unless he's reprinted....
>>
I've been working on building a lot of new decks lately, and it's become something of a hobby... Moreso than actually playing them, since most of the decks I don't even own the cards for. I'd like to be able to build decks during break at work, but the place I work doesn't have wifi in the breakroom so I can't access online card databases.

Do any of you have recommendations for downloadable card databases, preferably some kind of program with a good search function? That's really all the functionality I need, anything else like making proxy sheets or being able to make a deck list within the program is bells and whistles I'll never use.
>>
>>53918959
If he is reprinted it will be in a masters set. That means he will go down by maybe 10 to 20 bucks and start rising in price slowly afterwards again.

I mean check out his price history, the reprint in MM2 had almost no effect at all.
>>
>>53918545
3-0'd (two games post board) a Grixis Shadow deck today with my Merfolk today. Is this actually a good matchup or did I just get lucky? Haven't played modern in a while.

>>53919023
The reprints aren't for a permanent price drop, they're a short sale on the cards that get reprinted :^)

That new 2U curse card looks legit. Doubles every mill spell, and mills 1 for each card that makes it into your opponent's GY naturally (spell cast, creature dies, etc)
>At the beginning of each end step, enchanted player puts the top X cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard, where X is the total number of cards put into his or her graveyard this turn.
>>
>>53920639
I'm actually fairly impressed by this, and it should definitely be tested.
Normally an effect like this would be pretty shit, but inbetween basic actions (bolts cast, fetches played, etc.) and the fact that mill has a lot of accumulative milling (crab, mesm orb, scribe), not to mention a timely Trap, it could provide a hefty punch off the bat.

Did everyone just forget this card exists? You don't even need to run a mill shell at all. This + Traumatize is a win every time. Just run it in a control shell. Two card combos are good.
>>
>>53921003
>BR Delver
How do you play Delver without Blue?

Also DSG is just better than Delver now.
>>
>>53921071
If they have an odd number of cards in their deck the combo will leave them with one card left, and one more turn to kill you.
>>
If nothing hit their yard in addition, sure
>>
>>53921180
Er, UB, I meant. I blame the heat wave. And I know ds is better, but I'm on a budget and will have to upgrade piecemeal

>>53917464
Hating Skred Red? Why?
>>
>>53921250
I think for a budget deck it might be better to just run straight UB Control, or build UR Delver. Delver really wants to be in the same deck as bolt, and discard is always negative tempo, even if it is efficient.

I'm a bit confused about these
I'm thinking you only get 2 mana with Gift and Verdant, but 3 mana for overgrowth? Can anyone clarify?
>>
>>53916145
Not too keen on spending so much money on scalding tarns, would substituting them with wooded foothills be a mistake or is it passable?..
>>
>>53927681
Yes it's 2 with gift and verdant, and 3 with overgrowth. Read the cards, it's pretty straight forward.
>>
>>53928088
Depends on the deck. If you're mostly red, then sure. If you have blue then it's gonna be worse, but playable.

maze of ith.jpg
67KB, 312x445px
>>53927681
yes, that's how they work. the first will let your land produce two mana, and overgrowth allows for a total of 3 mana. specifically, the first gives the land a brand new activated ability that lets it tap for two mana, the others trigger when you tap it for mana and produce additional mana.

You could put gift of paradise on a land that doesn't normally produce mana (like pic related) and it would be able to tap to produce mana, but the other enchantments would basically do nothing because the land doesn't have a natural mana ability.
>>
>>53928126
Mostly red/black so I guess it's fine? Blue just for snapcaster/tasigur activations. and serum visions.
>>
>>53927681
As someone who still plays with Utopia Sprawl, this is correct. Overgrowth's ability does not replace the enchanted land's ability: for example tapping a Mountain enchanted with Overgrowth gives you RGG.

Gift of Paradise adds an alternative ability that taps for two mana, and Verdant Haven is similar to Overgrowth and Utopia Sprawl in that it triggers when you tap for mana, meaning you end up producing two mana.

