Something stupid that's been bothering me: in 5th edition, the Bretonnian army book had a ton of special characters. But in 6th they got barely a fraction of those, with only a few new units to make up for it.

If the focus of Bretonnia was on having a ton of special characters, why not bring them into 6th and keep doing that? Or why not try to incorporate some of those characters into new units - imagine a unit that had the abilities of Tristan le Troubadour.

All armybooks were like that. They were slimmer than the ones in the 4th and the 5th editions, so GW couldn't spare pages on special characters, especially since Warhammer players historically have been averse to their use. Old special characters for other armies had rules online though, I don't know why not Bretonnia. https://web.archive.org/web/20060621034708/http://uk.games-workshop.com:80/chronicles/special-characters/1/

Kinda wish I'd gotten one of those FW fire dragons back in the day
I had no idea that Smaug was the same size, though

Anyhow, you guys have this thing happen to you, where you constantly try taking a different unit along with your army to hopefully see them perform, only to win or lose without them ever getting to perform?
This is the case with me and Wardancers, 3-4 games in a row now I've taken them, and each time I've arrow'd my enemy off the board before they even see combat or they eat cannonballs and junk until they all bite the dust

This is some real interesting stuff - especially how Gotrek and Felix could join a Bretonnian army without penalty. I'm still somewhat surprised that they became so iconic and such long-lived characters, especially when their sister universe 40k doesn't really have anything like that.

Only guess I can make for the lack of Bretonnian characters is possibly that GW was trying to reinvent their lore and drop a few of the most chivalrous characters. Or GW didn't care, who knows?

If anyone is interested I went with an edited take on this set up (exchanged Chaos Familiar for Banner of Swiftness on my Warriors witch also allowed my BSB to requip himself with Luckstone, Sword of Anti-Heroes, Dragonhelm and a shield).
My opponent fielded Greenskins. Even with a disastrous miscast early in the game wherein I lost 3/4 of the spells on my DP I managed to beat him quite handily, allthough truth be told his army wasn't particularly try hard in iis setup.
With that in mind I would love to hear what fun-rather-than-competitive WoC-army lists you guys have tried and/or recommend me to test out.
>>
>>53911631
Yeah that's pretty much me in every game, except for the game I played today. In that one I got the complete opposite result. The units I usually field saw very little action while the new ones I wanted to test out saw quite a bit.

BSB can take magic items as long as they don't also take a magical banner.

The DP did really good. He started off by spirit leeching an orc shaman to death. He and the Chimera then wrecked a large unit of Big 'Unz Savage Orcs. After that he easily tanked an Arachnaroch (killing the Goblin Shaman Lord that rode it) and a large unit of Black Orcs with an orc Lord untill my Trolls and Warriors blocks arrived to finish the job.

These are getting pretty tired. Did you know the word "wyvern" is derived from the word for viper? Because wyvern's primary heraldic identifier is its venomous, barbed tail. Arguing about wings with no regard for the barb makes you an idiot.
>>
>>53919615
>Most classical dragon depictions is of wyverns
No, they didn't have barbed tails. Just the same chicken walk shape.
>>

Barbed tails do not make wyverns.

In the naysayer's defence (not that most of them even knew), but most of the dragon models in Skyrim have what look like barbed stingers.

In Bethesda's defence, this design for dragons has been in the game since practically the beginning, all the way down to the barbed-looking tails. I don't know what game introduced the Imperial Seal, but it was plastered on Morrowind's cover, so it's been around for awhile.

Not quite sure who to reply to here, but...
Trying to decide where to take a WHFRP caster. I've ruled out playing hedge and lore wizards, so I'm trying to pick whether I want to play a priest or one of the witch lores. Most interesting priests to me are ulric and Myrmidia, though I worry about having a huge lack of versatility. Anyone got something to add -- are there any lores that are just flat out better than others that I haven't noticed?

