abomination created by science. Theres a flavor reason its blue. There is a reason this guy is blue too though so.
>>
>>53940937

Point being that insects don't have to be any specific color, because like you said there can always be a flavor reason.
>>

WHY IS EVERYONE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE LOCUST GOD NOT BEING GREEN WHEN THE OTHER TWO ARE ALSO INSECT BASED?
>>
>>53940989

Because it makes insect tokens, and clearly insects are only allowed to be green. Ignore all those non-green insects, insects are nature and so are green.

Scorpions are centered in black and also they are just hurty animals which feels red. Scarabs were black in Amonkhet and U was one of the zombie colors in this block because of rmbalm and now eternalize so scarab god colors made sense. The justification fot the blue in the locust god flavorfully is a little more abstract.

Just drunk and rolling with the autism
>>
>>53941100
Funnily enough they commented on the flavor fuck up here in the article for the locust god. The god is meant to take down the Hekma, yet the card representing its protection stops what he does very specifically.
>>
>>53940393
That's the cycle?
Only Bolas color gets gods?
>>
>>53941040
>abstract
I dunno, flying is pretty self explanatory for being blue and card draw is just consumption or desire for knowledge. It's a bug shaped god that spawns a plague to eat shit.

The only fucking reason people are getting mad is because the insect type tokens when shit like Talrand and Docent of Perfection exist. It's dumb. Don't pigeon hole design for your autism.
>>53941034

>>53941049
>>53941096
Okay but this stupid thing and the entire fucking Delver line of creatures. Insects are also in white what are you gonna do about that?
>>
>>53941127
Yes? They are Bolas's gods after all and were told specifically that there were originally 8 gods.
>>
>>53941127
Yes.
>>
>>53941127

Yes, we've known this since very early on in Amonkhet. There were 8 gods, but 3 went away somewhere.
>>
>>53941127
Yes.
Originally there were 8.
That's 5+3.
>>
>>53941144
To be fair not everyone reads the story
>>
>>53941136
Flying can be used by all colors when necessary flavorwise except green which still gets it rarely like when dragons mattered in Tarkir. I think locusts could be characterized as squarely red so i think if the god didnt need to be UR the tokens themselves could be monored.
>>
>>53941123
They could have put as a passive ability "Damage can't be prevented" as that is still in red's flavor and removed flying since the other two don't. But that would be too wordy even though they thought 9 lines of text would be ok for the scarab god.
>>
>>53941140
>>53941142
>>53941144
>>53941148
Oh ok, cool. I can understand why they went away though, these 3 are fucking ugly compared to the others.
>>
>>53941136
>>53941177
Also the abstract part is that its blue because of its association with the hekma, and the locusts are specially designed to take it down. So in other words its kinda the same reason blue gets counterspells, its really good at dealing magic. Of course the actual card's abilities are solidly UR.
>>
>>53941177
I would still characterize locusts' as black since they are synonymous with famine and black is the color that is opposite of G/W the color which heavily likes agriculture
>>
God damn I don't know what to play in Standard anywhere.
>>
>>53941212

These ones are ugly because Bolas twisted them to make them that way, which seemingly also changed what animal they represent. Nissa has said that all the gods were "mammals, birds or reptiles" before Bolas came around.
>>
>>53941212
They didnt just go away, bolas killed them and stored them away himself, warping them to be used during the hours. They also werent always bugs, all the gods were originally reptiles, mammals, and birds. So bolas fucked em up good.
>>
>>53941242
Which means at least one of these three was a bird.
>>
>>53941242
>>53941246
>insects are baaaaad
nissa is hitler
>>
>>53941255

Or Kefnet was just really lonely.
>>
>>53941231
Oh yeah given absolutely no context id place locusts as green (theyre all about eating) or black (plague/famine). But i can see red if we think of them as being mindless overconsumers. The distinction from black would be that black does it for self benefit, and green wouldn't overconsume. It depends on how you want to characterize locusts. But i agree the first thought is black given no other context.
>>
>>53941255
Not necessarily, Kefnet is an Ibis.
>>
>>53941255
Probably the Locust god. Most likely easier to turn something with wings into something else with wings

If Amonkhet survives it's solely because Nicol Bolas doesn't give a shit. He's a busy dragon, he doesn't have the time nor a reason to track down and murder every last living thing on the plane. He swoops in, picks up his army he's been stockpiling, curbstomps the superfriends and rolls out to work on his next plot of interplanar fuckery. He doesn't even have to lift a finger for this all to work, since, in a little less than 2 days work 60 years ago, he set all this up to work automatically. Now all he has to do is come back to collect his army. He couldn't care less if the people pick themselves back up and rebuild civilization. What are they gonna do, come after him?

It would have to be Mardu because this card is literally too good to not play

You're looking at more of a midrange type deck that curves into the Scorpion God, then uses him as a finisher/huge value generator with his triggered ability

Fair point, forgot about that gem. That shit really is way too good to not toss in some white. Just a bit of a shame that I won't be drawing things when using Dust, but I suppose exiling instead of destroying is going to be pretty relevant against most creature strategies, considering Claim being a thing, too.