If you want an ability like this in modern Sprawl is your best bet. You should be playing things early for 3-4 mana, not waiting around until you have 3 mana to start ramping.
>>
>>53928160

Tron. Fuck this bullshit deck it needs to have something banned.

Really though Death's Shadow is good because it can out race Tron and it poops on the linear decks that beat Tron. DS is, I think, a very fair deck, but any mid range decks that would prey on it (like my sweet Skred) get absolutely shit on by Tron. Doesn't matter if you can win 60%+ of DS matches if you lose 80% of Tron.

I'm not an advocate of the deck, but what I've seen is that it tries to do a lot of things and kind of does them all, controls by discard, locking with bridge or needle or by being reactive with fatal push and such, then sure it does go into combo with sword. But it feels like it's too honest with all of it's aspects and never really excells in any of them. Whir of invention is kinda a card I'm talking about, but then again that as well is little too honest to make anything the deck does really good enough.

I'm going to be a little biased in opposition to the name ban.

Apparently, "thug" is used as a dogwhistle word by Fox News and other racist people as a pejorative term to describe African American youths or urbanites. WotC wants to avoid controversy, especially controversy involving racism, so they ask the guy to change the name, who complies without complaint.
Many people were upset, claiming that thug is neither an inherently racist word, nor is it exclusively used to describe black people and other possible non-whites. On top of that, the name "Thugs n Bugs" bears resemblance to "Bugs and Thugs", a Looney Tunes short featuring Mugsy, and may be a nod to the cartoon. The only possible unintentional implication of "Thugs n Bugs" is that one of the non-insect humanoid Infect creatures is a Black Zombie Knight.

If you want my point of view, I am against the name being taboo, hypothesizing that if thug is considered a racist word it will be used as a racist word. On the other hand, if thug isn't recognized as being used disproportionately against black gang members, or even mere jerks who are black, I do worry that thug will instead become "nigger"-lite.
>>
>>53938443
Fun story: my first day of work at a new school in the inner city and out of nowhere a giant black lady goes on a rant during a meeting about how we should avoid using thug because it's a pejorative term. My white ass growing up around nothing but corn can't comprehend this. We call white trash "corn thugs" so it was definitely strange to me.

If I knew what that card said would your shitposting make sense?
>>
>>53938703
>When Hostage Taker enters the battlefield, exile target artifact or creature until Hostage Taker leaves the battlefield. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast that spell.

He exiles and brings himself back forever. Without an answer, the game is forced into a draw.
>>
>>53938748
yeah but if I have no way to answer a creature by turn 4 in modern my deck probably loses turn 4 anyway, so a draw is really to my advantage.
>>
>>53938834
By answer, I mean stopping it from touching the battlefield.
>>
>>53938748
I...

That's dumb. It works, but it's dumb.

>>
>>53938850

>>
>>53938748
>Without an answer, the game is forced into a draw.
Only if all the abilities in the loop must occur. His cast ability says may, so you wouldn't be allowed to repeat it ad infinitum. At some point you'd have to stop so the game could continue, otherwise your opponent could call the judge for slow play like they do with 4 Horsemen.
>>
>>53938095
Dredge deck in a gp pr protour or something named Bugs n Thugs after the card Golgari Thug. Was changed because wotc didn't want something that could be construed as racist showing up on their streams.
>>
>>53939304
>His cast ability says may, so you wouldn't be allowed to repeat it ad infinitum.
The cast part doesn't matter.
>exile target artifact or creature until Hostage Taker leaves the battlefield
If Hostage Taker is the only legal target, then the game ends in a draw.
>>
>>53939523
But only if you have infinite mana, right? Don't we also need an infinite mana combo, so we can keep casting and exiling him?
>>
>>53939638
you don't cast him. He comes back in when he leaves the field. Read the card.
>>
>>53939638
You're not casting him, ignore that part of the ability. His exile clause exiles himself if he's the only target, then returns himself to the battlefield once he leaves. Think Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead

Anyway, the card's definitely going to get fixed text before it sees print. The leaker likely found the rare sheet in a garbage bin because Wizards realized they printed a broken card a little bit too late.