Are there any notable worshipers of Manaan in the setting? Aside from Alberic.
>>
>>53940269
Marienburg is the center of the cult of Manaan, and thus its highest priests and matriarch are from there, and it's prominent in Nordland as well - it's more than likely its Elector Count has to give the cult a fair bit of respect, even if he's a Sigmarite (which is not made known). Aside from a prominent priestess in Erengrad, I don't know any notable worshipers of Manaan.

What do you do with summoned demons in Geheimnisnacht mod? I thought they could be commanders, but I guess not. Are they supposed to be counsellors? The demons I'm getting are rarely, if ever superior to the counsellors I already have, even when they are specialized for the position. Then again, the bulk of my demons so far were summoned through peasant leaders. Playing as Witch King, btw.

What does chaos (specifically Khorne and the followers of Khorne) think when some random, mortal Imperial Knight kills one of their chosen champions? Are they annoyed? Do they respect the knight? Do they brush it off and assume that champion wasn't as worthy as he claimed to be since he got killed by a mortal?

Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows, just that it flows.

There's literally a story in the 8th ed Daemons book about two Bloodletters challenging one another to battle and taking their respective legions into the Material Realm. They happen to land in Bretonnia. and so their battle is interrupted not long after they get there by a Bretonnian warhost. The daemons buttfuck the Brets and the horse of the leader guy gets spooked and runs off, much to his dismay.

The daemons resume their battle, and eventually all but the Bloodletters are left, having killed themselves off. As they clash, however, the Bretonnian guy returns, having managed to regain control of his horse, and kills -both- the Greater Daemons in what can only be described as "DAEMONS GET OFF MY LAND REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE".

Khorne, who had taken notice of the battle between his Bloodletters, finds this fucking hilarious/amazing and is suitably impressed, and immediately turns the Bretonnian man into a Daemon Prince.

They would respect the knight and admire his combat prowess. Thus they would also strive towards killing him since bringing him down would make them more noticeable to their Divine Patron. Khornates respect and follows martial capabilities so I wouldn't be surprised if they started following the knight's orders (atleast untill they got a chance to honorably kill him themselves) if the Knight had the insight into the mind of a Khornate loony to actually try giving orders to them.

Fuck off, that's oldhammer lore.

Sven Hasslefreesian, the Dwarf who invented internal combustion engines and blew up a large part of Karaz-A-Karak, settled a colony there because he was banished and becoming a Slayer means admitting he was wrong.

Also, if you have Warhammer you already have AoS. Not even AoSfags like Sigmarines.
>>
>>53946690
Lizardmen suddenly decided to reinterpret the golden plates and finish shaping the homeland of the Dwarfs halfway through history via earthquakes.

This destroyed their underground highway and many Holds, allowing greenskins and Skaven to swarm in without supply routes and reinforcements which caused Dwarfs to lose most of their empire and the greenskin/Skaven population to explode enough for the races to become relevant in the setting. This came right at the end of the War Of Vengeance/the Beard so Dwarfs were so diminished they labeled it the Time Of Woe and stopped taking any form of recorded history including Grudges. It ended Dwarf supremacy in the Old World and resulted in massive gains for the evil factions leading directly to End Times.

Lizardmen gave no fucks because they think it was maybe sorta part of the Old Ones plan and Dwarfs don't know they caused it.

>>
>>53949003
GW, more specifically the head of the company at the time Bryan Ansell, wanted a fifth Chaos God all along. He was supposed to be in Realm Of Chaos which introduced what we know of as Warhammer Chaos.

The guys who wrote Judge Dredd were friendly with Ansell thanks to Citadel making Dredd minis, so he asked them to write Malal. Since Realm Of Chaos turned out to be a huge undertaking they cut Malal from it so the writers anf artists could focus on getting it out by splitting it into two books, then getting them to clear out the backlog on WFRP and proto-Necromunda, then come back and add Malal.

The problem is a lot of the team had become part-timers either because GW was cheap or because the various GW sub companies like Citadel and Flame Productions were treated like different companies so doing fulltime at both was legally two halftime jobs.

