A long running campaign of mine had a sudden catastrophic end just an hour ago.
Story time thread.

>Homebrew DnD to work with a TES setting
>PCs (Khajiit Monk and Argonian Necromancer) quickly become friends
>They have some adventures together
>They find out that the Argonian was created by an old necromancer who cloned himself
>The old Necromancer wanted a younger host for his soul, created a number of clones
>Eventually two other players join the adventure (Alter and Naga)
>Party is separated, The Argonian and the Naga players venture to Molag Bal's realm of rape
>Have an encounter where the players think the party was reunited, but it was one of the clones voiced by the Argonian's player
>They defeat the clone
>The Khajiit no longer trusts people who look like that Argonian
>Party is eventually actually reunited
>Altmer dies during the reunion encounter
>Khajiit player stealth murders the Argonian and Naga players
>Khajiit is then shot dead by wizard allies of the other players
>TPKO
>Couple of sessions away from the showdown with the BBEG
>I've been running the campaign for over a year

This happened 1 hour ago

I could have railroaded the session a bit to avoid this catastrophe, but now, knowing that shit can go south and just end like this makes tabletop RPGs exciting.

Has anyone had it worse, though?