Dust allows you to target at your own discretion so you don't have to exile anything you don't want. Even more handy if you are sticking -1/-1 counters on your own guys, you won't be forced to exile them.

I'm curious if we're going to get a rare cycle of dual lands. I really want to build a Naya gods deck, but the mana base isn't quite there to do more than splash a third color. Even with the checklands coming in with dinosaur island, losing the bfz and soi block lands hurts a bit too much.

Are all of you really that willing to swallow every fucking large turd that WotC shots out? Don't complain about commander and then say that meme line "it's good in limited." It just sounds like "It was born without eyes or ears, but at least it still has a mouth to scream."

Look at the comment section of Mythic Spoiler sometime. Every single card will be defended.
>>

Why?
>>
>>53949331

Because people are stupid, have no idea how to evaluate magic cards, and seem to think that everything is good in limited.
>>
>>53940884

You have to cast it from the Command Zone once before you can use Mindwrack Liege to put it down so you're not getting your commander out faster that way, but after that it's a very nice combo, especially since he'll keep coming back to your hand

you can -1/-1 or sacrifice target creature. If your playing another colors like red you can attach a Skin Invasion. Kill it get a 3/4 Insect horror. Exiled Slither Blade and get a 4/4 unblock able creature.

If there's anything Liliana hates, it's a Demon, especially Razaketh, the symbol of her contract.

Red gets nice cards once in a while. The problem is that when others colors get broken cards, red gets merely good cards, and when other colors get weak cards, red gets unplayable trash.

why is both the cmc and the activation cost of this one more than necessary by anyone's standards?

I just started playing magic last week and even I realize that making the Scarab a 4 drop would be broken as fuck. Unless you're talking about the Locust idk why he's a 6 drop.
>>
>>53950979
Because repeatable looting+a flying hasty 1/1 token is worth 4 cmc, and the evasion is worth bumping the thing to 6 instead of being 5 like the other two.

>Target activated or triggered ability you don't control

Should have been a "May" clause instead
>>
>>53951680
i think you can cycle it without countering anything. Nothing is technically stopping you from activating cycle when there is nothing on the stack.
>>
>>53951709

Won't the cycling be forced to counter itself, denying you the draw?
>>
>>53951709
Corner case, if they use an ability that you want to have go off but still need to dig for a card that isn't that one, but you need it for this exact instance to interact with the ability in some way.
It's really the only time you'll ever need that may clause, and honestly I cannot think of a single scenario that you would.

>>53951734
>You don't control
>>
>>53951766

>>You don't control

I don't think you get what I'm arguing.

I'm saying that the card would have been better and more fun if they had replaced "You don't control" with a "You MAY counter..." because that way you could use it to counter you own negative triggers while not forcing the cycle to counter itself
>>
typically if you do want your opponents ability to go off, the opponent will not have that card in deck.
>>
>>53951851

What are you talking about?

Are you not getting it?
>>
>>53951813

i was talking about the corner case. If there is an ability that's good for you, chances are, that won't be a card the opponent will be using.
>>
>>53951919

Have you not been following the reply chain or something, it's not very long.

Because if not then I can explain it to you since you apparently have very weak reading comprehension

It started here: >>53951680 where I said that I would have preferred if they had replaced the text about it only countering abilities your opponents control with a "May" clause. Because then you would be able to use it to counter, say, the trigger on your own Pact of Negation or Demonic Pact or whatever.

Then this person: >>53951709 responded and apparently misunderstood what I was getting at since he either thought I was saying that you couldn't cycle it in a vacuum as is or that you would be able to use it in a vacuum without it countering itself if it didn't have the "You don't control" clause.

Then (I think) you came in and restated the "You don't control" clause
>>
if it said "you may counter target activated or triggered ability", could you choose to counter its own cycle?

if that's the case i think they might have designed it this way to skip a click on their shitty magic online program thing where everything takes 40 minutes to execute, which is a shame because it's cool to counter your own drawbacks triggers.
>>
>>53952004

No, like I said, I wanted the "You don't control" text replaced with a "May" because then you could counter your OWN negative triggers and if you just removed the "You don't control" without replacing it with "May" then the cycle would be forced to counter itself
>>
>>53952071

>if it said "you may counter target activated or triggered ability", could you choose to counter its own cycle?

Yes

>if that's the case i think they might have designed it this way to skip a click on their shitty magic online program thing where everything takes 40 minutes to execute

Honestly I think it's more likely that they did it this way because it's less confusing for the babies they so often try to market toward, but your explanation could factor into it as well.
>>
>>53952073
i said i wasn't actually responding to you. it was to >>53951766
but i forgot to link the post. This person suggested that the only time this might be bad, is if there is an ability your opponent controls, that you want to go off, but still want to draw. My reply is that the opponent won't have cards with effects you want to go off.