Halftimers own what they create after a certain amount of time under UK law. GW did not know this.

On the eve of Malal models being released the Dredd guys decided to stop working together and got to deciding who owned Malal, which is how GW found out that almost their entire range and a LOT of their IP belonged to the employees, not them.

They panicked and fired everyone, then restructured in a very corporate way which not only paved the way for Kirby to take over but also alienated the greatest of the old creators like the Perrys. They also had to change the look of everything just enough to continue selling it legally, just like how companies like Chapterhouse fuck them over today.

The only good thing Gav did for Fantasy was his work on the Dwarfs book Grudgelore. The rest was mediocre to absolute garbage.

End Times non-novels is indeed mostly Thorpe writing, and he steered the whole ship. Even if the result was always going to be a wreck we hate Thorpe for how badly he steered us into it the whole way.

To be fair the bulk of BL books are pretty bad.

I can probably count the really good books I read from the over the years on one hand.

I agree that some of Gav's writing was pretty awful beyond what is usual though.

Admittadly beyond the Sundering series and the Chaos Marines book there isn't a lot I can attest to. I'm not going to argue with you since I haven't read all his work, and I get the sense you haven't either, but I find him inoffensive at worst and "eh, he's alright" at best. No one to go crazy over, no one to get your panties in a knot about.

Although, if he wrote a whole fucking book about how Alith Anar looses his mother, father, family friends, servants, fiance, grandmother, grandfather, the majority of his family's land, subjects and holdings (not to mention those lands being blown the fuck up at the end) to Malekith and his mother, as well as indirrectly causing him to loose a second fiance, a fuckbuddy and more close friends, all of which drives him into being the creator of the "Fuck Dark Elves" faction and a semi-mythical being that shows up only to murder dark elves and fuck over Malekith and his mother, only for him to then have Alith slap Malekith on the wrist and say "Don't do it again" during the end times, I will not only completely change my opinion but eat my own fucking foot

We would have missed the golden age.

Previously GW lacked a clear organized leadership.

The firing wasn't immediate, and having the execs in the face of the creative teams really did unite the vision which culminated in 6e.

The event was like getting on a rollercoaster for quality. Slow climb for about fifteen years, then WEEEEEE its over.

They were just a bunch of guys who wanted to make nerd shit man
>>
>>53951559
Seems like karmic payback for trying to screw their employees.
>>
>>53951559
GW grew ridiculously fast and large in a very small industry, basically expanding to fill the room then making the room bigger to fit in while crushing the competition both intentionally and unintentionally.

Until Kirby, it was run by guys who loved miniatures and knew what they wanted, but had mediocre business sense. They took risks nobody else did previously and made it work, but also failed to grasp basic business concepts in other areas.

Look at how it started. Three nerds in an apartment tricked four nerds in an apartment into thinking they were a big company to get all distribution rights to a shitload of tabletop games. Two of those guys lived in the first GW office and snuck into a health club to shower.

They put the kid in the mail room in charge of making games since it seemed like he had good ideas, and he spit out both Warhammers.

They poached some of the best guys in the nerd culture of the UK just by letting them do whatever they want, and made it go international.

Those two guys also could not into organization, so they went "fuck it" and put the eccentric guy they had working on Warhammer in charge of the company even though they were in the middle of firing him, then went "fuck it" again and sold it all to him. This dude took every risk and made it all work, but could not into copyright or IP protection and when shit got too complicated for him he drug more and more investors in, then pawned it all off on one of them. That guy fucking sucked and used the company like his piggy bank until today when he pawned off leadership to an investor who seemed mildly interested in the story rather than just finances like the rest of them.

GW is one long story of idiot savants in terms or business, with one just plain idiot in between.