Would this list but with some abrupt decays and IoKs be a good way to get started going to FNMs as I upgrade it?
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/100-junk/
>>
>>53939924
Yeah, most likely it wouldn't do too bad. Especially with IoK and replacing the putrefys with AD
>>
>>53939949
Think I might have an extra gb shock laying around too. I know I have a set of birds, but not sure this deck would want them
>>
>>53939977
One thing I thought about after responding, you're going to have a hard time fueling your delve cards. Instants and sorcerys are normally the best fodder as you can't guarantee your creatures are going to be hitting the graveyard. Path, push, and finks would be great additions to this tho
>>
>>53940041
I'll probably have to keep them in mind as upgrades due to budget, but I'll mess around on tcgplayer and see if I can't get some Finks in there. And I can try condemns if I can't get paths just yet
>>
>>53940091
>>53940041
Though, if delve fails me, I could put bone pickers in with my removal suite for cheap evasive beaters maybe
>>
>>53940091
>>53940169
Personal choice here, but I'd rather play 4 duress and 4 path than 4 IoK and 4 condemn. But if you already have the IoK I wouldn't exactly run out to trade them for the paths.

Bone pickers is really conditional, its worth the try but tasigur is probaby still better in that slot. Push hits pickers, not tasigur
>>
>>53939977
that's actually not half bad Anon.

as far as the exact numbers go, I would find a 5-0 Abzan list and try and replicate their curve but with cheaper alternatives.

there's been some cheaper Bob-lites they've printed (Asylum Visitor and Glintsleeve Siphoner) that could maybe work? And there's also that new Exert 2drop in white that saw play in an Esper midrangey list. Obviously would play a different role but Initiate is still strong
>>
>>53940231
Fair point. And I don't already have IoKs, so I'll try and fit paths too. If it's down to the wire would you say path or abrupt decay priority wise?
>>
>>53940244
I'll check into that as well. The only near Bob I can think of at is blood scrivener, but I'll check the others. Building as a starving student is painful
>>
>>53940260
I would argue both IoK and path are better to have than AD just because they're your 1-mana bread and butter.

Like this anon>>53940244 said you're not too far off from a pretty playable list. Card draw would help and I'm a big fan of Glintsleeve. Definitely might be something to include.
>>
>>53939681

The set is released in 3 months.

That is the final print.

What sideboard cards are good against tron my current sideboard is
3x Surgical Extraction
3x Ghost Quarter
2x Grafdiggers Cage
2x Deaths Shadow
2x Pithing Needle
2x Leyline of the Void
1x Ensnaring Bridge

Every Game I usually board in all the quarters, surgicals, and needles but still get beat hand over fist most times game two just because their top decks are so much better than mine.

>Question 2
What decks can I slowly start upgrading from 8 rack too? I was looking around and abzan midrange seems the strongest I can carry over pieces from 8 rack or Classic Jund but I dont have any experience piloting these decks so I am not sure what to expect.

U/W token Tron
12 Tron lands
4 flooded Strand
4 Hallowed Fountain
1 Plains
1 Island

4 Exploration Map
4 Prophetic Prism OR 4 Azorius signet

4 Serum visions
4 Remand
4 Repeal
4 Condescend

4 Secure the wastes
4 Snapcaster Mage
4 Martial Coup
2 Elesh Norn

Cards in consideration
Cyclonic Rift
Batterskull
Elsepeth, Sun's champion

Mine doesn't look anything like a real deck at this stage, I just wanted to test a whole bunch of cards at once. I probably have too many colorless sources too. The Grove of the Guardian is really good at grinding out games with Crucible, but that's only if the game goes really long.
I've played a very similar build to Todd Steven's deck before and I agree on goyf, he just isn't big enough most games to justify a spot.
I considered Vizier of the Menagerie before, how has that been working for you?

Tremors does fuck all outside of the combo with Hostage Taker. If the rest of your deck is just human tribal, you might be able to win games without the combo.

1. Lowers threat density
2. Bigger CMC spread than Legacy
3. Automatic mulligan if your opener has 2 of them
4. You're not running Wasteland and Port, just cast your fucking creatures like a normal person
5. There's no Counterspells that you need to push your creatures through in Modern

Instead of trying to play like some tricksy-dicksy deck full of cute plays and gotcha moments, I just made the deck into a disruptive aggro deck that curves out smoothly then keeps pressure on in the sky. It's very effective. That's the entire reason why there's 10 one mana dudes in there; I literally took Ponza's approach to having one mana dudes in your opener and applied it here.

611.2b Some continuous effects generated by the resolution of a spell or ability have durations worded “for as long as . . . .” If the “for as long as” duration never starts, or it ends before the moment the effect would first be applied, the effect does nothing. It doesn’t start and immediately stop again, and it doesn’t last forever.

I play naya and I think they're both even. With boros you get to run MB helix and save life from not running so many fetches and shocks. With naya you get atarkas command which turns spears and guides into 3/3s, and destructive revelry. I guess it depends on your meta.
>>
>>53952223
I've heard the best version is Boros with a small green splash just to run Destructive Revelry in the side. No Nacatls or A Commands.
>>
>>53952535
Im starting to think two Atarkas Command mainboard isnt a bad choice. Sometimes you just absolutely need a Skullcrack effect. Would have to run a 2nd Stomping Ground though.
>>
>>53952535
>>53952589
Also against the bullshit that is Collective Brutality you can pump an Eidolon/Guide and say they cant gain life
>>
>>53952607
Instead of preventing 2 life gain, why not burn them for 3?
>>
>>53952343
what are you usually using to crew Looter Scooter? How have you faired against Tron, Grixis DS and Burn?
>>
>>53952762
>what are you usually using to crew Looter Scooter?
Whatever I either just played or is smaller than it. The loot trigger is so fucking good at smoothing out your plays. It's turned 3 Paths against Scapeshift into gas that won me the game. Moorland Haunt can also do the job.

>How have you faired against Tron
Haven't as of yet. I imagine traditional Tron will basically boil down to Ghost Quarters and Thalia holding my opponent back JUST long enough to curve out.
>Grixis DS
2-2 so far.
>Burn?
7-5. It's much easier to test against fast decks because you get more games in.

Dimir/Esper with Bant coming in a very close second.

I think this list is hilarious. Dunno if it's good but I'm down for any Blue DnT list so I'll try it out

hey kid,
nice fetchland...
>>
>>53949678

Azorius for double
Abzan for triple

Can't decide which I like more, but abzan has always been more dependable.

>3 cmc stifle

loving every laugh
>>
>>53954155

So is this awful or not? It seems alright. Better than Stifle, really.
>>
>>53954182
Not really. By the time you'd cast this they have their mana base fixed already.
>>
>>53954122

Sees moderate play in both legamemes and memedern. Same fucking reason fatal push is $10 even though it's an uncommon from literally the second most recently released set
>>
>>53955923
well i guess 1 black to get rid of a goyf is just that good
>>
>>53955957
>well i guess 1 black to completely invalidate all creatures under 5 cmc that don't have shroud/hexproof is just that good
>>
>>53957076
I feel so validated for running Blood Baron for style points
>>
>>53957076
Are people actually butthurt about fatal push? Id say good removal is good for a format. Bolt didnt invalidate creatures.
>>
>>53920947
list pls
>>
>>53957436
Revolt should have triggered off nonland permanents.

Good removal increases the demand for good threats. There's already plenty of good threats in BGx. Opening up new lines of play is what new cards should seek to do. Push being a reliable goyf/DS killed, but unreliably hitting 3-drops, would have opened some new creature choices.