>>
>>53951826

It was hardly them taking advantage of their employees, they were writing all this stuff on GW's time and money.
>>
>>53953615
Funny thing is that most of them had company loyalty.
Even though Ackland owned most of Chaos other than the names of things and the Chaos Gods themselves, he offered to sell it all to them in exchange for stock so he could stay. He was there from the very beginning of Warhammer making its own stuff, he was the neckiest beard in the staff and to this day is proud of what he created there and where the company was.

But instead they redesigned everything and basically shoved him in a closet until he quit, then put out a public statement telling him and the other original artists to go collect all their original artwork once GW's right to use it ran out or they'd be picking it all out of the dumpster.

GW was fucked by circumstance and a fight between two famous creators they had taken a dumb risk on commissioning, which hardened them so they fucked everyone else from that point onwards.

The biggest irony is Chapterhouse. Games Workshop Daemons are just them basically stealing someone else's concepts and changing it just a little bit so they can't be sued, and are now the center of an entire industry leeching off their sales in the exact same way. To say nothing of Warcraft and Starcraft.
THAT is karma.

This is actually something I've contemplated for my daemons, and the good news is, round bases fit into square ones more or less perfectly. With a little bit of effort, you can put your shit on round bases (who knows, maybe you'll run your dwarfs as squat or some shit, or maybe there will be a qt AoS player that you decide to play with) while making WHFB-legal movement trays. And let's be honest, no one uses anything but movement trays anyhow. Only thing you might have trouble with is chariot-type bases, but maybe not. Don't have any for reference.

Pic related I just took to show what I mean.

>>53962808
Are there 20mm round bases though? afaik, no. But yeah I've seen a bunch of daemon players use movement trays on their round based daemons

Of course you'll never field them against dwarfs or the like, but, expecially with the Lord one, if you're against armies with a single cannon, you can easily develop him outside range of said cannon

has anyone tried to scratch build these style of treeman? I have some plans but am very interested to see what people do
>>
>>53963028
Well the cannon isn't going to run out of range but cover would be nice if I got lucky with terrain once
You can field multiple treemen but that really eats up your points, I prefer having just one for flanking so that I can fit more shooting in.
If I did a melee list I'd probably take multiple, though. The lord one I kinda wanna give a go for a fluffy list but if I run into cannons (which I will) he's firewood

The only cannons you have to worry about are drawen and demon one due to flaming. He's still 6W, and he's a mage of life, so he can shrug off a cannonball or two in a whole game.

Fun fact: due to the lord treemen having an itsy bitsy base (it's a sideway chariot base) he is fucking hard to hit with cannonballs

I can't think of any cannon that couldn't hit (and with added luck, kill because lol d6 S10 wounds) a treeman turn 1, since they're like 48"-60 or 72" range. Just go "10 from the back of the base" and you'll hit anything with any luck, especially Ogres
I always did think it is weird how the Treeman Ancient is sideways on the base, and its odd that the only source we have for how its supposed to be facing is the box

''10 from the back base means that it can miss pretty often if it is a sideway chariot. It's like trying to hit a lone monstorus infantry model, it's statistically harder to hit.

It doesn't need to land -on- the base, Anon
it just needs to bounce over it after the first one, you know that right?

Well I just picked up Vermintide since it's the summer sale. Time to smack the shit out of skaven and shout "THAT'S GOIN' IN THE BOOK" I guess.

Yes. However, since the base it's so small, you have a greater chance to over or undershoot.

if you put it at 10' from the base, you won't overshoot. However, you need to roll at least an 8 with both dices to hit it. Had it been a standard monster base, you could have hit it on a 4 (therefore every single time). As you can see, it's statistically harder to hit a treeman ancient than every other monster, thus providing the treeman ancient with an hidden defense against cannonballs, or other war machines relying on clean hits (for example, good luck headshotting it with a catapult)

Shooting 10" from the back makes it practically impossible to miss anything you're shooting at, no matter the base size, I'm just telling you
Unless you misfire or roll two 2s

This is just another way modern Warhammer sucks. All monsters should be on 50x50mm bases except Stegadon.