Or atleast wouldn't have made Push the end-all-be-all black removal that it currently is.
>>
Abzan scrub from the other day. Found some of my surviving cards from high school and among them are Overgrown Tomb, Godless Shrine, Bloom Tender and Bloodghast. Should I be putting Bloodghast in my Abzan? Should I sell off Bloom for more ghast?
>>
>>53954224
1. you don't cast it. this ability can't be counterspelled.
2. it isn't for punishing greedy mana, it's for stopping big-game abilities like planeswalker ults, annihilator triggers, craterhoof behemoth, etc.
3. it says 'draw a card'
4. it's a fuckin' 3/1 flier with flash for 3 in it's worst mode.

How to break this guy? G/W "lands" company?

Assault loam memes?
>>
>>53959416
my first thought when I saw this was to put it into the Todd Stevens GW company deck
>>
>>53958562
not only that, but it's always castable. Holding up Squelch mana has a cost, and having the option to endstep a 3/1 flying for 3, or even just cycle it, is amazing. Ambush Viper mode is nice.

The 3drop slot is crowded, but in U/W taxes lists it could have a slot. Maybe in a Coco hatebears with Queller too
>>
>>53959752
i'm definitely going to test it in the u/w shell as a 1-of, but it might just end up being another stratus dancer kind of 'the situation in which this card is worth a slot in the 75 will almost never happen, but when it does it's a blowout'

I'm a relatively new player, and I was told to put Ghost Quarter in my Mono Black deck. Why? How is it good? Just for destroying dual lands? Why is it only used in Mono colored decks?
>>
>>53950603
>he thinks only blue fags mind game
>he doesn't understand resolving threats in front of other threats to bait force of wills to get the real threat out
You are talking about a format you know nothing of m8
>>
>>53960103
It's pretty much the only way to disrupt Tron lands, that's why I run it.
>>
>>53960103
in a mono color deck there's no reason not to run 4 ghost quarter

being able to blow up lands in a format with no wasteland is really appreciable

death's shadow and tron both really on their low/specific land count
>>
>>53958561
Depends on how you build your abzan.
I think abzAn decks tend to be midrange though
>>
>>53946078
Treasure cruise in khans was a common.
>>
>>53960103
It's removal for manlands, it also disrupts Tron and Valakut. It's definitely worth the slots in any deck that has space for it.
>>
>>53958272
I've played my fair share of Push, and sometimes a fetchland isn't always there. It isn't as reliable as it seems, at least in my decks. Sometimes I have to sacrifice a creature or a token to kill something that needs to die
>>
So have we talked about how FUCKING RIDICULOUS this card is yet?
>>
>>53960649
The card is decent but I doubt it'll see play in a top tier Modern deck anytime soon.
In draft, however...
>>
>>53959429
it's decent only paired with leonin arbiter...
>>
>>53961213
The idea is to Ghost Quarter their shit, yes, but it's more about hitting draining all basics, the Wastelanding their shit, rather than burst Wastelands. Arbiter shell could be sweet, but it nonbos with KotR, which is your bread and butter in the deck, and also forces you to run non-fetches (personally I'm sold on 2 Rallier so I like running fetches, which combo with all your other stuff too)

I think this new card is a 2-4 slot for sure, it's almost a pure upgrade to your regular ol crucible too so 1 is at the very least what you want.
I think 2 Azusa and split of Courser and Crucibro could be sweet. Courser and Crucible don't stack very well and this new card almost seems better than Courser, so maybe the split is wrong.
>>
>>53960103
>blow up their Valakut/Tron land
>Surgical it

Unless you run no threats in your pile it's basically a (almost) free win
>>
>>53959429
Same. Just replace the Crucible in his list and you're golden.
>>
When are Wizards going to ban Chalice on 1?
>>
>>53961357
it could honestly be no good in any competetive
(there is more creature hate in modern than artifact hate right now), and i'm still happy it's getting printed. Crucible is too goddamn expensive for what it actually does. They need to print more crucible-like effects, possibly with other effects as well

>>53963268
i'm honestly suprised every update where they don't. Banning it would result in less feel-bads which seem to be their basis for the modern ban list
>>
>>53963399
>>53963268
getting beat by chalice is just an indication that you need to stop abusing broken 1 drops
